February 17, 1958: During a brief trip to the Bay Area, Eleanor Roosevelt visited KQED’s studios to appear on the interview program Kaleidoscope, hosted by Station General Manager Jim Day.

Martin Yan’s Taste of Vietnam airs Saturdays at 10am on KQED 9 beginning September 13.

Although our September 30 event with Martin Yan and Jacques Pépin has already sold out, we are happy to let KQED members know about three new events.

Ken Burns is back with a new film that weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt — three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics — and marks the first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative. The Roosevelts follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin,

Walter; Members of The Better Angels Society, including Jessica & John Fullerton; The Pfeil Foundation — David, Mindy, Robert & Daniel Pfeil; Joan Wellhouse Newton; Bonnie & Tom McCloskey; and The Golklin Family.

The Roosevelts is locally funded by

who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other and, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of the national parks, the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal, the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role. But it is also an intimate human

story about love and betrayal, personal courage and the conquest of fear, and family loyalty. In addition to the television broadcast beginning September 14, The Roosevelts will be available in its entirety on multiple digital platforms, including at PBS.org; via devices such as Xbox, Roku and Apple TV; via the PBS mobile apps for iPhone and iPad Touch; and in digital media stores such as iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play and Vudu. Episodes will be available on demand beginning the morning after the broadcast and for the following two weeks.

KQED and San Francisco Opera again bring spectacular productions and world-class artists to your living room. The fifth season of the acclaimed series showcases four recent San Francisco Opera productions and is hosted by celebrated mezzo-soprano Frederica “Flicka” von Stade. First up is I Capuleti e i Montecchi, the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet accompanied by some of Bellini’s most beautiful melodies; then comes Verdi’s Attila, a complex look at an ambitious warrior

The Return of Glorious Opera

San Francisco Opera productions begin airing Thursday, September 4, at 8pm on KQED 9.

@Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz KQED Arts provides exclusive access to unprecedented exhibit.

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is internationally renowned both as a maker of provocative art and as a passionate advocate for human rights and freedom of expression. His art and ideas find a compelling new context in a site-specific exhibit on Alcatraz from Sep-tember 27, 2014 through April 26, 2015. Ai’s sculpture, sound and mixed- media works will occupy four locations in the former prison: the New Industries Building, A Block, the hospital and the dining hall. With the exception of the dining hall, these spaces are usually off-limits to the public, but will be open throughout the run of the exhibit. @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz prompts visitors to consider the implications of incarceration and the possibilities of art as an act of conscience. For Ai, these are not just artistic themes; they are facts of life. A vocal critic of the Chinese government, Ai was secretly detained by Chinese authorities for 81 days in 2011 on charges of tax evasion and is still not permitted to leave China. As a result, he is developing the artwork for the exhibit from his studio in Beijing, with the help of the FOR-SITE Foundation and

collaborators including Amnesty Interna-tional, Human Rights Watch and other organizations. KQED Arts has exclusive access to the exhibit. Go behind the scenes, connect with the organizers and installers, and learn more about Ai Weiwei the artist.

Becoming CaliforniaExploring the state’s geological past, present and future

Science

Narrated by award-winning actress Jane Fonda and with an original score by legendary musician Pat Metheny, the new two-hour documentary Becoming California tells the epic story of environmental change on America’s western edge. It’s the story of natural change across time — how colliding land-forms interact with the ocean and atmosphere to create one of the most beautiful, diverse and biologically rich places on the planet. It is also the modern, cautionary tale of human transformation, in which California’s natural wealth is mined with textbook abandon. But these stories of change are merely the preface to an even greater story: the California of tomorrow.

KQED Arts will be in San Jose for the South First Fridays Art Walk, a self-guided evening tour that takes you through local galleries, museums and independent businesses, featuring exhibits and special performances. Join KQED and local artists in Gore Park for live painting and drawing, artist demonstrations and giveaways.

Using California as its inspiration, the film tackles one of the most important questions of our time: Can nature and civilization coexist? Becoming California examines this question by exploring the state’s diverse, beautiful and yet astonishingly transformed environments. It offers compelling interviews with top scientists, educators and business leaders as well as stories of how Californians today are discovering ways to forge new partnerships with nature.

The KQED presentation Becoming California airs Wednesday, September 10, at 10pm on KQED 9.

Friedman speak on Monday, September 29, at 8pm at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. For a chance to win even more prizes, visit The Giveaway (kqed.org/giveaway) and check out other contests.

Education

How can games unlock a rich world of learning? That is the big question at the heart of the growing educational games and learning movement. KQED’s MindShift has created a Guide to Games and Learning, which explains key ideas in game-based learning and pedagogy, helps make sense of the available research, and provides suggestions for practical use.

The collection of posts will evolve into a downloadable guide and can be used as a touchstone for thoughtful consideration of best practices for teachers and parents.

Annuity rates for individuals range from 4.4 percent at age 60 to 9 percent at age 90 and older.

Your gift, funded with cash, stock or mutual funds, will bring you income for life and may reduce your taxes. It will also help build the KQED Endowment and support KQED’s programming. Created as a way to bring fresh perspectives to KQED audiences while supporting California’s talented independent filmmakers, KQED’s Emmy Award–winning series Truly CA has become a home for a variety of voices from across the state. This season brings films about a rock icon turned rehab counselor in Los Angeles (Bob Forrest, pictured), lowriders and activism in San Diego, the making of the Bay Bridge light sculpture, marijuana farming in Humboldt County and seven decades of work from a famed San Francisco photographer.

The tenth season of Truly CA begins Sunday, September 7, at 6pm on KQED 9. Watch films from past seasons online any time.

Diseases that were largely eradicated in the United States a generation ago — whooping cough, measles, mumps — are returning, in part because nervous parents are skipping their children’s shots. NOVA’s “Vaccines — Calling the Shots” travels around the world to track epidemics, explore the science behind vaccinations and shed light on the risks of opting out. Airs Wednesday, September 10, at 9pm on KQED 9.
