Rejoice, the Lord is Nigh

Father Robert Fulton

Last Sunday was known as Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. Gaudete means “Rejoice” in La n. Rose vestments are normally worn to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we light the rose candle on our Advent wreath. We are filled with a sense that the me is ge ng short and soon our joy will be complete in the celebra on of our Savior’s birth. But s ll we are wai ng. Advent is the season of wai ng … and hoping … and wishing for some assurance that God does indeed love us.

This is not so different from what John the Bap st was experiencing in prison in last Sunday’s Gospel. He had heard about the miracles of Jesus, and he wants to know if this is real; is Jesus the Messiah he has been wai ng for and preaching about? I think many good people share John’s pondering … Is Jesus the one, or should we look for another? And a big reason why so many ques on where God and Jesus are in their lives is that they cannot see God at work in the everyday dimensions of their lives. So I challenge each of us to reflect on our faith in the way we live our lives, in the decisions

we make every day. Does the simple fact that Jesus is your Lord have any impact on how we live out our responsibili es as a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend, an employee, a volunteer, or a ci zen of this great na on? If you were on trial and the charge was that you were a Chris an … would there be enough evidence to convict you?

This week, we celebrate the fourth and final week of Advent. Once every three years, we hear the

Annuncia on narra ve from Ma hew’s Gospel which is wri en from the point of view of Joseph. The other two years, we hear the Annuncia on from Mary’s experience as reported in the Gospel of Luke. However, the two narra ves have elements in common: 1) a birth in Bethlehem, even though the family is from Nazareth and Jesus would be called Jesus of Nazareth; 2) a virginal concep on; 3) a pregnancy caused through the ac on of the Holy Spirit; and 4) Joseph resolves to accept Jesus into his life and family.

The assump on a faithful Jew like Joseph must have made when he heard that Mary was pregnant is that Mary got pregnant in the usual manner, hence his decision to divorce her quietly. It took further divine interven on in the form of a dream to head off that disaster, and the disgracing and shaming (not to men on the poten al stoning) of Mary. We need to understand in that patriarchal culture, the birth of the first born son was all important and crucial to the family line and property transfer. The fact Joseph is prepared to give up the right to sire his own first born son and accept and even name Jesus says a lot about the character of Joseph. This is a narra ve of surprising and unexpected events and suggests a God of unexpected ac ons. In this final week of Advent, we too should ponder the

surprising ways God has worked in our lives.

ST. LOUISE BOOK CLUB St. Louise Book Club meets on Monday evenings at 6:30 pm in the board Room. Our next mee ng is Monday, January 30th at 6:30 pm. We will discuss the book “The Red Lacquered Gate” by William E. Barre . The story is about Fr. Edward Ned Galvin who was born in Ireland in 1882, the oldest in a family of seven children. A er he was ordained to the Catholic priesthood, he realized that there were more priest in his na ve land than parishes. So Ned Galvin immigrated to the United States and turned a struggling church in Brooklyn into a thriving parish. But Father Galvin had a secret desire to do missionary work. He was especially a racted to China and had read all the books on the subject his local library could provide. Finally, his wish was granted and he set out with a group of dedicated helpers on a mission to the Far East. William E. Barre created this colorful, drama c portrait of an unusual man whose strong Catholic faith helped him survive the horrors and heart-break of his demanding mission to China. (www.Barnes and Noble).

Father Joseph was ordained a priest twenty years ago on December 8, 1996. Father Joseph was ordained in Italy at the Casa Portosa—Our Lady of Sorrows shrine. He celebrated his first Mass the next day at the Holy House of Loreto. The House of Loreto is the actual house of the annuncia on . The angels brought the house from Pales ne to Italy. Father Joseph said he feels blessed serving the people of God, from Australia, England and now in the United States. Father Joseph was ordained a Franciscan priest and is now in transi on to become an Archdiocesean priest. The school kids from St. Louise School made him a life size paper father Joseph complete with a Bible and a Rosary. The back side had handwri en messages from the Eighth Grade Students. Father Joseph also received a large card made to remind him of his favorite place Disneyland.

Set guidelines for holiday visits to ensure your child’s safety Your holiday plans may include spending a few nights at a family member or friend’s house, possibly with all the kids piling into a few rooms to sleep. Before you go, remind your kids about their body boundaries and what to do if someone violates those limits. Explain which areas are okay for others to touch and what areas are off limits. Inform the child that any areas that would be covered by underwear or swimsuits are off limits. For more informa on on helping a child establish boundaries, a copy of the VIRTUS® ar cle “Teaching Boundaries,”
