September 2017
A gentle spirit through Christ
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and
dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."
Colossians 3:12 (TNIV).
What does it mean to dress ourselves daily with
gentleness? In the context of this passage and other
places in the scriptures, the Lord expects us to have
Christ-like consideration for others. It is hard to define,
yet we know gentleness when we see it and experience it
from others.
In Philippians 4:5 Paul encourages us to "Let our gentleness be evident to
all" (TNIV). Eugene Peterson translates this verse this way: "Make it as clear as you
can to all you meet that you're on their side, working with them and not against
them" (THE MESSAGE).
We can possess a gentle spirit because we belong to Christ and receive his strength
and are recipients of His love. We live in a culture where our witness as followers of
Jesus changes lives as we daily clothe our lives with a gentle, Christ-like kindness
toward others.
Thank you, my church family, for your love, forbearance and consideration of
others. You truly represent the Kingdom of God on earth! Lives are being changed
as we live into the bright future God has in store for us!
With Christian love, joy, and gratitude,
Andi

Small group book studies
I give thanks to God daily for the Christlike conversations we have had discussing
"Unafraid and Unashamed", by Wil Cantrel. We still have three chapters to discuss. After this
book study, you are invited to participate in our next Wednesday evening small group entitled,
"Unity of the Church and Human Sexuality".
This book is published by the General Board of Higher Education of the UMC and is divided
into four chapters with discussion questions included.
Session One: The Conversation Matters
Session Two: Loving God with Our Mind Matters
Session Three: The United Methodist Church Matters
Session Four: Finding a Way Forward Matters
Please stay tuned to the bulletin and website for the date when
this study will begin.
The cost of the book is $10. Please let Andi know if you would
like a copy or contact the church office. If you would be willing
to participate in a small group other than Wednesday, please
contact Andi at :[email protected].
You are invited to participate in our upcoming fall
church wide study entitled, “Earn. Save. Give.", by James
Harnish. The cost of the book is $8.
This four week curriculum will help us have a clearer
understanding of John Wesley's teachings on money and our
daily relationship with faith and money.
A DVD lesson will be offered on Sunday mornings
during Sunday School.
We will begin this study on October 29.
Questions: please contact Andi at [email protected].

Walk to Feed the Hungry in Lee County
DATE: Saturday, November 4
TIME: 9:00 a.m.
PLACE: First Presbyterian Church, 203 Hawkins Avenue in Sanford.
ORGANIZED BY: Sanford Civitan Club,
We are in need of people with sponsors to walk a 5 mile walk for
hunger! If you can’t walk 5 miles, walk what you can. The more
walkers we have, the more money we can raise for the hungry.
For the past two years the Sanford Civitan Club has been instrumental in organizing the Lee
County Hunger Walk, The walker sponsorship funds collected are divided equally between the eight organizations listed
below unless designated by the sponsor to be given to a specific organization. The organizations receiving funds are: The
Breadbasket, Haven, CUOC, Meals on Wheels, Family Promise, Back Pack Program, and Outreach Missions
(homeless shelters).
A sponsor can designate any or all of their donation to a specific organization or have their donation split any way they
choose. No funds are retained by the club for any purpose including administrative costs. These are covered by the club
itself.
The 5 mile walk starts and ends at First Presbyterian church and starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. In
the event of inclement weather the walk will be held at the indoor walking tract at First Pres.
Youth are not only welcome, but are encouraged to participate. There is no minimum age
requirement.
If you have any questions, or to receive a folder for donations, please contact Brad Butler at 919-498-5068 or by email at
Thank you for your support of this community project.

inside the box. A personal note, letter or a picture of our church or yourself is also encouraged.
Also requested is $5.00 to help pay postage.

Generosity in all places
I had the privilege of attending an evening of "Summer Fest" hosted by El Refugio, the week of July 17-22.
The photo shows youth in our community attending a karate class. There were also several folks in the kitchen learning how to
prepare empanadas by our talented chef Maria Guevara.
I celebrate El Refugio connecting with our neighbors and JUMC serving as a gracious
host! The Kingdom of God is alive and unfolding before our eyes! Thanks be to God for
"generosity in all places!"

Learn Spanish with El Refugio
JUMC’s outreach ministry El Refugio begins its ELEVENTH
session of language classes on Monday, September 11. The adult
program includes three levels of English as a Second Language,
a Citizenship class for Spanish speakers, a class in reading and
writing for Spanish speakers, and Spanish as a Second Language
(SSL). In the meantime, students’ children receive free child
care and are involved in enrichment activities to learn about
cultures and other school topics. All but the SSL class meet on
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
The Spanish class takes place on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings, September 12 – November 16, 6-8 pm in the JUMC
Wesley Center. The classes are helped along via online learning
between sessions – and face-to-face practice with students
learning English. It’s a great way to keep your mind sharp, learn
to communicate around the community, broaden your
perspectives and build cross-cultural relationships.
To get started: simply show up on Tuesday, September 12, at
6:00 pm! If you’d like to know what it’s like, speak with JUMC
members who’ve recently been in the class: Debra Groce, Gene
Hathaway or Paul Hill.
Howdy from Wisconsin!
This summer Deb and David Taylor were able to visit Erika Martínez Flores at
her church and parsonage in Wisconsin. (Jorge was busy at his church, so we missed
him, but saw Winky the dog and Rosita the cat—all doing well!)
Erika is pastor at Bethel UMC in Elkhorn, WI (pictured) and Richmond UMC. These
churches are part of the Whitewater Area Regional Ministry, so Erika also is involved
with ministries at three other area
churches. Jorge is pastor at New Horizon
UMC in Orfordville, WI. Erika and
Jorge both send their best to the JUMC
family!

JUMC Grounds
On Saturday, October 7, JUMC’s
outreach ministry El Refugio presents the
fourth annual Festival Latino to celebrate our
Hispanic/Latino neighbors and share the love of
Christ. This cross-cultural festival is a great
opportunity for JUMC to reach out and engage
with our community.
Come enjoy dance and music on stage, explore
Hispanic/Latino cultures, learn about El
Refugio/The Refuge and get to know our
JUMC neighbors through a fun day with music,
dance, children’s crafts, games, door prizes,
FOOD and more! National Hispanic/Latino
Heritage Month is celebrated each mid-
September to mid-October, and El Refugio’s
festival ties in with that observance.
El Refugio’s language students are taking the
lead with this year’s festival. Student teams will
set up tables dealing with various aspects of
Latino cultures, like music, art, literature,
dance, clothing, games, foods and more. Kids
in the El Refugio child enrichment program
will share their projects and talents, too.
RADICAL HOSPITALITY IS OUR GOAL!
Sign up for an hour-long shift to greet visitors (yes, in English is fine!), provide information, help park cars, hand out door
prize tickets, staff the volunteer lounge, and more.
BE THERE!
If you can’t commit to help—come anyway! Bring your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers ...even complete strangers to
experience this awesome event!
Watch the bulletin and emails for more details on how you can be involved to serve Christ and show His love to our neighbors.

Community Summer Fest a Smash Hit!
The week of July 24-29, community members enjoyed a full week of workshops, activities, hands-on lessons and FUN
at Jonesboro UMC. El Refugio’s second annual Community Summer Fest brought together dozens of adults and kids to learn,
laugh and build cross-cultural community. At least 165 folks signed in for the various sessions…some who attended just one
session, some who attended several. There were nine workshops for adults/youth and ten activity sessions for kids.
SPECIAL THANKS to El Refugio summer intern Jocabed Aragón, Executive Director Oscar Hernandez, Administrative
Assistant Alex Giraldo and the many instructors, volunteers, interpreters and participants who made this year’s event such a

Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.
Refrain:
Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry,
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.
Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief;
Kneeling there in deep contrition,
Help my unbelief.
Refrain:
Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.
Refrain:
Thou the spring of all my comfort,
More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee,
Whom in Heav’n but Thee.
Refrain:
Fanny Crosby 1868
Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior
Story behind the hymn.
Hers was an age of evangelistic singing missions, and Fanny Crosby’s hymns were always in request. So
popular was the little poetess that she was invited to speak at many places where these missions were held. On one
occasion, it was at a state prison. Much was hoped for from this particular meeting. As Fanny was speaking—and
her very blindness gave her power—first one prisoner and then another would interrupt by calling on the good
Lord not to pass me by.
Fanny told that she was so touched by the pleas of these men that she could not get the thought of them out of her
mind; indeed she said, I wrote the lines with the men’s pleading wail still in my ears.
