In the end we attracted £94,000 of outside funding to go with £12,000 from our reserves to complete the work, which included the installation of an air-source heat pump for the Pavilion, floodlighting for the MUGA (multi-use games area) and tennis courts, pedestrian lighting up to the Pavilion and most recently, resurfacing of the tennis courts to bring them up to a more modern and attractive standard. None of this could have been achieved without financial support from Sport England, the County Council (via funds attached to housing developments in our area), the Durham Area Action Partnership and funding from our County Councillors Neighbourhood budgets. Message from the Chair — Councillor Karon Willis

I would like ALL residents to take the time and fill in the survey on the back page, as it is you the residents that we serve and your opinion matters to us. As Chair I would like to introduce Angela the new Parish Clerk onto the Parish and thank David for his service and to wish him a happy retirement.

Given the significant improvements as residents will have seen, we decided to increase the Parish Council precept (the technical term for the whole amount we recover via council tax), from £47,952 to £53,140.

The Parish Council felt it was necessary in order to recover some of the exceptional costs associated with the Pavilion refurbishment. In reality the actual impact of the increase on someone owning a Band D property is very modest at less than 5p per week, and for the whole year less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks

Another successful project from last year was the erection of new remembrance tablets on the Parish War Memorial, listing the names of those from our area who died for their country during the First World War. These were erected in time for the centenary of the end of the Great War last November, and thanks must go to Councillor Peter Dawson who led and researched the project.

Peter is now in the process of working to complete the same exercise for those who died in the Second World War and in later conflicts.

Looking forward, the park area around the war memorial is currently owned by the County Council. The Parish Council is looking into the possibility of taking over the area and maintaining it in conjunction with local residents. We would be interested to hear from anyone who might be interested in working with us to improve it (e.g. improved flower beds etc), you can use the attached Parish Survey to let us know.

Our Parish Clerk, David Temple, decided to retire this summer after serving the Parish for over seven years. We wish publicly to record our thanks to David for all his hard work over that time. He leaves the Parish in excellent shape for his successor…

…who is Angela Foster who joined us on 1 July this year. Angela has experience as a Parish Clerk working for two other local councils (in Edmondsley and previously in Waldridge) and will be working at the King George V Pavilion two mornings per week, if you wish to speak with Angela, please contact her on

07572 004256 or email her on [email protected].

You are welcome to visit her at the Pavilion, just ring first to make sure she is available.

After a delay in getting our lights put up for the 2018 festive season, we now have our lights up running and they will be lit around the King George V fields this year, to complement those that the Community Centre have.

We think it might be nice if there was a larger display to light up Framwellgate Moor Front Street, but that would need the buy-in of local traders to help us make it happen. Is this something you want? Let us know in the Parish survey (see back page).

We are pleased to report that the Framwellgate Moor Community Centre has now finished a project to refurbish the old kitchen area to create a new café facility that is more modern and welcoming. This offers opportunities for new groups and individuals who might benefit from community involvement.

An Opportunity To Make A Difference To The Lives Of

Young People

Parish Councillor, Colin Hillary is appealing to businesses to support Durham City Youth Project (DCYP) who are based at Framwellgate Moor Community Centre. Small monthly financial contributions are needed to support the service which supports approximately 600 young disadvantaged people every year. The scheme provides them with opportunities to access the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Junior and Senior Youth Clubs and a Youth Council, giving young people a voice both within the charity and the community. Support can be promised via automatic bank transfer from just a few pounds each month. Every little bit really does make a difference for the services provided by the DCYP. If you have a community arm to your organisation or a simple desire to make a real difference, Cllr. Hillary would welcome your approach . Please contact him directly at: [email protected]

Framwellgate Moor Parish Council - Parish Survey 2019

Your Parish Council is seeking your opinion on a variety of issues, please help us in the future development of our areas (Brasside, Framwellgate Moor and Pity Me).

The first issue is a big one and we really do need to know your views:

Should the Parish Council investigate extending its area to include Newton Hall, which is currently unparished?

(This change could bring in greater resources without an increase in council tax and give the Parish Council greater capacity to do things for the community of enlarged area. It would of course require the consent of

people across the whole area).

Your response: Yes / No (please circle your choice)

Next, please tell us about any problems you may have in the following areas so that the Parish Council can see whether it can initiate improvements: (use separate sheet if necessary)

Please send your response to: King George V Pavilion, Front Street, Framwellgate Moor DH1 5BL

or you can respond by email to [email protected]

or complete it on-line at our website: www.framwellgatemoorparishcouncil.co.uk

This survey will help your Parish Council understand the community’s needs and priorities. It will be used to:

Produce a Parish Plan

Inform decisions on community priorities and needs

Provide evidence for bids the Council may make for grants or additional funds

We will report back to you with a summary of the responses and look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Karon Willis, Chair of the Parish Council
