Melbourne Cup Day sits at the pinnacle of the Australian racing calendar and puts the country firmly in the international sporting spotlight.
Most Australians stop and

Bribie RSL Club enthusiastically joins in the
festivities on Tuesday, November 5 with a duo of fantastic functions.
The Pavillion Party in social will be hosted in social by Mike Goldman with a host of activities including a Fashion On The Field with a $200 first prize and a picnic banquet.
The $85 ticket also includes a four-hour drink package and a performance by Andrea Kirwin.

There he won the hearts of Australia when he placed second runner-up and became one of the nation’s most notable television and media personalities.
Already a world-class magician who has performed at some of the biggest venues in Australia and Las Vegas, Apollo is also a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who has had a lifelong passion for music.
Bringing with him a one-of-a-kind show to Bribie RSL Club on Saturday, November 2, Apollo carries with him the charisma, humour and vibrancy that he oozed through TV.
Dubbed as Australia’s answer to English magician Dynamo, Apollo Jackson is Australia’s most publicised magician in history, appearing in countless TV appearances and featured in more than 200 articles in global media.
Putting his talent at mentalism to the test, Apollo wowed Australian radio listeners live on air by predicting the 2016 Melbourne Cup trifecta a week before the event.
Apollo’s close-up magic
shows, death-defying escapes and large-scale illusions entertain and enthral audiences, bringing a whole new dynamic to Australian entertainment.
Working on his own
original music and jumping back on to our television screens for 2018’s Bachelor in Paradise, Apollo cemented his place as a household name and pioneering a new level of entertainment.

INTEREST is building in next month’s wedding open day at Bribie RSL Club.Dozens of couples have expressed their
interest in attending on Sunday, October 13 as the club throws open its reception areas to show off its excellent stylings and facilities.
Club events manager Sam Thornton said three reception rooms would be decorated for the day, each catering for different sized functions and needs.
“We will have the auditorium, Garden Room and part of the Social terrace all decked out in their finery and various stylings to help give couples some ideas,” she said.
“I will be on hand from 10am to 2pm to answer all those various questions that pop up and I will be joined by some of our preferred club suppliers such as celebrant Debbie Warshawsky, Funcionz, Three Birds Photobooths and floral walls and Cakes in the Mix.
“Our club has a reputation built over two decades for holding seamless, stylish weddings and receptions.”
Sam said her department could cater for a
range of receptions from a small intimate affair to one running to 200 guests.
“Our reputation has also been enhanced by two recent events which were sell-outs and garnered glowing feedback,” she said.
“Our dinner and comedy show in June with Akmal Saleh in the auditorium drew 210 guests with a set menu and rave reviews.
“And the Taste of Queensland wine dinner last month featured four courses designed by top chef Matt Golinski and tenors as entertainment with the reaction being amazing from the 120 guests who sold out the auditorium.”
Sam said one of the event department’s biggest strengths was the quality of its team members, both wait staff and kitchen crew.
“Many of our team members have been with us for years and are totally comfortable with the requirements needed for functions,” she said.
“Apart from wedding receptions, we also encourage members and island residents to inquire holding 21sts, anniversary parties or any event at the club.”

THE Bribie Island AFL Club has received another kick-along courtesy of the Bribie RSL Club.
Boasting three junior teams and a senior side, the Bulldogs have a strong playing history over the past two decades.
Club president Damian Wolski said the 2019 season had proven successful with the senior side ending up minor premiers for successive seasons after losing only two fixtures.
“This is the second year in a row that we have had seniors after a short time away and the move has been inspirational for our up and coming juniors, who now have a goal to aim for,” Damian said.
“There also will be a major

■ CLUB marketing manager Cloe presents $500 to the Sandstone Point Community Carols co-ordinators Mike Miles, Ella Miles and Heather Dawber.
THE Bribie RSL Club once again is a gold sponsor of the Sandstone Point Community Carols on Saturday, December 14.
Carols convenor Heather Dawber said the club’s ongoing support each year as a gold sponsor was a great benefit to the community event, which will be held as usual on the second Saturday in December.
“Sandstone Point Community Carols was originally hosted by the Sandstone Point Commun-ity Association,” Heather said.
“Three years ago the Lions Club of Sandstone Point came on board to assist with running the event as a co-host. This event is now in its 12th year and is growing in popularity each year.
“The mission of the hosting organisations is to provide a free, fun and non-alcohol event for the whole community at Sandstone Point Oval.
“The event is run by the community for the community and starts at 4.30pm with plenty of free

push next season for more juniors to arrive at our club. We will have a major player drive in the off-season as we hope to have both under eight and under 14 boys as well as an under 15 girls team.
“We would sincerely like to thank the RSL Club for its continued sponsorship and support of both of our seniors and juniors.”
Damian said the senor team, under coach Matt Hartup, contained a majority of former Bulldog juniors, some of whom had played with the club since under eights.
“If we can win the major semi-final we will go straight into the grand final, which is a great achievement,” he said.
The Bulldogs will hold their presentation night at the RSL Club on Friday, October 4.
BRIBIE RSL Club will bring a special show to the island next month.
The Madonna/Mirrorball Express 80s Night on Friday, October 18 revives a past culture, an era that held its own in music history.
Mirrorball Express performs wonderfully phat, mashed, mulched and revived dance floor fillers, rebooting hits, creating moments of nostalgia, wild hysteria and a crammed dance
floor. The group chooses to be colourful and a little different, taking the best parts of songs, the hooks if you will, the
elements that really get to the heart of retro music.
They then enhanced, morphed and doctored them in a secret magical process of musical synthesis, creating music for the soul and paving the way to one powerful party train called Mirrorball Express.
Madonna was the standout
woman exploring, navigating and owning this brilliant decade.
In her day she was the world’s brightest star, smashing the charts and bringing so much light and colour to us.
Madonna is acclaimed, controversial and famous for reinventing herself both musically and visually, a true Queen of Pop and an obvious influence for many artists around the world where expressing yourself is everything.

ROBROSENLUND
ROB Rosenlund from Wickety Wak would be well remembered for his popular impersonations of Kermit the Frog and the late John Denver.
Since Wickety Wak disbanded in 1990, Rob has been a successful solo entertainer working regularly at clubs in and around Brisbane and up to the Sunshine Coast. At his shows, Rob entertains the audience with Kermit’s Rainbow Connection and a popular range of songs from the 50s through to today’s current hits.
Two humorous songs often requested are The Bricklayer Song and It’s me again Margaret.
MONEY for Nothin was formed in 2017 as a tribute to one of the world’s most popular bands from the 70’s and 80’s – Dire Straits.
The musicality and attention to detail has made this show a must see for any rock enthusiast, guitar lover or Dire Straits fan.
Fronting the band is Terry McMahon. With extensive experience in the Australian music scene, Terry recreates the famous Mark Knopfler guitar technique and vocal with an uncanny likeness.
He plays all the riffs and solos exactly as they were played originally and recreating the signature tone of those famous guitar riffs and solos has been his quest for a long time and it shows.
The band features top-class musicians, each with their own unique musical skills and experience to make this band sound just like Dire Straits.
The band performs all the big hits including Sultans of Swing, Romeo and
Juliet, Walk of Life, Lady Writer, Your Latest Trick, Tunnel of Love, Money for Nothin and many more.
Dire Straits fans will be also be delighted by the inclusion of some early songs from the first two albums that are rarely covered.
Money for Nothin is a memorable tribute experience and audiences can’t help but sing along with the memorable songs that are part of rock history.
Top quality lighting and sound production enhance the experience and the show has had excellent reviews from the clubs, pubs and private venues it has performed in.
Dire Straits sold more than 120 million albums and were an international smash hit, launching the MTV era with Money for Nothin, the first song played on MTV.
They won four Grammys and numerous other awards and were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame last year.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
THE Bribie RSL next month will present ACCA DACCA, the world’s premier AC/DC show.
ACCA DACCA is AC/DC reborn as it’s not a tribute or a cover band as it’s a full-blown show with cannons, bells, bagpipes, Bon and Brian. ACCA/DACCA take to the stage for a two-hour plus set covering from 1974 to the present day.
ACCA DACCA recently toured through Slovakia, France, Prague, Czech Republic, Lithuania and Ireland, playing to crowds of 5000 plus head-banging, sweat-drenched, raging punters. Past tours have seen ACCA DACCA travel the world including Indonesia, Ireland, England, Spain,
Israel, Germany, Finland, Netherlands and more.
2020 will be starting with a West Coast American tour starting in Texas.
The show features the standout 19-year-old prodigy Jesse Attard as Angus. ACCA/DACCA has a schoolboy playing a schoolboy as Jesse is phenomenal and is set to be one of Australia’s hottest guitarists.
What will you take home from a night with ACCA DACCA on Friday, September 13? Just the feeling, along with the memory that you’ve just witnessed AC/DC. Not only at present but the AC/DC of the Bon Scott era as well.

CENTRE OF THE COMMUNITY
BRIBIE swimmer Maddison Stibbe has set her goal of making next year’s national trials for the Tokyo Olympics.
The Bribie RSL Club has helped teenager Maddison’s cause with a $150 cheque towards her preparation.
Maddison has registered an outstanding 2019 season at both the national championships in Adelaide and the state school championships.
Among her highlights were qualifying for four events at the Australian age national championships, in which she notched two personal bests and made the final of the 200m breaststroke.
Maddison also won a silver and a bronze medal in the 100m and 200m breaststroke
events at the Queensland State School Championships.
She qualified for eight events at the Queensland State Championships and made the final in five of those events, prompting selection in the Queensland Bronze Development Squad and the Queensland state team trials. Maddison, 16, is in Year 11 at Grace Caboolture and trains seven times a week for up to three hours a session.
Last month Maddison also competed at the Queensland State Short Course Championships in six events.
She is only a fraction of a second away from qualifying for next year’s Olympic trials, so that is her major goal at the moment.
■ BRIBIE Island State School P & C this year boasts a virtually new team who are excited about what they can do for their school. The team is currently working on the upcoming Father’s Day raffle, drawn at the end of last month. The business community has been more than generous when the P & C team has contacted them, including the Bribie Island RSL Club, which donated five $50 vouchers. Other donations have included a full-year gym membership, a four-by-four adventure voucher, a Weber barbecue and many others from a wide range of businesses, including local restaurants, pharmacies, car care companies and tattoo parlours.

SMOKIE is one of the biggest bands in the world today as their massive success story continues to flourish around the globe, including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and even China.
Smokie is a band that has sold out tours and had platinum album sales in four decades - the 70s, 80s, 90s and present day.
Smokie’s sound is a combination of hook-laden songs and distinctive but unashamedly stateside-influenced soft rock harmonies.
Their landmark ballad of unrequited love, Living Next Door to Alice, was released in 1976 and Australia quickly embraced it, sending it soaring up the charts to No. 1.
Now, Smokie Revival are bringing back all the hits in a show at the Bribie RSL on Friday, October 25 that does not fail to conjure many singalong moments as the audience reflects on so many incredible and memorable songs.

Operation Jaywick was conducted from September 1, 1943 to November 19, 1943 and involved a clandestine attack by a group of six allied operatives against Japanese shipping at Singapore.
ON the night of September 26, 1943, six men in three small collapsible
canoes paddled into Singapore Harbour.
Limpet mines were attached to several Japanese cargo ships and their timers set. As quickly as they arrived, they left.
Shortly after, massive explosions rocked the area and about 39,000 tonnes of shipping were sent to the bottom of the harbour.
The men were members of Z Special Unit, later to be known as Z Force. This was Operation Jaywick and was to be one of Z Force’s finest hours but was the beginning of a tragedy that would start to unfold a year later.
Earlier in September, the Krait, a small ship disguised as an Asian fishing boat, left Australia for what was to be an ambitious attack deep in the heart of Japanese-held territory. They sailed north through the Indonesian islands. The 14 men on board, led by Captain Lyon, a British officer, disguised themselves as native fisherman.
They managed to sail undetected and two days before the attack, the six left the Krait and paddled 50km to shelter in a small cave near Singapore Harbour.
After the attack, the commandos waited for the commotion to die down and met up with the Krait six days later and returned to Australia.
The attack on Singapore Harbour took the Japanese completely by surprise. They had no way of knowing that it was a group who had sailed all the way from Australia.
Instead they insisted that it was conducted by locals and embarked on a campaign of interrogation, torture and even executions, particularly in the Chinese population.
Today, the Krait is moored in Darling Harbour in Sydney as part of the Australian National Maritime Museum, in remembrance of Operation Jaywick.
A GROUP from the Bribie Island Naval Association had a boat trip from Hamilton to the Gold Coast on June 22.

THE amazing phenomenon of cold winds arriving at the same time as the Ekka proved itself true once again on Sunday, August 11.
With very cold 7 degrees at 6am in morning and on top of that was the wind chill factor which made a gloriously sunny day into a golfing nightmare for Bribie Island RSL Golf Club members at the Caboolture course.
The very brave 16 players who ventured out on to the course, which was in very good condition for this time of year, battled through the ever-changing wind direction and very tricky greens, with many players having far more putts than their stableford score.
As nearly always, steady as she goes Karran Quinn managed the course in her usual way and came in nine points above her nearest rival, her husband Trevor.
Another culling of handicap is on the cards for Karran.

Thankfully spring weather has begun to appear. On Sunday, July 28, the Bribie Island Golf Club had lost the chill factor with a pleasant 13 degrees greeting players.
The single stableford was the program event but most eyes were on the eight players
playing in the quarter-finals of the single matchplay.
Both events saw some great play and some really great camaraderie which was a tremendous tribute to the all players and the one thing which makes our social golf club what it is today.
Ash Naylor took home the winner’s cheque with 45 points and stalwart Ian Montgomery, with 43 points, took out the runner-up prize.
Both as captain and as a member of Monty’s playing group, I was so pleased to see Monty play so well and enjoy his game as much as he did.
Of course, I did attempt to convince him that his quality of play is usually a reflection of the standard of the players he is grouped with.
Monty’s response to that comment is not for publication, but we all had a good laugh over the matter.
NTPs: Men’s: 4th and 14th Ernie Hall, 7th Paul Hagger, 16th Nick Brunt. Ladies: 4th and 14th Cathy Cooke, 7th Angie Naylor, 16th Karran Quinn. NAGA Kevin Hobbs.
In matchplay, Shane Shipton downed Jack Pipia, Mark Hardy beat Paul Hagger, Nick Brunt beat Craig Alexander and Archie Leishman defeated John Estreich.
Thanks also to Karran and Trevor for donating the game day raffle prize.

AN early morning whiting competition will be held on Woorim Beach to provide a light-hearted social outing.
From 6am to 11am on September 15, the Bribie Island RSL Fishing Club competition on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Rickman Parade is for those fishos who love the sound of waves and who love the feeling of sand between their toes.
Those who do not want to participate in the competition can enjoy the views of the sunrise in spring, a relaxing walk along the beach or a social chat with other club members.
Can you imagine getting up early on a Sunday morning for a quiet drive to Woorim to be greeted with a hearty breakfast served
by our famous catering duo Peter and Ron.Bacon and eggs and tea and coffee
provided with a sausage sizzle at 11.30am and presentations at noon.
The snapper have been everywhere this winter and the Gold Coast has been boasting magnificent catches.
But it seems that all the Bribie Island fish have moved south. The past 10 years has seen a rapid decline in the number of snapper that have been caught by our members, although there have been some great catches of 2kg-4kg in the Pumicestone Passage.
The bream and flathead have also been active and John Casey has been amongst them again, catching another 1kg monster.
