NQA Chapter OK871

Fiber Artists of Oklahoma (FAO) is an organization that pro-motes any artist in Oklahoma that works with fiber. This can be anything from weaving to paper to dolls to baskets and of course, to quilts. Every year FAO showcases the best of the best fiber art-works by obtaining a national juror to select pieces for a show called , “Fiberworks.”

FAO approached EQG to become a sponsor. I am very ex-cited and honored that the Edmond Quilt Guild will be presenting a monetary award for the Best in Quilting. This award will be selected by this year's judge, Jane Dunnewold. This will be the first time an official award will be given for quilting.

Fiberworks will be held at Living Arts of Tulsa, 307 E. Brady in Tulsa. The opening reception (open to the public) will be held on June 3rd from 5 to 9 p.m.

The show will last until June 19. www.fiberartistsok.org. Tulsa is only down the pike! Let's make a showing of support. The show will be in Oklahoma City next year.

The National Quilt Day Sew-in that was held March 19 was a success. We had 24 people that sewed, watched demos, ate pizza and visited. It was a really fun time and my special ironing board was a topic of conversation. A special thank you to Don Lusk, Becki Davis, Becky Beierle and me, Alice Kellogg, for doing demos. Can-dice Graham worked very hard on a Loving Touch display.

If you missed the Sew-in, then for heaven's sake, don't miss the upcoming Studio Tour. Mark your calendars now for April 30th.

Until next time....Happy Stitching!

Vice-President’s Report – Becky Beierle We had a great meeting in March with Donna Lynn Thomas as our guest speaker. She spoke on color and emphasized three major points of design to help us create beautiful quilts. The first and most obvious, being color or the hue of your fabric. The second being the value of your fabric, the light or darkness. And lastly, the scale of the print. Donna showed us some great examples of good color selections. While we as individuals may prefer one color over another, she gave us several good recipes to start to explore other color combinations. Right on the heels of that meeting we celebrated National Quilt Day and I want to thank everyone for coming out to share in our play day! Don’t forget that our Nursery Rhyme Challenge quilts are due next month! I look forward to seeing your beautiful and creative exploits. Still Stitching, Becky Beierle

Attention Guild Members!

It’s time to start planning the EQG Quilt Show for 2011, and. . we need a quilt show chairman! The hard part of being the chairman is finding a venue. That has already been done. The rest is being organized and keeping the "underlings" on track. After two shows, we have learned alot and all this knowledge will be passed onto you. You will not be alone. You will have a committee to help you and we have some volunteers with quilt show experience on that committee.

So, step forward and be the top dog. We need you! Call Alice at 348-2233

Did you come to the March meeting? Donna Thomas was great! She brought 3 – count ‘em – 3 giant suitcases full of quilts to show. We should all feel much more confident now when we go to choose fabrics for our quilts.

In April our guest will be Debbie Maddy. Her lecture is titled “No Diamonds/No Y Seams.” She will also be teaching the workshop “Labyrinth” that day (April 19). It’s not too late to sign up for the workshop. You can see a picture of the quilt at http://www.calicocarriage.com/ . The cost of the workshop is $25 and the supply list is available here. http://tinyurl.com/6fb2wpt. Reserve your space now!

The subject of our May program will be “How to Shop Hop Like a Pro.” The Road to Okla-homa Shop Hop is coming up June 9-10 and we’ll be giving you lots of hints on how to make your hop a winning experience. Whether you’ve hopped before or not there will be some not to be missed information.

In June we will be having our annual guild picnic. Since we cannot have our regular meeting room during the month of June the picnic will be held on the grounds of Sooner Quilts. http://soonerquilts.com/ The shop will be open that night so be sure to bring some extra spending money along with a lawn chair and a side dish or dessert to share. More info later.

Our October speaker will be Mickey Depre. http://www.mdquilts.com/ Her lecture will be “Colorific Quilts” and her workshop will be “Colorforms for Grownups – Designing your own fabric.” The fee for this workshop will also be $25 plus you will need to purchase a $17 kit. The supply list can be found here. http://tinyurl.com/6j2wjax Brenda Esslinger

Things are looking up. We only have five e-mail addresses for which e-mail is ‘bouncing’ (i.e., it is not being delivered). Here’s the list of y’all that aren’t getting the newsletters: Jo Bald-ing, Connie Begnaud, Mira Langley, Leslie Reese, Terri Finnell. I have the latest information given to me by Membership so perhaps there is a firewall in your system that is blocking it. However, you may want to verify your email address with Becki Davis, at the next meeting just to be sure. Now here is another opportunity to think about volunteering. My term as your newsletter editor and person responsible for all things related to communications is up at the end of this year. It is hard for me to believe that the two-year term will be up in eight months, but it will. And we will need someone to replace me. The requirements for the position are that one have a reasonable command of the English language (you do not have to be a Pulitzer prize winner), be fairly computer literate, and willing to learn some new tricks, which I will pass on. Everything has been set up; it’s just churning it out once a month, which takes about 3-4 hours. It’s fun, you’ll be part of the guild’s board, and you’ll get to meet lots of wonderful, wonderful, folks. If you have any interest, some time between now and next fall, please let me or Alice know. You’ll endear yourself to us forever! Nancy Forrest

Kudos!!! Congrats to Beyond the Block! The Beyond the Block small group made a group piece that was their showcase piece for the Festival of Quilts that we had last July. It is based on an art installation by Dale Chihuly that can be seen at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art in down-town Oklahoma City. The Quilters' Guild of East Texas requested the quilt for a special exhibit at their March 25 & 26th show that coincides with Tyler's Azalea Trail. The small group felt pleased and honored that another guild would exhibit their quilt. Great work. girls.! By the way, if you want to see the Chihuly exhibit, I saw on the news that they are going to take it down for about a year to clean it, so contact the museum to see if it is still on display .

Charlotte Hickman and Judy Elliot both had two quilts each accepted for the NQA Quilt Show in Columbus for 2011. Charlotte also had a quilt accepted for the AQS show in Lancaster this year. Congratulations to you both!

Membership – Becki Davis

Hope your having a great month. At the March meeting we had 101 in attendance. Our current membership is 146 members.

I would like to welcome our two new members, Amber Rose and Donna Shinn.

If you know someone who had not rejoined, please contact them and encourage them to join us in all the great programs that are scheduled for this year.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: Anyone planning to enter a quilt in the quilt show of 2012, will have to be a member in 2011 and 2012. Please spread the word so this isn't an issue next year. I would also like to thank Becky Sebring, Bonnie Bowman, and all the other members who have been bringing door prizes. They are much appreciated!

Happy Quiilting

Donation Blocks Needed—Just One Star Project Moda fabrics is participating in a Quilts of Valor program coordinated by Marianne Fons. Has a line of fabric and kits, created by Minick & Simpson, benefiting this program available in stores April 2011.

Just how much of an impact has the Quilts of Valor Foundation made? As of February, 2011 there have been over 37,000 quilts awarded to service members/veterans.

The following link will take you to information and pattern for Just One Star Project, http://www.unitednotions.com/LA_just_one_star.pdf

Sew. . .Who Sews?

Good question. Sometimes the best laid plans. . .well, you know the rest. I had a new member (Amber Rose) lined up to feature this month. Took her picture with my trusty iPhone.

Then, a few days before I really started thinking about writing the article, my dear husband, helpful soul that he tries to be, offered to update my phone’s operating system. Not feeling like messing with the update myself, I told him to go ahead. An hour later when I got my phone back, not only were there no photos, but there were no phone num-bers in my phone book and no appointments I’d placed on my calendar.

Now this isn’t the first time something terrible has hap-pened with my iPhone and my never-will-be techie spouse. When he first set them up and saved information from both phones to our computer, his cancelled mine out so I had to start from scratch. I thought that problem had been re-solved when he offered to do this update.

So if sometimes you get chicken and sometimes you get feathers, this is your month for feathers. I am hopeful that there will be no snafus next month and, instead of the quizzical mark you see on this page you will see a new member’s smiling face!

Do you own a polyester, double knit quilt?

Ah, those heavier than heavy quilts that were created in the ‘60s and ‘70s—liifting one was like a routine for a weight training class! Well, Gail Van Horsen of Prescott Valley Arizona, is looking for those polyester quilts. Gail is studying to become a certified quilt appraiser through the NQA program. She has a love of quilts from the 1968 to 1980 era, the double knit years and is hoping to better document this period. She would love photos and any information you can share about your polyester quilts or unfinished blocks from that era. You can reach her at [email protected]
