SGM NEWS No. 9 2016

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. And God said: “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Millions of years later, we at SGM took it upon ourselves to challenge the work of God. We said: “Let there be color”. These words shook the planet and gave rise to unprecedented reds, greens and blues.

Let the Color Revolution begin!

Brazilian singer-songwriter Luan Santana recently

released his fourth live album and DVD Acústico,

which - according to its title - was recorded

acoustically. The recordings took place in Quanta

Studios in São Paulo, with a retro setting and

dress code leading you back to the Broadway

60s. Shortly after the release, several of the

singles reached the top of the Brazil Hot 100

Airplay chart.

For this production, as for previous Luan Santana

productions, Spectrum Design e Iluminação

supplied a complete technology solution. LED

products from SGM assisted in conveying the old

theatre style with a total of 30 P-5 wash lights, 80

X-5 LED strobes and 40 SixPack blinders.

The SixPacks were mounted in the grand upper

façade, giving the marquee the effect and look

of the halogen emulating lamps, whilst offering

the brightness and low power consumption of

the LED light sources. Six outputs of 40W colour

mixing RGBA LEDs per unit (a total of 240 LEDs),

each individually controllable, added to the

creative tools of lighting designer Marcos Olivio

and production designer Ludmila Machado.

Ludmila Machado explains: “The construction

of this sign was very complex. It was basically a

large backlight LED tape, with the SGM SixPacks

drawing attention all around as a scenic element.

The letters of Luan Santana’s name were each in a

light box. The title Acústico was made with neon.

All was operated by MA Console.” This massive

façade weighed around 4 tons, generating quite

a trial for the stagecraft team.

The P-5 wash lights were used for a cyclorama

wall and for audience light. “A cyclorama was

positioned at the back of the stage area. This

feature was hidden by large black velvet panels,

which, at certain times, were lifted up to reveal

the cyclorama illuminated by P-5s. The wash

lights thus contributed to a colorful background

for the choreography of the triangle patterns”,

says Ludmila Machado.

The DVD was directed by the talented Joana

Mazzucchelli.

On the 9th of August 2015, the renowned Polish rock band Skaldowie gave a big concert in the city of Gdów to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The national broadcasting corporation, TVP, organized the event and a live crowd of 15,000 attended the outdoor venue.

For the impressive stage setup, no less than 100 SixPack blinders and 50 P-5 wash lights from SGM were integrated into the light design. Lighting designer, Sebastian Pachciarek, explains that he chose the P-5s due to their many advantages such as powerfulness and viewing angle. He used the SixPacks as wall LEDs, and for this

purpose, he particularly emphasizes the ease of combining a large amount of fixtures. He then adds; “The fact that both types of fixtures are IP65-rated was quite important – especially for concerts under the cloud”. Finally, he underlines that both the P-5s and the SixPacks performed flawlessly.

When asked if he would consider using SGM lights again, Pachciarek states that he really likes these lamps and he will definitely consider using them again. Luckily, he has easy access to them, as he cooperates with TSE Group, a Polish rental company that has a considerable SGM stock.

Recently, the National Theatre organized a unique fundraising

gala evening, Fast Forward, with the goal of raising money for

the NT Future foundation, which been established to ensure

the theatre’s future by providing new facilities for audiences,

artists and young people.

The venue was the largest of the National’s three theatres,

the Oliver Theatre, where the dinner took place at the stage

leaving the remaining auditorium free for the surprises of the

evening, which included performances from Damon Albarn,

James Graham, Patrick Marber as well as the Southbank

Sinfonia and the London Community Gospel Choir.

Alongside the team from National Theatre worked London-

based lighting specialists, White Light, with the support from

event production company, Blueprint, who supplied LED

tubes from SGM.

The full kit provision from White Light incorporated new LED

equipment, which had previously never been used at the

National Theatre.

Blueprint’s Chris Morgan explains: “The inspiration for

incorporating the tubes came from designers at the theatre

seeing them in use in the play The Hard Problem.” Earlier this

year, Blueprint supplied the 2-metre pixel tubes for this Tom

Stoppard play, which ran at the National’s Dorfman Theatre,

where they were deployed to form an exceptional pulsating

sculpture in a brain science institute.

Based on the enthusiasm for the 3D effect of the LT-200

tubes combined with the great cause, Blueprint were quick

to reach a decision. “We donated SGM LT-200 LED tubes

to the National Theatre for their fundraising event, and we

were very pleased with the creative implementation and to

support an important cultural heritage”, says Morgan.

The 60 SGM LT-200 vertical tubes were driven by 22 SGM

ILDs, Installation LED Drivers, run by a Madrix Media

Server programmed by Blueprint. The utilisation was quite

extraordinary as they were installed onto a circular truss

which flew in and out above the audience for a captivating

circus performance.

National’s Lighting Director, James Farncombe, rounds off

informing that they “have received excellent feedback about

the lighting for this event”, while the additional positive news

is that the £80 million target was nearly reached.

The combination of electronic music, icy décor, powerful architectural projections and a program featuring the best local and international DJs, makes Igloofest at Montreal’s Old Port the place to be during January and February each year.

This year, for the 10th edition, 120,000 music lovers braved the harsh Canadian winter for four consecutive weekends, to join the largest outdoor party in Montreal. Lighting Designer Karl Gaudreau of design firm 4U2C in Montreal, created the beautiful lighting scenery which, for this particular edition, evolved around a backdrop design element of painted shipping containers, also functioning as shelters for people attending the event.

4U2C deployed luminaires from SGM for the first time, which turned out in their favor, as the biggest challenge at Igloofest is the weather, with heavy fluctuations in snow conditions and temperatures. This year, the temperature ranged between +10˚ and -30˚ Celsius. Additionally, the gear had to endure the elements of the outdoors for long periods of time. Therefore, the SGM LED equipment deployed was a perfect fit. Le Groupe Spectre Sonore supplied rental company Solotech with six G-Spot and six G-Profile moving heads, and compact G-1 Beam moving heads. Solotech also installed 55 X-5 white LED strobes. Lighting Designer Karl Gaudreau said:

“The main concept was to make winter a part of the design, creating a mind-blowing experience for the crowd. Therefore, the sea containers were all painted white and the lighting design supported this vision.” The G-Spots and G-Profiles were used for the main stage outrigged from the containers. Marc-André Turgeon, Sales Representative for SGM Light in Canada, said: “Not having to rig domes or enclosures was a huge plus, as they would have blocked the view and given us unwanted reflections. Another issue is that in extremely cold weather the inflatable domes are very hard to use as they crack and break. Using G-Spots and G-Profiles made the use of domes redundant” The new and ground-breaking G-1 Beam had its debut in Canada at Igloofest, operated by 4U2C, and was also put to the harshest environment test

which it passed with flying colors. Gaudreau said:“For the G-1 Beams, the idea was to make snow trees of light close to the crowd. Again no domes were needed and the small and compact size of the moving head made it blend in very well with the design.” The powerful X-5 strobes were deployed for the main staging area as washes and blinders, greatly appreciated by the lighting team due to their size, output and features. As the only SGM fixture at the event without IP65-rating, the equipment provider Solotech had designed enclosures for them, making the X-5 a true workhorse at Igloofest. After five full weeks in the freezing Canadian winter, the new G-1 Beam proved just as reliable and robust as the rest of the SGM product portfolio and underlined the significance of working with a worry-free LED luminaire.

SGM’s ground-breaking IP65-rated LED solutions featured heavily across this year’s vast Glastonbury Festival site. Starting at the iconic Pyramid Stage, a wide range of powerful washes, LED strobes and dynamic 3D effects cascaded down to a number of smaller stages where they performed long duty cycles flawlessly over the four days.

G-Spots for The Who

While 14 of the G-Spots, provided by HSL, graced the main stage (seven on each PA wing), elsewhere, the scramble was on to secure inventory, in particular, for the popular and award-winning P-5 wash light.

Main stage lighting was supplied by Neg Earth, and with The Who headlining, their LD Tom Kenny, had nothing but positives to say about G-Spot. “I was impressed with its power, and the way it fought through everything else. I also loved the colour and they matched the other fixtures well.”

Far superior P-5 light for Ribbon Tower

Enlightened Lighting’s Simon Marcus was one who drew on the P-5s to light the landmark Ribbon Tower — a beacon that can be seen right across the site. He praised the saturated colours produced by the ultra-efficient wash light, deploying 24 P-5

RGBW in pairs on the ground to uplight the full 29 metres of the tower and eight P-5 TW (Tunable White) washes, subbed in from Vortex Lighting by Neg Earth, on the Minaret style top.

“The P-5s were sufficiently powerful to fire all the way up to the top and we could change the whole tower and snap the colours instantly from warm saturated reds to cold blues with a spin chase. As people use it to navigate from it was important it was lit through 360°,” he said. “The P-5 is far superior to the old discharge lights used previously — the colour saturation is better and in terms of usability it’s a lot less intrusive. The SGM products were brilliant in every respect, and lovely to work with.”

High output and flicker-free solutions

Over at the John Peel Stage, Imax Lighting’s Gary Churchill brought in a further nine P-5 RGBW washes — part of the floor package for La Roux’s set to meet the rider from their lighting designer, Andy Liddle. These were used both for lighting their backdrop and as floor cans on the edges of the risers.

Another company from the region that has been associated with Glastonbury since 2007 is Alister Pook’s SWG Events. This year, their lighting manager Ben Perrin specified eight SGM X-5 strobes and four P-2 wash lights for the Park Stage, with the P-2 units used to uplight the Park’s new pillars. “The design team was ecstatic with the results,” he said. And for BBC Introducing, Perrin specified 12 SGM Q-2 W white fixtures and six SGM P-2 fixtures, adding: “I wanted a versatile strobe / eye candy light with a small footprint which at the same time could deliver as much colour as possible.”

“The P-2 provided the answer — in fact everyone was amazed at the amount of output the fixture produced, with incredible smooth even colours.”

The fixtures also met the BBC’s requirements for a flicker-free LED solution. “The Q-2 W, with the 12 individual cells per unit, I knew would produce some unique effects, and the fact I could put so many units into a venue without affecting the overall power consumption was a major bonus.”

As a result, SWG Events now own all three SGM products. “They left such a good impression that we had to buy them,” was Perrin’s rationale.

Exceeding every expectation

Finally, La Pussy Parlure, overseen by SWG Events’ Alister Pook, featured further P-2 washes and SGM’s LS-3.75 video screen. “The venue designer wanted lots of coloured light but hidden fixtures to create atmosphere,” said Perrin. “We put four P-2 units in the king poles to illuminate their logo, along with eight washing the room and four to create a glow behind the slatted walls.” The result was a thoroughly satisfying outing for SWG. “Many venues have requesting the same products and designs again for the future,” Perrin confirmed. “The SGM products exceeded every expectation we had. Many touring lighting designers were blown away by them and the house engineers also loved the ease of rigging the fixtures with great little features such as the retractable safety bond point. SGM provided us with the tools to have the most successful Glastonbury Festival yet.”

And with further P-5s featured in the Circus area and for Greenpeace’s Visitor Experience (and elsewhere on the site) there is no question that SGM left a powerful imprint over the Worthy Farm festival site in 2015. Concluded SGM UK’s Ian Kirby, “This is one of the largest deployments of SGM products at a single event and again demonstrated the fantastic impact that can be achieved when these ground-breaking fixtures are placed in the hands of creatives.”

Two revving and rocking CarFest family festivals in UK raises funds for BBC Children in Need, and the music stages were packed with SGM luminaires.

Inspired by BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Chris Evans, last three year’s festivals of cars, cake and music extravaganzas has raised more than £3.5 million for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK; a figure which will grow significantly after this year’s donations are included.

CarFest North took place in Cheshire July 31 to August 2, while CarFest South was scheduled for August 28-30 in Hampshire.

For both occasions, LED lighting equipment from SGM played an important role for the headliners. The equipment package consisted of 18 G-Spot moving heads, 20 SixPack blinders, 12 P-5 wash lights and 12 P-2 compact wash lights, 18 Q-7 flood blind strobes and 16 Q-2 W offering a staggering 26,000 lumen cool white light.

Blackburn professional lighting provider, HSL Group Holdings Ltd, and technical production services supplier, SWG Events Ltd, - supported by SGM UK, supplied the full SGM kit.

The SGM lighting package made effective impact at the three-day event at CarFest North for bands such as Primal Scream, Joss Stone and Will Young, while Paloma Faith and Take That took the LED stage at CarFest South.

Cirkus Dannebrog is a circus with much history

dating back to the second half of the 19th century

and thus holds an important role in the Danish

circus traditions. However, this circus is following

the technological developments and hence using

the latest innovations within lighting.

Since 2001, Cirkus Danneborg has been focusing

and working with lighting as an important element

for the audience experience in relation to artists,

animals and the overall circus tent atmosphere.

Lighting designer Liza Van Der Voorn has been

working with the circus troupe for the last three

seasons, designing and programming light for a

circus solely deploying LED technology.

As a new acquisition, Liza Van Der Voorn has

introduced six SGM G-Spot moving heads to the

circus lighting rig. She is very enthusiastic about

these luminaires, their quality and flawless

operation, night after night, arriving to a new city

each day.

She explains: “With only 20 minutes to set up and 10 minutes to dismount the big circular lighting rig, I was looking for a reliable moving head for the summer tour. Only one lamp was to my liking: the G-Spot!”

The G-Spot is especially excellent for circus

installations due to its IP65 rating. Besides being

waterproof, the IP65 rating and dehumidifier also

eliminates the accumulation of other ‘foreign’

and damaging particles such as dust, dirt and

sand, which are unavoidable elements in a circus

environment. Thus, these features save time

and costs for maintenance and cleaning, while

prolonging the lifetime of the fixture.

The six moving heads are now part of an existing

rig of 20-30 other LED laps, setting spotlight on

the performers’ acts. They were supplied by

Matrix Sales ApS by Urs Friis-Alstrup.

A contributory factor in opting again for a LED

solution was naturally the significant savings in

energy, and especially savings on diesel as the

circus often utilises their own generators when

travelling across the country.

Jaguar celebrated their 80th anniversary with an

unprecedented stunt. Their new performance SUV,

F-PACE, defied gravity in a Guinness world record-breaking

360 degree loop on a 19 meter ramp. Driving the F-PACE

was legendary stunt driver Terry Grant, showcasing the

cars lightweight design, agility, sports car speed and

performance.

The G-Spot LED moving head was selected as lighting

element for this video. It is simply perfect for these

outdoor tasks as it is IP65-rated. No domes are required

and the brightness of this maintenance-free moving head

is extreme.

Production Resource Group (PRG) supplied the G-Spots to

Melodifestivalen is Sweden’s national contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest, where their winner candidate is found. For the stage setup, lighting designer, Fredrik Jönsson implemented both X-5 strobes and P-5 wash lights. Jönsson here explains the effects he wished to achieve using these two specific types of LED fixtures from SGM:

“The X-5s were scattered around the lighting rig downstage to add glitter and bursts that would penetrate the air through the set and give more energy in the camera shots. We mainly used the segment feature with fast randomly chases to add that extra razzmatazz during choruses and such.”

“The P-5s were brought in for a specific act to be used as a strong color signature and as uplight through a glass floor for a custom made transparent podium. They were purely used in a strong and vibrant red that became a very strong signature look for that act. The band and the creative group really liked the P-5s for that particular song.”

Jönsson is indeed an experienced LD, who has carried out the lighting design for Melodifestivalen on tour for all of its now 14-year lifetime with 444 songs in total on his resume. When asked if he would consider using SGM fixtures in other applications, he replies: "Love the P-5s. It was my first time using them and I will for sure specify them again in future projects.” He chose them due to their output and great colors: “I also like the actual physical look of the luminaire and it was very suitable for the mood in the act we used them in”. He also highlights the fact that the SGM fixtures are LED as an important aspect in terms of output and power consumption:

“I don’t have unlimited electrical power access on the tour, so the X-5s keep the amps down and give me the punch I need.”

The X-5 strobes were specified for their ability to do chases in segments within the luminaire. Jönsson describes them as being very powerful: “A key feature when you want an effect to punch through everything else lit on that stage. The levels can be very intense at times to say the least,” Jönsson exclaims. He continues: “The strobes were rigged so that fast chases from side to side were extremely efficient and gave us great bang for the buck. Most of the acts and crowds really loved those energy boosts.”

The popular Swedish music event ran over a six-week period with six live broadcasts from February to mid-March. The finals were held in the Friends Arena in Stockholm, where approx. 30,000 spectators attended the show and 3,770.000 followed the TV broadcast, whereas the semifinals attracted 7,000-8,000 live spectators and approximately 3,100.000 television viewers. Adding to that, there were also well-attended runner-up shows.

The 2016 tour will be the 15th anniversary of Melodifestivalen on tour – as it will be Fredrik Jönsson’s 15th year as part of the crew and at least 28 new contesting songs will need a creative lighting design. With Måns Zelmerlöw’s popular song “Heroes”, Sweden ended up winning the international Eurovision Song Contest this year, and they will therefore be the host country for the big event next year.

SGM’s Q-7 provides overall versatility for TZN tour

Lighting designer Giovanni Pinna is the man behind the light setting of Tiziano Ferro’s (TZN) latest indoor tour in second half of 2015. He opted for the SGM Q-7 multi-purpose LED luminaire even before truly realizing the full potential of the fixture.

The popular Italian singer-songwriter within the genres of Latin, Pop and R&B, and known to sing also in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese obtaining his current sales figures of 15 million records worldwide, toured the Italian stadiums during the summer with huge success. Subsequently, Tiziano Ferro decided to do an

indoor tour, maintaining the very strong concept of the video graphics dominating his show. Requiring a totally new lighting rig to support the video screen setup, production company Live Nation called upon lighting designer Giovanni Pinna to join the team adding his strong portfolio of developing quality designs.

With a specific target in mind to create a “what-you-hear-is-what-you-see” experience for the audience, Giovanni Pinna has always had a strong vision for his designs. “Building the show with overnight programming is probably my favourite moment. It’s a very personal and

intimate moment – just me and my rig…very romantic!” he grins.

For this tour Pinna needed a lot of audience lighting, strobe effects and additional colour power on stage. “So with 44 Q-7 very well spread on the rig, I achieved exactly what I was looking for. It’s a versatile fixture that gives you a lot and takes much less power compared to classic strobes. Colourwise, it blends really well with the LED wash fixtures in the rig,” he reports.

The many Q-7 flood/strobe/blinders were integrated as audience diffusers, as strobes and as floor lights for the band’s back, front and sides as well as washers for the stage. “I like the overall versatility of the Q-7, but also the great colour quality and control – especially when it

comes to white, which is the most difficult field for LED fixtures.”

Leading rental company Agora from L’Aquila supplied the Q-7s from their inventory, completely satisfying Pinna’s needs. “Before starting to program, I probably didn’t imagine I would have used them so much in the show,” he says adding that he definitely also considered the huge powers savings by deploying the SGM fixtures compared to traditional strobes or tungsten audience blinders.

Giovanni Pinna can now continue on to the next lighting adventure backed by a constant positive support from both management and production of the TZN tour.

600 SGM LED Graphic Tubes perform on Britain’s Got Talent

LT-100/LT-200 x 600 pcs

SGM’s LT-100/LT-200 LED graphic tubes achieved great stage presence at the 2015 edition of Britain’s Got Talent; a popular TV show invented by Simon Cowell, who is also part of the judging panel.

The fixtures really ensured a vibrant and dynamic setting for the skilled contestants. Besides forming the large-scale curves with zip effects on each side of the stage, the 3D effect tubes were also used as a decorative gate in the finale, beautifully encircling the talent contestants.

The British production company, Blueprint, supplied the LED tubes. Over time, they have executed several very creative and successful LT-100/LT-200 installations.

From May 25-31, the 2015 edition of the talent show broadcasted from the Fountain Studios in Wembley on British national TV. The viewing figures were sky-high; 7-9 million for the semi-finals, increasing to 12 million for the finale. Thus, making the show the runner-up as Britain’s most popular talent show, with The X Factor maintaining its 1st place.

SGM LED for Intimissimi on Ice

Award-winning Lighting Designer, Bruno Poet,

felt privileged and inspired when offered to work

in Verona Arena with the spectacular live show

Intimissimi On Ice. At the same, this was his first

opportunity to deploy SGM’s LED luminaires in his

creative design.

Show director, Francisco Negrin, describes the

elegant ice-skating show as “a generator of the

energy of shadows and light”. The two acts depict

very different aspects, where Act I starts with the

dark energy in violent and chaotic forms exploring

the dark sides of male/female relationships with

both loneliness and desire. The desire turns into

passionate lust and then into real love. Act II,

however, is about light, joy, playfulness culminating

in a celebrational finale.

For such an impressive and emotional show,

lighting played an essential role. And with a Lighting

Designer on board internationally recognised for

his lighting for large scale live performances, many

versatile effects were taken into use. Poet opted

for an SGM LED solution:

“These LED lights provided the most flexible

solution for the jobs I needed them to do. There

are no conventional fixtures that could have been

used in this way. I see it as choosing the best tool

for the job”.

Rental company, Musical Box, from Verona supplied

150 SGM RGBA SixPack LED blinders, containing

each six individually controllable 40 W outputs,

and 82 SGM P-5 RGBW wash lights, receiving the

Poet’s full recommendations for their handling of

the entire process.

The impressive facilities of Verona Arena demanded

for an extraordinary presentation while at the

same time providing some challenges as there is

no roof structure. Poet explained:

“It’s a technical challenge when you cannot

hang lights overhead, and have to protect all the

equipment from the rain. Another issue is dealing

with the ice and the projection - any light that

hits the surface of the ice kills the projection, and

any backlight reflects off the ice and blinds the

audience.”

Selecting lighting fixtures from SGM eliminated the

need for protecting the lights as they are IP65-

rated, which was one of the main reasons for the

designer to specify them for this show.

G-Spots for the 11th African Games in Brazzaville

Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo had the honour of celebrating the 11th edition of the African Games in September 2015, marking not only the 50th anniversary of the Games (held every four years) but also the return to Brazzaville, which hosted the very first edition back in 1965.

Organized by the African Union (AU), this multi-sports event drew in participants from 54 nations with a programme of 22 separate sports disciplines, plus two additional disability sports.

GL events Audiovisual, a subsidiary to GL events Group, was tasked with the exceptional closing ceremony of the Games. From design to production, the team was fully on guaranteeing top-quality service within sound, lighting and video. To achieve the best possible light installation, they selected 18 G-Spot LED moving heads from SGM with an IP65-rating.

Lighting Designer, Vincent Mongourdin, who worked closely together with show director Martin Arnaud, said:“Arnaud’s scenographic method was to place a cube balancing on its lowest vertex in a pool in the middle of the stadium, symbolizing the history, present and future of Congo, when the cube opens. The lighting concept behind was to make this cube become a piece of jewelry magnified by a concentric implementation. This called for a powerful light output in order to give the right impression of the cube floating on water as I worked with the water reflections."

This concept required the only moving head on the market able to provide a high output while operating in a humid environment and actually placed right next to a huge water screen. Therefore, the IP65-rated G-Spot was chosen. Mongourdin explained:“I must admit, I was attracted by its LED system. So we decided to place 18 G-Spots in the pool.”

Highly convincing IP65-rating

The G-Spot moving head is IP65-rated, making the use of domes redundant. By avoiding domes, the light output and contrast of the luminaire will remain unaffected and the projection will stay bright and powerful at all times.

Besides being protected against water and humidity, the G-Spot is also protected against sand, dust and the accumulation of other damaging particles, resulting in a prolonged lifetime of the unit and a significant reduction in maintenance resources, as only the outer luminaire requires occasional cleaning.

According to Alexandre Trapon, head of the technical lighting department, a brand new stadium was built for this particular occasion, in Brazzaville’s suburbs [Kintélé]. Right in the centre of the stadium, a huge removable cube was constructed. The purpose of the cube was to use each side to project video onto, culminating in the cube unfolding like flower petals. The cube was situated in a large pool with 10 cm of water surrounding it, which had to be highlighted. On top of this, a water curtain above the pool continuously sprayed water on the moving heads.

Even though Trapon knew in advance of the G-Spots’ IP65-rating, he was amazed to see them perform:“It is still very surprising to see these luminaires in such an environment. And realizing that none

of the units showed any problems, truly confirms that they are IP65-rated.

Besides this, the open-air arena in Brazzaville was hit by a sandstorm

just before the show. All other moving heads needed an internal

cleaning of lenses and electronic parts. The G-Spot just had an

external clean up and theywere ready to go!”

SGM P·5s breathelife into Art Zoneinstallation for

Roskilde Festival

Jakob Kvist, who is behind the light design on Art Zone, was on the lookout for a weatherproof wash light with deep saturated colors and high output for this installation. The SGM P-5 LED wash light met all of his demands.

Roskilde Festival 2015 had a popular new edition of its Art Zone success from last year. In an area of approximately 6,400 sq. m., located on the left side of the renowned Orange Stage and visited daily by 5,000-10,000 festivalgoers, Art Zone consisted of some very interesting architectural installations that were stunningly lit up.

The Dutch architect duo, Marco Zolos and Robbert van der Horst, once again carried out the design for Art Zone. The young aspiring Danish lighting designer, Jakob Kvist, subsequently added the powerful lighting expression.

The two architects’ conceptual idea behind Art Zone was a theme based on open and enclosed structures. Jakob wanted the light to reflect exactly these to opposites. Using LED light, he therefore designed the light to be welcoming to the guests in the three open structures. “It gave a sense of movement, inviting the guests to fool around and go silly. And it worked!” Jakob states. On the other hand, he worked with an inside-out solution for the

enclosed structures. Here he made sure the LED light came out intravenously from the gaps in the

structures, which gave them a more introvert look and feel.

His ambition was for the guests to embrace the light with the open and enclosed theme of the structures. In that sense, he wanted the light of the open structures to represent openness, happiness and movement, and the enclosed structures to represent reflectiveness, afterthought, consis-tency and perspective.

Jakob Kvist integrated 18 SGM P-5 LED wash lights into two of the installations. “I wanted to use the P-5 because of its superior abilities in utilizing a wash light. I wanted a weatherproof high output wash light with deep saturated colors. In that sense, the P-5 is everything you could wish for in a wash light,” he reflects and continues: “I would like to highlight the deep colors of the P-5. They are much richer than your normal RGB fixture. The white LED enables you to make beautiful pastel colors, and the fact that you can daisy chain the fixture, makes setting up and taking it down, very fast and convenient.” Since it was an outdoor installation in a festival environment, heavy rain or worse is what you can expect when the lights are standing outside for a whole week. Jakob therefore underlines that the P-5’s IP65-rating was a crucial feature, when he was selecting lighting fixtures for the Art Zone project. “We didn’t have any problems

with them, whatsoever,” he contentedly concludes.

As an extension of the successful lighting design project for the new forecourt at Ishøj Station (DK) and eastern part of the city centre, the municipality decided to complete the lighting for the city centre including the adjoining urban areas and a roundabout.

The lighting concept for the station forecourt is based on artistic interpretations of the element water which create a visual link to Ishøj’s maritime environment and to the Museum of Modern Art, Arken. Water being the creative starting point, is expressed in architectural light settings of colour tones and projected images that create narratives and a unique atmosphere.

In order to create a coherent lighting for the entire area, ÅF Lighting extended the lighting concept and assigned an element to each project area. Water for the station forecourt; Fire for the high facades of the city centre; Earth for the city park and Air for the bridges.

In accordance with the first part of the city centre illumination, the high facades were illuminated with SixPack and P-5 luminaires from SGM. The colour red was assigned once more as a reference to the element Fire as well as a contrast to the blue-white colour tones at the station. The fixtures excel in lumen output, lighting performance and design and were therefore the preferred choice for the lighting

solution. Different beam angles were combined to achieve an even and intensive lighting effect with minimum spill light and lighting pollution.

A special challenge was provided by the roundabout in front of the west entrance of the city centre. ÅF Lighting’s intention was to stage the roundabout with a watering motive similar to the ones used at the station forecourt. Due to the size of the roundabout a pole-based solution proved to be ineffective and would have had a negative visual impact on the appearance of the area, especially during daytime. The use of the several individual luminaries would furthermore have required the division of the projected image into smaller parts that needed to be joined perfectly in order to create a seamless watering projection.

Frederik W. Borello, Electrical- & Lighting Engineer: “We found a quite unusual solution to solve the challenge and placed a G-Spot luminaire 50 meters from the roundabout on the top of the 35 m high building, with the intention of creating a perfect, sharp and spectacular projection of 3 different water rings.”

To verify the solution ÅF Lighting, with support from SGM, carried out a test lighting that proved the G-Spot to be just the right fixture.

Frederik W. Borello: “The product was perfect due to its high IP rating (IP65) and its high efficient LED technology combined with a great optical system that allows optimal focus and zoom of the 3 projections. The colour blending of the multicolour LED is very uniform, and the projection has the same high quality as watering at the station

forecourt, where we used metal halide. The result is very satisfying.”

Franziska Bönecke, Lighting Designer and Project Manager: “The beam throw from the top of the building to the projection surface is approximately 60 meter and required the smallest beam angle to fit the diameter of the roundabout. The gobos are custom-designed and keystone corrected by ÅF Lighting to assure perfectly round water rings that follows the layout of the roundabout. Once a month the water rings change shape and add a little variation to the night-time scenery.”

The luminaire was furthermore custom-painted in white by SGM to minimise its visibility on the roof top during daytime and to blend in with the other technical equipment on the roof.

Franziska Bönecke: “As the lighting is tailored to fit the roundabout, glare and negative lighting effects for drivers and pedestrian are avoided. Many spectators are under the impression that the water rings magically appear as no light sources can be detected in the nearby surroundings. When having a closer look, they might be able to spot the single luminaire that is placed on top of the high building far away from the installation.”

The combination of innovative thinking and state-of-the art-technology has created a fantastic lighting project that impresses by night and is invisible during daytime.

SGM Light for Singapore Skyline at

Formula 1 Night Racing

Hexogon Solution Pte Ltd. was once again appointed to light up the city of Singapore during the 2015 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix Night Race. Since 2013 Hexogon used conventional flood lights, but this year they opted for LED fixtures by SGM.

Hexogon Solution Pte Ltd, formally known as Mozz Creation, dates back to 1997. The Singapore-based company has much experience within national and international events, such as the digital projection for South East Asian Games Opening and Closing Ceremony, setting Guinness World Record for the greatest light output in a projected image.

For their architectural illumination at the recent Formula 1 race in Singapore, Hexogon acquired 220 SGM P-5 wash lights, each consisting of 44 high power 10W RGBW LEDs. These were deployed to enhance the iconic and historic buildings around the race track including the Super Trees at the Garden By The Bay, the Victoria Concert Hall, the Formal Supreme Court and City Hall. Managing Director, Adrian Goh, knew the challenges from the previous race events:

Project carried out and supplied

by Hexogon Solution Pte Ltd.

“For some of the installations, we are not allowed to place our lighting equipment at the ideal spots, so alternatives have to be suggested. Also, as this is a night race, the entire race track would be brightly lit, creating a wash-out effect onto our installations, which mostly are located just beside the track.” Replacing the conventional lighting with the LED effects of the P-5s added advantages in size versus weight and flexibility in colour adjustments. “We feel that the fixture is compact, uniformity is good and of course the brand’s ongoing efforts to make IP65-rated products is our key requirement,” Adrian Goh informs, revealing his intention to extend his new fleet of P-5 wash lights.

The installations were in place for two weeks, though the race lasted only three days. This transformed Singapore’s skyline into a beautiful canvas creating the perfect background setting for the highest class of auto racing in the world.

Giving New Heights to Halifax with HSL

and SGM

New levels of colour and imagination graced the familiar landmark of the Halifax Transmitting Tower in a special one night light installation “Ploughcroft Eco Northern Lights” designed by James Bawn, which illuminated the 45.7-metre (150ft) relay mast.

Lighting equipment was supplied by Blackburn based HSL. The project was commissioned to help local roofing company Ploughcroft celebrate huge achievements in energy saving for numerous homes, schools and business across Yorkshire.

Once commissioned for the project, James created a concept and immediately turned to HSL for his lighting requirements. He wanted a strong eco-angle on the lighting – as they were celebrating power saving – and so chose primarily LED fixtures with SGM G-Spots and P-5 wash lights.

“I needed powerful IP65-rated units as the weather was likely to be at best unpredictable” explained James, “and these ticked all the boxes”.

Luckily gaining access right at the base of the tower to position equipment, one G-Spot was installed directly underneath the tower in the centre shooting its beam right up to the top. As it pierced the metal cross-bracing, the reflections bounced and refracted creating really attractive aberrations of the light.

Three sides of the tower were clearly visible from the various viewing areas in the city, so each of these was up-lit with a single G-Spot. These were programmed with gobo sequences to add texturing and effects on its metalwork construction – which took the light extremely

well - and the subtle but highly effective results made the cross bracing supports look like they were actually moving.

For an overall wash, four P-5 LED luminaires - fitted with 15 degree lenses to focus the output right up to the top of the tower - were also located around the base. A further six P-5 units with 21 degree lenses were utilized to light the bottom two thirds of the tower, ensuring a good, even saturated light.

“I was amazed how much you can achieve with four G-Spots and 10 P-5s” commented James, adding that it was all about strategic and calculated positioning. He was very impressed with the brightness and focusability of both types of fixtures, and he found the dual rotating gobo wheels of the G-Spots ideal for creating more complex effects.

Magical SGM G-Spot effects for The O2 Arena in LondonThe characteristic O2 Arena in London was the venue of the Rugby World Cup for a duration of seven weeks. For this event, The O2 transformed into a canvas for the world’s largest projection in terms of light output.

No less than 96 G-Spot IP65-rated LED moving heads from SGM adorned the dome canvas, joining forces with 68 video projectors that covered the 1 kilometre circumference of the roof. The G-Spots provided a petal shaped wash, while the projectors combined to create a 360 degree video image. The interactivity of the project enabled fans to project tweets onto the venue by using #WearTheRose.

This high-profile project was designed by Projection Artworks and the lighting element was designed and programmed by award-winning lighting designer Tim Routledge.

Professional lighting provider, HSL Group, supplied the many SGM G-Spots. Together with M.D. Simon Stuart, the team worked tirelessly to facilitate the delivery of equipment and infrastructure at very short notice.

No project of this dimension comes without challenges. Several tests were made with traditional moving lights in weather-proof soft domes, but as they failed, the G-Spot moving head was brought in.

Routledge explained: “This project was delivered at break neck speed from commission to delivery in a matter of weeks. My biggest creative requirement was being able to do deep saturates to achieve the

two dominant colours in the display (the English red rose and deep blues matching the client, telecommunications company O2) that would be bright enough at the throws we were having to rig at.”

Routledge explained: “This project was delivered at break neck speed from commission to delivery in a matter of weeks. My biggest creative requirement was being able to do deep saturates to achieve the two dominant colours in the display (the English red rose and deep blues matching telecommunications company O2) that would be bright enough at the throws we were having to rig at. The main logistical requirement was being waterproofed and reliable for up to 8 weeks at over 70m above ground exposed to the elements. After some testing it became clear that the traditional methods of inflatable domes were just never going to survive the wind loadings. -We even tested the domes in a wind tunnel. We had to find a fixture that could deliver the key requirements and there is only one fixture in the world that can do that – the SGM G-Spot. It’s totally waterproof and in deep saturates very bright indeed.”

Stuart already ordered his first G-Spot moving heads after seeing them for the first time at LDI in 2013: “Since then and having subsequently bought the first 40 units, I’ve been really impressed with their performance, reliability and ease of servicing. The units are completely sealed and free from any kind of water or particle ingress, so the process of maintaining and cleaning the unit is minimal in comparison to a normal unsealed moving light.”

SGM fixtures at Splendour in the Grass:Wet! Muddy! PERFECT!

It was wet, it was muddy, it was the perfect

conditions for SGM’s range of IP65 LED fixtures.

This year’s Splendour in the Grass festival in Byron

Bay close to the famous Gold Coast (located in

New South Wales in Australia) hosted a significant

quantity of SGM’s market leading outdoor lighting

fixtures. With damp experiences from the past

haunting festival organisers and production

managers, the requirement for lighting that

could withstand torrential winter rainfall was the

highest of priorities. And Mother Nature did not

disappoint!

The four day event saw SGM lighting fixtures such

as the P-5 RGBW wash and the Q-7 RGBW flood

take part in several installs and stage packages

across the festival. A most notable display being

that of Melbourne artist Sam Songailo. His 20

metre square maze comprising of 100 large pillars

was a high attraction of the festival, gathering

thousands of attendees at any given time.

SGM & Entertainment Technology Australia at Splendour in the Grass Music & Arts Festival 2015

Entertainment Technology Australia’s very own

Taylor Chadwick was recruited as lighting designer

for the install, in charge of bringing the display to

life every evening of the festival. “Lots of colour, lots of movement and a lighting fixture that was powerful enough to illuminate not just the visible face, but also throw light inside and through the 20 metre display,” remarked Taylor in regard to

the artist’s brief for lighting. “Having worked a lot with the SGM P-5, I knew it was the only fixture for the job. High quality RGBW colour mixing, 25,000 lumen output, built in wireless DMX and of course IP65 rating. All factors that contributed to the choice of the P-5”, Taylor said. Artist Sam

Songailo was also impressed by the SGM P-5, “The size, weight and overall footprint of the P-5 is remarkable when you look at the light it is putting out.”

The 12 SGM P-5’s operated flawlessly over the 4

day event despite the heavy rain, mud and some

sunshine that they encountered.

With 11 installations to prepare, ÅF Lighting

once again contributed to the atmosphere of the

Culture Night in the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

The powerful effects of 134 SGM luminaires,

supplied by rental companies FilmGEAR and

Vigsø Light and Show Design, dominated several

installations and created an impressive glow over

the city.

The annual nighttime festival filled the streets

of Copenhagen as people enjoyed the versatility

of the many installations this year that included

the G-Spot moving head, the P-5 wash lights, Q-7

flood blind strobes, SixPack blinders, LT-100 LED

tubes as well as Palco 3 and Palco 5. Lighting designer

from ÅF Lighting, Jasmine Van Der Pol explained the

visual concept for Culture Night 2015:

“This year was exceptional. We had different sites

and customers to work for. Each site had its own

visual identity and each project was different,

including visual concept supporting a guided tour

through the King’s Garden, the theme ‘building with

light’ for Danish Architecture Center and a chandelier

projected onto a facade for an art society.”

Explaining the choice of fixtures Van der Pol

commented:

“We chose to use SGM fixtures because of their

performance. They are powerful, easy to use and

have good optics. We especially like the P-5 range.

They are strong enough for big structures, facades,

high trees etc. The G-Spot is also fantastic and very

powerful as an image projector.”

LED and IP65 rating were two other important

factors to influence the decision-making process to

turn out in SGM’s favour. Van Der Pol said:

“During an event we want to use colours and we

want to adjust them or use them in a dynamic way.

That’s why we opted for LED. The IP65 rating was

additionally a critical requirement for all installations,

except for one placed under the roof of Nørreport

Station. Even so, because of the effectiveness of

the P-5s with their wide beam of 43 ,̊ we decided to

also install them at Nørreport Station.”

Positioning of the luminaires is always a challenge

during festivals. Van Der Pol explained:

“We focused on creating visual comfort for visitors,

positioning the light sources out of plain sight.

We wanted people to see the effect and not the

luminaire.”

A special challenge presented itself in the form of the

project for the Palmhouse at The Botanical Garden.

Because of the size of this venue, the team needed

the right amount of light for making the place stand

out during the evening and some accent lights

for generating visual interest. Both FilmGEAR and

students from Sonic College assisted ÅF Lighting.

Van Der Pol concluded:

“The P-5 wash light proved essential for the solution

due to its staggering output of 23,500 lumens from

its 8.9 kg chassis, in combination with the LT-100

tubes which created the accents in the shape of

fireflies and rain effects. Together they created a

wonderful and poetic scenery.”

After a successful event that bathed the Copenhagen

night skies in light, Van der Pol

already has plans for new

applications involving SGM fixtures.

The harbourside cranes, normally static figures on

the Bristol skyline, came to life in a choreograph-

ed routine that was exquisitely lit and perfectly

timed to music. Crane Dance Bristol presented

a jaw-dropping spectacle for the citizens of

Bristol, combining row boats, choirs, live music

and beautifully lit cranes, all being driven by the

engineers from the Bristol M-Shed, who had

lovingly restored them.

The show lighting was project managed by Nick

Read and controlled wirelessly via a City Theatrical

network with an ETC Element DMX desk situated

on the opposite side of the harbour. The entire

show (including lights, powering the cranes, and

rehearsals) consumed used 2.4 kWh of electricity.

Following the success of Crane Dance Bristol, the

Mass Crane Dance team are already receiving

enquiries from all over the world to create

spectacles for other cities – from harbourside

cranes, to hundreds of construction cranes on

building sites.

In relation to an on-going safety project for the residential area called Bispehaven in Aarhus, ÅF Lighting has facilitated a lighting workshop involving residents from the area and representatives of the initiative. The safety project, initiated by the housing administration

Østjysk Bolig, focuses on the social interactions, use and design of the outdoor areas and aims at increasing the life quality and feeling of safety for the residents of Bispehaven. Lighting can contribute essentially to creating safe, stimulating and inviting urban spaces, which was the reason to involve ÅF Lighting in the project. The lighting workshop was intended to collect valuable inputs from the residents with regards to their needs, demands and wishes for the future lighting installations in the area. Besides a good functional lighting for the public areas, the wish for a distinct visual identity was stated repeatedly.

Franziska Holmsted, Lighting Designer and Project Manager from ÅF Lighting:“In order to create a successful lighting project that fulfils the specific demands and wishes for Bispehaven, it was crucial to involve the

residents in the design process at an early stage. In the end, they are the ones for whom we are developing the solutions and they will determine if the project becomes a success.”

Based on the ideas and input gathered from the workshop, ÅF Lighting selected five specific project areas in which to carry out a temporary 4-week lighting installation. The test sites should provide a glimpse of how lighting can change the appearance and usage of an outdoor area at night. Besides two playgrounds and a part of the main pedestrian axis, ÅF Lighting selected a high facade that marks the borders of Bispehaven towards the surrounding city. With the intention to display the values of Bispehaven as expressed by the residents and thereby sending a powerful message, ÅF Lighting created a word-matrix that was projected onto the full height and width of the gable.

Franziska Holmsted explains: “The lighting solution required a very powerful LED projector that would allow precise aiming and adjustments in order to avoid light interference for the nearby residents while obtaining optimal use of the projection surface. Based on previous experiences with the G-Spot from SGM, we didn’t hesitate to contact the local team from SGM in Denmark. As the budget for these types of projects is limited and doesn’t allow the purchase of products, we were very pleased about SGM’s offer to sponsor a G-Spot for the 4-week testing installation.

Furthermore, we received professional assis-tance from SGM onsite regarding settings and programming of the lighting. It is great to work with people that are dedicated to their profession!”

The G-spot was placed on the top of an apartment complex, 85 m away from the façade, and it was programmed to display the message in different colours according to a pre-planned schedule. The projection was set to be visible from sunset to midnight and again from 6 am to sunrise in order to minimise the exposure for the residents, while still providing the maximum effect. The words were displayed in varying colours that slowly changed during the evening. In the early morning hours, the projection was set to white in order to create a calm and subtle lighting expression.

The aesthetic and tailored lighting installation aimed at strengthening the feeling of affiliation and expressing the specific values and hopes of the residents of Bispehaven for the future of their neighbourhood. Translated into English, the Danish words used are pride, light, safety, comfort, people and solidarity.

The safety project continues and hopefully it will entail many creative and inspiring lighting solutions like this in the future.

As a result of the ongoing expansion, SGM A/S has established a new subsidiary named SGM Nordic AB. The purpose of this is to be found in the increasing demand of products, projects, service and coordination within the Nordic Region, namely: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

SGM Nordic AB is positioned in Gothenburg, Sweden with warehousing and central administration, but also includes branches in Norway, Finland and Denmark. Heading SGM Nordic, you will find old SGM "veterans" such as Mikael Uddh and Steen Geertsen teaming up with well-known industry specialists around the region.

Mikael Uddh explains: “Multiple projects and in-creased communication on dealer and designer level, including cross boarder coordination, require an organisation that has a deeper regional insight, thus improving operational matters. Therefore, we have set up SGM Nordic.”

Peter Johansen, CEO of SGM, finds SGM Nordic to be just the right constellation. “Setting up SGM Nordic is a further development of our strategy and part of the globalization of SGM. We want to be able to provide the best possible service locally – in close proximity to our customers.”

Looking forward to a prosperous future, Uddh encour the Nordic market to get in touch with SGM Nordic ([email protected]).

prize for best lighting product

At the Prolight+Sound International Press Award, also known as the pipa award, SGM was nominated for the Q-7 in the category of best lighting product up against Robe BMFL and Martin Professional Mac Quantum Wash. The multipurpose extremely bright luminaire Q-7 RGBW won the prestigious award at the show.

Journalists of more than 100 dedicated special interest magazines from all over the world were called upon to nominate and vote for the best equipment on the market, and thus they selected the Q-7.

The pipa Prolight+Sound International Press Award has truly established itself as the “Grammy” of the industry, so it was with great honour that SGM’s CEO Peter Johansen and MD of SGM Deutschland Michael Herweg accepted the award.

“To be recognised for this ground-breaking LED fixture is amazing. It quickly became an industry standard and I am proud to see it implemented in so many great designs”, explained Peter Johansen

SGM CertifiedTechnicians

Recently, our distributors from Argentina and

Mexico went through technical training sessions

at the SGM HQ. Thus, representatives from

DistriSur in Argentina and Representaciones

de Audio (RDA) in Mexico have now undergone

comprehensive service training, preparing

them for an intensive inspection on any issues

regarding the SGM product line to ensure

fast and accurate response to any incident.

Each distributor is now able to function as an

extension of the SGM Service Team in their

respective local areas.

Area Sales Manager and Product Trainer of

both these countries, Ben Díaz, participated in

these sessions, and he is very pleased with the

concept. “This is related to SGM’s mission of

giving not only the best innovative solution for

the years to come, but also the best support for

our long-term users,” he says.

The technical product training is part of SGM’s

International Training Academy, where sessions

can be put together based on e.g. specific product

groups. The particular seminar was related to P,

Q and G series as well as the SixPack, for which

these certified technicians are now authorized

to offer technical maintenance.

Feature reviews, guidance in maintenance and

replacement of components, SGM software

tools and testing of IP65 validity after assembly

with the SGM Vacuum Test Kit, were just some

of the areas in which the participants received

education.

CEO Peter Johansen emphasises: “The training

of our distributors is of high importance to us

in order to expand our well-educated service

team to achieve the highest possible customer

satisfaction. This commitment from both

DistriSur and RDA shows the dedication

we are looking for in a distributor.”

SGM NEWS No. 9 2016

Since taking ownership of SGM in February 2012, CEO Peter Johansen and his team have embarked on a journey to become the world’s leading manu-facturer of LED lighting technology. With heavy investment in development and manufacturing, 2015 ended on a high with a significant injection of capital to boost the company’s global presence. On a mission to intensify focus on the Asia Pacific region, as of January 1st 2016, SGM has appointed Vijay Thaygarajoo as Area Sales Manager for Asia Pacific.

Apart from Vijay’s appointment, to further strengthen SGM’s commitment to the area, a new SGM Service Center has opened in Singapore to provide fast and reliable service to customers around the region. This Service Center will be supervised by Billy Magendran.

Highly recommended by local associates, Vijay scheduled a meeting with Peter Johansen and his team, and soon after the agreement was in place. Vijay said:“I have spent my entire career in the lighting industry and I’ve kept my eye out for opportunities with SGM for a while. What attracted me is the company’s vast product portfolio for both architectural and entertainment lighting, and Singapore is the perfect gateway into Eastern territories.”

Vijay believes the SGM brand is starting to gain a significant foothold in the Asia Pacific region – particularly due to a couple of recent projects: One of them was a project staged last year by Hexogon Solutions Pte Ltd who had been appointed to light up the City of Singapore during the 2015 Formula

1 Singapore Grand Prix. And Indonesian distributor, PT Goshen Swara, completed a project involving 40 P-5s and 40 Q-7s for Indonesian broadcasting company D’Six Studio, which is owned and operated by PT. Prima Global Indomedia. Several other projects have also contributed to cementing SGM’s name and reputation in the region as a manufacturer of innovative LED lighting.

Vijay predicts golden days for the IP65-rated G-Spot and G-1 Beam LED moving heads, due to the many prospects present in the region, ranging from outdoor venues to nightclubs and casinos. Also, the EDM genre has been on the rise and with larger events and touring productions offering vast opportunities for SGM’s extensive product portfolio. In the architectural segment, the high-performance color LED, P-5, is already a popular fixture, and with a LED range primarily based on IP65-rated, maintenance-free solutions, SGM is predicted to offer many new industry standards for the Asian region.

Having formerly operated from a base in Thailand, Asia Pacific holds a special place in the heart of Peter Johansen, SGM’s CEO:“With Vijay at the helm and the new Service Center in place, we’ve got both the right man for the job and the appropriate infrastructure to support him. We look forward to working with him closely and to establish our position in the region.“

HSL architectural projects deploying SGM's P-2 wash lights, illuminating the sculpture Spirit of the Staithes and the Blyth Lighthouse in Northumberland.

HSL Group expands SGM fleets to meet market demand

Based in the north of England, HSL Group has

spent the last 20 years consolidating its reputation

as one of Europe’s most rapidly expanding rental

companies in Europe.

SGM has been helping them to achieve the

more recent accelerated growth – and HSL has

systematically been ordering the manufacturer’s

award-winning and IP65-rated products in large

quantities.

With an inventory of more than 1oo G-Spots HSL

has been building up an architectural stock with

SGM’s versatile P-5 and P-2 wash lights and boosted

at the end of the year with an order for 250 Q-7

fixtures. These were specially requisitioned to

support a major New Year count down illumination.

After investing in an initial batch of 40 G-Spots,

it was last year’s Rugby World Cup in the UK, and

the request by Projection Artworks to deliver a

memorable ‘flower’ onto the domed canvas roof

of the London O2 Arena, that brought about the

purchase of 60 additional units. This was claimed

to be the world's largest projection in terms of light

output (totalling 1.42 million Lumens).

Simon Stuart, HSL Managing Director, recognised

that the G-Spot, attached to the O2’s masts, would

easily withstand all weathers over the seven-week

period of the tournament, and especially the high

winds, without the need for a protection dome.

But Stuart believes that the functionality of G-Spot

offers much greater potential:

“People think of it largely as a fixture for festival

stages because of its IP rating but it is a great

general purpose touring light. The brightness has

opened up a lot of LDs’ eyes.”

TechRig invests in SGM’s Q-7

TechRig has now joined SGM’s rental portfolio in South Africa with the company’s initial purchase of the Q-7 flood blind strobe.

As a leading specialist technical solutions agency, TechRig approached SGM’s local distributor S.E.T Africa to expand their rental stock with SGM luminaires. “We were looking for cutting-edge LED solutions, and that’s why we selected the SGM products”, says Director of TechRig, Michael Collyer. He adds: “The Q-7 is a nice small multipurpose unit, which can be used as a colour washing set piece to eye candy extravaganza.”

SGM’s profile matches well with TechRig’s vision. This well-established and experienced company seeks to implement the latest technological developments with top quality gear that is constantly updated, and, as Collyer underlines, “SGM applies a different way of thinking to their products making their products a bit different to any other.”

Lighting designer, Francois van der Merwe, recently deployed TechRig’s newly acquired Q-7s for a corporate event in Cape Town. “I think it was the fixture’s output that stunned everyone;

that was the big talking point among the crew. Even the sound guys took notice. But from a designer’s point of view I really like the colour mixing as well and the size of the physical unit – you can sneak them in anywhere on your design.”

TechRig’s Activators installed the products under van der Merwe’s skilled design guides to create the exact look he was going for at the gala dinner and awards show. “We wanted to create a nice multi-functional and multi-purpose look, especially between the awards and the entertainment. We wanted to create nice moments in the entertainment section where set, AV and lighting were working together in synergy for a visual spectacular,” van der Merwe informs.

The Q-7 fixtures were stacked around the set (which’s content was delivered by 2 x 26 K

projectors). “This allowed us to frame the set, and in other sections blend the set and lighting rig together. We also used the Q-7 as eye candy and pixel mapped them with the AV content, as well as used them as stabs to highlight big changes in the music.”

The Q-7 contains 2,000 powerful RGBW LEDs, and with all LEDs on it delivers a staggering 28,000 lumen with a spread of 110 .̊ Collyer reports that their client was ecstatic: “And I’m sure they’ll ask for the Q-7 by name in the future. There are so many different ways to use the Q-7s so watch this space!”

Operations Director of S.E.T Africa, Marin Matakovic, is excited about this new investment by TechRig: “It’s great when others see the potential we also see in the SGM product range - which availability for the SA market has nowbeen expanded through TechRig."

SGM increases its presence across Latin America In November 2014, Spanish Lighting Designer,

Ben Díaz joined SGM as Area Manager and

Global Product Trainer. Since then, in an effort

to rearrange SGM’s distribution network to

match its growing presence in the architectural

and entertainment markets in Mexico and

subsequently across the Latin American region,

Díaz relocated temporarily to Mexico. Now,

less than a year later, Díaz and the SGM team

are reaping the benefits of a successful 2015 in

Mexico.

To celebrate the Mexican success a new

SGM showroom, located on the premises of

Representaciones de Audio (RDA) in Mexico

City, was officially opened in February 2016. This

showroom is equipped as an exclusive venue and

a permanent installation designed specifically for

the SGM products. While officially opening the

showroom, Peter Johansen awarded Jaime Celis

and his team at RDA the honor of being SGM Distributor of the Year, 2015.

As part of SGM’s strategy to conquer South and

Central America and reorganize distribution,

Mexico was chosen as the first point of call due

to its proximity to the US and its influence on

the entire continent. Some of the biggest tours

from North America and Spain also visit Mexico.

According to Díaz, the Mexican rental companies

are very professional, while Mexican television

channels are the broadcasting reference for the

rest of the continent. Both factors contribute to

providing the perfect climate for SGM’s success.

Based on the successful Mexican setup, Díaz

spent much of 2015 venturing into the rest of the

continent, achieving equally satisfying results.

With distribution partner, RDA, in place – offering

a strong sales and support infrastructure to the

Mexican market – Díaz has been able to develop

other key markets in Central and South America.

As SGM was already a force to be reckoned with

in Colombia as well as Brazil, with 50 P-5s recently

sold to Brazilian customers and a number of Q7s

for Brazilian TV station TV Globo, much of 2015

was spent establishing new partnerships in Peru

and Argentina, as well as increasing exposure in

the emerging markets of Ecuador and Paraguay.

The New World Trade Center in Asunción recently

installed 16 P-5 washes and Peruvian SGM partner,

GS-Lighting, are doing well in broadcasting with

more than 200 LS-3.75 LED screens in operation.

Díaz also has high hopes for Colombia. One of the

country’s major rental companies, Iluminación

Jaime Dussán, carries a large number of SGM

products in its rental stock, including G-Spot

moving heads, P-5s, Q-7s and X-5 strobes.

In Brazil, where LBO/Hot Machine has been the

SGM distributor for many years, rental company

Spectrum Design e Iluminação has used SGM on

major tours and e.g. DVD recordings for Brazilian

artists Ivete Sangalo and Luan Santana.

Panama has recently bought a large quantity of

X-5 strobes, while SGM partner in Ecuador, EASA,

sold a number of G-Spots for an outdoor venue.

In Argentina, various projects are in the pipeline

and according to Díaz, “an important project will

be announced in Chile later this year”. Díaz also

expects 2016 to bring developments in Uruguay,

Dominican Republic as well as an increased

presence in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Bolivia and

Cuba.

SGM’s recent success in the Latin American

region comes down to a strategy of considering

the particular needs of each market, rather than

treating Latin America as a single country. The

SGM website has recently gone live in a Spanish

language version and news, blogs and social

media posts are published regularly in Spanish.

Another key to the Latin American success is

SGM’s transformation to LED. Díaz said:

“We have built our new LED fixtures for the long-term, and we are creating a full experience based on qualified service, permanent support and versatile solutions. As a result, we now have prestigious, multi-purpose solutions, and a mission to grow across the continent.”

Finally, Díaz acknowledges the importance of the

strong relationships that have been established

in the region:

“We are proud of our achievements; however we also acknowledge that a lot of it comes down to the hard work and dedication of our partners, customers and friends who have helped to expand the SGM family across Latin America. Thank you.”

SGM Deutschland celebrates opening of new facilities in Cologne On October 1st 2015, SGM Deutschland opened their new office in Cologne. Now based on Hansestrasse 91, the German team has completely modernized the building and created a large showroom plus warehouse facilities.

Managing Directors of SGM Deutschland, Michael Herweg and Thorsten Sattler, invited customers, suppliers, neighbors, friends and the press to officially open new office premises for

SGM Deutschland in Cologne. Peter Johansen, SGM CEO joined from HQ in Denmark to celebrate this milestone in the company history with the German team.

Looking back at a successful event, Herweg said:

“I’m very pleased that so many people accepted our invitation. The event marked a great start to 2016 for the German team. Our new office facilities in this central location will facilitate an optimal servicing of customers in the German-speaking region. The combination of office space, warehouse facilities and our grand showroom gives us the best foundation to continue our successful path and growth.”During the opening event a band was hired to break in the new 220 sqm fully equipped showroom. In the future, this is where visitors will experience demos of the powerful SGM LED range. It was with great satisfaction that Sattler described the achievement of this milestone:

“Michael and I are very happy. Seeing so many amazing people here to celebrate with us makes it clear to us that we must be doing something right. The combination of our unique products and socializing with our visitors made it a truly perfect night.”

Peter Johansen congratulated the two Managing Directors:

“What Herweg and Sattler and their team have managed to build up almost from scratch is an incredible achievement, which is something we are all very proud off and impressed by. We have a close cooperation between Denmark and Germany and I’m looking forward to our next steps together.”

Germany has always been a front running hub for SGM. As one of the largest markets within the EU demonstrating a clear eager for innovative solutions, SGM Deutschland holds a significant share of SGM’s global export.

And with 2016 off to a great start, SGM Deutchland are looking forward to an eventful year in their new, optimal surroundings – kicking off with the SGM Lighthouse Days, where SGM Deutschland will be offering product demonstrations and training sessions free of charge. London-based technical service company Lightwave

Productions has joined the growing number of

rental houses worldwide who are finding SGM’s

P-5 LED wash light an indispensible part of their

production inventories.

A lighting technician since his days at Bristol

University the company’s founder, Henry Clarke,

hopes that the P-5s — which were supplied by SGM

UK along with standard 43° lens — will help build

profile for his company as the summer season

beckons.

“I realised we needed IP65-rated products for the

outdoor events and it seemed pointless looking at

old style 400W floods when the industry is moving

towards LED,” he said.

As a freelance lighting tech, whose new company

is now into its second year, Henry recognised that

the P-5 had all the attributes required after seeing

them at the PLASA Show. “I had also used them

previously with another production company and

knew they were good,” he said. “When Clive Bailey

at SGM contacted me, I decided it was time to buy.”

“They are easy to deploy and will be useful both

for stage washes and lighting building façades such

as Kings College Cambridge [pictured]. I will also be

using the strobing effect at a festival.”

Henry, whose company runs full event production

services, also favours the fact that the P-5s have

W-DMX built in. “The ability to control this fixture

wirelessly is a huge advantage. They have a very

low power draw and because they are IP65-rated

require very little maintenance — in fact there are

many advantages over a standard 400W flood.”

Finally, looking at the anticipated demand on the

fixtures, he also predicts great opportunities for

dry hire.

Q. Does the P-5 have the best Lumen output for its segment?A. With 23,500 Lumen for the RGBW version, 30,000 Lumen for the tunable white version and 33,000 Lumen for the cool white version, the SGM P-5 is the brightest IP65 low-profile and lightweight static LED wash on the market since 2012. The secret of its output is the combination between Danish engineering and innovative optics.

Q. Is the P-5 the most efficient LED wash light?A. 58 Lumen per Watt is the highest value in the industry for a wash light with individual lenses. The P-5 reaches that ratio. It is twice the average for a wash luminaire, and it means 75% more efficiency than the standard LED washes for architectural projects. Moreover, the two white versions of P-5 offer a staggering 74 Lumen/Watt (TW) and 81 Lumen/Watt (W).

Q. Why is the P-5 adding new dimension to outdoor installations?A. The P-5 is a lightweight, compact and elegant IP65 wash. These are very rare features in a fixture intended for permanent installations. It is impossible to see an IP65 wash above 10,000 Lumen with less than 18 kg – still the P-5 only weighs 8,9 kg, offering twice the output. It gives deep colors, contrast and smooth color changing. And it comes with RDM, DMX, RFID and a powerful internal editor.

Q. What makes the P-5 so popular for architectural projects?A. Amongst its other achievements, the P-5 provides a wide and bright coverage for big areas, which is a key point for architectural Lighting Designers. For instance, the 43º lens is able to illuminate almost 15 meters wide from a 15-meter distance with an impressive punch and evenness. With only one P-5 unit you can equal the performance of three standard LED wall washers, and that really makes the difference.

Q. How is the performance of P-5 for TV purposes?A. While P-5 RGBW leads any chart for color-changing fixtures, the P-5 TW version has become one of the most useful tools for broadcasting, and that’s why you can see them in several studios worldwide. It lets you change the color temperature between 2,200 K and 5,300 K without any filters or physical accessories. If you need to match a D65 daylight illuminant, you can choose the cool white P-5 W. In addition, P-5 RGBW has a 2,000 K - 10,000 K white balance accessible via one CTC DMX

Why P-5 is the leading LED wash light on the market

channel. None of the three P-5 versions exceed 500 Watt of power consumption. And if you need a custom frequency rate for their LEDs, you can just change the Hz value in the menu.

Q. How difficult is it to find P-5 units when touring worldwide?A. SGM is proud to say that our P-5 luminaires are widely spread throughout the world. Today there are more than 26.000 units in operation. It is a key product for stage lighting, since it can be used as a color-changing front light, a long-throw blinder, a powerful wash for backgrounds or an impressive backlight. The biggest rental companies in the world have P-5 units in their inventories and many of the most important summer festivals use P-5 fixtures in their rigs.

Q. Why are the colors of P-5 so famous?A. Color is the most important feature in P-5’s design. Unlike other similar products, the four RGBW LED chips used in the P-5 are well-balanced in order to achieve up to 6,100 Lumen in red or 4,360 Lumen in blue. That is three times more brightness in primary colors than the best LED competitors of P-5. But when it comes to working with colors, smoothness is the key. The P-5 has three DMX modes capable of a fine 16-bit RGBW performance, CTC control and a very accurate color mixing to provide interesting hues like contrasting turquoises, sharp lavenders or pale pastels.

Q. Which are the P-5 features that lighting crews like most?A. It can be controlled over wireless DMX. It upgrades the firmware through the DMX daisy chain. It only needs one omega bracket with ¼ turn fasteners to be rigged. It comes with a floor stand with available space for clamps. It has a retractile safety eyebolt. It uses a clap-on system to attach the barndoors and it is built to last.

Q. Is it fair to call it “the most versatile wash ever”?A. With an accurate performance and worldwide presence in big tours, music festivals, television productions, outdoor installations, opera venues, classic theatres, giant facades, disco clubs, shopping malls and iconic sites, the P-5 is the new standard LED wash luminaire. It has an incredible ability to serve and provide unique solutions for many different users and applications. It acts as a link between the different lighting segments, and it helps to improve the resources of any lighting design. We call it the P-5. We love it, and we can clearly see that we’re not the only ones.

A FIXTURE TO ROCK

Use it as a moving backlight with intense and deep colors, rig it in the front truss through heavy rains and the festival’s pandemonium, place it outside the stage to illuminate the crowd. Do you want the same color texture in all the movers? Use the G-Profile as a powerful spot with blades or program it like a wash, taking advantage of the wide-ranging zoom and the linear frost. Back to the truck? The G-Profile is solid and built to last. Another show tomorrow? Forget about cleaning or re-lamping: The G-Profile is always ready to rock.

THE LIGHTHOUSE OF INSTALLATIONS

The G-Profile is the essential tool for urban stages. It generates a precise lighting projection for a monument, fast movement in a fountain show or blade cuttings over columns and windows. No domes, no lamps, no maintenance. It offers wireless control when it’s impossible to wire it. It gives you an internal programmer when you don’t have a controller. Protected against the weather, the sand, the corrosion. It provides maximum brightness with minimum power consumption. Simply a waterproof beacon for any site.

A LIMELIGHT MADE FOR HIGHLIGHTS

To build a masterpiece requires accurate performances. That’s why the G-Profile implements electronic 16-bit control, attribute calibration by software and a solid enclosure to avoid stray light. The G-Profile was designed for theatrical colors. Imagine straw ambers, deep salmons or indigo blues in a LED moving head. Imagine rectangular shapes with extreme evenness. Imagine a yoke panning or tilting in ultra-silent operation. High definition lenses create precise beam angles. Top-quality components build trustworthy machines. Great ideas produce useful tools like the G-Profile.

A CROSSOVER IN TELEVISION

You dreamed of it: A fixture with color correction from 2,000 K to 10,000 K, flicker-free operation, ultra-smooth electronic dimming, customizable frequency rate and periodical recalibration of LEDs. Now it’s real, and we call it the G-Profile. No more interruptions in the set for replacing bulbs or filtering. No more extra costs in never-ending maintenance cleanings. No more consumable parts. Profitable productions, reliable shows, flexible studios. That’s what modern TV demands, that’s what the G-Profile gives.

1. Do it safelyIP20 is the most common level of protection in the lighting industry. The number 2 indicates that you cannot access the hazardous parts of a luminaire with your fingers, and 0 means, literally, “not protected against harmful ingress of water”. That’s why those manufacturers warn you against using the fixture outdoors. To do an open air show with a mark below IP65 is not safe at all. But if you own IP65 luminaires, then you’re adding an extra feature to your gigs: safety.

2. Maximize it indoors, optimize it outdoorsThe IP scale was made to fulfill your requirements. In IP65, 6 means “complete protection against dust” and 5 means that your fixture will not break after a long and tough period of rain. These are the typical requirements for open air live concerts, but it will also benefit all those indoor permanent installations where dust or smoke fluid can really destroy the equipment. Looking for IP67-rated luminaires? Unless you’re going to submerge your luminaires in a pool, such an extreme rating is not necessary. IP65 will surely fit your needs.

3. Get the profitsConsumables and spare parts: Those are the real problems in a luminaire. By using IP65-rated fixtures, your power supplies are protected against humidity, your optics do not need inside cleaning and your PCB boards are free of corrosion. When the repairs are minimal, the savings are huge. And if a luminaire combines IP65-rating with long-lasting LED light sources, then it’s time for profits.

4. Reuse after serviceIs there a way to reassemble IP fixtures after service tasks? Even for the highest levels of protection like IP65-ratings, there’s an essential way to verify the IP65-rating. After the reassembly, just connect our vacuum testing device that, via a computer, verifies that the assembly is done correctly and the fixture is waterproof.

5. Forget about it and enjoyKeep focus on your lighting design and enjoy the show. IP65 is a solution, not another thing to worry about. So take it easy and relax: That’s exactly what an IP65 inventory can do for you, and that’s why – no matter your role in the production – you should claim IP65-rated luminaires in your setups.

Color is the most intangible of all our tools. It is a mix between physics, psychology, semantics and even spirituality. We don’t even know what a Lighting Designer means when talking about “giving more warmth to the light”. We can understand that he wants to “heat up” the light source, and therefore, to lower its color temperature or to absorb long wavelengths, typically considered as “cold”. But some lighting guys will translate “more warmth” as giving more quality to a specific light, using diffusers or different accessories. And some might simply refer to emotional concepts, difficult to understand for a Technician waiting for precise instructions.

If Newton and Goethe already confronted very different ideas of color, what more can I say? It’s easier to face the fact that our way of understanding color as Lighting Designers contain many different shades, and some of them are more complex than they appear – especially when our vision needs to interpret what an audience perceives through their eyes or camera lenses

Traditionally, white (or the addition of all frequencies) is the color (or rather “no color”) that we all use the most. Why? Apart from its neutrality or versatility, the reason is evident: Nothing is

brighter than white, especially if your lamp outputs “white” light and you need to filter it (losing light) in order to get colors. All the subtractive mixing, including all CMY systems which discharge lamps are based on, work under that premise, suffering all the inherent disadvantages. In summary: If you want power, use white!

When we talk about LED technology, it’s necessary to choose between a white light source and a color mix; in both cases the space is limited. The versatility given by the mix is juxtaposed with the better output of white sources. Manufacturers like SGM offer both options in most of their products (Q-7 RGBW to work with the whole color palette or Q-7 W for a brighter output in white, for instance). However, it seems reasonable to use a white light source for creating visual impacts and not a wide range of temperatures, tones and hues. That’s why SGM offers a white LED source in the G-1 Beam: A compact and lightweight moving head designed to build specific effects. By using a white LED you can increase the efficacy (maximum output but low power consumption), and that’s a key factor for a battery-driven luminaire.

But when it comes to a Spot moving head, things are different. Let us be honest, we tend to abuse white because we like to use gobos or prisms, and colors through CMY mixing do not allow us to get the appropriate intensity. The additive mixing (RGB) used in LED-based big spots is changing the game. It’s enough to see a SGM G-Spot in red to understand that you need more than just a gobo, a prism or a frost to kill its output. Suddenly, the chromatic intensity appears, with deep saturated colors and high contrast. It is something that we cannot recall; something we have never seen before, and that’s why we used to choose white for our effects

To have a better understanding of this, I would like to tell you a story. In July 2015, I was invited

to a fantastic public shootout in London, where 200 Lighting Designers could see, for the very first time, the best spot moving heads of this industry operating together. The most prestigious brands in the market took their most powerful products directly from the factory, in the best possible

conditions, so that we could compare all of them from a 25 meter distance over a black wall. It couldn’t be more crystal clear.

What we all saw, publicly confirmed what SGM has been talking about for a long time: There is not a single spot moving head in the market capable of G-Spot colors. Such important colors as saturated red, full green, deep blue or even magenta were shown in the G-Spot as never before, overcoming lamps up to 1700 W with 18 bit operation. The G-Spot wasn’t just the best in color intensity (say goodbye to subtractive mixing), it was the only light with a flat and even footprint as well (say goodbye to beam hotspots), the highest in color saturation (say goodbye to washed colors), the widest in contrast ratio (say goodbye to weak colors) and the most accurate in color changing (say goodbye to the disadvantages of dichroic palettes), since it was the fastest in color switch but also the smoothest in slow transitions, and even the widest in dimmers dynamic range performing a fade in and a fade out.

The question then arises: Is RGB mixing capable of providing a good white? G-Spot’s proposal is interesting. Thanks to an extra channel not accessible via DMX (called Y for Yellow), the SGM G-Spot adds different shades to RGB mixing, creating a calibration mode (or CTC mode) that offers something we have never seen before in a luminaire: Linear color correction from 2,000 K to 10,000 K. Now we can correct a moving head’s white to match high pressure sodium lamps, a fluorescent or the average color temperature in a cloudy day, in addition to 3,200 K, 5,600 K and 6,500 K white balances.

This not only prevents the use of CTO or CTB filters. Since G-Spot’s white is created by RGBY mixing through a mathematical algorithm over the CIE color space, it can be recalibrated over time, compensating the natural LED decay. Considering that discharge lamps’ color temperature is highly unstable and changes within hours, this is a big achievement. After recalibration, G-Spot colors will remain pure without compromising an accurate and adaptable white thanks to its CTC channel (DMX channel 6 in standard mode or 10 in extended mode). We don’t even need to worry about this mode in the lighting console, since G-Spot automatically deactivates the calibration when we use pure colors and reverts to the previous state when swapping to white.

Personally, I appreciate G-Spot’s RGBY mixing, as it gives me more pastel colors, which are softer and warmer than RGBW palette. Yes, I said “warmer”! Warmth will always be our hidden joker until we all agree about its meaning!

"What we all saw in there publicly confirmed what SGM has been talking about for a long time: There is not a single spot moving head in the market capable of G-Spot colors."

POI: Permanent Outdoor InstallationBrand new SGM range of POI fixtures

SGM is proud to announce the launch of the POI range of IP65-rated LED lighting fixtures. Designed for permanent outdoor installations in both entertainment and architectural applications, the POI fixtures feature extremely bright and powerful colors and a resilient housing to protect them in outdoor environments.

Like the standards – only different

The new permanent outdoor installation products from SGM are based on the familiar standard fixtures with the same optical performance and electrical components, but optimized for permanent outdoor installations. Engineered to endure even the most extreme weather conditions, the POIs take on rainy days, icy winters, dusty winds, extreme heat and salty sprays of seawater – eliminating the need to shield off the fixtures to protect them from the elements.

All POI fixtures come standard with a 5 year warranty. A patented dehumidification processor prevents condensation, which in turn prevents corrosion and ultimately prolongs the lifespan of the electronic components. This technology makes SGM the only true manufacturer of permanent outdoor LED installation products.

With the A-4 RM ArtNet to DMX converter, the POI fixtures become remotely accessible,

allowing you to program your show from a remote location, upload it and schedule it on site. If connected to the internet, it works as a remote monitoring device to notify the service provider of any irregularities within the fixtures.

Customization is part of the POI philosophy. The POI fixtures are available in white and black, as well as an array of custom RAL colors, to accommodate the requirements and high aesthetic standards of Architects and Designers.

Common for all POI fixtures: • Corrosion protected and saltwater resistant• Maintenance-free• Patented dehumidification processor• 5 year warranty• IP66-rating

Peter Johansen, SGM CEO said: “If you work with outdoor applications, you know that so far no other manufacturers have been able to produce truly outdoor-compatible products. Those days are over! At SGM we have developed a range of reliable permanent outdoor installation products to give Lighting Designers and Architects the possibility of incorporating entertainment lighting into architecture.”

The G·1 BeamLED MOVING HEAD

With the ground-breaking G-1 Beam moving head, SGM has succeeded in offering numerous cutting-edge features in a physically compact chassis.

A sharply defined, flat and uniform beam that operates rapidly in every movement provides intense mid-air beam effects through a high power white LED light source and a color wheel as well as a gobo wheel. The results are high contrast levels and an extreme brightness. Adding to its uniqueness, this moving head is not only IP65-rated and maintenance-free, but also offers the exclusive choice of being either battery-driven with an impressive 10-12 hours operation in typical use or

being connected wired mains power.

The G-1 comes in two varieties: with or without the base unit. With the base, usability is diverse as a battery can be inserted and thus positioning is independent from any power source proximity, and the IP rating ensures no need of bulky domes for outdoor application. Without the base, the G-1 can be mounted onto the ceiling or a rig in e.g. a club environment for that powerful and bright beam effect that operates in high speed movements using an external power supply.

The G·Spot

Today more and more moving heads are being exposed to wet and humid conditions. The consequences of such conditions are comprehensive, compromising the cooling effect, luminous intensity and projection quality, while dirt accumulates inside. Based on the revolutionary P-5 technology which includes the highest luminous output and an IP rated fixture, we have overcome these challenges. The G-Spot is a maintenance-free product with an IP rating of 65, water, dirt and sand proof.

Worst case scenario in a turbulent environment, the front lens must merely be wiped off, which is a huge time and cost saver effectively eliminating the need for cleaning and maintenance. The applicability of the G-Spot is unlimited; the IP65 moving head can replace any lighting products in any environment.

Due to the revolutionary product features the G-Spot won the prestigious top industry PLASA Award for Innovation, 2013.

With the G-Spot comes the benefit of a silent unit valuable for any stage installation. The integrated fan provides variable fan control through four fan settings for quiet operation: Silent, Standard, Max and Full Fan Speed.

Meanwhile, the exterior design of the moving head has been constructed to prevent stray light scatter causing the fixture to illuminate itself.

SGM has introduced a patent-pending solution to ensure the complete IP65-rating of the G-Spot; a Pressure Relief Valve fitted to equalize the air pressure. Through this membrane, air is allowed to pass through the membrane, while humidity cannot. The air humidity will be maintained at a constant level by the electrolysis process of hydrogen extraction which eliminates humidity – thereby creating the ideal environment for electronic circuits.

The G·Profile LED MOVING HEAD

The moving head product range is now expanded with a new, exclusive framing version named G-Profile. Alternatively, an add-on framing shutter module is inter-changeable with the gobo module of the original G-Spot.

The framing allows the G-Profile to perform beam-shaping images and projections via four individually controllable blades, each adjustable ±30 degrees while the module is rotatable through ±45 degrees.

The G-Profile still provides the option of combining framing techniques with 5 rotating gobos and opens for gobo animation and interaction when framing is used.

This is a perfect appliance for enhanching performance for television productions, theatres and architectural installations.

The set of SGM designed gobos allows for the creation of user-controllable soft framing and the effect wheels function as an extension to one another for achieving continuous dynamic animation effect in a stepless manner.

The G-Profile is a maintenance-free product with an IP rating of 65, water, dirt and sand proof.

With the introduction of the innovative R-2 LED rail light series, SGM has revolutionized rail lights, as we know them today. The new lighting concept gives the user full control and offers a unique and personal experience. It is possible to control your complete light setup via wireless DMX. This means that dimming the light up and down to change the mood, changing the color settings or even adjusting it according to the season of the year can be carried out in an instance - even from a distance. Automatically programmed schedules or alterations can all be done manually, providing endless possibilities.

This opens up for many new opportunities to create dynamic and vibrant environments. The R-2 is extremely intelligent in terms of adapting to a specific environment. As

people stop by a sensor connected to the system, it is possible to activate a preset light sequence that will attract attention to a specific highlighted area. Interaction is possible via a displayed QR code that when scanned with a smart phone will allow the user to gain control with predefined areas.

The track adapter system makes it ideal for retrofitting your entire setup in most commonly used tracks available on the market today. This can be done in a few easy steps, as it is unnecessary to pull new cables etc.

R-2 comes in different beam angles depending on type and configuration to fulfill the requirements for most applications. (Please refer to the product specifications).

With the application software C-5 Wireless DMX Controller developed by SGM, it is now possible to set up different customized modes to fit your specific needs. These can be pre-scheduled so that you do not have to worry about turning it on or off in the future.

The TLD-612A offers all the same features and driving capabilities as the regular TLD-612, with the variation of offering an Ethernet EJ45 Artnet interface instead of a regular 5-pin XLR DMX interface.

The output of the TLD-612A is completely individually configurable by software, which makes it possible to send any channel range in any universe to each output. The Artnet interface is especially designed for high-speed / high-flow DMX, and thereby making it a perfect match for pixel mapping.

This makes the TLD-612A suitable for applications that require numerous DMX universes, at a cost-efficient level. This driver ensures quick and easy installation for touring.

ILDInstallation LED Driver

The ILD, Installation LED Driver, shares the majority of the features of the TLD-612A, but has a smaller and more compact power supply, which makes it suitable for permanent installations, where a small physical footprint is required. The ILD is capable of driving either 6 LT-100 tubes, 3 LT-200 tubes or 3 full length LB-100 strings (7 LB-100 pr. string).

The ILD is also IP65-rated and has daisy-chainable Ethernet for Artnet input, and it has a power consumption of maximum 120 W.
