We want to give a big thanks to everyone who helped make our auction a success. We rose close to $1200 and Paul Schrock is insisting we allow him to contribute to the total since he and Helen couldn’t be present. Thank you Paul. A special thank you to Chuck Miller for volunteering his services again this year. We

would be lost without him and we hope you keep him in mind when anyone you know needs an auctioneer. Thanks also go out to Frank Snyder, Bob Blackford, Larry Steinhilber and Charlie Barnette for assisting Chuck during the sale and to Judy Norris and Gail Miller for helping sort the sale tickets and collecting the money. We had a great turnout with over 100 people and ten visiting chapter represented! Don’t forget June’s gathering will be held one week early on June 13 due to the Buckeye Rally and the cost of the breakfast will increase to $7.0 0. No door prizes until September.

• Sunday, June 13 – Monthly gathering followed by Mis s Ohio parade. Must be lined up by 1:00 pm Parade will start at 2:00 pm Lineup place will be announced arson as we get it.

• June 17/19 - Buckeye Rally, Wooster fairgrounds. Gates open at noon on June 17. Rally ends late Saturday night.

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS

JOE & JACKIE WOODMANSEE

Jackie and I along with Chapter B Couple of the Year Larry and Cheryl Moore met with four bikes and a car with members from F2 (Elyria) at Bob Evans in Wooster at 8pm on Saturday, June 29. Don and Kathy were to ride also but had tire

problems at the last minute. It was a beautiful day for a 344 mile bike ride. We took route 30 all the way thru Pittsburg and on to Burnt Cabins where we camped for the weekend. The campground was quite nice and about 50 miles short of Gettysburg which made for a nice ride Sunday morning. It is always nice when you’re with friends. We took an air conditioned bus tour of the battleground which I must say was very informative. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer all the questions he was asked. After the tour, some of us went to the new and improved Park Visitor Center for a 30 minute documentary on the event followed by 15-20 minute, 360 degree surround, 3-D sight and sounds of how the final battle was fought. It made you feel like you were right next to the soldiers. Afterwards we gathered for supper in one of the older taverns in town. After that we rode back to the campground for fun, laughter and friendship. Monday morning we headed back at about 9:30 am for what seemed like a long ride. We returned the same as we went on route 30. The weather cooperated until Jackie and I was about one mile from home then we got soaked. We had a great time and this is a trip we would like to take with Chapter B. Total mileage round trip was 787 miles. Until we meet again, ride hard, ride safe and have fun.riding safe and we will see you soon! Joe & JackieJoe & JackieJoe & JackieJoe & Jackie

ASS’t CHAPTER EDUCATOR

DICK STOOPS

Dropping the bike. You hear all kinds of stories about it like the saying "There's two kinds of bikers, those that have dropped a bike and those who will". Of course this is usually said by someone who has already dropped his, or hers. I know the feeling personally, having dropped a couple of bikes myself. I'd estimate that most bikers have dropped one, or two, but don't let that kind of thinking make you feel that it's inevitable. It's not. There are a few steps riders can take to reduce the risk of, or preventing dropping the bike. In the MSF Basic Rider Course, the students are recommended to look straight ahead (not down at the pavement) when coming to a stop, take a giant step with your left foot at the stop and make sure your handlebars are "square with the horizon". This means that you should not be leaned over, or have the handlebars turned at all when stopping. These techniques will help your stop be a smooth and safe one. But, we all know that sometimes, 'stuff ' happens. If your bike ends up on its side, there are a couple of techniques for picking it up if you happen to be solo. Both techniques are based on the person using their legs and leverage, not necessarily brute strength to lift the bike upright. If the bike is down on its right side, here's what you can do.

• First, turn the engine off by using the cut-off switch. • Turn the handlebars as far to the right as possible. • Put the side stand down on the left side of the bike to keep it from going over too far once you have

put it upright. • With your back toward the bike, squat down (bend those knees!), grasp the right handgrip with your

left hand, put your right hand under or near the seat of the bike (the lower your handhold, the better).

• Put your rear end on the seat, your knees should be bent. Plant your feet solidly on the ground and take small steps backward. Don't pull up; push backwards using your feet and legs for power. Slowly walk backwards using small steps. As you feel the bike start to move, keep pushing with your legs. Push, push, push. You'll feel a lot of resistance, but use your legs for leverage and keep pushing back. Once the bike is upright, carefully turn around and grasp both handgrips before resting the bike on its side stand.

• Check the bike for damage before remounting and starting the engine. If the bike is on its left side, there is another technique that you can use. All of the procedures are the same as above (turn the handlebars fully to the left) but when you grasp the left handgrip, you can squeeze the clutch fully. When you start to walk slowly backwards, you will feel the bike start to roll. Walk with the roll and let it help you get the bike upright. When you are almost upright, turn and get control of both handgrips. Then put down the side stand and lean the bike on the stand. Take a deep breath (and maybe say a bad word, or two) and then try to figure out why you ended up on the ground. Practice your techniques so that you stay upright, where all the fun is. This article is an excerpt from one written by Dinah (Walsh) Meister who is an MSF certified Rider Coach and a contributing writer for Ridin' On magazine.

NEWSLETTER EDITORS

JIM & CAROL CULLER

Hi Folks: We had a great turnout for our Annual Auction with another great job by Auctioneer/Chapter B supporter Chuck Miller . Remember him if you need an

auctioneer in the future. Paul Schrock and Robby Kennedy are doing better, but still have some recovery time. Carol had her

surgery May 14th and will be riding the bike soon. As a matter of fact to the Ohio Rally. The Buckeye Rally is coming up on June 17th, 18th and 19th. We always have a great time so hope to see a lot of you there.

Karl Kinstle had his surgery and is back home recuperating. Karl was life-flighted to Cleveland Clinic May 24th with a tear in his aorta. Spoke with Heather and Karl is doing better but still has pain. Karl’s address is: 7541 Olivesburg-Fitchville Road, Greenwich, Ohio 44837. Clarence & Shirleen Walter are riding a new Spyder and Sue McAvoy is riding a shiny red Stallion – Cool! Must be great getting that kind of Birthday Gift.

Ted gave us a seminar at our meeting on texting while riding our bikes. We thought this was kind of strange, however, I saw my first motorcyclist texting (on a Goldwing) about a week later on Plymouth-Springmill Road in front of Cheddars and Jim came home today and stated he saw a rider on a fat boy motorcycle going about 35 MPH about dead center of Myers Road - texting. Needless to say, he was not using his safe riding skills. So, I guess it’s being done – sorry to say. These are riders asking to go down.

This is a picture of Matt Kerr, Dan and Phyllis

Kerr’s son in Iraq. He thought it was great that the

Chapter sent items to him and the other soldiers.

JUNE FEATURED “MEMBER” ARTICLE

Robby and I have been married 61 years and are the proud parents of four daughters (the youngest died of cancer at the age of 50), nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren. Our son-in-law in Florida has nicknamed us the “Vagabonds”. Robby bought our first motorcycle, a 1978 Honda 750 automatic, and rode it to work when the gas prices were starting to rise. Then we started riding it for pleasure and went on our first long ride, a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway, with six couples from work and stayed at a Holiday Inn. Numerous things happened on this “FIRST” trip: we got caught in a thunder storm and couldn’t get our rain suits on in time; the ceiling in our hotel bathroom fell down into the tub and toilet

and we had to be moved to another room. Even then, the couple that we started riding with asked us to wear long sleeves, boots and gloves – a smart couple. The steel workers, at that time, received two, three and four days off together giving us a lot of good riding time. In 1983, we attended our first GWRRA Rally at Bellefontaine and met many people we knew such as my mom and dad’s neighbor (also a winger). Then in 1984 the Rally was held at Mohican and we helped out in the hospitality room. How many miles on the motorcycle? Four trips to the West Coast, visiting such places as Branson, Missouri; the Alamo; Mexico; Las Vegas, Nevada (made a little money there); St. George , Utah , (where Robbie and Charlie found dollars floating down the gutter); Crater Lake (where sleeping in tents isn’t so much fun when the frost covers the camper); Mt. St. Helen, (after the volcano erupted) where I bought a bell made from the ashes; Washington State where we saw the hopps growing; and the space needle. Have we ever traveled by ourselves: Oh yes, over 100,000 miles. These trips included: many trips to Florida to stay with our daughters and their children. In Florida we met with Florida H-2 Chapter and went on rides with them; explored the state on our own; went to the coast and saw the space shuttle go up many times; the Natchez Trace in Mississippi to see the “Miramar” being enclosed in an air conditioned building for all ages to enjoy; Iowa State Rally and good German food; and Michigan when it was two lane roads around the lake and wild blueberries grew everywhere. One trip we will never forget was with Glenn & Gail Miller and several other Chapter Members to see the Nautilus in Maine. We gladly stopped several times a day so Glenn could do his dialysis. We felt it was wonderful that he would even attempt such a trip. There, we even visited our granddaughter, her husband (who were in the Navy) and two great grandsons. On our trip to Nova Scotia, we even set-up our tent in the rain after getting off the boat and were invited to a small church for supper. Riding the Goldwing has made traveling and meeting new people an adventure on every trip. We have traveled many, many places and no matter what happened, enjoyed every minute and treasure the wonderful memories we have collected of the places we rode to, the people we rode with, and the people we met along the way. Riding has made our life an adventure.

Robby Robby Robby Robby and Lucy Kennedyand Lucy Kennedyand Lucy Kennedyand Lucy Kennedy (We would like to feature an article, at least bi-monthly, in the Newsletter on a member from our Chapter) Contact Carol to let her know if you would like to write one. This will give our members a chance to know your adventures and how you came about riding your motorcycle. We would love to enjoy them and to get to know you better.
