No Ladies’ Day On

Thursday September 24th ! !

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!

Three important items our club members need

to consider.

1. Are you qualified to play in the Club

Championship on October 10th

& 11th

?

2. Remember that next month is member-

ship renewal time.

3. And most important after 12-15 years

several of the Board members are

thinking of retiring. Please let one of us

know if you are willing to become a

Board member – will we will assist!

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Having struck his tee shot in the direction of some trees bordering a water hazard, a competitor briefly searches for his ball in the hazard but does not find it. Without

knowledge or virtual certainty that his ball lies in the hazard, he drops a ball behind the hazard (about 55-yards forward of the teeing ground) according to the water hazard Rule and plays it. His original ball is then found inside the hazard within five minutes of beginning search. What is the ruling? A. There is no penalty; the original ball remains the ball in play

B. There is a penalty of one stroke according to the lost ball Rule and an additional penalty of two strokes for a breach of that Rule; the original ball is lost and the ball dropped under the water hazard Rule is in play

C. There is a penalty of one stroke according to the lost ball Rule and an additional penalty of two strokes for serious breach of that Rule; he must abandon both balls previously played, return to the teeing ground and put a ball in play

Answer is on the calendar page.

It’s Just Funny

Casual Air

"Casual air" Is wind of a volume or

velocity sufficient to cause (a) a pinch

of grass blades released at shoulder height to be blown a distance of at

least two club lengths in any

direction; or (b) the fabric bunting

attached to the flagstick on any green to be drawn taut, or to ruffle, flap, or

flutter, or the flagsticks themselves to

bend, sway, or wobble; or (c)

improperly affixed headgear to become airborne. Whenever casual air

is deemed to exist, players may

obtain relief as follows:

1. The ball may be teed up anywhere

within the closely mown area of the

teeing ground without regard to the

position of the tee markers.

2. Any ball hit out-of-bounds may be

retrieved and replayed from the

nearest playable lie within bounds,

without penalty of either stroke or

distance.

3. Any ball that flies unexpectedly far over a green, or falls conspicuously

short of it, may be replayed once

without assessing a stroke.

4. All third putts are conceded.

5. A range ball may be put into play

at any time at a player's discretion.

I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone's golf game: it's called an eraser.

Golf is a fascinating game. It has taken me nearly forty years to discover that I can't play it.

Butch Harmon Tips

This little shot drives amateurs

mad: 30 yards, over a bunker,

can’t be short, can’t be long.

Basically, you have to step up

and hit a good shot, or you’re

looking at a big number. Given

the memories of similar shots

you probably have rattling

around in your brain, it’s good to

have a plan. For starters, take

your most lofted wedge, play the ball about middle in your stance, and set a little more weight on

your front foot. Then make about a half backswing, letting your wrists hinge but keeping your

weight on that front foot. From there, hit down and through the ball, accelerating to the finish.

Remember, the big thing is to get over the bunker. Don’t baby it. If you pressed me for one key to

hitting this shot, I’d say, “Commit to the hit.” I see amateurs quitting at impact, afraid they’re going

to launch the ball over the green, so they dump it right in the sand. Try to create a smooth tempo

back and through, with a positive strike at impact.

BUTCH’S BASICS

The most common fault I see on wedge shots is swinging off the back foot, trying to help the ball up.

Here’s a cue to get your weight moving forward: As you start down, kick your back knee toward

the target. This will shift your weight left and get your body turning through. You’ll learn you can

hit down and still produce plenty of loft.
