• Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide.

• And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

• A single severe storm can cause billions of dollars in property damages as well as many deaths

• This section discusses three types of severe storms and their causes

1. Thunderstormsa) Thermal instability occurs during the

development of a thunderstorm b) A thunderstorm is a storm that generates

lightning and thunder. Thunderstorms frequently produce gusty winds, heavy rain, and hail.

c) A thunderstorm may be produced by a single cumulonimbus cloud and influence only a small area.

Page 4: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

A. Occurrence of thunderstormsa) At any give time there are an estimated 2000

thunderstorms in progress on Earthb) The greater numbers occurs in the tropics where

warmth, plentiful moisture, and instability are common atmospheric conditions

c) About 45,000 thunderstorms takes place each dayd) More than 16 million occur annually around the

worlde) The united states experiences about 100,000

thunderstorms each year, most frequently in Florida

Page 5: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

B. Development of thunderstormsa) Thunderstorms form when, humid air rises in

an unstable environment. The development of a thunderstorm usually goes through 3 stages

1. Cumulus stagea) During the cumulus stage, strong updrafts, or

upward movements of air, supply moist air.

b) Each new serge of air rises higher than the last and causes the cloud to grow vertically

Page 6: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

2. Mature Stagea) Usually within an hour of the initial updraft, the

mature stage begins.

b) At this point in development of the thunderstorm, the amount and size of the precipitation is too great for the updrafts to support so heavy precipitation is released

c) This is the most active stage with gusty winds, lightning, heavy precipitation, and sometimes hail are produced during this stage

Page 7: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

3.Dissipating stagea) Eventually, downdrafts, or downward movements

of air, dominate throughout the cloudb) This final stage is the dissipating stagec) During this stage, the cooling effect of the falling

precipitation and the flowing in of colder air from high above cause the storm to die down

d) The life span of a single cumulonimbus cell within a thunderstorm is only about an hour or two. As the storm moves, however, fresh supplies of warm, humid air generate new cells to replace those that are scattering

1. Tornadoes a) Tornadoes are violent windstorms that take the form

of a rotating column of air called a vortex. The vortex extends downward from a cumulonimbus cloud all the way to the ground

b) Some tornadoes consist of a single vortex. But within many stronger tornadoes, smaller vortexes rotate within the main funnel.

c) Smaller vortexes explain occasional observations of tornado damage in which one building or totally destroyed, while another one, just 10 to 20 meters away, suffers little damage

Page 10: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

A. Occurrence and development of tornadoesa) Most tornadoes form in association with severe

thunderstorms1.Mesocyclone

a) is a vertical cylinder of rotating air that develops in the updraft of a thunderstorm b) the formation of this large vortex begins as strong winds high up in the atmosphere cause winds lower in the atmosphere to rollc) once the air is completely vertical, the Mesocyclone is well establishedd) few mesocyclones produce tornadoes

B. Tornado intensity Pressures within some tornadoes have been estimated to be as much as 10% lower than pressures outside of the stormThe lower pressure within the tornado causes air near the ground to rush into a tornado from all directions. As the air streams inward, it spirals upward around the coreTo determine the intensity, the Fajita scale is used.Because tornado winds are difficult to measure, a rating on this scale is usually determined by assessing the worst damage produced by a storm

C. Tornado Safetya) The storm prediction center (SPC) monitors

different kinds of severe weatherb) Their mission is to provide timely and accurate

forecasts and watches for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes

c) Tornado watches warns people to the possibility of tornadoes in a specified area for a particular time period

d) A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has actually been sighted in an area or is indicated by weather radar

Hurricanes• Its amazing that a region with warm breezes, steady

temps, heavy but brief tropical storms are the normal but create yet the most violent storms on Earth

• Whirling tropical cyclones that produce sustained winds of at least 119 kilo. per hour are known in the U.S. as hurricanes

• In other parts of the world these are known as cyclones, typhoons, and tropical cyclones

Page 14: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

Continued…• Regardless of their name these are the most powerful

storms on earth• At sea, they can generate 15-meter waves capable of

destruction hundreds of kilo. away• If a hurricane hits land, strong winds and extensive

flooding can cause billions of dollars in damage and great loss of life

• Hurricanes are becoming a growing threat because more and more people are living and working near coasts

A. Occurrence of hurricanesa) Most hurricanes form between about 5 and 20

degrees north and south latitude

b) The North Pacific has the greatest number of hurricanes, averaging 20 per year

c) The coastal regions of the southern and eastern U.S. experience fewer than 5 hurricanes, an average, per year

d) A storm is a hurricane if the spiraling air has sustained winds of at least 119 kilo. per hour

Page 16: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

B. Development of hurricanesa) Hurricanes develop most often in the late summer

when water temperatures are warm enough to provide the necessary heat and moisture to the air

b) A hurricane is a heat engine that is fueled by the energy given off when quantities of water vapor condense

c) The doughnut-shaped wall that surrounds the center of the storm is the eye wall

d) Here the greatest wind speeds and heaviest rainfall occur

e) Surrounding the eye wall are curved bands of clouds that trail away from the center of the storm

f) At the very center of the storm is the eye

Page 17: Severe Storms 20.3. Severe weather has a fascination that everyday weather doesn’t provide. And example is a jagged lightning bolt can be an awesome sight

Continued…

f) At the very center of the storm is the eye

g) This well known feature is a zone where precipitation ceases and winds subsides

h) The air within the eye gradually descends and heats by compression, making it the warmest part of the storm

C. Hurricane intensity a) The intensity of a hurricane is described using the

Saffir-Simpson scaleb) The most devastating damage from a hurricane is

caused by storm surgesc) A storm surge is a dome of water about 65 to 80

kilometers wide that sweeps across the coast where a hurricane’s eye moves onto land

d) A hurricane weakens when it moves over cool ocean waters that cannot supply adequate heat and moisture

e) Intensity also drops when storms move over land because there is not sufficient moisture

f) Also, when a hurricane reaches a location where the airflow aloft is unfavorable, it will die out
