On behalf of everyone at Alliance I hope you will take full advantage of the presen-tations, discussions, and show specials we have scheduled over the next two days.

While we hope your time spent will be both valuable and entertaining, this is our first attempt at an on-line show, and we know we won’t get everything right. Feel free to talk to your reps about what you like and don’t like about the show.

Going digital this year was a daunting process at the beginning of this, but we pulled it off. We are very excited at how quickly, and how well, we pulled this event together. It’s been an interesting year full of tough challenges as well as perhaps some interesting opportunities, but I am happy that we are able to gather for this virtual event.

During my time at WizKids, the Alliance Open House was an event I looked forward to each year, and that certainly did not change once I joined the Alliance marketing team. Let me tell you, Emily and Katie work tirelessly to make this show a viable opportunity to bring folk at every level within our industry together, and this year is no exception.

While the physical event is planned over several months, this year’s virtual event came together in a matter of weeks; our presenters and exhibitors had a comparatively short time to prepare their materials for this show, and I am in awe once again by the industriousness as well as the “come togetherness” at every level of our industry.

Emily Hunter, Marketing DirectorWow! What a change of scenery! This year would have been my 9th Open House in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I can picture the Grand Wayne Convention Center now… a nice fall day with 65-degree temperatures. Typically, I’d spend my early mornings grabbing a Starbucks drink before my 12-hour Open House workday, where I’d be buzzing around the Convention Center answering questions and barking orders. Can you imagine me running around the Convention Center now at 30 weeks pregnant? What a sight! These are certainly different times, and I’m so happy Alliance can still offer our retailers an opportunity to connect with peers and publishers.

USING DISCORDFOR RETAILERS 2020

WHY DISCORD?Discord is a very versatile platform that allows for text interaction between retailers and publishers as well as video and voice. The plat-form is very robust and once one gets the hang of it, very intuitive and easy to use. The server has been set up in a way to help exhibitors and retailers engage and work together to find ways to help each other.

ROLES & BADGESJust like a real convention the people populating the server will have badges. These badges are called roles and are displayed as different colors. Attendee and Exhibitor names will show up in these colors so you can easily identify them. (see chart to right)

CHANNELS AND CATEGORIESThere are many areas in the Discord we are calling channels. These all refer to the Text and Voice channels and are grouped into Categories. Those categories help organize what attendees can find and where to find it. At the top of every Category there will be an INFO channel that will describe how the channels are used in that particular category.

TEXT channels all have a # sign in front of them. Some channels like the info and the FAQ channels will be read-only and are there to be information only.

VOICE channels allow for a microphone and video to be shared. Only enter channels as allowed and please mute the micro-phone during presentations. This icon/control can be found in the App on the lower left side.

GETTING COMFORTABLEOne of the advantages of Discord is the ability to be in many places at once. A person can be monitoring a channel while doing many other things at the same time. Exhibitors can pin answers, links, and documents directly into their Discord channels making them a great resource for attendees. Keep an eye, in particular, on the #Alli-ance-Announcements and #Events-Schedule channels to keep informed.

CHANNEL PINSExhibitors will pin important information in their text channels in the Exhibit hall. Be sure to check them by clicking on the Push Pin icon in the top of the APP. This will show links and important information.EVENTSSome events will be streamed on YouTube. For these events, people who want to interact and ask questions, will need to have a YouTube account. Events like the workshops, will be streamed in chan-nels on Discord. Check into those channels during the time and there will be an associated Text channel for questions. Questions can also be directed to the publisher in their booth and can be answered after the event. Stay up to date and check the schedule channel for the times and locations for each event.

STILL NEED GUIDANCE?Please find the video we have created to explain these features and walk through setup a little bit more in depth. We will send the link to the video in the email attendee package along with the links for joining the Discord. Please only share these things with the direct staff who will be involved in the process.

The main gathering place of the event is our Discord server. Our server is going to be the launching off point for all of our events, demos, panels, and more. If you’re not familiar with Discord, we also recommend looking at the basic guide and watching the video for discord basics which is designed for all attendees of the event.

To make navigating the Discord server a little easier we’ve put together a crash course of where to find valuable resources and events. The navigation screen on the left allows you to jump from channel to channel. Click the channel to display the subchannels listed within it. Let’s quickly explore each channel.

In the Welcome channel you’ll find the #lobby and #discord-info-and-FAQ subchannels. The lobby is a place to mingle and say hello, while the discord info and FAQ subchannel offers valuable resources for navigating our Discord server. If you haven’t already, please watch our How To videos.

Alliance Info and Help: This channel has the most information regarding the show for your reference. Click #alliance-info-and-help to learn how each subchannel works. You can catch announcements and links to the schedule, presentations, and live streams here.

Harrison Rooms (Presenters): The Harrison Rooms are a tribute to the Grand Wayne Convention Center where we typically host Open House annually. We’re hosting all presentations like our #keynote-presentations, #featured-presentations, and #spotlight-presentations in this channel along with our evening #demo-night-sponors.

Workshops: The Workshop channel has the workshop presentation schedule along with links to view each pre-recorded seminar.

Exhibit Hall (Text & Voice): Each exhibitor has one text channel and one voice channel. The Exhibit Hall VOICE channels are located under the Exhibit hall TEXT channels. We’ve broken up each Exhibit Hall channel by Publisher names A-L and M-Z. Exhibit Hall (text) includes valuable resources from publisher for download, and a chance to interact via text. Exhibit Hall Voice allows for live streaming, and that “traditional booth feel” to interact with publishers face to face.

Retailer Lounge: Drop in to say hello to your peers and drop us your feedback and thoughts on the show in our #retailer-feedback subchannel. Publishers will not have ac-cess to the retailer lounge – only retailers and Alliance staff will have access.
