SUKKOS ISSUESI am wondering if you could clarify whether women

are obligated in the mitzvah of sukkah. If we are not obligated, do we nevertheless receive “sachar” (spiritual reward) if we sit and eat in a sukkah? Do we make a bracha when sitting in the sukkah?

Since the mitzvah of sukkah can only be performed during the week of Sukkos, it is, by denition, a mitzvas asei shehazman gerama, a time-bound mitzvah, which is a class of mitzvos that are not obligatory upon women. Although women may choose to fulll a time-bound mitzvah even though they are not obligated, in past generations, when most people ate in shul or communal sukkos, most women did not have the opportunity to fulll this mitzvah. Nowadays, when most families eat alone in their private sukkah, women who choose to fulll this mitzvah are praiseworthy, and they receive sachar for their eorts. Whether or not they should recite the blessing is subject to much debate: Some poskim forbid it, and that is the custom followed by most Sepharadim and many Ashkenazim, particularly among the Chasidim. Other poskim allow women to recite the bracha just as men do, and women who have this custom should continue to do so.

What is a woman’s requirement vis-à-vis the Arba Minim? May I eat breakfast before shaking them?

Arba Minim is also a time-bound mitzvah and the basic halachah exempts women from performing it. Still, it is a long-standing custom for women to fulll this important mitzvah whenever they can and the poskim encourage them to do so. Unless they are weak or ill, it is appropriate for a woman not to eat a full breakfast before fullling the mitzvah, but she may drink or eat something light. Most Sepharadic women do not recite the brachah on Araba Minim. However, most Ashkenazi women, even those who do not recite the brachah on the mitzvah of sukkah, do recite the bracha (including Shehecheyanu) on the mitzvah of Arba Minim.

I have heard that it is not permissible to bring pots out to the sukkah. Does this apply even if I want to serve soup from the pot outside? What if I normally do bring pots or foil pans to the Shabbos table?

Bringing pots or pans to the sukkah is considered a denigration of the holiness of the sukkah and, as such, it is not permitted. Still, those who are accustomed, during the year, to bring pots to the dining room table may do so on Sukkos as well, particularly if the food will cool o or would not be able to be served properly otherwise. But as soon as they food is served, the pots must be removed from the sukkah.

I was under the impression that a decoration that falls o the sukkah walls is muktzah even on Chol HaMoed. My question is, may I hang up additional, new decorations on Chol HaMoed?

Decoration that fall of a sukkah walls or sechach are not muktzeh on Chol HaMoed and may be returned to the sukkah, although they are forbidden to be used for any other purpose. It is also permitted to add new decorations on Chol HaMoed.

In addition to laundering young children’s clothes on Chol haMoed when necessary, is it permissible to launder Yom Tov-related items, such as tablecloths, hand towels, and napkins?

Every household should see to it that they will have an adequate supply of tablecloths, hand towels and napkins to last for the entire Yom Tov. If this supply of items should run out due to unforeseen circumstances, the family should buy new items - if it will not entail undue expense - rather than launder the dirty items.

Is it an obligation or a mitzvah to drink wine on every day of Chol ha-Moed?

e mitzvah of Ve’samachta be’chagecha, rejoicing during the holiday, applies to Chol ha-Moed just as it applies to Yom Tov. Nowadays, when the Beis ha-Mikdash is no longer standing and we cannot rejoice by eating the meat of the korbanos, we can rejoice only by drinking wine. It is, therefore, a requirement for every person to drink at least 3 . oz. of wine [within 3-4 minutes] on each day of Chol ha-Moed.

Contemporary poskim debate whether or not one can fulll this mitzvah with non-alcoholic grape juice. Some hold that grape juice is just like wine concerning this halachah, while others hold that grape juice is invalid for this purpose.

But the mitzvah applies only to those who enjoy the taste of wine or grape juice and rejoice when they drink these beverages. ose who do not enjoy the taste of wine or grape juice and do not rejoice when partaking of them, are exempt from drinking. It is for this reason that the poskim write that women are not obligated to drink wine on Chol ha-Moed, since many women are not accustomed to drinking wine and do not rejoice when doing so.

What is the halachic status of Hoshana Rabba? Is it a semi-Yom Tov or just another day of Chol HaMoed? Is there an obligation to make a seudah on Hoshana Rabba or is it a minhag?

Hoshanah Rabbah is both another day of Chol Hamoed, as well as a signicant day in its own right. As such, whatever is permitted to do on Chol Hamoed is permitted on Hoshanah Rabbah as well. But for various halachic and kabbalistic reasons Hoshanah Rabbah is a very special day; a day dedicated to teshuvah and tellah, and in many respects we treat and honor it almost like a Yom Tov. It is customary in all circles to have a seudah on this day, but it is not an obligation to do so for someone who cannot.

Remembering The Tewels

On Shabbos Shuva, the sixth of Tishrei 5773, the entire Detroit community was cast into

a state of shock and dismay as the news of Pinchas Ben Chaim Yosef Reuven, Phillip Tewels’ passing reverberated throughout town. The tears had not yet dried from the passing of Phil’s mother, Zlata bas Yaakov, Zlata Tewel, on the twenty fourth of Elul 5772 and they were now mingled with fresh ones for Phillip. A year later, the tears still fall as the countless tales of this mother and son’s chesed are brought to light as the city continues to mourn their lost gems.

Along with his mother Zlata, Phillip Tewel ran Jewel Kosher Caterers, feeding presidents at White House Dinners, and hundred of celebrities at glittering Los Angeles events. He catered Rosh Hashana programs in Mackinac Island, and Pesach hotels for thousands in California. But it was his catering of many smaller simchas and the way he carried out his business that will forever endear him to the hearts of many people in the Detroit Jewish community. The Detroit community was Phillip’s family and he made every simcha his own.

Phil’s life was dedicated to helping other. It’s almost as if Jewel Kosher Catering was a storefront, a façade for chesed distribution. Phil was unassuming and quietly supported many family and institutions. Zlata worked “behind the scenes”, often spending twelve hours on her feet preparing and cooking the meals. The kitchen inside the red brick building of Dovid Ben Nachum was her second home. There she could be found in her black uniform and light blue head covering, living to give to others. It is hard to find two more dedicated and hard working people. They were “public servants” always putting their needs aside, for the needs of their community. Phillip never demanded payment and often times sponsored many bar mitzvahs and weddings. Food was often added to customer’s menus, just to ensure a nicer affair.

Phillip had a tremendous Ahavas Yisroel and only wanted to make people happy, and he did, by contributing to thousands of simchas. It was easy to take advantage of Phillip’s generosity for he simply could not say “no”. “Sure” “No problem”

were his most common phrases. Nothing was impossible for Phil, he was a ‘perpetual optimist’. No job was too big, or too small, he made everything work. He lived for other people, and never attracted any attention to himself.

Yet, everyone in Detroit knew him and loved him. “Can we imagine a Detroit without Phil Tewel by our side?” was spoken of Phil at his standing room only Levaya ,with over 1,000 pple in attendance. Phil had a Kesser Shem Tov, wherever he went, no matter what part of town, people stopped to say hello. Everyone considered him a friend. There was a sense of comfort and calm when one was around Phillip. He possessed a great Simchas Hachaim, a positive attitude, always finding the good wherever he was and in everyone. It did not matter to Phil whether someone was Chabad or Litvish, to the right or to the left, he loved all of Klal Yisroel, with all of his heart. It was not only his open hand, but rather his warm and caring nature that made him so well liked.

Phillip personified exemplary Ben Adom Lamakom as well, going to minyan every morning even when, as often happened, he had been catering a wedding until 4 AM the night before. He was kovei ittim, and always wanted to learn more. He kept a close kesher to Rav Pinchas Sheinberg ztl from his days in Yeshiva Torah Ohr. Phillip was a brilliant man. He was easily able to beat a calculator when dealing with his business, and applied his head to remembering and repeating his Torah studies as well. “Zlata turned into a queen every Friday night”, reminisced her granddaughter, “when she lit the candles the Kedusha surrounding her was almost palpable. She was a regal woman who had an unbelievable belief in her Creator.” Shabbos was her only day off and she spent it connecting with the Ribbono Shel Olam. Shabbos morning, rain or snow, Zlata made her way to her makom kavua at Rabbi Levin’s shul, and looked forward to going all week long. Shabbos afternoons were spent saying pirkei avos and tehilim. Later on in life, her large print siddur and magnifying glass were always by her side and in use.

Phillip exemplified incredible Kibud Av V’em. Phillip would work many long hours, seven days a week, together with his mother Zlata. He treated his mother with the ultimate respect, never losing his temper, exhibiting tremendous patience amidst their fast pace business. Phil took care of his mother at home as well, always tending to her specific needs and wants. Simple actions, such as reading the papers out loud when it became too difficult for his mother to see, were characteristic of Phil’s Kibud Em.

Phillip was very much a ‘family man’, and his siblings, nieces and nephews adored him. “My most cherished childhood memories,” spoke Yaakov Stoll, Phillip’s nephew at his levaya, “are the summers I spent in Detroit accompanying my uncle on his day to

day tasks. How lucky I felt to be ‘Phil’s nephew’. He would turn the mundane trip to the grocery store into an adventure.” As much as Phil gave to his community his love and warmth permeated his home. He brought a certain serenity to the Shabbos and Yom Tov tables as everyone present would bask in his beautiful Kiddush and Niggunim. He was the master storyteller, and with his vast knowledge, he always had something uplifting to share.

There is no end to the stories of Phillip Tewel’s chesed, warmth, ahavas yisroel and avodas Hashem. The Detroit community is left with a void that can only be filled with his memories and good deeds. May Phillip a person of “true and selfless Kiddush Hashem” and his mother Zlata - be melitze yosher for their family and all of Klal Yisroel.

Turn to Me RABBI DR. JERRY LOB

As Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur approach many of us are feeling a heightened sense of anxiety. But before we let this feeling paralyze us let us think about the gift that the month of Elul brings. It calls to us, declaring the message from Hashem: “Ani Ledodi Vedodi Li, I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me,” words of intimacy and connection. This is a promise that the Yemei Hadin, the days of judgment of Tishrei, are preceded by an entire month in which Hashem draws us close, whispering to each of us every day that He loves us.

Imagine the following scenario. A parent and child get into a serious argument and things are said by the child that are very hurtful to his father. A few days go by with no contact between the two of them. The son knows he has crossed a line and that his actions did damage to the relationship, that there are real consequences, painful ones, for his behavior. He knows too that he needs to take responsibility and apologize, but he’s too scared. Scared that his father will reject him, maybe even abandon him, and stop loving him. The child is stuck, unable to face his father, and himself. After a few days of painful silence the father calls his son. He makes no mention of the terrible argument or the tension that is heavy between them, but instead simply states: “I’m just calling to say I love you.” And then he calls again the next day with the same message and continues to call day after day for a month communicating warmly his genuine caring for his child. It is obvious that within this context of parental love the prospect of saying “I’m sorry” becomes less daunting and very doable.

As we move closer to Rosh Hashana it’s

natural to feel some trepidation about the judgment that these days represent. The prayers themselves are often scary, reminding us that so much is at stake, and so much of great importance is being decided at this time. And we know that fear can act as a barrier to feeling the intimate relationship that exists between each of us and Hashem that is at the heart of the Elul-Tishrei season. One may worry, “how can

I face Hashem, it’s too scary asking forgiveness yet again, for the same mistakes I confessed to, last year?” The month of Elul speaks to us “Ani Ledodi Vedodi Li.” It’s as if Hashem is reassuring us, “don’t’ be frightened, My beloved, our relationship is a close one. Yes, of course, you must take responsibility, repent, and be involved in all the steps of the Teshuva process, but don’t be scared. Calm yourself and remember the message of Elul, we’re close, it’s going to be alright. I’m here, just turn to Me.”

It’s so important for us to learn from Hashem, to walk in His ways. Look what Hashem does to make it easier for us to return to Him.

A whole month of I love you. What about those people in our lives who have hurt us? Perhaps a difficult child, one’s spouse, or a former friend. And yet we know that it hurts them so much to feel the distance and the coldness. Can we reach out with warmth and caring to smooth the way for them to do what they must do, taking responsibility and apologizing? It’s so worth it. And it makes Hashem proud.

Heavenly InterventionMrs. Friedman, the third grade Hebrew teacher, needed some supplies from a supply cabinet that was seldom used and was secured with a lock. She didn’t know the combination, and called Rabbi Weinstein to give it a try.

Rabbi Weinstein placed his fingers on the lock’s dial and raised his eyes heavenward for a moment. Then he confidently spun the dial and opened the lock.

Seeing how impressed Mrs. Friedman was with this demonstration of faith, he smiled and confided, “The numbers are written on the ceiling.”

Citizen has always been a title of honor not easily attained. In the city-states of ancient

Greece and especially in the Roman Empire, citizenship was a highly prized distinction. It was a recognition of social and economic status and a guarantee of special rights and privileges. But what does citizenship signify in Jewish society?

Let us take a look at the Torah’s presentation of the mitzvah of sukkah. After the uplifting experience of the High Holidays, we are enjoined to build an impermanent booth and make that our primary place of residence for an entire week. “You shall dwell in booths for seven days,” the Torah tells us, “every citizen of Israel.”

This is an unusual choice of words. The Torah always directs itself to “all the people of Israel.” Yet here, the Torah seems to limit the injunction to people of status and privilege. We know, however, that this is not so, that the mitzvah of sukkah is universal, regardless of class and social status.

The commentators explain that the Torah is being as inclusive here as everywhere. The use of the term citizen, however, is meant to teach us an important lesson. Jewish citizenship does not derive from an accumulation of worldly possessions, high social status or political power. Quite the contrary. It derives from a deep faith in the benevolent guidance of the Creator, from a focus on spirituality rather than materialism.

Where does this supremely Jewish attitude manifest itself? In the sukkah. When the harvest is in and the weather grows cold, the entire world withdraws to the warmth and security of home and hearth, but not the Jewish people. We leave the comfort of our homes and celebrate the festival of joy in our makeshift booths to show that we are in Hashem’s hands. If we have faith, we are secure anywhere, and we if we don’t, we are secure nowhere. Those who enter the sukkah are the true citizens of Israel.

traveler from a distant land paid a visit to a great sage. Many people stood on line for the privilege of spending a few brief moments with the sage, and it was fully an hour before he was allowed to enter.

The sage sat at the head of a rough-hewn table, which groaned under the weight of his holy books; the furnishings of the room were threadbare.

The sage lifted his kindly, wise eyes, greeted the traveler warmly and invited him to sit down. The chair groaned angrily under the traveler’s bulk, but fortunately, it did not collapse.

“If you would forgive me,” said the traveler, “I would like to ask a personal question.”

“Go right ahead,” said the sage.“You are so famous and celebrated. People

come to ask you advice and blessing from all over the world. Why isn’t there any decent furniture in this room?”

“A very good question,” said the sage. “But let me respond with a question of my own. Where is your own furniture?”

“Back home, of course.”“But why isn’t it here with you?”“Because I am a traveler. I am only passing

through this place.”“Ah, that is indeed the answer. And it is also my

answer to your question. I too am only a traveler. I too am only passing through this world. In the few years I will spend here, I have no need for fine furniture.”

In our own lives, we are inevitably absorbed by material pursuits. We have to earn a living to put food on the table, to provide health care for our families, to pay the mortgage and tuition. We need to replace the old car, and the children need braces. But once a year, we should step back and put it all in perspective. When we enter the sukkah, we face the true reality of our existence, that the kindness of Hashem protects and sustains us and not the walls we build around ourselves. When we accept this knowledge into our hearts and respond with the transcendent joy of the festival, that is when we are granted our citizenship papers.

Just Desserts BY RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

The Talmud in Tractate Avodah Zarah talks about the future. It details for us a scenario

that will occur after the final redemption, when the G-d of the Jews and His Torah are known and accepted by all of mankind. The entire world will see the great reward meted to the small nation that endured an incessant exile while following the Torah scrupulously. Then the idol-worshippers from other nations will line up before G-d and complain, “what about us?” Had we been given the Torah we, too, would surely have kept it! Why are you only rewarding the Jewish people?” The Talmud tells us that G-d makes a deal. “All right,” He tells them. “I’ll give you one easy mitzvah. If you observe it correctly, fine. However, if you do not, then your complaints are meaningless.

The Talmud tells us He will give them the mitzvah of Sukkah. G-d will then take out the sun in all its glory and the protection of the Sukkah will be no match for its rays. These idol-worshippers, predicts the Talmud, will kick the walls of the Sukkah and flee in disgust.

There are many mitzvos in the Torah. 613 to be exact. And there are quite a number of difficult ones. Some are conducive to despair and disheartenment without a broiling sun. Why, then, was the mitzvah of Sukkah chosen to be the cause celebre that differentiates our commitment to that of an idolator?

Rabbi Paysach Krohn, in his first book of the Magid Series tells the story of a Reb Avraham who was about to enter a restaurant one late spring afternoon. Upon entering, he noticed a familiar vagrant Jew, known to all as Berel the beggar, meandering outside.

Reb Berel, rumor had it, was a formidable Torah scholar back in the old country, but had his life shattered physically and emotionally by Nazi atrocities. He was a recluse, no one knew exactly where or how he lived: but he bothered no one, and not too many people bothered with him.

Reb Avraham asked the loner to join him for a meal. He was about to make a business trip up to Binghamton and figured that he might as well prepare for the trip with more than a hot meal - he would begin it with a good deed.

Reb Berel gladly accepted the offer; however, when it came time to order, he asked for nothing more than two baked apples and a hot tea. Reb Avraham’s prodding could do nothing to increase the poor man’s order. “All I need are two baked

apples and a steaming tea,” he insisted.Reb Avraham’s trip to Binghamton was uneventful

until the rain and the darkness began to fall almost simultaneously. As if dancing in step, the darker it got, the heavier the deluge fell. All Reb Avraham remembered was the skidding that took him over the divider and into oncoming traffic on Route 17 in Harriman, New York. He came to shortly after two tow trucks had pulled his wrecked car from a ditch and lifted him to safety. Refusing hospitalization, he was driven to a nearby motel that was owned by the Friedmans, a Jewish couple who were readying the place for the summer migrations.

Mr. Friedman saw the battered Reb Avraham and quickly prepared a comfortable room for him. His wife quickly prepared a little something for him to eat. She brought it out to a shocked and bewildered Reb Avraham. On her serving tray were two baked apples and a glass of steaming tea.

When the Jews left Egypt, they had nothing to look at in the vast desert but faith. They built simple huts, almost in declaration: “Hashem we will do ours, we are sure You will do yours.” And those simple huts, those Sukkos, protected them from the heat, the cold, the wind, and the unknown. Hashem tells the prophet Jeremiah to tell his folk, “I remember the kindness of your youth as you followed Me in an unsowed desert.” (Jeremiah 2:2)

Perhaps when the final redemption arrives, it will again be the simple Sukkah that will stand as the protectorate and advocate of the People who stood for 2,000 years in the face of idolators, who invited the Jews to join them... or die. So, when we enter the Sukkah this year, let us remember that it is only a small Sukkah stop on a long journey home. And when we arrive there, the Sukkah will be there once again to greet us as it was more than 3,300 years ago in the Sinai Desert. After all, it’s nice to be served at the end of a 2,000-year-long journey with just desserts. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org
