Setting up StrataBugs on a Windows 64 system

Last updated: 27 Nov 2009

StrataBugs is capable of running on Windows Vista64, however the installation program from the CD or from the download will not run. The restrictions noted in the instructions for Vista all apply to Vista64.

Detailed installation steps:

1. Insert the installation CD. The CD will not auto-play. You will get this message:

If you select run setup.exe you will get this:

2. Select the option to open folder to view files. You will see a file listing like this:

3. Double-click on the bin folder, select all the files (CTRL-A), right-click and select Copy from the popup menu.

4. Create a folder C:\SBUGS and go to it. (Do not install in the Windows "Program Files" folder).

5. Select Paste from the popup menu to insert the bin folder contents from the CD:

6. If you are installing a stand-alone system with a dongle (Sentinel Key), Return to the CD and locate the usb_dongle folder, and run the setup program within. (Or, preferably go to the StrataBugs web site and download the latest driver: http://www.stratadata.co.uk/ bottom of page:

http://www.stratadata.co.uk/Sentinel%20Protection%20Installer%207.1.1.zip)

7. Follow the instructions for installing the driver and take the default options.

8. Find the Accfile folder on the CD and copy and paste the contents into your StrataBugs folder:

9. Using the file manager, go to the following folder C:\Windows\SysWOW64\, and double-click the file odbcad32.exe to bring up the ODBC Administrator:

10. Press Add… to add a data source: Select “Microsoft Access driver” and enter a data source name SBUGS1-8. Press Select… and select the file C:\SBUGS\sbugs.mdb:

11. Press OK to create the DSN, and OK to close the ODBC administrator.

12. Run the DBMaint utility using the command exactly as shown here:

13. Complete the details as below:

14. You should get a window like this:

15. Select the option to Update licence table & option keys. Locate your licence file which has been sent to you, and after you have selected it you will get this message:

16. Close the DBMaint application.

17. Insert the dongle, you should notice that it is a recognised piece of hardware from the notification in the system try at the right hand side of the windows toolbar.

18. You should now be able to start StrataBugs by double-clicking the file sbugs.exe in the C:\SBUGS folder. The default username/password is SYSTEM/SYSTEM. If you are migrating from a previous installation of v1.8 on another system, then you will need to overwrite the file sbugs.mdb with your backup copy.

19. Create a shortcut on the desktop to point to c:\SBUGS\SBUGS.exe

Note: At this point you may need to install the Java Runtime Environment. This software is a requirement for StrataBugs v1.8 for the Updater and Organiser modules. The JRE is pre-installed on some systems; for others you will need to download and install it. Go to http://java.com and get the free java download. Once installed you should have a \java folder within "C:\Program Files (x86)". Note that if you end up with a copy in "C:\Program Files", this is the 64-bit version which will not work with StrataBugs (although it will not cause any problems for StrataBugs if it exists).

You must use Version 6 or later of java. The JRE on old StrataBugs CDs of version 1.4.2 is not compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Once the JRE is installed then the files which have a ".jar" file extension should be recognised a java applications, and you can proceed to the next step.

20. Double-click the file SBUpdate.jar in the Sbugs folder. You will get a window like this:

21. Press Download. You may get this message:

22. Then a series of these messages:

23. When this if finished, the installation is complete.

Periodically re-run SBUpdate.jar to install new updates (every month).
