PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 12 This term has been a very busy and successful one for our Year 12 students. Since the trial examinations we have started the HSC itself with practical exams and submissions of major works in Dance, Drama, Extension 2 English, Visual Arts, Textiles and Design, Design and Technology, Italian, French and Music. Everyone involved has been very impressed with the quality of work presented and we look forward to some outstanding results. We are currently planning events to celebrate the contributions of the current Year 12 to the school over the last six years. The major event will be our Graduation ceremony on Thursday September 19th. Families will receive invitations and more information over the next two weeks. Showcase Summer Series As the weather begins to warm up we start to look forward to our semester 2 showcase season. Following a review earlier this year, we are trialling a new look program this semester. Recognising, that the end of the year is a busy time for families with competing performance and social events, we have condensed the season into 3 weeks of performances and created some special one-off events. Although the shorter season may mean fewer performances for some groups, we believe that this will be more than compensated for by a season of large audiences and some exciting new opportunities. It should be noted that these changes are for Semester 2 only and that next year’s Semester 1 season will revert to the traditional model. The semester 2 program is currently being finalised, however a draft outline is: Week 6 (11-15 Nov) Opening Night: a multi venue concert experience with performances at St Georges Hall,

the Studio Theatre and outdoors Summer At St Georges: a night of music ensembles and individual performances Week 7 (18-22 Nov) Summer At the Studio. Two nights of senior drama companies and one night of music

soloists and Showcase elective performances Week 8: Schools Spectacular (no Showcase performances) Week 9 (2-6 Dec) Summer At the Seymour. Three spectacular nights to close the season. One night of

dance, one night of drama and music, and the finale of dance, drama and music New School Captains The newly elected prefects and I attended our annual prefect training day last week at the University of Sydney. It was a productive day and a great opportunity for the prefects to plan the next year as they take over such an important student leadership role. After the training day, the Prefect body elected our School Captains for 2014. Congratulations to Charlotte Regan and Toby Blome. I know that Toby and Charlotte will make an outstanding contribution over the next 12 months.

Student Achievements

In addition to our HSC successes, our students have continued to achieve both within and outside the school. Some of these achievements include: Our Tournament of the Minds teams achieved outstanding results at last month’s Sydney

competition. Our English Literature team (Georgia Brigg, Rhian Mordaunt-Buksh, Darcey Wilson, Gabriel Burke, Ella Kennedy, Meave Ireland-Jones and Lucy Lock) competed with great distinction receiving the Spirit of TOM award. Our Social Sciences Green Team (Harrie Hogan, Yasmina Chotchova, Milly Caley, Miranda Rodgers, Hannah Newton, Esme Durkan, and Jack McEvoy) received an Honours award while our Social Sciences Red Team (Claudia Catalanotto, Harry Boyd, Liam Mordaunt-Buksh, Luc Claringbold, Tom Bitti, Jordan Gregory-Duson and Angelina Tsinganos Cortazzo) also performed with distinction. These results continued our outstanding results from recent years and we are very proud of the students and their teacher, Jane Gray

Last month I had the great pleasure of attending

the Sydney Region final of the Premiers Debating Challenge where our Year 11 team finished runners-up becoming our most successful team in many years. Congratulations to the team of Charlotte Regan, Eileesha Smith, Toby Blome, Toni Flowers and Yazmin Bradley.

This week Amy Johnson of Year 11 received a Sydney Region 2013 Deadly Kids award.

The awards celebrate achievements and commitment of indigenous students throughout Sydney and Amy was certainly a very worthy recipient.

Finally, congratulations to Calum Newton of Year 12 whose band “Lunatics on Pogosticks”

won the Triple J Unearthed High competition. As a result, we all enjoyed their performance, along with San Cisco at a free concert late last month in St Georges Hall. It was a great day.

Expanding Horizons Concert Last month we again hosted students from schools in Zhengzhou. These talented students from China entertained us at a special performance in St Georges Hall. Earlier in the same week our music students performed at the Expanding Horizons Concert at the Sydney Opera House. Our orchestra, saxophone quartet and vocal trio performed brilliantly. Special mention must go to Sam Weller of Year 10 who had the distinction of conducting the orchestra. I am reliably told, by Mr Lewis-Jones, that Sam is probably the youngest person to ever conduct a full orchestra on the Opera House stage. It was a proud moment for Sam and our school. Staff Achievements and Farewells Congratulations to our Head Teacher Visual Arts, Jacquie Boon who last month was awarded a prestigious Premier’s Teaching Scholarship at a ceremony at Government House. Only 16 schol-arships were awarded from hundreds of applicants. Jacquie will use the scholarship to further her study of Asian Art. Lastly, at the end of this term we will farewell two of our hard working Head Teachers, Brett Stone and Michael Fischer. Brett has been promoted to the position of Assessment and Development Adviser at the DEC High Performance Directorate, while Michael will enjoy the start of a well-deserved retirement. Both have made an enormous contribution to our school and I know I speak on behalf of the entire community when I thank them and wish them the very best. They will be missed.

The Year 11 Yearly examinations began on Monday 2nd September and run until Friday 13th September. All students have been issued with examination information, including exam timetable, behavioural expectations throughout the exam period and illness/ misadventure procedures. Students should arrive at least twenty minutes before the scheduled exam starting time and if your child suffers an illness or misadventure on the day of the exam, contact me as the Year 11 Deputy Principal by 8.45am so that the exam can be rescheduled to another time during the examination block. Year 11 students return to class from 16th September and are expected to attend all lessons throughout the final week of term. The State Dance Festival will be held at the Seymour Centre from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th September featuring a range of our very talented students. Tickets are available through the box office at the Seymour Centre for performances every night at 7.30pm. If you can attend one of the performances, we are sure the students and staff would appreciate your support. The Year 12 showcase of practical work has been outstanding with some excellent performances, productions and major works being presented. This once again reflects the depth of talent at our school across a range of subject areas, along with the dedication and hard work of our teaching staff. Year 12 reports will be issued on Monday 16th September where students meet with their Curriculum Advisers to discuss the recent trial HSC results and their study plans for the HSC exams which commence from 14th October. We know this is an exciting, yet daunting time for our departing Year 12 students as they prepare for their HSC and look to the future, and we wish them all the very best. The final week of this term involves celebrations with a “Final Curtin” concert on Monday afternoon and a picnic/BBQ on Wednesday 18th at Drummoyne Pool. The Year 12 Graduation Day ceremony will be from 12noon on Thursday 19th September in St George’s Hall. Students in Years 7-11 will be dismissed from noon on that day. Year 12 Update

The last few weeks have been very busy for our Year 12 students and their teachers, particularly for the Dance, Drama and Music students as the HSC practical exams have been taking place. Most of the students have reported feeling very relieved that this aspect of their HSC has passed and they are now busy preparing for their written exams next term. Major works and projects have also been submitted for Design and Technology, Textiles and Design, English Extension 2 and Visual Arts students. I take this opportunity to write about the outstanding achievement of another Year 12 student. Niall Carpenter-Kirk is to be the proud recipient of the VET Excellence Award for Construction. Congratulations Niall. The quality of the work produced this year has been exceptional and I would like to thank our dedicated teachers who have worked tirelessly to support and guide our current HSC cohort. It has been very pleasing to see many students take advantage of this post-trial revision period and all Year 12 will meet with their curriculum advisors one final time on Monday 9th September to be issued with their final school report and discuss their preparation strategies for the HSC and goals post HSC. We know this is an exciting yet daunting time for our departing Year 12 students as they prepare for their HSC and look to the future, and we wish them all the very best. On a personal note, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with our Year 12 students as their guiding Deputy and I am looking forward to the final week of planned celebrations to commemorate the class of 2013. Week 10 Arrangements

In the final week of term we will be farewelling our Year 12 students with a number of events. Mr Gray has sent home a letter to all Year 12 parents outlining the arrangements for Week 10. It should be noted that the final day of formal classes for Year 12 will be on Monday 16th September with our Year 12 students performing a Farewell Final Curtain concert that afternoon.. The Year 12 Picnic will be held at Drummoyne Pool on Wednesday 18th September and the Graduation Day ceremony will take place on Thursday 19th September commencing at 12:00pm in St. Georges Hall. This will necessitate an early finish for students in Years 7 – 11 on that day. Year 11 Yearly Exams

The next few weeks are of particular importance for our Year 11 students as they have commenced their Yearly examinations on Monday 2nd September. I would advise all our students to approach these upcoming examinations seriously and ensure that they are well prepared for each exam. I would like to also remind our parents and students of the illness/misadventure process in place during an examination period. If a student is ill or suffers misadventure on the day of a scheduled examination they are required to contact the Deputy Principal in charge of their Year group in the morning. The Deputy Principal will then arrange for a rescheduling of that exam to take place within the examination period. Students are required to fill in the necessary illness/misadventure forms and attach any relevant medical or supporting documentation as outlined in the Senior Assessment Policy. The completed forms must be returned to the Deputy Principal within two days. I wish our Year 11 students all the very best as they conclude their preliminary courses. State Dance Festival

We have a large number of our dance students participating in the State Dance Festival at the Seymour Centre this week. Tickets are available through the box office at Seymour Centre for performances every night. The festival will be featuring performances by our very talented students. Thank you to our Dance staff for the commitment and involvement in such initiatives that provide valuable performance opportunities for our students.

Deadly Kids Awards

The achievements and success of Aboriginal students from Sydney region public schools will be celebrated of Friday 6th September at the annual Deadly Kids Doing Well Awards ceremony held at Carriage Works. The aim of the ceremony is to gather Aboriginal students who are doing well, along with their school communities and families, and celebrate their achievements together. This year Amy Johnson in Year 11 will be the recipient of the award from Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. I will be attending the ceremony this year and I look forward to celebrating the achievements of the Aboriginal students from our school community, as well as those from across the Sydney region group of schools. As the Deputy Principal in charge of Years 8, 10 and 12 for this term, I welcome the opportunity to discuss any of the events mentioned in this correspondence with you any time and I am also available to assist parents with any specific welfare or school matters. Finally, we would like to wish all members of the school community a safe and pleasant holiday. School resumes for everyone on Monday 7th October starting with a Week A timetable.

Congratulations to Calum Newton who won a nationwide radio competition to discover the next generation of aspiring musicians. Triple J radio has run the Unearthed High competition for the last couple of years in their quest to find and give voice to the rising talent amongst young Australians. Calum and his band, Lunatics on Pogosticks, were up against some stiff competition but emerged victorious on the back of their original lyrics and corbelled sound. Over 900 high school bands entered the competition in the hunt for a professional recording session and the chance to perform with San Sisco at their school. Lunatics on Pogosticks beat out other finalists such as Cypher and Under Scarlet Skies to score the ultimate gig, performing in front of hordes screaming teenagers in St Georges Hall last Friday. The three-piece band belted out their megaron indie tunes to a packed and jumping room. Their winning single Blood Clot was a huge hit and sent the crowd into a frenzy. The single has been recorded in the studio and can be heard via their unearthed profile on Triple J’s website. Well done to Calum and the band and keep an eye, and ear, out for Lunatics on Pogosticks over the next few years.

HSIE NEWS

Mock Trial

Our Mock Trial team finally ran out of steam on Thursday 29th August, and went out boldly to worthy winners Sylvania High. This, after previous wins against the likes of the mighty Fort Street High School. Congratulations go out to Will Bartolo, Jack Bromfield, Nick Bradbury, Remy Danoy, Orson Heidrich, Amy Kimball and Charlotte Regan for taking us further in the comp than we've been for a number of years! As does a huge thankyou to their teacher Jonathan Parnham and lawyer lawyer Elisabeth Nash from DLA Phillips Fox, who have devoted so much of their time organising and working with the team. Well done! Sharemarket Game

This term saw the HSIE faculty enter a number of teams into the ASX Schools Share market Game. The game involves syndicates being given a hypothetical $50 000 to invest in shares on the Australian share market. It develops skills in problem solving, data analysis, teamwork, research, political and global economic awareness, investment, budgeting and money management. All students in Year 11 Business Studies and Economics are playing this year, as well as a number of students in year 9 and year 8. University of Newcastle Business Plan Challenge

Year 11 Business Studies students have just finalised their business plans which have been entered into the University of Newcastle’s Business Plan Challenge. The competition has allowed students to explore their own interests, develop business skills and ideas, and to think about opportunities in the business world for the future. Prizes include a $2000 scholarship for the winner to study business, commerce or law at Newcastle Uni, as well as a number of cash prizes and entry into a draw to win an iPad. Good luck Year 11 Business Studies students! Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) 2012

The Global Young Leaders Conference provides a unique opportunity for selected students to engage in an intensive leadership and training experience organized by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. The HSIE faculty coordinates the nomination process, while the students and their parents then organise their attendance with the Conference organisers. For 2013 the HSIE faculty nominated nine outstanding nominees to GYLC in New York. These students were: Dan Hodgson, Jennifer Balcombe, Jaime Di Laudo and Beatrice Marks. The conference gave our students the opportunity to expand their perspectives and cultivate their leadership skills by examining and discussing global issues with distinguished diplomats and by visiting historical and modern-day centres of political, social and economic influence. Students participated in debates as UN delegates, representing a range of countries. The students returned with glowing reports and stories of inspiration, not only about the discussions and issues they covered but about the opportunities to make great friends from different backgrounds and perspectives from around the world. Congratulations to all the students who attended the GYLC and represented their school so well. Thank you also to Jonathan Parnham and the HSIE faculty for facilitating the nomination process to GYLC. Medieval Show

In Week 7, Year 8 finally got the chance to attend the Medieval Show presented by James Adams. James gave a very interesting and humorous insight into the armoury and weaponry of Medieval Europe, with opportunities for all students to get involved.

Debating is again the headline grabber this month as our teams continue to perform superbly. Our Year 11 team recently fought their way through to the Regional Final against Sydney Girls High School, taking them on in the beautiful venue of the Maiden Theatre in Botanical Gardens. In a contest that was, as the adjudicators told us, almost too close to call, we went down in a 2-1 split after arguing strongly that organ donations should be mandatory unless people opt out. This was arguably our best performance of the competition and to go down so narrowly to such an iconic debating school as Sydney Girls is no shame. The efforts this year of Charlotte Regan, Yazmin Bradley, Toby Blome, Eliesha Smith and Toni Flowers have been brilliant and it has been my absolute pleasure to coach and manage such fine young people. Their attitude and demeanour and willingness to learn is stunning and as I said recently, they epitomise the word excellence which is one third of our school motto. Not to be out done, our Year 10 team also soared this year, winning their zone and going down, in another close call, to Ashfield Boys HS. We were the negative for the topic that whistleblowers should be exempt from prosecution. Terrific performance from Veronica Von Arnim, Abbie Tilse, Georgia Brigg , Jarred Ziegler and Laura Stewart. Well done also to rookie coach Mr Jack Taylor who mentored and coached his team so admirably. His obvious passion for debating is highly valued and hopefully this will continue in coming years. Finally our flag is still flying with our 7 /8 team who are yet to finish their zone competition. They are, as we speak, still undefeated and show great potential for the future. Under the watchful eyes of Ms Leotta and Ms Hoddinott, these students are also doing the school proud. They are about to tackle Blakehurst High to determine the zone premiership. The efforts of Harry Boyd, Finn Koslowski, Esme Durkan and Ava Kalinauskas deserve praise and hopefully they will complete the trifecta of 2013 Zone Champions at this school. In summary, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts has become a virtual powerhouse in debating and I know that other schools practically tremble when they see that they have us as their opponents. Our students are confident in speaking to an audience, have poise, great communication skills and are knowledgeable in current affairs and world affairs. These, along with a clear understanding of debating method, are the essential ingredients for success. Other recent highlights include our Extension Two Showcase students proudly exhibited their recently-completed Major Works to a crowded library. The films, short stories, screenplays, scripts and speeches were well received by the audience which included, as always, the potential 2014 cohort of Ext 2 students. Again the poise and confidence of our kids shone through and the audience could not have been anything but impressed by the quality of the students’ work. May I thank Mr Chris Taylor and Ms Garnsey for their hard work this year with the students. For the three of us, teaching Extension 2 English is a passion and the diligence of the students certainly makes our late nights of proofreading and editing worthwhile. Another recent highlight was the visit to the school of children's’ picture book author Christopher Cheng who entertained all of Year 7 with his informative chat about his work. He certainly inspired them to go about their picture book assessment task with enthusiasm and rigour.

The English Faculty has been host to two interns teachers this term, Mr Sam Ferris and Mr Jack O’Brien ( son of ABC TV icon, Kerry O’Brien) and they have both been a huge hit with the students and have drawn praise from parents. We thank them for their work and wish them all the best for their future teaching careers. Almost finally, as we know, the school days of Year 12 are fast drawing to a close and the curtain is beginning to close on their time at this school. We wish them all the very best in their final weeks of revision and trust their Trial results have given them the foundations of some solid HSC results in Term 4. They, like me, will have mixed feelings about leaving this school but this is part of life. One chapter ends, another chapter begins. Best wishes to the 173 students in Year 12 for your HSC and, more importantly really, the rest of your lives. So this brings me to what will be my final comments in this newsletter as English Head Teacher at Newtown. As many of you may know, my thirty eight years of teaching in the wonderful public education system of NSW ends on the 20th September and I couldn’t imagine a better school to retire from. I have loved my eleven years at this terrific school and shall miss it terribly. I have made so many friends amongst the staff and students and hope that my retirement does not end these friendships. I am not embarrassed to say that I love the kids at this school: their warmth, their hard work, their smiles, their sense of social justice, their many performing talents , their sense of humour, their quirkiness, have made it a privilege to have worked with them over the years. I believe this school is emblematic of what public education is all about. Kids enjoying their days at school and being the best that they can be. Being inclusive, being tolerant and being articulate and keen to learn. What else could a school ask for? For my 11 years at the school I have had many occasions to applaud the performing arts expertise of so many talented students in dance, drama and music and I thank each and every one of them for the contribution they have made to my life. I would also like to thank the absolutely fantastic English staff I have had the pleasure to lead and work with over the years. Yes, a few people have come and gone but all of them, too many to name, have shared my passion for English teaching and I know that we have tried to instill this passion into our kids. The current English staff, with a healthy mix of the new and the not so new is as good a combination of teachers as we’ve had. They will all thrive under new leadership and I wish them all the very best for their professional futures. If teaching brings to them one fraction of the joy it has brought to me, they will relish the experience. It would be remiss of me not to also thank the entire staff of this school for their support and friendship over the years. The teaching staff, the senior exec, the ancillary staff…all fabulous people who genuinely care about our kids. Thank you also to the parents of our great kids for your support of our English programmes and activities over the years. Any school is a reflection of its community and this is so true of Newtown. So thanks everyone….stay healthy and stay happy. And as I always say to my classes, be nice to each other. Hopefully the school will have me back as a casual on the odd day or two. Now, if I get to look after a dance class..

from JOURNALISM CLASS The glass menagerie ensemble theatre On the first week of term 1, the Year 9 Drama Extension Class attended a performance of the Glass Menagerie at the Ensemble Theatre, where it was described as one of Tennessee Williams’ most powerful and haunting plays; it is a poignant reflection on the glories of times past, with echoes of loneliness, fragility and innocent hope. The class had just completed an assessment where they studied and performed the play. This involved studying the language, characters and themes of the play. The performance ran for 2 hours and 15 minutes with a short interval. The students who attended the performance all raved about it. “We learnt a lot from watching this particular production of The Glass Menagerie, it was very interesting seeing how the play can be perceived by directors and cast members. They made some choices, which really differed to our performances. I think it was very important for us to have seen the production. We left the theatre and the majority of the trip back to school was spent discussing all the tiny little details,” said one student who attended the performance. From the discussions I have had with the year 9-drama extension class, they all seemed to enjoy and learn from the performance.

VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT

The Principal opened the 2013 HSC Art exhibition in St Georges Hall on Tuesday 27 August. Many parents and school community friends attended and agreed that the works produced were diverse and of a very high standard. Ms Romeo currently on maternity leave called in to check out the exhibition. We wish all the HSC VA students the best of luck with marking of their artworks which will take place within the school and at the Marking Centre.
