HOW IT ALL BEGAN...

I can tell you the exact day I decided I wanted

to own a Model A. I was sitting in my office in the City of Aiken

Municipal Building on June 19, 2003, when my boss called for me to look out the window. There were a few model A’s passing by and he, being a Georgia Tech grad (home of the Ramblin’ Wreck), was naturally drawn to the Model A’s. We scooted down the stairs to see what was going on and found ourselves in the middle of a Model A pa-rade. It turned out to be the MAFCA Southeast Meet touring Aiken. As I watched the cars go by, little did I know that some of these folks would later become my Model A family.

Every car that came by was different and there must have been a hundred of them. I kept pointing out my favorite, which of course changed every two or three cars!

I followed the last of the parade around the corner and discovered that they were parked up and down Laurens Street– the main drag of the downtown– waiting for admirers to come and talk cars.

When my lunch break came, I remember going from car-to-car looking at them all and thinking how much fun the owners seemed to be having. The owner of a beige roadster invited me to sit in the driver’s seat. I was hooked.

Since I was in junior high school (about 40 years ago), I had always pictured myself behind the wheel of a vintage Mercedes Sports Coupe but that day, the Mercedes disappeared from my dreams; good thing, too, since they’re so expensive to keep running. Since the Model A parade, I had my sights on an A.

It took me 5 years to build a garage and to take the plunge and buy a car but now I’m one of those lucky folks having so much fun driving and show-ing off my Roadster (and occasionally sitting on the side of the road awaiting rescue).

Please join me in Aiken on September 22, In-ternational Model A Day; maybe we can get anoth-er convert or two!

This spring the club approved a few purchases

such as new hats, technical manuals for the library, and a brick with inscription as a donation towards the MAFFI museum construction.

I want to acknowledge Bob Collier as Bob was instrumental in the purchase of our new hats. The club approved purchasing 8-dozen hats to be sold at $12 each. Bob, through his contacts, was able to get good-quality hats at a reasonable price. They look great and if you would like a new hat, they’re at Richard’s garage and can be purchased anytime.

As many of you know, Alan Stewart has re-cently inventoried and cataloged our entire library during the move into the new part of the garage. In so doing, Alan has made a list of recommended technical manuals to purchase for our library in order for it to be current. The BOD’s approved the list and the club voted to purchase the suggest-ed manuals over the summer. By September, our library should be up to date and ,as always, is free to members; just sign and date the log in/out card.

The Model A Ford Foundation, Inc. (MAFFI) has been planning to build a museum for years and in April a bulldozer was on the construction site to start excavation. The steel for the building is in place and in September the building will be com-plete. Grand opening is scheduled for May 2013. As with many activities like this, various fund rais-ing promotions are put in place to support con-struction, like purchasing a brick. We have pur-chased a brick that will be engraved with “Shade Tree A’s, Augusta, GA”. The next time you are near Gilmore, MI, stop in and spend some time.

Have a safe trip, Craig

PENNY PINSON HOT DOG DAY May 12 near Greenwood SC

Those of you who did not attend missed a

wonderful tour. The weather was perfect, the loca-tion outstanding , the picnic delicious, and the company delightful. Sorry you missed it.

Three cars from Aiken and one from Hephzibah met near Trenton for the trip to Emer-ald Farm near Greenwood for a picnic sponsored by the Old 96 Club. Some members of the Pal-metto A’s also made the trip from the Columbia area.

As soon as we drove into the gate we were wel-comed and directed to park on the grass so that other visitors wouldn’t damage our cars. We were told to make ourselves at home and I believe they meant it.

Emerald Farm is a working goat farm and some of the milk from the Saanen goats is made into soap and sold on site in a gift shop. The soap maker welcomed us into her workroom and point-ed out the Model A-shaped bars she had created in anticipation of our visit.

We visited a store selling antiques, wine and beer-making supplies, health food, model train supplies, and other interesting stuff. Upstairs was a model train layout and outside, a miniature CSX locomotive pulling an open passenger car around the farm. Those tending the store were quite inter-esting and seemed to truly be glad we were visit-ing.

We saw goats, llamas, chickens with tiny chicks, ducks, cats, and dogs, cows, and some pea-cocks who were putting on an impressive show for their lady friends; one had a fan that probably was 8 feet across!

The Old 96 Club supplied hotdogs with all the fixings and others brought sides and dessert. This is an event not to be missed next year. A big

“thank you” to the Old 96 Club.

JOHNSTON PEACH BLOSSOM FESTIVAL PARADE

May 5, Johnston SC Eight STA cars gathered in Johnston, SC on a

sunny, warm spring day to celebrate the peach blossoms (six cars actually made it through the pa-rade). Because of the unseasonably warm winter and spring, instead of blossoms, we passed acres and acres of ripening peaches instead of blossoms.

Nevertheless, the crowds packed the streets and cheered the STA’s who were followed by the hillbilly Model A group with their tin-can hubcaps, pots and pans strapped to the running boards, bot-tles of moonshine, and dead possums hanging from the bumpers. Fortunately there were a couple of other entries between the two groups so folks could tell one group from the other.

The most memorable parts of the day were the 5 or 6 “roadside technical seminars” and Palmer the Wonder Dog who sat proudly behind the wheel listening as everyone gave an opinion on what the problem was. Jim and Sheila stayed be-hind during the parade to help Walker get his car going, only to have is conk out again. The good news: once it got started, it practically flew back to Aiken leaving the rest of the cars scrambling to keep up.

Some of the group ended up at the Stop Light Deli in Aiken for lunch before heading their sepa-rate ways.

If you weren’t there, you missed a lot of fun

SHADE TREE A'S BOARD OF DIRECTOR'S MINUTES

May 7th, 2012, 7:00 PM The president, Craig McMullin, called the meet-

ing to order. It was decided to bring a motion before the

membership to request money to purchase publica-tions to update the library. All existing materials have been checked and organized by Alan Stewart.

Several items of business were discussed. The club hats, ordered by Bob Collier, have arrived and are for sale at $12.00 each. The new roster of 74 members has been published. We have all the tech-nical programs set up for the year. The refreshment roster is filled for the year. The ads for a full sheet in the newsletter have been paid for. Rachel has the newsletter in great shape, thank you.

The activity calendar was discussed and we have changed some events, so see the newsletter. There were a lot of discussions on attendance at club events and parades. Please increase your participa-tion. The board decided to list the events in the newsletter with no mention of Non-Club Events. They will be Other Events. This way they can all be club events when we show up.

We have a brick with our club name on it in the walk at the new museum under construction.

The next BOD meeting will be July 2nd, 2012.

Please read the newsletter often to remember the right dates and EVENTS.

Respectfully submitted Doug Wilson, Secretary

THE NEXT CROP OF MODEL A DRIVERS

The STA’s have been invited to display some

Model A’s at the annual City of Aiken “Touch a Truck Day” on July 21st from 9am – 12 noon at the Weeks Center. This event is designed to allow kids (and their parents) a chance to get up close to emergency vehicles, construction vehicles, police cars and the like. This is a chance to promote our hobby to another generation or two.

MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES May 14th, 2012

President Craig McMullin called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.

Steve Young demonstrated a jet engine and ran it thru the sequence, very noisy.

There were 31 members present. No members were fined for lack of name badges. Walter Mobley, Paul Felburg and Tommy Gilley were guests.

Dates were given for May birthdays; see the newsletter.

A motion to approve the April minutes as written was made by Richard and seconded by Ralph. They were approved.

Sam Mason is recovering more every day. Richard Dunevent’s gave the Treasurer’s re-

port. No news from national director; he’s still out

of town. Old business and past events can be found in

the newsletter. New business and future events will be in the

newsletter, please read and participate. The renewals for ads have filled a page. Show and tell was a ring nut wrench and a

windshield wiper pressure tester. The program was the jet engine demonstra-

tion. Refreshments were provided by Morse,

Neitzke, and McMullin. The next meeting will be at Dunevent’s gar-

age on June 4 @ 7:00 PM (not our normal meet-ing date). SEE NEWSLETTER

The meeting was adjourned with everyone having a good time.

AIKEN’S MEMORIAL DAY PARADE “Largest Memorial Day parade in SC’- Channel 12 News

Pat Roberts

We had an excellent turnout for Aiken’s Me-

morial Day parade May 26. Thirteen cars took part, including those of Sharon Stewart, Larry Lamb, Richard Dunevent, Jim McPherson, Greg Jones, Don Cerefin, Tom Roberts (3), Jim Dover, Ken Jackson, George Gordon and Eric Shogren. Following the parade Dolores and Don Cerefin invited us to their Cedar Creek home for light re-freshments.

Six WWII vets rode with us in the A's. Sharon and Alan Stewart’s guest, Posey Jacobs, was in the Navy, Pacific Theater and served on a minesweep-er from New Guinea; he is credited with taking out a Zero during a kamikaze attack in the battle of Okinawa. Tom Roberts’ passenger, Dick Philipp, was in the Navy, too, serving on the USS Appala-chian, an amphibious flagship which later served as the floating press headquarters for Bikini atomic bomb tests.

Mel Knowles rode with Dave Rosling. Mel was in the Naval Beach Battalion; at Okinawa, Sai-pan, and the Philippines, and saw the flag being raised (twice) in Iwo Jima. Eric Shogren’s passen-ger, Dick Witter, was with MacArthur in Manila (Philippines) and recently was on one of the HoSC SC Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. He missed the Battle of the Bulge because of a broken leg right after graduation and played baseball for the camp team and, later, a pro team, too!

Al Dalimonte, Don Cerefin’s passenger, served in the Marines. STA member Jim Dover drove his own "A". Jim was an Army paratrooper; he was in Europe and involved in the liberation of Europe. The crowd at the parade clapped each time a car with one of the vets passed by, showing their ap-preciation for the vets and their service.

17TH ANNUAL SOCIAL SECURITY RUN Alan Stewart

The Shade Tree A’s were well represented at

the 17th Annual Social Security Run in LaGrange, GA which started Thursday May 17th and ran through Sunday, May 20th. STA attendees were Anne & Jim Beck, Richard & Frankie Dunevent, Tony & Carol Gazette, Jim & Sheila McPherson, and Alan & Sharon Stewart.

There were 86 cars in attendance with a large number of Model A’s, a Rolls Royce, a couple of Lincolns, two Pierce Arrow’s, a Marmon, and quite a few Model T’s.

The event kicked off with a BBQ dinner on West Point Thursday evening and a short scenic tour (a lot longer if you did not see the sign for Alabama Highway 266 like several of us).

Friday we took a tour to the Wild Animal Park and fed the animals and received copious amounts of saliva from some of the more grateful stars of the show. The highlight was the Giraffe that stole food by sticking his head completely in the bus and taking whatever he wanted. This tour ended with a leisurely ride through Warm Springs past FDR’s Little White House and a return to LaGrange.

Saturday included a poker run through Wood-bury, Meansville, and a stop for lunch at the Gar-den Patch in Barnesville. We were greeted by the Mayor at the restaurant and by a lot of friendly people. The tour of Barnesville included a police escort. The winning overall average tour time for the 115 miles was 3 hours, 48 minutes and 20 se-conds. The Shade Tree A’s are not poker players and came up short on the Poker Drawing.

Carol Gazette captured the prize for the win-ning female costume. We all enjoyed a Mexican fiesta accompanied by entertainment including a

bullfight, singing, and a more-than-hilarious skit perform by Tony, Carol, Jim, Ann, Jim M. and Sheila. It was a really fun event, good food, and a really pleasant drive.

Additional photos will be posted on the STA website.

The Aiken gang will be hosting the STA’s in
