Registration and £100 deposit due 23 February Setting the Scene: Pre-Conference Tour Days 9-11 September 2018 Castle Green Hotel, Kendal Provisional programme Sunday 9 September: Hotel check-in from 3 p.m. At 4 p.m., Mandy Marshall, Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria, will be in reception to discuss the days ahead and answer any questions. We gather at 6 p.m. at Alexander’s Pub (located in the grounds of the Castle Green Hotel) for a welcome drink followed by a traditional Sunday roast dinner. Monday 10 September: After breakfast we take a scenic coach journey to see Lake District villages and lakes with Beatrix Potter connections – Bowness, Windermere, Ambleside, Rydal and Grasmere. We alight at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick and cruise across Squirrel Nutkin’s Derwentwater to arrive at Lingholm, the newly restored estate where Beatrix spent several summer holidays. We visit the walled garden with displays on her life and characters. Those interested in purchasing lunch (or just cake!) and shopping can do so at Lingholm Kitchen. Our next stop is a National Trust farm for a demonstration of sheepdogs gathering Herdwick - the breed that Beatrix championed - down from the fells. Then it’s back to the hotel for some rest and relaxation, and perhaps some time in the hotel’s health spa. You might wish to take your evening meal at the Castle Green’s Greenhouse restaurant, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Lake District skyline. Tuesday 11 September: After breakfast we journey through the southern edge of the National Park and along the shore of Coniston Water. We pass through Beatrix’s Monk Coniston estate and take a circular stroll around Tarn Hows – wear your walking shoes! We stop near Hawkshead for a tour of the Georgian mansion and grounds at Belmount Hall. This gorgeous property was owned by Beatrix and was the former home of her rather eccentric American friend, Rebekah Owen. We return to the Castle Green stimulated by two days immersed in many places that Beatrix Potter knew and cherished. It’s time to register for the Conference and meet other Society Members. Registration fee for Tour days and full Conference (see other side for details): £1,150 per person in single room; £950 if sharing a double/twin. General: To keep the Tour fee as affordable as possible, lunch and dinner on Monday are at your discretion. The Castle Green is a short taxi ride from Oxenholme Station on the West Coast Main Line. Deadline: Initial deposit is due 23 February. Questions: Contact Mandy Marshall, Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria, [email protected]. Reg. Charity No. 281198 and 1175188
