Seven wonders of  the modern world.

What would someone from another time and technology list as the seven mostimpressive and significant aspects of this age?

Ancient travelers listed seven of the most famous sites of their time; the hanginggardens of Babylon, the pyramids of Egypt, the mausoleum in Asia minor, thetemple of Artemis, the colossus statue, Zeus statue and the lighthouse at

Alexandria. These seven wonders were essential sites for any ancient tourist more than

2,000 years ago. Now let s suppose an ancient traveler appeared in our time, and begun to write a guide to the thoughts and accomplishments of the 21stcentury. Surely skyscrapers, bridges/dams, automobiles, and electricity would

impress him. But a deeper look at what modern man has done would revealsome significant things:

First wonder.

Man has been to the moon, circled the earth countless times and put thousandsof satellites into orbit. An ancient traveler would be impressed by modern spaceexploration. Despite space exploration, the traveler would discover that modern

world still has this nagging thought:

I wonder why man exists?

Second wonder.

Few things are as awesome as a nuclear explosion. It is characterized by hugerelease of energy. The ancient visitor might wonder, and rightly so, why we have

so many of these bombs. The technological marvel of weaponry, he woulddiscover, has led to a second question:

I wonder whether there will be a nuclear war?

Third wonder.

This has being called an information age. Scientific knowledge doubled in the

decade of the 1950 s and has quadrupled each 10 years since. By usingcomputers and satellites, the knowledge can be shared within seconds. But thesearch for more scientific knowledge appears to be bypassing some of the realneeds of humanity. And what is known isn't always used. Sexually transmitted

diseases can be prevented- but many are unwilling to do so. Most peopleconsciously or subconsciously know that drug abuse is harmful, yet many abuse

drugs. Why isn t knowledge being used to prevent problems? Here s the third wonder:

I wonder why humanity can   t solve its problems?

Fourth wonder.

Modern medical practices would flabbergast anyone from past ages. Imagine

how preposterous it might seem to cut a man s chest open, remove the heart, put in another heart, and have him awaken and continue to live! Hearttransplants are not yet common and probably never will be. The far commonscene is that people die because of heart disease, or cancer, or a disease doctorscan do nothing about.

The wonder waiting behind the scenes is this: Why don   t people take care of their hearts in the first place?

Fifth wonder.

An ancient traveler might ponder, and so do many today, why some live incomfort and convenience while others suffer. Some people live by a meager

monthly income of 3,000/-, while the house rents for others are above 100,000/-This contrast brings us the fifth wonder of modern world:

I wonder why people can   t eliminate suffering and misery?

Sixth wonder.

The pursuit of pleasure and entertainment is a large part of modern economy. Many people just want to have fun - a never-ending stream of excitingactivities. The average lifespan of any Kenyan is composed of whining anddining, watching TV especially on weekends. Despite the availability of

entertainment, few people are truly happy. They in someway or another, think

I wonder what I should be doing with my life?

Seventh wonder.

Last in our list of surprises for our traveler is international co-operation. Nationsco-operate in military alliances, international trade and political organizations.

Nations try to solve problems through negotiation. Despite remarkableachievements, modern man still doubts whether the planet will have peace:

I wonder if the world will become a better place?

These are the seven moral wonders posed of modern time. Answersto such issues are available-surprisingly in a very old book-THE

BIBLE.
