The General Secretary’s thoughts.

I am not ashamed to witness for my Jesus!

‘So, do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord’ wrote Paul to his young spiritual son Timothy (2 Timothy 1:8). We, the followers of Christ ought to have an inherent desire to witness for the Lord. Yet, on many occasions we fail and regret later. Why? Fear of rejection, would we say the right things, a low self-image of being a Christian, a backslidden Christian life and so on are some reasons. Young Timothy was encouraged not to shy away being a powerful witness. How can we not to be ashamed to witness for Jesus?

Anointed by Holy Spirit: At 30, when Jesus began His ministry, He was anointed by the Holy Spirit, full of Spirit, in the power of the Spirit and led by the Spirit (Luke 4:1,14). In Acts 1:8, the disciples received the power of the Holy Spirit, to be witnesses. Many follow Christ religiously, bereft of the Holy Spirit's power. They depend on muscle power, money power, intellectual influence, organizational authority and oratory skills. Jesus preached the Good News to the poor, in the anointing of Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18). Be anointed by the Holy Spirit! You will not be ashamed to witness for Jesus.

Be bold to speak: Paul reminded Timothy that every believer receives the spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline from God (1Timothy 1:7). So why are we timid? The slave girl in 2 Kings 5:3 was unbelievably bold, not worried about her social status or her humble circumstance. She was filled with love of God. She was proud of being an Israelite girl. Her knowledge of God and His prophet made her bold. She practiced her religion in a foreign land. The best way to learn to speak a new language is by speaking it. Reading and writing is insufficient. Until you speak you will not be proficient. Jesus' disciples should keep on speaking about Jesus. “Don't be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent” (Acts 18:9).

Confess Jesus: Some people think Jesus was a good man, god-man, guru, philanthropist, entrepreneur, philosopher, god of the Christians, the virgin Mary's son, infant Jesus, healer, problem-solver, miracle worker or even one who loves burning candles! Some of these are opinions, half- truths, but not the truth. He is the ONLY One who has the authority to forgive sins. People who experience Jesus as a healer will talk about Him as a healer. But the ones who experience forgiveness of sins will confess Jesus as their Savior. (Matthew 1:21) They will confess that Jesus is the ONLY atoning sacrifice for sins (1John 2:2). Be confident that Jesus has forgiven all your sins. Then you will not be ashamed to witness.

Discern opportunities: Philip, the Evangelist (Acts 21:8) was an ordinary person, chosen among the seven, (Acts 6:1-6) who aligned well with the Holy Spirit, even though his job was to wait at tables. Not all of us are called to be popular crusade speakers like Billy Graham or Theodore Williams. Philip discerned the Spirit's leading and shared the Gospel wherever the Holy Spirit asked him to (Acts 8:26,29, 40). The Spirit is always faithful to fill, stimulate and motivate to move and to speak through a disciple's life. One must yield to Him to experience the impact. I regret the times I disappointed the Holy Spirit for not discerning and disobeying. Be discerning to witness as opportunities present themselves.

Exalt Jesus at any cost: “Jesus, the author of life, raised from the dead, the Lord and

Dear Outreach Readers,

The Land of India is an Enigma. In spite of the incredible

diversity we are still one Nation. We have just celebrated

our 68th independence day; we have made tremendous

progress. There are Indians on the list of the most powerful people on this world

and on the list of the wealthiest people on this planet. India has one of the best

labour force in the world. The poverty level in India has marginally come down.

These factors make us proud.

Nevertheless not every pursuit and ambition is geared towards nation

building. One can see sheer selfish pursuits and aggrandizement as in the case of

this person from Mumbai, a public figure, who has stitched a shirt made of gold

just to get into record books.

That brings us to the matter of choices. If we trust God and make our choices

with eternity in mind, then we will definitely be salt and light in this needy world.

Such was the case with Dr. Augustine who went to serve the poor in Liberia

during his Sabbatical but passed away.

In this issue we are bringing out our ministry to the youth. India is termed as

the young Nation. What a challenge for us to minister to the youth to help them

make the right choices in life! That will honor God and give immense satisfaction

to them. We need to join hands to reach our youth. We will be glad to help the

churches in sharing our resources.

We live in a time where people worship success. This has permeated into our

churches as the word 'Blessing' is grossly misunderstood. In the bygone era,

people who were highly educated and wealthy in the worldly standards kept

everything on the altar to go to places the Lord directed them to. They became a

blessing. Our Bible Study in this issue deals with the popular teaching of

Prosperity Gospel and how it is affecting our Christian youth.

We have also featured articles challenging the youth. Testimonies of some of

our young missionaries and those who were challenged by our youth ministry

add a fine flavor. These youngsters have found the joy of serving the Lord and in

turn have become a blessing.

We cannot move forward without the power of Prayer. As usual there is the

prayer grid to fuel your prayer time. Thanks for praying for us. We are blessed to

have worthy partners like you.

Happy Reading

From all of us here

Nelson Dinakaran, Editor

Our dear prayer partners and supporters,

Bible StudyChrist” was the message preached by the disciples. They knew how to exalt Christ at any cost in all circumstances. Many think they need flowery language to witness. Some feel that they are not competent to speak to elite intellectuals. However, the Bible says, “Not many of us are wise by human standards, but God has chosen the foolish, weak, lowly things of the world, so that no one may boast before Him” (1 Corinthians 1:26-29). Don't boast about your wisdom and strength (Jeremiah 9:23,24) but boast in the Lord and the Cross of Christ (Galatians 6:14).

Billy Sunday, an American athlete was born in poverty. After becoming a popular baseball player, he turned out to be the most celebrated and influential evangelist of his time. He exalted the Lord Jesus, though he was rich. Isaac Watts who authored 788 hymns wrote, “I'm not ashamed to own my Lord, or to defend His cause; maintain the honor of His Word, The glory of His cross.” Jesus, my God! I know His name, His name is all my trust; nor will He put my soul to shame, nor let my hope be lost.” Let this be the song of each disciple of Jesus!

The next General Secretary: I am happy to announce that the IEM Board has selected Rev. Dr. Raja Singh Elias as the next IEM General Secretary. He is appointed as the Associate General Secretary with immediate effect and will take time to reflect for few months before he assumes charge as the General Secretary - Designate from June 2015. We record our thanks and appreciation to these members of the Board and Society.

When you read this issue, please pause and pray for the young people of India. We need hundreds of young people to go as harvesters in India and outside. Christian parents and grand parents! we should dedicate our children for God's Mission.

Pray for me as I will be ministering among the Friends of IEM, USA and prayer partners during September.

With loving regards,

Yours in His joyful ministry,

P. John Wesley

(The God of the Bible loves to bless us so that we will be a blessing. However a wrong understanding of this would hamper our growth and stop us from being His effective witnesses fulfilling His plan. In this Bible study Sam. K. John deals with such a teaching and gives us a timely warning. Read on…)

Sam. K. John

The Student Volunteer Movement (SVM) was formed when a group of university students attended a Bible study conference organised by D. L. Moody in 1886. 100 young men committed their lives for overseas missions in the conference and 20,500 went out as foreign missionaries in 60years. Those young men were not 'invalid' or less competent people but the best of the best men and women who passed out of prest ig ious institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, and Yale.

Reading historical accounts like this is truly inspiring. Nevertheless, they also make us wonder why such missionary zeal is missing among Christian youth of our day. The number of young people coming forward to serve God in Indian missions, especially cross cultural missions, is going down day by day. There is a desperate cry for new mission recruits from most mission agencies. The missionary wave from south to north, which was so evident in the 1960s, 70s,

80s and early 90s, is now a bygone story.

Digging deeper - Several factors can be attributed to the decline of the missionary spirit. One such is the appeal and influence of Prosperity Gospel on Christian youth in recent decades. This not only turns believers away from the t r u t h s o f t h e S c r i p t u r e , m o r e importantly, it is a silent killer of the missionary zeal.

Why it appeals? - India is at the most prosperous phase in its entire history now and hence there is a lot of growth opportunity and access to money in the system. There is a dream in every young Indian today dream to achieve, succeed and to be affluent. In such a context, passages like Deut. 28:1-14, Gal. 3:14, Mk. 11:24 and 3 Jn.2 are harped and used as a ‘magic wand’ promising success and material blessings to Christian youth. The prosperity Gospel teaches that it is God’s will for every believer to be prosperous materially. Thus, young

Blessings, both spiritual and material, are given by God to His children with a divine purpose the purpose of sharing the Gospel of grace to the ends of the earth.

The very moment a person accepts Jesus Christ, he or she loses the right to live for him or herself.

believers who are already craving for success and riches find it very appealing because it can fulfil their worldly desires.

Blessings: What is the purpose? - A warped understanding of ‘blessing’ is the core issue. Blessing is considered as an end in itself, not as a medium or channel to glorify God. It is a fatal mistake to assume that God’s goal for your life is material prosperity or popular success. On the contrary, the Bible gives plenty of warnings to believers against love of money, greed, wealth and covetousness I Tim. 3:3, Heb. 13:5, Eph. 5:5, I Tim. 6:10, Lk.12:5, Matt. 6:19, 24. A believer is called to work hard (2 Thess. 3:10) and at the same time called to lead a content life (Phil. 4 : 1 1 - 1 3 ) . P r o s p e r i t y preachers argue that as born again believers we are redeemed from the curse of the law and are heirs to Abraham's blessing and God's promises of prosperity and success citing Gal. 3:29. This is a serious misrepresentation. God has made it very clear that the blessings infered here are spiritual and they are for an ultimate purpose “…all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Gen.12:13). Again we read in Gen. 22:18, “In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.” Therefore, the blessing given to Abraham is the promise of Jesus Christ who will become the Saviour of the world. Paul in Galatians chapter 3 talks about it very elaborately. Even the material blessings given to Abraham and his descendants in OT times had a purpose to draw other nations to the knowledge of the living God (Isa. 49:6). Israel failed to

understand this. They thought that the blessings of Jehovah were theirs and theirs alone. Blessings, both spiritual and material, are given by God to His children with a divine purpose the purpose of sharing the Gospel of grace to the ends of the earth.

Getting the right Focus: - The abundant life promised in the Scripture has little to do with material abundance or worldly success. If riches were a reasonable goal for the godly, Jesus would have pursued it. But He did not, preferring instead to have no place to lay His head (Matt. 8:20). Likewise, when Peter and John

met the lame beggar at the gate, they could only say, “Silver or gold we do not have…”And Paul could only write, “To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated

and we are homeless.” The Scripture calls us to focus our lives on God’s kingdom and righteousness (Matt.6: 33) A believer is called to work hard (2 Thess. 3:10) and at the same time called to lead a content life (Phil. 4:11-13) whereas Prosperity Gospel calls us to focus our lives on this world and its riches. Do not be deceived! When we focus our efforts on building His kingdom, he promises to take care of all our needs (Matt. 6:8, Phil 4: 5, 6, 19).

Desires: Yours or His? - Prosperity Gospel assumes that human beings are capable of directing their own lives the way they desire through ‘a certain kind of faith’ or ‘positive confession’ or ‘visualization’. “Anything you desire can be achieved.” This teaching not only questions God’s

sovereignty but also makes Him a jinn in the hands of His children. Moreover, there is utter disregard for God’s will in an individual’s life. This goes against the very fundamental call to Christian Discipleship and the Lordship of Christ in every believer. In Lk. 9: 23-24 Jesus made it clear that his disciples are to yield their dreams and desires to Him and in exchange take up His dreams and desires. In other words, the very moment a person accepts Jesus Christ, he or she loses the right to live for him or herself. Paul understood this very well, “And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” What is the dream and desire of Jesus? To see a great multitude from every nation, every tribe and every language, rejoicing in heaven (Rev. 7: 9-10). That is why he gave us the great commission (Matt. 28:16-20). In the past, hundreds and thousands of young men and women left their motherland for the sake of fulfilling this desire of Jesus.

Sherwood Eddy, an American missionary who worked in India, remarks, “I was one of the first of sixteen thousand student volunteers who were swept into what seemed to us nothing less than a missionary crusade. We were considered fanatical by some. Many sacrificed early plans and ambitions for wealth, power, prestige or pleasure, to go to some distant country about which they knew little save its abysmal need. We felt that we were in one team, working for one world, under one captain.”

One Life: What do you want to do with it? - Generally speaking, the virtue of

sacrifice has no place in today’s competitive and success oriented world. I’m afraid the value of sacrifice is lost in the Church too. Very seldom one will hear a

Prosperity preacher talk about sacrifices. It is all about victory, success, upward mobility and popularity. Perhaps, the only call ‘to sacrifice’ one hears from the Prosperity preachers is the appeal made by them for money. The real motive here is not ‘giving for God,’ rather it is ‘giving to get more.’ In such a context, the call for sacrificial involvement in God’s kingdom doesn’t appeal. The cry of the mission fields does not have any effect. It falls on deaf ears and hardened hearts.

Whether full time or part time, without a willingness to sacrifice, there is no way by which the Kingdom of God can expand in the world. For Revelation 7:9-10 to become a reality, God counts on young men and women who will give their lives like the apostle Paul who said, “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the Gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24. Dear young people, you have just one life to live. Living it for the sake of Jesus and His kingdom is the best way to spend it.

The Challenge of Youth in IndiaWe are witnessing a phenomenal advancement in technology over the last three

decades, and our citizens are experiencing remarkable social and cultural changes. In the center of these changes stands the youth of today. There are some facts that are gripping and give us a mixed feeling of great optimism along with a sense of fear.Nearly two-thirds of Indians are under 35; half are under 25. By 2020, India will be the youngest country in the world, with a median age of 29 years, compared with a median age of 37 years in China at that point. India’s large youth population, often called a “demographic dividend,” could potentially make India the biggest consumer market and the biggest labor force in the world.

Along with all these there are also complex problems that is facing the youth. Most of the problems facing today's youth are not restricted to any one ethnic or religious group, but affect young people generally.

There is a growing disenchantment and the youth are angry and resentful over many issues.

The Materialistic society fueled by Greed: The society has become very materialistic. Wealth has become the yardstick of status in the society. The youth are also affected by these values and try to adopt short cuts to rise in life quickly creating a confusion and ambiguity concerning moral issues: What is right and wrong?

Prevailing corruption: India finds itself standing at an abysmal 84th place according to transparency international. Unemployment: 62.8% of Post-Graduates in Science are without jobs.

Unmet Aspirations: The youth in the communities that are considered low have been exploited for ages, they want to come up in life and want to assert themselves, and carve their own space and identities.

Naxalism is a growing menace among the youths. 14 years and above are involved in this.

Suicides : 14.5 deaths per 1,00,000 people. Suicide is the Fourth leading cause of death. Out of every suicide reported every 15 minutes in India, one is committed by a youth in the age group of 15 to 29.

Addictions: 20 million youths are addicted to smoking every year. 55,000 youths are becoming smokers everyday. 32 % below 18 years consume Alcohol, cannabis, and Heroin.

Influence of Media and Gadgets: India will be the second largest user of smart phones in the world. Children are becoming addicted to these gadgets cocooning themselves into a world of their own, ending up in serious problems.

The challenges India’s youth face in the second decade of the 21st century are manifold. Looking at this scenario, we the Christians have to realize our role in reaching out to the youth. We need to catch them before they fall into Satan’s trap. Hence let us mobilize sincere prayer teams, sacrifice our time to do our best for the youth of our land and in particular the youth of our churches.

May the Lord help us all in reaching out to these important segment of society.- Mr. Jenny Christopher, Secretary for youth ministries, IEM

Whatever done for

the Lord will last…”

‘Soon be past…’

A pessimistic view?

This life may appear

to be too short a bubble on the surface

of water - a flower of the grass…. BUT it

has great potential. It is here that one has

to decide for eternity - invest in eternity -

riches in heaven.

Yes, your creator created you with a

glorious plan and purpose for your life.

There will be a day of reckoning when

you have run the race. On that day,

while eternity stands before you, what

will you see while looking back at your

life? The wise Solomon declares,

“Remember your creator….” before it is

too late and you cannot do anything

about the way you have spent your life.

There is no second chance!

The Lord Jesus gives us a call “Lift up

your eyes and look on the fields, that

they are white for harvest” Jn:4:35. “Lift

up” involves catching the vision not just

seeing, looking or observing; but

diligently studying and catching the

vision, without which, we will not see the

fields “white unto harvest” The truth is,

many a time, we do not even see the

fields! We go on with our eyes fixed on

earthly things (legitimate - may be) and

miss out the vision. Once a man was

walking through a crowd in a city. His

swine followed him. It never missed him

nor got lost in the rush. Few wondered

and asked the man, how come this swine

Where are they? They are unseen the ones whose hearts the Holy Spirit has

prepared. They are ready waiting for someone to go to them and share the Truth. The

Holy Spirit is grieved and longing to see someone sharing the Gospel with these.

Already ripe white unto harvest! The Time is short! If not harvested on time now

they will perish for eternity. How will you enter into the joy of the bridegroom and

feast with Him while you still hear their cry, “Open unto us… open unto us!” But, if you

obey and lift up your eyes, you will catch the vision of the perishing you will

spontaneously cry out as Isaiah did “Here am I; send me” - not for a job a profession

thrill of furlough overseas experience but for a passion; for the love of the One who

has called you! He has set an example before you. He forsook all and gave Himself up.

Phil:2:6-8. “was rejected and despised” His call goes: “Wanted wicks to burn for God;

oil and fire supplied” “Faithful is He who calls you, who will also do it”. Will you trust

His word and obey? He desires that you let Him have you.

What will you do with your life? What joy will you have while you look back in your

declining age? “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own

soul?” (Mt:16:26) Will it be a song of “wasted years”? or something to deserve “Well

done my good and faithful servant”?

Will you now offer yourself on the altar to obey? Small loaves of bread and few fish

- but it brought blessings to thousands; spiritually too it is the same. When you stand

before Him on that day, you could also say, “Here I am and the children whom you

gave me…” and present so many spiritual children with great surprise even over the

number and give all glory to Him.

Do not fix your eyes on the earthly things like the swine, but lift up your eyes and

catch the vision of the fields white unto harvest beckoning you to come and harvest

and bring in the sheaves. Only one life it will soon be past what you have done in

obedience to His call only will last.

(Mr. Cyril Kunder is an eminent Bible teacher and preacher and was previously

associated with Ambassadors for Christ. He is based in Bangalore.)

is following you without any problem? He pointed to a bag on his shoulder filled with

boiled beans. As the man dropped the beans one by one, the swine with its eyes fixed

on the earth and on the beans that dropped which satisfied its desire, followed his

footsteps. But, alas, it never lifted up its head to see that there is a beautiful sky with

moon and stars! It spent its lifetime seeking beans on the ground!

The Creator calls on you now to “Lift up your eyes”! Only then you will “Catch the

vision.”

“Where there is no vision, people perish” Pro:20:18. Both you and others! When

you catch the vision, passion follows. Gripped by this passion for perishing souls,

many have given themselves up for the task. They were considered fools in the eyes of

earthly wise people. When Dr. Livingstone completed his medical studies, one of his

friends asked him what he would be doing. He replied saying that the passion for

perishing souls in Africa is burning him within and he has offered his life for that task.

His friends scoffed at him and called him a “fool” for throwing away his brilliant skills

to the jungles of that dark continent. After many years, when David died in Africa, the

natives would not let his body be taken back to England for they said, he belonged to

them. So a compromise was worked out. His heart was removed and buried in Africa.

His body was brought to England and was given a high profile funeral with great

honour and royal presence. When all was over, in the twilight, a man was rolling on

the mud of his grave moaning, “Yes, he was right, I was wrong; I was a fool…” Who

was this man? The same friend who taunted David for his commitment to Africa then

and entered into a medical profession in England, got name and fame, got riches got

many fiends enjoyed parities and at the end became addicted to alcohol and lost

everything and now had become a junkie and a fool!

Even to-day, many young men forsake their high education and degrees, feel the

call to serve the Lord in different ways, go out and sacrifice their lives. Many call them

fools. Jesus said, “For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses

his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it” Lk:9:24. The Lord's great

commission to “go… preach.. Teach.. make disciples…” (Mt:28:19) applies to all even

you. Some consider that it is not relevant now. But it is relevant till there are people

who have not yet heard the gospel.

Why are we so indifferent to these things? Because we do not have the vision for

we have not been “lifting up our eyes” We have our earthly quests, ambitions, goals,

riches, possessions, pleasure, name and fame, positions, children's future etc., - all

legitimate. Our eyes see only corruption, injustice, iniquity abounding lustful acts,

hatred, murder, rape, people against people - negatives only. In the midst of these

comes the clarion call to lift up our eyes; only then we will catch the vision of the fields

white unto harvest ready and waiting to be harvested. Who will go? The fresh batch of 25 trainees from 11 states are heading towards different mission fields for their exposure in cultural adaptation, Language learning and team work. We covet your prayers for these dear ones, they on the 1st of September for 3 months.

(Mr. G.S.P. Dhas is a Father figure to many a youth who have been influenced by him. Here he shares his heart with us). Tell us how did it all start?

In August, 1963, while at Tambaram in Chennai, the Lord graciously confronted and converted me. Right at the beginning, I developed a special burden / concern for North India, a region least exposed to the gospel with the least number of witnesses, and I committed myself for this vast region- “to pray, to give and to go,” After my retirement I am based in Odisha. When did you catch a vision to minister to the youth in particular?

Ever since my conversion I developed a passion for soul - winning. Mission & evangelism gripped my heart. After my conversion, the first posting was Odisha. Here I came in contact with a college lecturer, who was pioneering the student - ministry of the UESI and I was introduced to it in the mid- sixties. The ministry of UESI became my priority with greater involvement with the youth----- college students in particular. I also developed a love for ALL evangelical mission- agencies, which served the same kingdom-cause, using different methodologies and covering different fields / sections of the society. What are the challenges of ministering to the youth of today?

Today’s students will be tomorrow's leaders of the church & society. By and large, they are a neglected lot. We must discern and respond to individual needs---- physical, intellectual, spiritual, material etc. We must not judge them by their external behaviour / appearance. How can Christian youth influence our Nation?

There is the need for full-time disciples to penetrate every stratum of the society--- in Govt. & Pvt. Services as teachers, doctors, nurses, clerks, engineers, technicians etc and in mission-related services as pastors, preachers, evangelists etc to be effective witnesses for Christ ‘by lip & life’. Each believer is to be sensitive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in choosing & settling for a secular or an ecclesiastical role in this world. We’ve heard that you have mentored many a young person and many you mentored are in Missions today. What are the general guidelines in Mentoring?

In order to be effective mentors, we must be person-oriented, good in interpersonal relationships, culturally-neutral----unbiased, impartial, non-judgemental & trustworthy. We must have a shepherd's heart---loving & willing to make time for others. We must be patient, with a long term view. God uses many means and men to shape the life of a person as a disciple of Christ. Without His input, even the combined labour of many mentors will be unfruitful. We can be thankful that we are co-labourers (co-mentors), God remaining the Master Mentor. Mentoring can go on mutually between different levels of people. Mentoring is every believer's calling, privilege and duty. ‘Absence of Mentoring is the same as lack of follow-up’. May God enable more of us, rather all of us, to be good mentors!

(It is through Uncle Dhas’s ministry, many missionaries from Odisha joined IEM. We are grateful to God for providing such models.)

Praise:We could screen Jesus film to one contact.

oday's youth have

more choices in life Tthan any other

generation that lived on

this planet be it a choice

relating to career or

choosing a smartphone or even Christian

music. But sadly, having been fed on a feel-

good concoction of wealth-health-

prosperity-and-success from the pulpit,

'missions' does not figure among their

choices. Ask any missionary organization, leave alone IEM, if young people are

stepping out in increasing numbers for missions be it as goers or givers or pray-ers.

The answer is No! Are we losing them to the world and the crowns that it has to offer?

It is better instead to lose them for the cause of Christ. (Remember, the one who loses

for His sake, will be the one who will gain!)

Let us look at a few young people in the Bible who had His mission on their minds.

Mary (yes, the mother Mary) was a young girl when it all happened. Her dream

would be to marry that godly man Joseph and 'settle' in life. I bet, home-making was

high on her agenda. Of course, she could have the best wooden furniture in town.

Little did she realize that her prayer would change from 'may it be to me as I wish' (isn't

that the typical Christmas wish?) to 'may it be to me as you have said'. It happened

when His mission was on her mind. Read the Magnificat all over again. This girl seems

to know what God has promised to do in history and she wants to be a part of it.

Esther was another young girl who took up His mission on her mind. Having just

won a beauty pageant, success (I mean, worldly success) was knocking at her

doorstep. Had it been today, Bollywood would make a beeline at her palace. Esther

had a choice to make to be selfish or be unselfish, to use God or to be used by God,

cherish the marriage with the King or prepare to die for the mission of the Other King!

She was a smart girl and she chose His mission.

Timothy was a young believer. Mom (Eunice) and Grandma (Lois) were also his

Bible teachers. A godly young man, adept at handling diversity (thanks to his parents'

cross-cultural marriage!), showing signs of leadership whose mind was hooked on to

His mission. The rest is history. Now Paul could die in peace knowing the baton is

passed on to safe hands. I wonder what Eunice and Lois spoke to the young Timothy.

Coaching centers? Competitive exams? Career options? Financial security? Social

security? Or, did they tell him about one Paul? About the perishing souls in faraway

lands? About the thrill of cross-cultural adventures? About the mission that Christ had

left behind for us to fulfill?

Here are some modern missions heroes. C. T. Studd played for England in the

original Ashes series in 1882 at the age of 22. Given his cricketing skills, cricketing glory

was beckoning. But three years later, he was on a ship to China. This young mind was

captivated by His mission. He wrote this … 'Some want to live within the sound of

church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell'. He also wrote:

Only one life 'twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last.

Remember Jim Elliott (yes, the one who wrote 'He is no fool who gives what he

cannot keep in order to gain what he cannot lost')? He was 31 when he left everything

to go for the Quechua and Auca tribes in the Ecuador. Well, his wasn't a long life, but a

and light. It is good when a grain of wheat dies!

The classic movie Chariots of fire (1981) tells the fact-based story of Eric Liddell, a

gold medal winner in the 1924 Olympics at Paris. But Eric soon puts the gold medal in

its place and sails for China as a missionary. When God's mission is on young minds,

they sense a greater purpose and a reason to live (and even die).

Here is a 7-point agenda to help put His mission in young minds.

1. If your child likes books, buy a super-duper missionary biography thriller for

him / her. If your child likes picture books, I strongly recommend 'Window on

the world: When we pray God works' by Daphne Spragget and Jill Johnstone.

Let them read.

2. Get some fridge magnets to fix missionary family pics & their latest prayer card

on your refrigerator. Talk to your kids about those heroes in the picture. Let

them hear.

3. Host missionaries in your home during their furlough. Let them share their

stories (both joys and pains included) in the living room chat while your young

ones are around. Let them listen.

4. Make sure your family prayers are not mere 'give-me-this or give-me-that'

whispers. Educate your children on the privilege of praying for missions and

missionaries. Let them pray.

5. Let the next Sunday school or youth group skit be on 'Operation Auca' or 'Burnt

alive: The Staines and the God They Loved'. Let them feel.

6. Use your next LTC (Leave Travel Concession) to visit the farthest mission field

from your place. Let them see, smell, taste and touch.

7. Watch the world news together as a family for at least 20min/day. Let them

know what is happening between Israel and Palestine. Let them know why

Christians in Mosul, Iraq are leaving. Hang a world map on the wall and have a

geography quiz for the family. Take a marker and draw 10x40 window and tell

the young ones that the harvest is plenty. Let them know.

It's time to prayerfully and intentionally put His mission in young minds! Let them obey

and let them go! The harvest is plenty, the workers are few. Younger the better!

During winter, the temperature drops down minus 10-20degree celsius. Four months in a year, we are cut off due to heavy snowfall and avalanches. This is the valley to which the Lord has taken me to see a worship group established for Him. I am zealous to preach about my Saviour to the people who are dying without Christ because He saved me from the clutches of sin. Matthew 28.19,20 beckons me to plant His church in this unreached remote area. I praise God for my devout parents who brought me up in God's ways and who committed me for this very task when I was a child. Pray for me that God would establish the work of my hands.

Peter Punii Ngade, Himachal Pradesh

I was born in a Meitie family in Manipur. In addition to my parents following the Hindu rituals and traditions ardently, my mother was possessed and tortured by evil spirits. Quarrels between my parents ripped our home apart. Untold misery fell upon us when we had to sell all our belongings after my father's death. Since, my parents could not properly guide me in my childhood, I indulged in evil ways. I was known as a notorious and hopeless boy in my village. But God…He cast His eyes on

me. He brought me into His fold using Bro.Luke singh. My family deemed it good to chase me from home after hearing about my conversion. But the Lord…He undertook for my needs and sent me to a Bible school where I grew in the Lord. Formerly, I disliked Christian faith for I thought it was a foreign religion. But now, revelling in the Lord's nurture, I cried back, “Lord what can I do for you?” The Lord gave me a life partner Aguinao and gave us a desire to work for Him cross-culturally. He also led us to IEM through Bros. Thiek and Sholal and has put a burden within us to give His living Word to the Bhojpuri speaking people in Bihar. People have responded to the Gospel. We have been enabled to translate Mark and Luke into Bhojpuri.

Joychandra Singh, Bihar

I was raised in a Christian family. But I did not know God till I attended a Gospel meeting. The verse "I chose you" from Jeremiah 5 drew me to the Lord. I had lost my mother in my childhood but the Lord has sustained me thus far amidst difficult situations. My father came to the Lord later in life. I came to know about IEM, when they conducted meetings in Kharagpur. I also attended the youth co-ordinator's seminar in Ahmedabad and from then on, I not only

witness among young people but also help IEM in conducting youth meetings in Kharagapur. Besides I am actively involved in the Sunday school ministries that the Lord urged me to undertake. Pray for me that I may be more used for God's Work.

William Daniel, Kharagpur

I was brought up in a Christian family. After receiving Christ as my personal Saviour in my life, I faced a lot of hardships in my life. The Lord sustained me through it all and

Arrows in the Lord's quiver. Testimonies

I came to know the Lord at the age of 17 and committed for full time service for the Lord when I heard the life of missionary Ziegenbalg in a VBS. During college, my pastor helped me grow in the Lord and once sent me to an IEM youth meeting in Coimbatore. There the Lord directed me to give myself to the task of reaching the unreached people groups. Subsequently, I joined IEM in 2010 and am presently serving among the Kuvi speaking

Kondhs of Odisha. The role of literacy in the making of a mature church is the need of the hour. Pray for the literacy work among the thriving Kondh churches and ministry among the Dongria Kondhs. Prabath. G, Odisha

Hi, friends!! India is what it is today thanks to scores of young lives poured out for the sake of the Gospel. And the legacy goes on … Would you join the band of these brave young men to spread His Word?

Field News

Balrampur (Uttar Pradesh): We could organize medical camps in 2 villages in our ministerial area. Doctors from Operation Blessing India and Prem seva Hospital came and treated the patients. More than 365 people were benefitted. Eye, Dental, General patients were treated. This medical camp will be a great opening in Bajarmunda Babani and surrounding 6 villages. Please continue to pray for these villages as we are going to meet these camp patients in their homes in coming days.

Raxaul (Bihar): By God's grace we could complete the 1st level teaching programme for 10 believers in two villages in July 10-20 and 16-26, 2014. Though people

had been so busy in planting paddy in their field, and amidst rain, they were able to give time on every evening to learn God's Word. They learnt new things about Creation, Angels, Heaven, Hell, Satan, Creation of man and fall of man, Redemption, Faith, Prayer, Fasting, Discipleship and Evangelism. Believers are very much encouraged by the teaching. Our native workers and missionaries took active role in teaching. Now they are empowered and

equipped to share the Gospel with others through this teaching programme. Glory to Jesus alone!

Ho (Odisha): Mr. Jadumani Soren was a bank manager in UCO bank who lost his job. He faced a lot of problems in his family as his sons became sick. He realised that his own people were doing black magic on him and had cast a spell. He remembered his father's (who was no more,) words to go to 'Christianity' to get protection from all evil. On 10th July, 2014 he approached us and with tears rolling down his face shared this story and asked us if Jesus can save him and his family from the attack of evil spirit? We shared the love of God and gospel. On our advice he removed all the fetishes he had on his hand and we led him in prayer. He brought the whole family the next time and said that they too will follow the Lord. Pray for Abheejit his son to be completely healed from fits. Pray for the whole family to grow in faith in Jesus Christ.

Batra (Chattisgarh) : Ramdev's wife, from Bongulaguda village, My husband Ramdev is a village poojari. He was not able to walk for last two weeks. and my daughter Vimala was possessed often by spirits and went out of home even in the night. We did all rituals, but there was no deliverance for both my husband and my daughter. Then we came to know about the prayer meeting going on in Chokanar village. Then we called the pastors to come and pray. After a week, my husband is alright, and is going to work in the field. My daughter is delivered from those disturbances.

During the last three month time, God enabled us to see totally 130 people confessing their faith publically in water Baptism. Behind this every soul there is a story of God's faithfulness. We Praise God for the missionaries who laboured for the same.

has given the ministry KHARAGPUR ANUGRAHA MINISTRY in my hands. Through this, I have a school and work among the Muslims. I also have a children's ministry in a village. I thank God for giving me an opportunity to work with IEM. It has given me wide doors to work among the youth. I got to learn a lot during the training of youth coordinators in AHMEDABAD (GUJRAT). And some of those teachings I implement in my work too. Pray for me that I may work for the Lord with all my soul, mind and strength and fulfill the purpose for which God has chosen me on this earth. Alok Arik, Kharagpur

Youth Coordinator turned Area SecretaryI am Nagaraju (Nehemiah). My parents are daily labourers. My parents worshiped

many gods and goddesses. When possessed by these goddesses, my mother engaged in fortune telling. My father, mother and brothers were addicted to liquor that people brought in return. At 12, I learnt to booze, smoke tobacco, tell lies and used filthy language. At 20 years, I got involved in politics and canvassed for political leaders for money. I also got involved in partying and my life became very wretched.Though I was prompted by fundamental outfits that Christian faith was an American religion, I went to the happy evening programme conducted in Khammam in 1998. There I realized what I was doing was wrong. Later, in a Youth Camp held at Nellore in 1999, I accepted Jesus as my personal Saviour. I was nurtured spiritually through the Bible Studies taken by Bro. Jenny Christopher. The Happy evening programmes challenged me for missionary work. The EDGE programmes taught me discipleship. I was appointed as a youth co-ordinator in the YLTP at Warangal. Rev. John Douglas asked me if I would be an area secretary for IEM. I readily accepted the offer. Recently I participated in the ASCENT programme near Bangalore. I was deeply challenged for the ministry there. I am happy that God has chosen me to be His vessel to bring honour and glory to Him.

Nehemiah, Khammam

I am H.S. Caleb from Warangal, Telangana. I was born in a Christian family and led a very nominal life, I was active in Sunday school, youth fellowships, camps and retreats, I thought that being active in all these activities will take me to heaven. I was invited to a discipleship programme organised by the Indian Evangelical Mission. I came there very reluctantly and in fact went to a movie during the programme, but God's grace caught me that very day, and I was led to the Lord by IEM

missionary Bro. Nehemiah. It was a day that my life changed for ever. I decided to live for the Lord. Subsequently I got training in the IEM Head Quarters. I along with my friends organised EDGE and YLTP programmes. We could also organise Tim camp in Warangal and 22 youth committed their lives to the Lord. Presently we are gathering thrice a week for prayer, fellowship and Bible study. Pray for me as I have committed to go into full time ministry.

ISAAC JESUDASON ( 18.8.1934 -24.7.2014)Dear Annan Isaac Jesudasan was born in Tamilnadu. He was a well

placed executive in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation before he and his wife resigned their jobs to join the IEM family as full time missionaries. He was a very good Bible teacher, known for dividing the Word rightly, never diluting the Word for profit or popularity. He was a powerful orator both in English and Tamil and used his skills to promote the cause of missions, wherever he went. He is the one who initiated the recording of Rev. Theodore William's messages in cassette tapes. The Lord used his engineering expertise as well in raising buildings in the Outreach Training Institute. No one can erase his contribution to IEM or forget all that the Lord enabled him to do for the betterment of IEM in the late 80s and early 90s. With praise to God we record the tributes of a few, who served in the IEM leadership alongside Bro. Jesudason.

“I thank the Lord for giving me an opportunity to work along with late Brother Isaac Jesudasan. We as a family were blessed by his deep love for God and for the Word of God. He was a man with compassion and humility who was sold out for God's mission. Though we miss him, we know for sure that He has accomplished God's purposes in and through his life”. Gladson Anchan & Ranja, former Admin sec, IEM

“My beloved Isaac annan was a simple, jovial servant leader whom I had come to know and appreciate. He had broad shoulders where people could lean on to be strengthened, encouraged, comforted and edified. His house was always an open house for His people. I am thankful to God for bringing him in my l ife”.

Victor & Joy Sitther, former GS, IEM

In 1972, after hearing Bro. Isaac translate my messages into Tamil in Neyveli township and enjoying the hospitality of the Jesudasons, I urged Bro. Isaac to become an area secretary for IEM. A few days later, he gladly accepted the responsibility. He was a hard worker and the most productive area secretary of that period. After joining full time in IEM, he travelled all over the country and mobilized support for IEM. I miss this great brother and co-worker in the Lord.”

P.S. Thomas & Mariamma, former Asso. GS, IEMLate Mr. Isaac Jesudasan, a civil engineer, because of his commitment to the Lord and

his mission, left his senior position in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Tamilnadu and joined IEM. He served as Central Secretary for Church Ministries for many years and later constructed the initial buildings of dining hall and accommodation blocks in the OTI. We praise God and remember with gratitude his wholehearted dedication to the Lord, his selfless service with IEM and the simple life style that he and his family lived.

- Theodore and Diana Srinivasagam, former GS, IEM & General Secretary, IMA

The IEM offers its heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Lily Jesudason and to daughter Mrs. Vimala, son Mr. Vijayakumar and their families.

All the way His Saviour led himTribute

In the month of May we had a programme called ASCENT to Appreciate, Honor, Motivate And Empower our honorary servants of God called Area Secretaries. All the participants had decided to identify at least 5 new IEM Area Secretaries, form 5 new prayer cells and one Vision Building Team(VBT). VBT is a team committed to promote the cause of mission by taking the local responsibility without the help of any missionaries. Here is an impact of Ascent

At Khammam in Teluganna State (old Andhra Pradesh) three VBTs were formed. In the past two months 11 area secretaries were appointed in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. A team of Area Secretaries stared to reach new places every week end at Nazareth, Tamil Nadu. A new missionary support was raised and a missionary was dedicated at KGF, Karnataka. One of our area Secretaries from Bacheli in Chhattisgarh motivated her husband for missionary support. A special effort was taken to bring all the Area Secretaries in Kerala to rekindle their ministry. An Area Secretary from Ahmednagar, Maharashtra expressed his desire to become Mission Coordinator to develop the ministry in a region. North East States planned to have Area Secretaries conference next year. One area Secretary motivated his church in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh to actively involve in missions and as a result missionary support has increased.

We praise God for the impact. It is our prayer that all will be motivated to make a difference in their efforts.

Thomas Coke was the son of an affluent pharmacist. Coke, a man of short stature, attended Oxford University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in arts and a doctorate in civil law. He came to know the Lord personally after reading many religious books. He held the post of a Mayor in Brecon of South Wales for a time and then became an ordained Anglican clergy in obedience to the call of God for full time ministry. It was during this time that he got acquainted with the Methodist founder John Wesley. After meeting Wesley, however, he was dismissed from being a clergy for conducting the open-air and cottage services Wesley recommended.

Soon, he became active with the Methodist ministries. He was the first Methodist Bishop to be ordained and His pamphlet '... on the Support of Missionaries' was the first Methodist missionary tract. Coke was named to head the first Methodist missionary committee. He led pioneer missionaries to most islands in the West Indies, in Sierra Leone, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and France. Wherever he went, he organized Methodist societies, strengthened believers and encouraged missionary activity. He personally funded most of the missionary activities from his family's wealth and in his own words, “I beg from door to door unashamedly for the cause of missionary support”. At the age of 58, he married Penelope Smith who was from an aristocrat family. She shared his evangelistic fervor and liquidated her estate to support missionaries. He often preached missionary sermons from the text “Ethiopia will quickly stretch out her hands to God” (Psalms 68.31) and urged the Methodists towards missionary enterprise.

He was a voracious reader and a prolific writer. He read widely to keep himself abreast of his surroundings and wrote commentaries, historical accounts, several volumes of sermons and letters against slavery. John Wesley found in Coke a valued legal mind, a gifted evangelical preacher, a skilled administrator, and in later years, his most trusted companion. Wesley spoke affectionately of Thomas Coke as a flea, for it seemed the man "hopped" relentlessly in the service of the Gospel. His evangelistic exertions earned him the title, “Father Of Methodist Missions”.

Missions to India was in his mind from first to last. Once when a friend offered him a pamphlet of a different kind to read, he said, ' Brother,' I beg your pardon, I am dead to all things but Asia !” “Though other countries offer me an extensive field for usefulness, yet I could give up all for India. Could I but close my life in being the means of raising a spiritual Church in India, it would satisfy the utmost ambition of my soul here below.” His prayers never went unanswered!

In the year 1814, he breathed his last in the Indian ocean enroute to India for concentrated work in Sri Lanka and India. Though Dr. Coke never ventured into the land he loved, he became a forerunner of the many Methodist activities that India enjoys!
