It’s not too late to get active this summer! Physical activity is any movement that requires energy. It can be anything from cleaning to running to playing with your kids. Getting enough physical activity can build strong bodies, calm minds and create more peaceful sleep. Here are a few ways to get active with your kids:
1. GET OUTSIDE! Sunshine, fresh air and open space are great motivators for both you and your chil-dren to be active. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen.
2. Rainy day? Play Duck-duck-goose or musical chairs. Have a dance party or act out scenes from your fa-vorite book. Get moving any way you can.
3. Children tend to naturally like to move, so let them. Pick a safe place inside or stick close outside and see how they explore. Keep a close watch and be mindful of safety.
4. Parks in Pittsburgh provide lots of space and often built-in activities. Pack some snacks and head to the park for a day of fun.
Take a break from chores or errands, or perhaps before bed, to spend some time stretching. Loosening up your muscles can help you, and your child, move better throughout the day and rest easier at night.

Watermelon Craft
Materials:
Paper Plate (any size)
Red, Green, & Black Markers
Scissors
Directions:
First, start by cutting the paper plate in half. Parents, this is a
good time to work with scissors with your children by showing
them how to hold them to cut the plate for their watermelon.
Next, allow your child to color the red and green parts of the
watermelon. During this time, talk about what they know about
watermelon. Do they like it? Should they eat the seeds? Is the
green part good?
Finally, give your child the black marker and have them make
seeds on the red part of the watermelon to complete it!
Enjoy and Have Fun!
**One way to make this craft even more fun, is to use red,
green, and black tissues paper with glue to create the colors on
the plate.
Cheerio Corn on the Cob
Materials:
Green and Yellow Con-
struction Paper
Cheerios (Whole Grain or
Regular)
Scissors
Glue
Directions:
Start by tracing the corn
on the cob pattern provid-
ed onto the yellow and
green construction paper.
Cut out the corn and the leaves then glue the corn on top
of the leaves. This would be good for children to help with
scissor cutting to get them used to holding scissors and
opening and closing their hand to make the scissors work.
(**This is just a suggestion. If you are not yet comfortable
with your children using scissors go ahead and do this part
yourself.)
Then, allow children to glue on the cheerios to make it look
like kernels of corn.
