EVENTS HERE AT BLESSED SACRAMENT

We pray the Rosary each Tuesday at 9am in the Church

“There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot solve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary”, Sister Lucia of Fatima. Please join us this week!

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Welcome Everyone, both parishioners and visitors with whom we love sharing the beauty of the Adirondacks and the

fellowship of our Church! Welcome to our annual celebration of the missionary herit-age of this region, as we recreate the days when the missionary used his canoe as an altar to celebrate Mass. We recognize in particular Jesuit priest Isaac Jogues, Jesuit brother Rene Goupil, lay missionary John LaLande, and Mohawk Kateri Tekakwitha. These four saints are portrayed in the stained glass on the doors of our Church and by the statues in the Meditation Garden. In addition, our side altars are dedicated to Saint Isaac Jogues and Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.

In the Old Testament reading, as Moses prepares to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, he tells them that the true purpose of God’s commandments is for the people to live in harmony with Him and with each other.

† We do not pick and choose which commands are easy for us to follow. Out of love, we are to observe the whole law that God has given us.

The New Testament reading reminds us that we are to be doers of the word, not just hearers.

† True worship is not a matter of simply going to Mass or saying prayers. It is a matter of acting on the word that has been planted in us by God.

† What do you do to live God’s word? Do you share your time, talent, and treasure for the good of others?

LENDING LIBRARY OF SPIRITUAL BOOKS

We have begun a small “lending library” in the vestibule of the Church. Many of the books are from Dynamic Catholic

company and are “down to earth” and easy reading, applicable to everyday living. Just take a book and return it after you have read it. Visitors who won’t be coming back

soon can take a book home. There is a donation box to leave a free will offering if you would like.

In the Gospel, Jesus accuses the religious leaders of being hypocrites. They criticized Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands before eating, but they showed no interest in the goodness of the disciples’ hearts.

† Jesus wants us to understand that our outward behav-ior should reflect what is in our hearts. A good heart will not produce evil actions. Nor will washing our hands make us clean inside where it really counts.

† What tempts you away from being the person that God created you to be?

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns “what comes from within can defile” a person. Families need to worry about “outside influences” but also about “inside influences.” The values our children carry for a lifetime are learned at home. “Habits of the hearth” are the most powerful influences on a child. That’s the good news! That can also be the bad news! Bud Ozar

OUR HERITAGE: On the eve of the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1646 (the year he would die a martyr), Father Isaac Jogues christened our nearby lake Lac du Sainte-

Sacrement (Lake of the Blessed Sacrament) in honor of the Holy Eucharist. In 1755, General William Johnson renamed the lake in honor of the King of England. Throughout, the Native Americans called the lake Andia-ta-rochte.

How Labor Day Began...The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City and planned by the Central Labor Union. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and the Central La-bor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and hold a "workingmen's holiday." The idea spread, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. In 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a federal holiday. Labor Day was to be observed with a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families.

Let us pray… Lord of work and play, we pray to you today. You worked for six days, creating all that we see and sense around us. On the seventh day you rested and saw that everything you had made was good. Today on our national day of rest from labor, we thank you for the gift of leisure, and remember all who have gone before us, working hard, long hours without break and good pay so that we can appreciate the gifts of family and friends and enjoy safety and prosperity in the work of our hands. Amen.

Volunteers are needed to dismantle our missionary display and store everything away for next year. Please join us next Sunday, September 2nd, after the 10:30am Mass to help out. Thank you!

will be held on Sunday, October 7 at 2pm at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, NY

This weekend concludes our annual display of the missionary heritage of this region honoring the four saints portrayed in the stained glass of our church. Bishop Emeritus Howard Hubbard wrote this of KATERI TEKAKWITHA: “This 17th century woman is an inspiration for us in the 21st century, as she defied the culture and conventions of her day in spite of enormous pressure to conform. Nowadays we are told in so many ways, both subtly and not so subtly, ‘You’ve got to go along to get along; you’ve got to compromise and give in a bit if you are to gain acceptance, popularity and credibility.’ We are bombarded constantly with pressures to conform, encouraged incessantly to substitute money for concern, style for substance, things for self, and sex for love. Kateri Tekakwitha is our model to live Christian values and ideals without regard to what’s popular or expected or admired by others.”
