Halloween is a time for enjoying sweet treats and dressing up in your favorite costume. Don’t let the holiday “trick” you into bad skin, though. Inexpensive costume makeup and too many sweets and chocolate can aggravate acne, rosacea and cause rashes.

Before you apply that smoky black eye makeup or dip your hand in the candy bowl, check out our tips and tricks to protect your skin this Halloween. Buy Quality Makeup. It can be difficult to justify paying for quality makeup for a Halloween costume. However, keep in mind that less expensive makeup may contain ingredients that clog pores, irritate the skin and cause a rash. Consider using powders or an organic face paint kit instead. These will allow your skin to breathe through your makeup and avoid suffocating your pores.

Prep Your Skin. Thoroughly moisturize your skin before you apply makeup. It will help your face stay fresh and hydrated, and will give your costume makeup a more polished look.

Remove All Makeup Before Bed. No matter how exhausted the night leaves you, be sure to properly wash your face before heading to bed. Heavy makeup left on overnight can clog pores and cause a breakout. Sleeping in makeup also results in unnecessary exposure to free radicals that can break down healthy collagen and result in fine lines from the inflammation. Go For the Dark Chocolate. It’s a challenge to resist candy on Halloween. Luckily, there are some skin-friendly options available! Grab for the dark chocolate pieces, especially varieties with nuts as they provide some protein. f - Juvederm/Perlane/Voluma Juvederm, Perlane and Voluma are fillers that are used to add volume. Juvederm and Perlane are effective for augmenting thin lips, filling nasolabial folds (deep folds that form from the nose to the mouth), shaping facial contours, treating smile lines and anti-aging. Voluma adds volume to the cheek area and helps enhance the contour of your face to create a more youthful appearance. Treatments can last up to 12 months or longer.

g - Lateral Lip ElevationLateral Lip Elevation is a 30-minute lifting procedure that permanently lifts the down-turned corners of the mouth. After local numbing medication is applied, a small incision is made at the edge of the lip line at each corner of the mouth. This will correct the grumpy, saddened look that commonly appears as we age. There is minimal downtime; you can go back to work in one to seven days and wear makeup and lipstick in six days.

h - SculptraSculptra is an injectable solution that restores and corrects the signs of volume loss. Skin Care Tips for Athletes School is Back in Session Going back to school marks the start of many sporting events. Don’t let skin infections and irritations interfere with your game. Here are sport-related conditions and how to prevent and treat them effectively.

FootballPadding up for the game can cause acne, miliaria and lice

Swimming Hours of swimming can lead to dry, dehydrated skin and acne, plus dry hair and scalp

Soccer & TennisHours spent sweating in the sun can lead to over exposure and skin rashes

Wrestling The sport with the greatest degree of close contact – wrestlers are prone to contagious infections

Cross Country Long distance running can lead to fungal infections

Acne – Excessive sweating from helmets and shoulder pads can cause acne. Using a benzoyl peroxide wash in the shower helps to prevent and treat. Milaria – Excessive sweating causes these red bumps on the chest, back and face. Use a salicylic acid wash or salicylic acid acne treatment pad to help them dry. Lice – Sharing clothes and helmets can spread lice to your scalp and body. Apply Cetaphil cleanser into the hair and scalp for 15 minutes, and then blow-dry the area for 15 minutes to kill the bugs.

Acne – Pores get water logged from hours of swimming. Dry them out with a benzoyl peroxide wash, and hydrate and protect the skin twice a day with Cerave moisturizing lotion. Eczema – Wash, hydrate and protect the skin twice a day with Cerave moisturizing cream and cleanser. Dry Hair & Scalp – Chemicals in the pool dry out and damage your hair, and can leave you with an itchy scalp. Use the H&H Science Detox My Hair kit once a week to keep your hair strong and healthy.

Sun Poisoning – Calendula gel and aspirin are effective treatments. To prevent sun poisoning while playing soccer or tennis, always use a long lasting SPF 30+ lotion that is sweat proof and waterproof. Acne – Using a benzoyl peroxide cleanser daily can help prevent Acne. Miliaria – Using a salicylic cleanser daily can help prevent Miliaria.

Athlete’s Foot – In order to prevent this fungal infection, rotate your shoes and let them dry before running in them again. Fungal infections are treated with Lamisil cream applied daily. Calluses – Corn pads can be worn for calluses. They can be pared down with a foot file and prevented by wearing wide, comfortable shoes.

Impetigo – This highly contagious infection needs to be treated quickly with a triple antibiotic cream and oral antibiotics. Using a benzoyl peroxide cleanser after each wrestling meet can help prevent impetigo from occurring. Herpes – This highly contagious virus must be treated orally with Valtrex. Ringworm – This fungal infection must be treated with Lamisil cream and oral Lamisil if in the scalp. To prevent ringworm from occurring, use a benzoyl peroxide wash after each wrestling meet. Scabies – This highly itchy condition must be treated with oral Stromectol. Avoid sharing items to reduce spreading the infection. Molluscum – A contagious virus that can be popped at home and then washed with soapy water. Lice – Close contact and wrestling helmets can spread lice to your scalp and body. Apply Cetaphil cleanser into the hair and scalp for 15 minutes, and then blow-dry the area for 15 minutes to kill the bugs.
