Moving Beyond Our Limit

Contrary to commonly held beliefs, strength and resources play minor roles in a company’s success. Instead, the ability to conceive of innovative possibilities that others will choose not to emulate is the key to gaining a competitive edge. Unfortunately, our leaders, colleagues, and employees are overlooking many attractive opportunities. We overlook these because our language - the concepts and metaphors we apply - impose hidden barriers that prevent us from seeing the totality of what is possible.

Kaihan Krippendorff, author of four business strategy books, consultant with Wharton Executive Education, and CEO of Outthinker, will show us that we necessarily limit ourselves by following rules that don’t exist. These rules are so deeply ingrained in us, rooted in centuries of cultural development, that we have stopped questioning their truth. Indeed, like

just as a fish cannot conceive of water, we often are not even aware of these rules we are following because we are surrounded by them.

But there is a way out. By contrasting core Western concepts to Eastern ones, we can begin distinguishing the differences. Kaihan will show that there are four key differences we should become aware of and will offer practical tools to help you apply these differences to business:

• Ying Yang/ Polarity• Wu Wei/ Go with the Flow• Wu Change/ Continuous Change• Shang Bing Wu Bing/ Indirect Action

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to:• Recognize that they are often trapped in a perspective and mind-set without knowing it• Apply four concepts (or strategic narratives) to help them step out of pre-existing perspectives• Apply these concepts to a problem• Identify a new idea that they believe could have great potential

Zen and the Art of Explanation

Professionals explain ideas every day, but we rarely take a step back and consider our own explanatory style or how we can become more understandable. Lee LeFever will challenge you to think differently about explanation and learn to see it as a skill that can be learned and improved. He will discuss what makes explanations work (or not), how to solve explanation problems and put better explanations to work in your professional life.

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to:• Recognize the unique role explanations play in communication• Identify the major factors that influence their own explanatory style • Recognize the symptoms of a failed explanations• Refine their approach by "repackaging" ideas into better explanations using strategies

that involve context, storytelling, and connections

Lee LeFever is the founder of Common Craft and author of The Art of Explanation - Making Your Ideas, Products and Services Easier to Understand. Lee is known around the world for Common Craft’s work in explaining complex ideas using short animated videos. Lee’s videos have been viewed over 50 million times online and he has worked with the most respected brands in the world, including LEGO, Ford, Microsoft, Google and Intel. Lee and Common Craft are also credited with inspiring a new genre of online video: the “explainer” video.

His career in explanation began in 2003 when he saw a unique opportunity to explain emerging technology. What started as a fun idea quickly grew into viral video success. He and his wife Sachi became known to many thanks to the unique style and intent of Common Craft videos, which feature stop-motion animation of paper cut-outs on a whiteboard. Years of producing explainer videos taught Lee valuable lessons in how to make ideas easy to understand. He wrote The Art of Explanation (Wiley, 2012) to share this knowledge and help professionals of all types become better explainers. The Art of Explanation has been translated into 8 languages.

Today, Lee’s goal is to help people see that explanation is a skill that can be developed and put to work in the real world. His speaks internationally on the topic of explanation and inspires audiences to think differently about how they explain ideas.

How Chinese “Strategic Narra-tives” Can Unlock Innovative Thinking (10:45 – 11:45 am)

Kaihan Krippendorff

For the past ten years Kaihan Krippendorff has been applying a set of ancient Chinese strategic narratives to help leaders and their teams con-ceive of innovative business ideas. What started off as an experiment has grown into a well struc-tured, tested methodology called “The Outthink-er Process.”

In this session, Kaihan will walk through the pro-cess and show you how you can apply a set of 36 Chinese narratives, as part of a formal or informal strategy discussion, to coach an individual or team toward discovering their own breakthrough busi-ness idea. Yvette Montero Salvatico Are you ready for the wicked

talent landscape of the 21st century? We live in an age where accelerating complexity and ex-ponential change is the norm; an unpredictable world that requires a completely different ap-proach to business, economics, technology, and social development. The growing fluidity of the global economy, the dramatic disruptions of the digital revolution, and the radical empowerment of individuals through mobile computing and micro-manufacturing have combined to create a wicked future landscape. In the 21st century, we have to reframe complexity as the natural order of growth, an empowering tool to be embraced for greater opportunity. Our wicked landscape will only intensify moving forward. Keep Your Design Methods Visu-al, Collaborative, and Effective (2:30 – 3:30 pm)

Mike Beaulieu

When it comes to designing new solutions and working with members of your creative team, do you find it challenging to navigate between the visual concepts and the verbal/spoken ideas?

The brain is far superior at image processing than it is at word processing. In this highly interac-tive session, you will explore how to use design sketching, visual models, and building on the ideas of other people to guide your teams to sen-sible and engaging design solutions.

Any team member who creates and designs inter-active courses, information graphics, corporate universities, social learning, gamified interactions, videos, PowerPoint presentations, client com-munications designed to sell an idea, or strategy workshops will find this session useful and re-warding.

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to:

• See examples and receive tips for how to keep the design conversation visual

• Understand why idea sharing is more valu-able than an idea owning

• Represent literal and abstract concepts with nothing but pictures

Increase Capacity with Simplicity – Trust & Your Training Partner (1:15 – 2:15 pm)

Grant Axtell & Neal Otto

In 2013, the Oregon Employ-ment Department (OED) made the bold decision to switch email software, and to NOT deliver the training on the new software in their traditional

classroom settings. OED decided to partner with Jumpstart Computer Training to design and de-liver live virtual instructor-led training sessions to their state-wide workforce.

Grant Axtell and Neal Otto will describe the journey both organizations experienced as they developed procedures and templates that al-lowed them to work more efficiently and provide a higher quality training experience to partici-pants. Grant and Neal will share their insights, templates, and tools used by their respective organizations to build trust, improve and simplify processes, and create goodwill between training partners.

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to:• Define three ways to improve training part-

nerships within an organization. • Participate in a case study and discuss chal-

lenges and opportunities in building training partnerships.

• Identify two barriers to seamless training delivery provided by a vendor and multiple ways to overcome them.

Enhancing Mindfulness through Improvisation (2:30 – 3:30 pm)

Kristin Hibler & Line MØrkbak Today’s leaders are faced with increasingly complex environments. Mindfulness has proven to be essential for leading successfully in such complexity--the ability to remain calm and focused in the

moment better enables leaders to pivot from task to task, quickly frame-shift, and nurture innovation. The skills required for successful improvisation mimic many of those required to lead through complexity (e.g., building trust, listening, taking risks, commitment to the idea, radical collaboration). In this session, we will explore how improv concepts and activities can be used to enhance mindfulness and other factors critical for leading through complexity. After participating in a series of improv exercises, you will have a chance to reflect on using these techniques to simplify your professional challenges and energize your team collaboration.

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to:

• Describe how the philosophy and technique of improv can support developing mindfulness and leading through complexity.

• Leadership development and team collaboration.

Speaker Biographies

Meagan Johnson graduated from Arizona State University Business School with a BS in Marketing. After working several years in a sales environment Meagan became discouraged to

hear all the negative comments about Generation X. (Generation X is the 50 million people born between 1965 and 1980.) As a Gen Xer herself, she felt these comments were of course unfounded. She was further frustrated by the blinders her

14

own managers seemed to have. “There was this perception of only one way to get ahead and be successful at work. The career path my managers expected me to take was very traditional. They seemed to be unable to look at a different way of training and career management that was rele-vant to younger employees.” Meagan began to research everything from small to large corpora-tions in order to find successful ways to work with the younger generation. From that ZAP THE GAP Solving the Multi-Generational Puzzle was born.

Since 1997 Meagan Johnson has entertained and educated hundreds of audience members from all over the globe. She has written a variety of articles about the multiple generations and has been interviewed for many publications and audio programs. She wrote the Generational chapter in the book Success is A Team Effort. In 2000, she was the only female speaker on the main platform at the Harley Davidson University conference in New Orleans Louisiana. After her ZAP THE GAP presentation, a Harley Dealer told her “You have changed the way I treat and train my younger employees.”

In 2003, she received her CSP, Certified Speaking Professional designation. Currently, only ten per-cent of professional speakers hold this designa-tion. As a Gen Xer, Meagan was extremely proud to be one of the youngest recipients of the CSP designation.

Meagan and her Baby Boomer father, Larry John-son are the authors of Generations, Inc - From Boomers to Linksters, Managing the Friction Between Generations at Work.

Adriane Jones works as a Learning Consultant alongside the innovative team at Idea Learning Group. Outside of work, Adriane has been actively involved with the Cascadia

Chapter for a majority of her professional career. Currently, Adriane serves as the Director of Member Services for the Chapter. By getting involved with the Chapter, Adriane has found her career has grown by leaps and bounds. She has learned new skills to apply to her job and created a network of meaningful relationships with Chapter members. Adriane enjoys serving for the Chapter because it gives her the opportunity to give back to an organization she feels has played such a major role in the development of her career.

Tyson Wooters believes in the strength of humble leaders, the awesome power of servanthood, and your organization's ability to harness those forces. He also

believes in his life's mission: to educate people through humor and shared experience about the phenomenal power of taking real accountability and ownership in every aspect of life.

Tyson learned to lead while wearing white pants and standing on a ladder in front of his bands. But he admits that those elements aren't necessarily required in the cultivation of every good leader. His formative leadership experience was as drum major of his high school marching band, a position that launched him not only into the glamorous, high-stakes world of college marching band, but taught him the value of putting service to an organization above personal glory. Along with earning his teaching degree in music education from the University of Oregon (as well as unofficial minors in "trampoline performance" and "mascot studies"), Tyson has spent the last decade working with groups in the US and around the world. He considers himself a teacher first and foremost, though his definition of what it really means to "teach" often doesn't require a blackboard or a textbook.

Tyson began speaking and presenting in 1998, and has apprenticed with the nationally-recognized Challenge Day organization, Mike Robbins, The Ovation Company, and other highly sought-after motivational speakers. He has worked with professional, scholastic, and civic groups ranging
