STAFF CHRISTMAS LOVE OFFERING: Again this year , the Staff-Parish Com-mittee wants to give the congregation an opportunity to contribute to a “love offering” for the church staff of Ivan, June, Emily, Debby, and Toni. Today is the last Sunday left to contribute. The money collected will be divided and presented before Christmas.

END OF YEAR CONTRIBUTIONS: Federal law requires that all contr ibutions to LUMC must be either in our hands by December 31st or, if mailed, post-marked on or before December 31st in order to qualify the giver for a tax deduction in 2015. Gifts received which don’t meet these requirements will be gratefully accepted and credited to 2016.

Make Sure the Church – Not the IRS – Benefits From Your Stock Market Gains Did you know you can give to the church and avoid capital gains taxes at the same time? You can do this by donating stock or mutual fund shares. Let's say you bought 100 shares of XYZ of stock in 2001 for $1,000 and it’s now worth $3,000. You decide to donate these shares to the church. You receive tax credit for a donation of $3,000 in computing your annual taxes. And your $3,000 donation to the church only cost you $1,000. By giving stock shares directly to the church you avoid paying taxes on capital gains and the church, being tax exempt, does not pay taxes on the donation. The transaction is quite simple and can be handled by your broker. But you need to act before December 31, and it is important that you let the church office know in advance that your shares are being donated. Contact John Wells at (336) 945-3713 or [email protected] for more details.
