TIPS ON BULLYING (Parts of this article are excerpted with permission from the American Academy of Pediatrics –AAP facts on
“Back To School Tips”)
By now, most kids in our area have returned to school, or are about to shortly. Many children will be starting
Head Start or a preschool program for the first time. One concern parents increasingly have, is how to respond
if they believe their child is being bullied, or may be a bully.
Bullying or cyberbullying is when one child picks on another child repeatedly. Bullying can be physical, verbal or
social. It can happen at school, on the playground, over the Internet, or through mobile devices like cell phones.
When your child is being bullied:
a) Help your child learn how to respond by teaching him/ her to-
Look the bully in the eye
Stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation
Walk away
b) Practice with your child HOW to say in a firm voice-
“I don’t like what you are doing”
“Please do NOT talk to me like that”
“Why would you say that?”
c) Teach your child when and how to ask a trusted adult for help.
d) Encourage your child to make friends with other children.
e) Support activities that interest your child.
f) Alert school officials to the problems and work with them on solutions.
g) Make sure an adult who knows about bullying can watch out for your child’s safety and well-
being when you cannot be there.
h) Monitor your child’s social media or texting interactions so you can identify problems before
they get out of hand.
When your child is the bully:
a) Be sure your child knows that bullying is never OK.
b) Set firm and consistent limits on your child’s aggressive behavior.
c) Be a positive role model. Show children they can get what they want without teasing,
threatening or hurting someone.
d) Use effective, non-physical discipline, such as loss of privileges.
e) Develop practical solutions with the school principal, teachers, and parents of the children
your child has bullied.

Getting back into a routine for school can be a lot of work for a busy family. Healthy Habits 4 Life (HH4Life)
is about making small and simple changes that can have a big impact on your health! Here are four simple
steps to help add healthy habits to your daily routine: Aim for 5-2-1-0!
Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day
Add fruits to your breakfast and vegetables to your favorite lunch and dinner foods.
Try new fruits and vegetables with your children to find new favorites.
Limit “screen time” to 2 hours per day or less
Enjoy activities outside of those provided by TV, computers and phones/tablets.
Establish a regular screen-free time with your family (dinner, 2 hours before bed, etc.).
Get at least 1 hour of physical activity every day
Spend time outside in the crisp fall weather.
Take short walks throughout the day that add up to 60 minutes.
Limit sugar sweetened drinks to 0
Drink water first for thirst!
Choose low-fat or fat free milk, or 100% juice over sodas, sports drinks or energy drinks.
