Fall is just around the corner, and I’m delighted to share a few of our upcoming programs, events and exhibits.
First, I’m pleased to announce that cookbook author, Joanne Neft, and Real Food Catering with Laura Kenny will be featured on October 2, during our “real food, real art, real music” event held, once again on the rooftop of Blue Line Arts. The “Farm to Fork” movement has really become a great experience for freshly grown produce, local wine and breweries. Our event, is the only event that features the “real food” of Placer County. I do hope you’ll join us this year.
Our 3rd season of music is nearing the end, and we’re proud to finish the year with Brazilian Guitarist, Stephen Holland, and vocals from Florencia Duneyvich. You won’t be disappointed when you experience the richness from these intimate performances with exceptional musicians. The last performance, with LA Jazz vocalist, Rachel Lauren was breathtaking, and nearly a sold out performance.

As election time is nearly upon us, the “Politically Charged” exhibit featuring more than 40 provocative works of art speaks volumes through a genre of mediums and controversies. This show, certainly, cannot be missed-you’ll walk away with questions, opinions and more to explore. As well, the “Art Bra” show speaks to women’s issues and breast cancer awareness. See how artist depict the celebration of women and the challenges and laughs shared by many.
Next year, you’ll be hearing more about our digital creative lab, donated by California State University of Sacramento, gearing young techies toward digital arts, and young artists towards technology in the arts....please let us know if you can sponsor a child to participate in our classes in the spring.
Join us soon, and celebrate the arts!
Sincerely,
Julie Hirota

CURATOR’S CORNER
3RD SATURDAY SPONSORS
We are so happy about the response to the call for “Politically Charged” and the “Art Bra V” shows at Blue Line Arts. 105 artists submitted 267 pieces to the Politically Charged show which gave our juror, Shelly Willis, Director of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts, large selection of wonderful pieces to select from. We had 68 artists submit to the Art Bra V Show, which was a great gesture of support for Women’s Wisdom Art and Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation. I am very proud of the artists that participated in applying for these two shows, as artists we don’t have a lot of opportunities to voice how we feel about the current events and make a direct difference in people that are suffering at the hands of cancer.

Who is your favorite artist and why? TK Anderson is my heart and a brilliant artist who goes by the social media handle “Teekthesneak.”
How did you get your start? I think I was inspired by my grandma who had no artistic training, but busy, creative hands.
What are you most proud of? My three children. Each is outstanding in his/her own right; individuals who think outside the box.
What has been your biggest challenge as an artist? Finding time to express through my art all of the inspiration that I find in my everyday world.
What do you see happening in the next 5 years? I hope to create amazing art using only the vast supply of materials I have stashed in my studio.
What is a hidden talent of yours? Mmmm…deliver a baby? Do the splits? Dance a hot salsa? Throw an awesome party? Pick your poison.

What is art? The cave paintings in Spain, ancient Egyptian artifacts, Greek sculpture and Italian fresco paintings have all been determined to be art; but so is a urinal turned on its side and renamed “Fountain”. So the definition of art today has evolved to “it’s any human idea or undertaking” or “it’s art if I say it is”.
I think the answer can be twofold based on who is responding to the question - the artist or the audience. To the artist, art is a motivation to create. As for myself, life’s experiences leave me with a desire to react to the event. Painting a picture is how I’ve learned to
come to terms with my feelings. And after the making of the picture, if I have been true to myself, the motivation is purged and artwork is the result. I proclaim it “Art” even if no one else says it is.
The artist shows the piece and if they have been inventive and skillful it should be clear what the intent of the work is. At this point the audience judges the work great, good, bad or non-art. An individual can be moved by a piece for whatever reason and proclaim it as great art and the rest of the world can designate it as non-art; so the consensus is that it is non-art.
WHAT IS ART ?
Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 25
However, the context in which the artwork is viewed can alter the verdict. What if, in the future, that non-art piece resurfaces and a deeper understanding and appreciation that corresponds with the artwork emerges; then the agreement at that time would most likely be that it is art. Whew, we could go on forever with that one.
Searching for one definition of art is futile. I like the
pragmatic definition that one of my favorite artists put forth: “You make something from nothing and people pay you for it.”
