Since 1897, Christodora has helped NYC youth to grow and thrive by forming deep connections with the community and the natural world. In our year-round “nature,

learning, leadership” programs, students master the challenges of backcountry excursions and hands-on scientific inquiry. They define their roles as leaders and team members and are prepared to serve as agents of change in diverse careers.

From public school classrooms, to urban oases including local parks and the New York Botanical Garden, to wilderness programs at our Manice Center in the Berkshires and in the Great Mountain Forest -- and more -- students join the Christodora

adventure and discover their personal and academic passions. They continue their engagement with us for years; alumni comprise more than half

of our program staff, serving as powerful mentors.

We are 3-time award winner of the prestigious “HI Impact Award” from a national research organization for the exceptional growth our students make in key areas of personal growth that predict long-term success. Your support of the Christodora

Campfire will help us enter our 125th year with resources for even broader impact.

Summer 2021

M. CHRISTINE CARTYSpirit of Christodora Award Recipient Chris Carty has been a member of the board of directors of Christodora since 2013. As a child, she spent summers in a cabin in western Massachusetts with her family where she learned to love nature by exploring the woods and a nearby lake daily. As a board member, she derives great satisfaction from being part of a team that delivers programs that ignite and deepen our students’ interest in nature and preserving the environment, while teaching and

fostering leadership skills. In her professional life, Chris is Senior Counsel at Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis where she specializes in employment law and litigation.

She is the former Managing Partner of the New York office and formerly a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Chris also has acted as outside counsel to and served on the boards of several non-profit organizations throughout her career.

SIN SENHChristodora Alumni Award Recipient Sin is a registered Professional Geologist with over twenty years of experience in environmental site assessment, remediation, and risk management. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in Geology and Environmental Studies and a Master’s degree in Hydrogeology from Binghamton University.

He is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer at Roux. Mr. Senh has served as the Project Principal on hundreds of sites, including

investigation and remediation of landfills, manufactured gas plants, petroleum releases, and chlorinated solvent contamination at former industrial sites and dry cleaners. He has also been retained as a testifying expert witness in cases that include allocation of remediation costs, soil and groundwater contaminant fate and transport, and determining timing of releases.

CHRIS MCKENZIESpirit of Christodora Award Recipient Chris Mckenzie has been a member of Christodora’s board of directors since 2007, and has been an enthusiastic supporter since the 1990’s. While on the board, Chris has assisted Christodora on risk management, regulatory compliance and nonprofit governance matters. Chris and his wife Paula and two daughters are life-long lovers of the outdoors, with a passion for wildlife and birds in particular.

In his professional life, Chris proudly serves as General Counsel of the Wildlife Conservation Society. As WCS’s chief legal officer, he is responsible for all legal services and corporate governance for the organization worldwide. He joined WCS in 2011, after many years in private practice focusing on environmental counseling and litigation. Chris has a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Georgia and a law degree from Columbia Law School.

Honorees Honoree

After I arrived to the US in 1982 from Hong Kong, I spent most of my childhood in the Bronx (’84 to ’99). I attended the Pace Academy at Junior High School 118 (now MS 118) and my math

teacher Leonard Plastino (who was deeply involved with Christodora for many years) arranged for our class to go to the Manice

Education Center (MEC) for an overnight trip in the spring of 1988. I was hooked so once I learned that I could be at MEC for more than

a few days, I signed up for the summer session. I went back again and again to those summer sessions. In fact, I was a Counselor in Training (CIT) during my last year at MEC – thinking that I might

want a real job at MEC. I didn’t know about the relationship between MEC and Christodora until I was invited to an event after

I graduated from my undergrad where I met Pamela Manice. Then, just last year I reached out to reconnect.

In Memoriam

Christodora honors the legacy and memory of

Howland Murphy. He loved the outdoors and his family and

friends, and was known for his loyalty and kindness. His generous bequest to

Christodora reflects his belief in the healing

power of nature.

Christodora mourns the loss of George W. Gowen, member

of our board since the late 1970s. George represented the link between his generation and the next. He had a passion for

nature and a deep commitment to providing educational

opportunities for the thousands of students who participated

in Christodora’s outdoor learning programs.

We deeply miss our intelligent, elegant and competent fellow board member.

We are delighted to support Christodora’s efforts to promote the educational and developmental growth of New York City youth.
