Tioga Turns The Tide:

Our Community Celebrates

A Year of Progress

One year ago, in September 2011,

our community suffered the worst flood-

ing in recent history. The Village of

Owego and some community members

are working together to recognize the

event’s impact on our community and

celebrate the progress the community

has made in the last year.

Jana Inglasbe, Long Term Recovery

Committee Member said “Rebuilding is

a long process and we aren’t done yet.

We believe it’s important to gather as a

community and celebrate the fact that

we are here, we will rebuild and we will

continue to move forward together.”

To celebrate the progress made to-

wards recovery the community has two

events planned. Starting at 5:00 pm on

Friday, September 7, The Village of

Owego is hosting a block party in down-

town Owego complete with amazing

specials from downtown merchants, live

music and fireworks. The event contin-

ues Saturday, September 8, from 11:00

am to 4:00 pm as Tioga Opportunities,

Inc. hosts a community picnic at the

Countryside Community Center on

Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego. The

community picnic will feature a free

BBQ, bingo, games, bounce house, and

lots of goodies for the kids including a

display of fire trucks, free bike helmets

and car seats.

The fireworks will be launched from

Draper Park and are the fireworks origi-

nally scheduled for the 4th of July. The

Village of Owego and the event plan-

ning committee would like to thank Vi-

sions Federal Credit Union for their gen-

erous support of the fireworks.

Details of the events can be found on

pages 6 & 12 (Events may be added)

Nichols Community Day

Held on Labor Day

When the girls of Girl Scout Troop

113 heard that the annual Nichols Old

Home Day was not going to happen this

year because of the damage caused by

last year's flood to Kirby Park, they put

their efforts together to seek a solution.

They girls have come to expect getting

together with friends and neighbors for a

last celebration before school starts. To

keep the community spirit alive and to

build upon it, Troop 113 and its leaders

and their created advisory board, put

together a plan for Nichols Community

Day within an unbelievably short time.

The Community Day included a pa-

rade, games, sales, artists and vendors

selling wares, music, and food.

The Nichols Community Day Parade started at 10am from Cady Avenue.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor,

At the August 23, 2012 OACSD

School board meeting there was a dis-

cussion concerning the new elementary

school that is going to be built. A fact

finding design committee has been es-

tablished and not surprisingly there are

not any community taxpayers on that

committee. There are only district em-

ployees. So much for the BOE and the

Superintendent wanting the community

to be involved in all things related to the

school system yet community taxpayers

are left out of this process. Does this set

a good tone of good will between the

BOE, Superintendent, and with the com-

munity? I give Mr. Crosby a lot of credit

for asking why the community was not

being asked to participate within the

design committee, and the Superinten-

dent said it was due to time constraints.

TIME CONSTRAINTS???? That is a

very poor reason why the Superinten-

dent doesn’t want to deal with the tax-

payers even though the taxpayers are

paying his salary. Where were the rest of

the BOE in asking those kinds of ques-

tions? There weren’t any. Where is the

cooperation between the BOE and tax-

payers? I don’t see it.

Sincerely,

Candy Sweppenheiser, Owego

Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman"

Summer Recreation Program Thanks Community More than 70 children enjoyed a

summer enrichment program that in-

cluded field trips and basic swim lessons

this year through the Newark Valley

Joint Summer Recreation Program,

thanks to generous grant from Mildred

Faulkner Truman Foundation.

“I am thankful to be able to offer this

opportunity to the children of our com-

munity,” said Jacia Donnelly, camp di-

rector. “Not only were we able to pro-

vide a summer of fun activities for our

youth, but continue to provide free swim

lessons and water safety instruction.”

The Newark Valley Joint Summer

Recreation Program provides free sum-

mer enrichment activities to school-age

children in the community. This year, in

addition to offering free swim lessons,

the children went on two field trips, one

to Skate Estate in Vestal, and to Cinema

Saver in Endicott.

The Mildred Faulkner Truman Foun-

dation provided a generous grant of

$1,520. This money was used to provide

safe busing transportation to and from

the camp to the field trip locations, Don-

nelly said.

There is no charge for the recreation

program, which is operated by the Vil-

lage of Newark Valley and donations

from campers’ parents.

“It’s thanks to donations from organi-

zations like the Mildred Faulkner Tru-

man Foundation that we were able to

offer this valuable program to the chil-

dren of our community,” Donnelly said.

Other generous gifts were received from

the Blessed Trinity Parish. Greenwood

Park provided free access for learn-to-

swim lessons and for free swim time for

the children.

In addition to the field trip and swim-

ming activities, the Joint Recreation

Program provides arts and crafts, games

and other recreational opportunities for

school-age children in the Newark Val-

ley, Berkshire, and Richford during four

weeks of the summer. This year’s pro-

gram concluded on August 9, 2012. The

program generally begins mid-July.

Class of 1967 will hold its 45-year class

Tioga Downs Casino

Supports Veterans Group

Chairman of American Racing and

Entertainment Jeff Gural was at Tioga

Downs on September 3 for an important

presentation. As a way of giving back to

those who have so heroically served and

protected us, a check for all ticket sales

proceeds from the Oak Ridge Boys con-

cert held August 10 at Tioga Downs was

presented to the Southern Tier Veterans

Support Group.

In addition to the proceeds raised

from ticket sales, Mr. Gural personally

donated $10.00 for each ticket making a

total of $20 for every ticket sold. That

brought the amount of the final donation

to a remarkable $78,400 for the South-

ern Tier Veterans Support Group.

“Once again, I am grateful for the oppor-

tunity to help our veterans here in the

twin tiers. The Oak Ridge Boys is one of

my favorite groups, and the donation is

being done in appreciation for all that

the veterans in the country have done to

keep us safe,” Mr. Gural stated.

Mr. Gural and Tioga Downs have

made several notable donations to veter-

an’s causes, and continue to make giving

to such causes a priority. Last year’s

Wynonna concert at Tioga Downs raised

$40,870 through ticket sales, with Mr.

Gural’s $5.00 match adding another

$20,435 to the final amount that was

then donated to the Southern Tier Veter-

ans Support Group.

Tioga Downs Casino is open year-

round with video gaming machines, sim-

ulcast horse racing, restaurants, a sports

bar and special entertainment events. It

is located along the north side of NY

Route 17/ I-86, two miles west of exit 62

Owego Native Earns

Rare Honor from American Legion

An Owego native has become only

the eleventh person in the history of the

93-year-old American Legion to be

named “Past National Commander of

The American Legion” without actually

serving a term as national commander.

Richard M. Pedro joins legendary

New Yorkers Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.,

and longtime U.S. Representative Ham-

ilton Fish in receiving the rare honor.

Delegates at the organization’s 94th

Annual National Convention unani-

mously passed Resolution 1, which offi-

cially bestowed the office upon the adju-

tant for The American Legion Depart-

ment of New York.

“I am absolutely floored,” Pedro said

after being sworn in as a past national

commander by the current National

Commander, Fang A. Wong, also of

New York. “The American Legion is a

great organization. I am honored and

proud to be a part of it.”

Pedro joined American Legion Post

401 in Tioga, New York, 67 years ago

after serving in the U.S. Navy.

While presenting Pedro a plaque

commemorating the honor, North Caro-

lina Executive Committee member Jerry

Hedrick said, “These plaques are usually

given to men who are about to do great

things, but you have already done great

things, a lifetime full of great things for

your fellow veterans, your country and

The American Legion. We know that

you will continue to serve The American

Legion and all of us will continue to be

far better because of it.”

National Commander Fang A. Wong (left); Honorary PNC Dick Pedro (center); and National Executive Committeeman Jerry L. Hedrick of North Carolina (right).

"Bull in a China Shop" in Nichols The Community Care Network of

Nichols (CCNN) and the Tioga Acting

Guild (TAG) pulled off another wonder-

ful dinner/theatre event August 3 to 5 at

the Nichols Elementary Gymnasium.

Audiences were treated to a delicious

chicken and biscuit dinner and then a

hilarious rendition of Bull in a China

Shop. In spite of the heat, the show was

a wonderful success and was enjoyed by

all who attended.

TAG has partnered with CCNN for

several dinner/theatre fundraisers, com-

ing under CCNN’s Not-for-Profit um-

brella. However, director Robin Benesh

announced that TAG was in the process

of becoming its own Not for Profit In-

corporation and would be producing

future plays on their own. While they

appreciate the partnership they have

experienced with CCNN, it is time to

make a go of it on their own. This is a

big step for TAG, one they are very ex-

cited about. TAG’s vision is to not only

entertain the community with quality

theatre, but to hold other cultural events

to both raise funds for charitable organi-

zations as well as sponsor free events for

the public. This makes TAG a very

unique organization, one in which they

hope will receive great support from the

communities and businesses in the sur-

rounding areas.

TAG is in the process of forming a

board of directors and all the necessary

paperwork to make it happen. They hope

to hold open auditions in the near future.

You can follow TAG’s announcements

and contact them by liking their Face-

book page, or contact Robin Benesh via

email ([email protected]).

Gallery Forty-One Features Literary Arts Gallery Forty-One on Lake Street in

Owego is venturing into a new

expression of art form, the literary arts,

by featuring the works of Owego writer

and author, R. W. White throughout the

month of September. During the Third

Friday Art Walk, September 21, 5:00 to

8:00 pm, the Gallery will host an author

event and book-signing with Bob White.

When asked to explain how writing

was an art form, White replied, “In as

much as a painter begins with a blank

canvas and within weeks or months will

have a completed image within a frame,

the fiction writer will begin with a blank

screen or page and within a year or

several years have a completed story

between two covers. All writing,” he

added, “particularly fiction, evolves

from the creative skills of the writer.”

Bob White’s 2012 release is The

Secret of Abetifi, a thriller set in West

Africa. His other novels are Hotbed in

Tranquility and Susquehanna Scandal.

He also has two nonfiction books to his

credit, Yours Truly, C. P. Avery, the

biography of Tioga County’s first

elected judge, and Love, Kilby, the true

story of a woman’s use of alternative

therapies in surviving breast cancer.

These books are available in either print

or e-book format at

www.booksbybobwhite.com.

Gallery Forty-One welcomes

applicants for membership. Pick up an

application at the Gallery, or contact

Jerry Arbes at 637-2739 or

[email protected]. The Gallery is open

Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00

am to 5:00 pm, with extended hours to

8:00 pm on Owego’s Third Friday Art

Walks.

St. Patrick School Fall Festival - Sept 28 and 29

After being cancelled last fall in the

wake of flooding from Tropical Storm

Lee, the St. Patrick School Fall Festival

is back!

The Fall Festival will be held from

5:00 to 10:00 pm, Friday, September 28,

and 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, Saturday,

September 29, at St. Patrick School, 309

Front Street in Owego.

The family-friendly event is a cele-

bration of St. Patrick School and the

community, with a weekend full of live

entertainment, delicious food, shopping

and activities.

Flooding of the school’s basement

last September lead to the loss of nearly

everything needed to run the two-day

event. While much will seem familiar to

Fall Festival visitors, it is actually brand-

new.

Throughout the weekend, families

will enjoy games in Leprechaun Land

for just 25-cents a try. Paddy Bucks are

awarded every time, which children can

collect and trade for prizes. Food is in

great supply all around with Dad’s Diner

serving up traditional festival fare and

Shamrock Café showcasing delectable

desserts. Get in the Halloween Spirit

with the always popular haunted house

and check out the gently-used costumes

in Halloween BOO-tique. Find a “new to

you” treasure in Buy the Book and Irish

Alley Treasures.

At 6:45 pm Friday, the Luminary

Memorial Service will take place to hon-

or the memories of loved ones. Purchase

your luminaries in advance by calling

the school at 687-1770. The cost is $5.00

each or 3 for $13.00.

Starting at 5:00 pm Friday, see home-

grown talent in “Songwriter Showcase.”

Students from the Young Music School

will perform in voice, performance, and

guitar. Many have competed and won

local talent contests, and even auditioned

for national talent shows. This year’s

performers are Ashley Lux, Lia Scott,

Brooke Albright, Eisha Conrad, Amanda

Jordan, Kellie Wright, Sara Sienko,

Heather Hommel, Jordan Woloch (with

Hover), and Victoria Young.

Also performing is "Like Father, Like

Son,” an acoustic duo with Edward

Kurtz on guitar and Jacob Kurtz on bass

playing anything from Bruce Spring-

steen to America to original songs.

Rounding out the set is Martin Neuhard,

accompanied by Michael Wu and Jesse

Wells. Neuhard has been playing guitar

and writing tunes for 20 years. He re-

cently performed at Cyber Café playing

songs off his completed debut EP pro-

duced by Randy McStine.

From 7:15 to 8:15 pm, local fan fa-

vorite and teen heaththrob “Hover” re-

turns for another rocking performance.

Taking the stage at 8:30 pm and closing

out the night is The Randy McStine Trio

with McStine, John Kanazawich & Jim

Rosati. Expect to hear lots of rock hits

and deep album tracks from the '60s

through the '90s.

Saturday’s performances are equally

entertaining. At 11:00 am contemporary

Christian group New Day plays a mix-

ture of original, contemporary, and up-

tempo songs to inspire and uplift listen-

ers.

Playing at 6:00 pm is Daphne Braden,

who has been entertaining in the South-

ern Tier since 1997, performing a wide

variety of musical styles including pop

and rock, jazz, blues, country, and clas-

sic hits. She often creates a fun "variety

show" atmosphere, with sing-alongs and

props for audience participation.

Following Daphne Braden’s perfor-

mance is The String Band, a high energy

four-piece Bluegrass Band celebrating

15 years this season. They will perform

original and traditional tunes twisting

some into cutting edge, modern blue-

grass.

Rounding out the evening, and ending

the weekend on a high note, is Kenyon

Hill. Made up of five members, includ-

ing a father and daughter duo, this folk,

bluegrass and roots band is the house

band at the Red Barn in Deposit, N.Y.,

and has been performing for decades.

For a schedule of events, visit

www.stpatrickowego.org For more in-

formation on the festival, call the school

at 687-1770.
