EditorialEngage for success

An engaged workforce feels empowered

and aligned with the organisation’s values, and

understands how the role of each individual

contributes towards the company’s vision and

mission. Correspondingly, a company with

an engaged workforce can gain a significant

competitive advantage. According to a recent

study by Deloitte on human capital trends, raising

the level of employee engagement is one of the

top challenges that many companies around the

world face.

Keppel considers people as its greatest asset. We

focus on developing and engaging our people and

creating a work culture where all employees can

grow and reach their full potential.

Keppel’s leaders make it a point to regularly engage

Keppelites, explain to them the company’s strategy

and involve them in writing the next chapter of

the Keppel story.

The second annual Global Keppelites Forum

held on 28 January 2016 was a key Group-wide

platform, where CEO of Keppel Corporation

Mr Loh Chin Hua shared with Keppelites the

Group’s performance, its key strategies and the

expectations that the management has of every

Keppelite (see story on pages 16 to 19).

The forum brought together almost 3,000 staff

in over 70 locations around the world, who

participated either on-site or virtually through an

interactive webcast. Mr Loh reiterated Keppel’s

unique strengths as a multi-business conglomerate

and how Keppelites could respond with agility to

the challenges facing the company.

To encourage open and transparent communication,

the Group’s leadership team candidly fielded

questions from Keppelites through a live webcast.

The encouraging participation rate and candour

exhibited by both management and staff reflect

the willingness of both parties to engage in fruitful,

open communication.

Besides the Global Keppelites Forum, Keppel

organises regular innovation conventions to

reward ideas from the ground and promote a

culture of empowerment. Members of Keppel

Young Leaders, a group comprising high-potential

young employees, are given opportunities to work

on high-impact, cross-business unit assignments

under the mentorship of senior management.

Keppelites are also invited to participate in regular

employee engagement surveys, whose results

are studied closely by senior management to

understand employee sentiments.

As Keppel continues to institutionalise programmes

to drive engagement and empowerment,

Keppelites should share their views and suggestions

constructively, taking into account both the

aspirations of individual staff and the needs of

the company.

Through such efforts, we will forge a collaborative

environment that inspires a high level of

engagement and performance.

Keppel to consolidate and grow asset management businessOn 25 January 2016, Keppel Corporation announced a significant restructuring exercise to consol idate i t s i n te re s t s i n A lpha Investment Partners, the trustee-manager of Keppel Infrastructure Trust, and the managers of Keppel DC REIT and Keppel REIT under Keppel Capital Holdings (Keppel Capital).

Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation, said, “Creating and developing high-quality real estate and infrastructure assets as well as stabilising and monetising them to generate strong cash flow and recurring income are integral parts of Keppel’s business model.

“Keppel’s asset management businesses currently manage $26 b i l l ion of qua l i t y assets and contr ibuted $60 million of profits in 2015. The consolidation under Keppel Capital is part of our continuing plan to grow our assets under management and expand our capital platform for co-investing.”

The proposed consolidation wil l benefit the Keppel Group by strengthening the Group’s capital recycling platform and abi l i ty to make prudent and timely i n v e s t m e n t s w i t h a n

expanded capital base and without relying solely on its balance sheet.

I t w i l l a l s o i m p r o v e the performance of the Subsidiaries and the funds, REITs and business trusts that they manage through centralising certain non-regulated support functions and c rea t ing a l a rge r platform which will enhance recruitment and retention of talent, and sharing of best practices.

This will improve the returns to the Keppel Group, and to other investors and unitholders, from their investments in the funds and unitholdings in the REITs and business trust.

The proposed consolidation will also improve the Group’s stable, recurring income

from management fees. Keppel Corporation intends to consolidate its interests in these Subsidiaries and report them under a new consol idated report ing segment as part of i ts investments arm.

Ms Christina Tan, presently MD of A lpha , w i l l be appointed CEO-designate of Keppel Capital. Ms Tan possesses over 20 years of experience in investing and fund management spanning the US, Europe and Asia, and has been with Alpha since its inception in 2003. Under her leadership, Alpha has grown its assets under management to over $12 billion today.

The proposed consolidation is subject to board approval and (if required) shareholder and/or unitholder approval

of the relevant Keppel Group entities, as well as approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and other relevant regulatory approvals.

Subject to obtaining the relevant approvals, Keppel C o r p o r a t i o n a i m s t o complete the proposed consolidation by 2H 2016.

After the completion of the proposed consolidation, Keppel Corporation may consider increasing its scope to include regulated activities relating to investments and asset management. This increase in scope would be undertaken after obtaining the necessary licences and approvals from MAS. keppelite

N-KOM delivers first liftboat in QatarNakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM), the joint venture shipyard between Qatar’s Nakilat and Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), successfully delivered on 12 January 2016 its first liftboat unit, Al Safliya, to Qatari rig operator Gulf Drilling International (GDI), subsidiary of Gulf International Services, in a safe and timely manner without any lost-time incidents.

Built to the ORCA 2500 design developed by Keppel O&M’s design arm, Bennett Offshore, Al Safliya is the

first liftboat to be wholly constructed in Qatar at the Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma shipyard. The self-propelled and elevating unit is customised for operations in the Middle East and North Africa regions in water depths of up to 65 metres.

The ORCA 2500 class liftboat is equipped with four tubular legs, a unique 200-tonne leg encircling crane and a 50-tonne pedestal crane, a large open deck space of around 800 sm, a helideck, and accommodation capacity for 130 persons.

Al Safliya, the first liftboat to be wholly constructed in Qatar, is built to the ORCA 2500 design developed by Keppel O&M’s design arm, Bennett Offshore

It can undertake a wide range of services such as well servicing, commissioning, m a i n t e n a n c e a n d decommissioning of offshore platforms. The l i ftboat also allows for a specially designed gangway bridge to be used for emergency and other safety purposes.

Bennett Offshore has also developed other liftboat de s i gn s , s u ch a s t he ORCA 1500 and ORCA 3500, with varying operational a n d a c c o m m o d a t i o n capacities to suit its clients’ requirements.

Liftboats have increasingly been shown to be a more eff ic ient alternat ive to traditional non-self-propelled and self-elevating units. Its ability to mobilise without the assistance of support vessels makes it versatile and cost-effective.

By customising liftboats with different tonnage cranes on deck, they can undertake the maintenance of most shallow water oil and gas fields and wind farms, as well as various workover drilling operations and well intervention applications. keppelite

Strengthening China strategyTo deepen understanding o f C h i n a ’s c h a n g i n g landscape , s t rengthen t h e G r o u p ’s C h i n a strategy and explore new opportunities, a workshop on China was held on 12 February 2016.

Over 50 senior management and key China business unit representatives gathered a t Keppe l Leade r sh ip Institute to discuss China’s macroeconomic landscape and emerging trends. While China’s economy has slowed down, there are still many bright spots which the Group can leverage.

Welcoming the participants, Keppel Corporation CEO Mr Loh Chin Hua reiterated the importance of China as a key market for the Group and encouraged business units to explore how they could work together to seek new business opportunities by providing solutions that meet China’s needs.

Recognising that China is developing very rapidly, Mr Loh urged participants to view China through evolving lenses. Beyond the Group’s tradit ional business activities, China can increasingly also be

a source of innovation, funding or investment.

Keppel Corporation’s Group Strategy & Development team, together with various business units, shared on key trends and opportunities for growth in China. The business unit representatives also presented on current operations, their experiences doing business in China, and long-term strategies, i n c l ud ing ad j a cenc i e s opportunities.

Contributing insight as a guest panelist was Mr Tay Choon Chong, Managing

Director of Vertex Venture, w h o j o i n e d K e p p e l ’s senior management on a panel to discuss China’s consumption, innovations and opportunities arising from China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ strategy.

Through robust discussions, attendees deepened their unde r s tand ing o f the operat ions of Keppel ’s various businesses in China, and discussed plans to foster collaboration and build a wider and stronger Keppel network in China.

Dur ing the workshop, Mr Wong Wai Meng, CEO of Keppel Data Centres, who recently joined the Group in January 2016, said that he was impressed by Keppel’s array of businesses in China and the Group’s diverse set of strengths and capabilities. “The workshop helped me to better understand how we can ‘hunt as a pack’ not only to add value, but also to create new business opportunities in the Chinese market.”

Keppel is one of the earliest Singapore companies to enter the Chinese market, starting with its first foray in Shekou, Guangdong, in 1984, when FELS, now renamed Keppel FELS, led a Singapore consortium in a joint venture to support an offshore oil exploration in the South China Sea. keppelite

The management team from across Keppel Offshore & Marine gathered at the biannual strategy meeting to discuss how the company will continue to forge ahead

across the Keppel Group’s other business units.

Mr Chow Yew Yuen, CEO of Keppel O&M, reiterated that despite all the challenges brought on by low oil prices and numerous shipyards worldwide reporting heavy losses, Keppel O&M remains one of the industry’s top performers.

An example of Keppel O&M seizing opportunities to grow its capabil it ies during the downturn is its ongoing acquisition of the

LETOURNEAU™ offshore rigs business, noted Mr Chow, adding that the company would also explore leveraging i ts offshore expertise to provide solutions for other markets.

Taking on this challenge during the meeting was a team from Keppel O&M’s technology outfit in Houston, Texas, who presented on ways to leverage synergies to develop new solutions in areas such as the gas value chain, offshore wind and subsea technologies. keppelite

Keeping agile for the future“To remain competitive, we must be able to adjust and adapt well in the changing env i ronmen t we f i nd ourselves in.”

This was the key piece of advice that guest speaker Mr Choo Chiau Beng, former CEO of Keppel Corporation, shared at the 30th Chua Chor Teck Memorial Lecture held on 17 February 2016 at Singapore Polytechnic.

Jointly organised by Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), the Society of Naval Archi tects and Mar ine Engineers, Singapore and the Singapore Maritime Academy, the lecture was themed “Singapore’s Marine and Offshore Industry – What the past 45 years can teach us about the future”. In the audience were about 370 professionals, students and retirees.

Emphasising that agility and innovation are key to triumphing over current challenges in the cyclical offshore and marine industry, Mr Choo stressed how Keppel has constantly adapted to changes – whether building its first speculative rig in 1987 or entering the property business.

The lecture was followed by a robust dialogue session moderated by Mr Lim Boon Heng, Chairman of Temasek

Holdings, who recounted the period of volatility in the 1980s and how local

Mr Loh a lso reassured Keppe l i t e s abou t the company ’s fu ture and encouraged them to continue to work hard, innovate and to face challenges with Keppel’s trademark Can Do! spirit.

CANDID EXCHANGE Keppelite shares some of the highlights from the question and answer session, which was moderated by Ms Wang Look Fung, Consultant to Keppel Corporation.

On career prospects for mid and junior staff LCH: Wherever possible, we want to groom internally. We have to ensure that we have the best person for the job. If you look at the team here, a significant number of us have been with Keppel for a long time. But bringing in people from outside also brings a fresh perspective. The key for us is to create more opportunities for the people inside at the junior or middle level to grow. There are plenty of opportunities for all.

CHC: If I look at this group, I am surrounded by leaders who are giants in their own right. They are well-respected by their peers and well-

regarded by their industries. I think this is a testament to the Group’s ability to develop and groom talent within the organisation. The leadership team continues to spend a lot of time and resources on succession planning. It is an exciting time for young employees in the Group.

I th ink the Group wi l l continue to do well in its ability to retain talent.

On work-life balanceCYY: I’ve been in this industry for the last 37 years, 35 of which have been with Keppel. What is important is that you must enjoy what you do. When you have the passion for what you do, you will get satisfaction from it. At the end of the day, that is how you find your own work-life balance.

I have a principle: for anyone who applies for leave, I will approve regardless. Because I believe that if you apply

for leave, you have a reason to do so. It is about the individual. If you engage with your work and have the passion for it, that is the most important thing.

On preventing groupthinkLCH: I don’t see groupthink. I have been in meetings where there are very robust d i s cus s ions and huge disagreements, where chairs have actually been kicked. But once the discussion has taken place and the decision is made, everyone closes ranks and moves on as one. That has been the Keppel way and should continue to be so.

AWG: When I conduct discussions, I ask ‘What do you think is the solution?’ I will put out an idea and encourage my staff to discuss. We want to cultivate an atmosphere where staff do not feel compelled to just say yes.

OTG: If you employ people that think alike to you, then I think over time, the organisation will be weakened. Independent views are important.

TP: When the bosses say yes to something, it does not mean that they did not first conduct discussions on the matter. Disagreement and different viewpoints have often already been taken onboard. keppelite

Spurring Innovations

Innovative ice-class designsFor its groundbreaking efforts in furthering ice-class vessel technology, Keppel Singmarine scored silver awards for its ice-class supply and ice-class multi-purpose duty rescue vessel designs at the annual Keppel Offshore and Marine (Keppel O&M) Innovation Competition 2015.

Contracted to build the vessels for a subsidiary of Bumi Armada, Keppel Singmarine developed the proprietary designs at a time when there were no off-the-shelf ice-class vessel designs capable of meeting operational requirements in the North Caspian Sea.

Due to low salinity and extreme temperatures, the ice-class supply and ice-class multi-purpose duty rescue vessels operating in the North Caspian Sea are required to break through open floating first-year ice of 600 to 800mm (RMRS ARC4) thick and 800 to 1,000mm (RMRS ARC5) th ick in shallow draft conditions, respectively. In addition, the vessel width should not be more than 17 m in order to navigate through the Volga-Caspian canal.

Aiming to fill this gap in the ice-class vessel market, Keppel O&M’s ship design and development arm, Marine

Technology Development (MTD), rose to the challenge by developing proprietary designs for the ice-class supply and ice-class multi-purpose duty rescue vessels.

The project team spent eight months creating a new design for a shallow draft ice-class vessel equipped with robust ice-breaking capabilities and excellent calm water performance. T h e n e w d e s i g n w a s able to meet the unique requirements of the customer on the vessel’s draught, width, transit height and guaranteed deadweight.

In September 2015, Keppel

Singmarine successfully delivered two ice-class supply vessels and one ice-class multipurpose duty rescue vessel to Bumi Armada on schedule and with a perfect safety record. These were the first-ever ice-class vessels to feature Keppel Singmarine’s proprietary designs.

Reinforcing its position as an industry leader in the design and construction of ice-class vessels, Keppel Singmarine is currently constructing an ice-class multi-purpose vessel for New Orient Marine Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-based Maritime Construction Services SA. keppelite

Keppelites Around the World

As someone who readily embraces new experiences, Felix Allen Jerome seized the chance to be seconded to Qatar in March 2007 as part of the opening team for Keppel Offshore & Marine’s (Keppel O&M) joint venture shipyard, Nakilat-Keppel O&M (N-KOM).

F o r A l l e n , i t w a s a n opportunity of a lifetime. After all, the pace at which N-KOM has developed since its humble beginnings is testament to the Can Do! spirit firmly etched within Keppel’s DNA.

Growing beyond Singapore shores“Back in 2007, the land on which the shipyard is situated had not even been reclaimed yet. Now, looking back at how much we have accomplished since we arrived in Qatar gives me immense satisfaction and pride,” he enthused.

Jointly developed by Nakilat, the world’s leading transporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and Keppel O&M, the 50-ha N-KOM was constructed on the north-eastern tip of Qatar within the Ras Laffan Industrial City. Today, N-KOM boasts some of the most

technologically advanced equipment for the repair, conversion and construction of a wide range of marine and offshore vessels and structures.

Now managing the inner workings of N-KOM as GM of Operations, Allen has amassed nine years of overseas experience at the shipyard. During this time, he has managed several groundbreaking projects, such as the recent delivery of the shipyard’s first liftboat, Al Safliya, to Gulf Drilling International on time, on

target and with a good safety record.

Allen firmly believes his decision to uproot and try something new has allowed him to grow on both a personal and professional level. He explained, “Having to adapt to local customs and regulations brings a unique set of challenges, but the exposure and experience gained from work ing i n a fo re ign environment is priceless. The trials and tribulations one will undoubtedly undergo only serve to make you more resilient and adaptable, and these traits are assets to any organisation.”

In his leisure time, Allen enjoys catching the latest blockbusters at the movie theatre, shopping and travelling to spectacular tourist sites within the region. “The apartment where I stay is located within central Doha, about 70km south of the shipyard, and there are lots of fantastic Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants in the nearby mall,” he shared. When asked what advice he would dispense to Keppelites who aspire to try an overseas stint, Allen simply said, “Go for it! You won’t regret the experience!” keppelite

FESTIVE DELIVERIES Reach ing ou t to 100 beneficiaries, 30 Keppel Volunteers participated in Community Chest’s Fu Dai (festive packages) campaign 23 January 2016, which brought the community together to show care and concern for the less fortunate amidst the Lunar New Year festivities.

Apart from contributing donations, companies and individuals went the extra mile by packing and delivering essential household items and necessities to frail elderly and families in need. The senior beneficiaries were grateful for the Fu Dai as some of them have difficulty even walking to purchase daily necessities.

Shared volunteer Wayne Siek, Construction Manager (Production) at Keppel FELS, “I am grateful to Keppel Volunteers for organising this meaningful event, which allowed me to do my little part in helping out the less fortunate. It was heart-warming and humbling to see the recipients’ smiles when we delivered the goodie bags. I also appreciated the

opportunity to interact with Keppelites from across the Group as we worked on this good cause together.”

HANDS-ON FUN Separately, Keppel Volunteers helped senior friends find a spring in their step by putting their creativity to work at a ceramic-making workshop held at the Jalan Bahar Clay Studios on 27 February 2016.

Apart from unearthing their creative talents, the seniors and volunteers also enjoyed an educational tour of a traditional kiln based on a Chinese design that dates back thousands of years.

It was a truly hands-on and rewarding experience for the volunteers as they learnt both kiln molding skills and the art of conversation with the elderly. keppelite

Keppel and BG Group to jointly supply LNG bunker First delivery of LNG bunker expected to commence in 2017, in line with plans to develop Singapore as a leading LNG hub.

Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M), through its wholly-owned subsidiary KS Investments Pte Ltd (KSI), and BG Group plc (BG Group) have been selected to supply Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunker to vessels in the Port of Singapore.

The joint bid submitted by Keppel O&M and BG Group for the LNG bunker supplier licence is one of the two top bids selected by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The awarding of the licence is in line with the Port of Singapore’s plans to launch the LNG Bunkering Pilot Programme in 2017.

With the granting of the licence, Keppel O&M and BG Group will work on forming a 50-50 jo int venture to deliver an end-to-end bunkering solution using LNG sourced from BG Group’s diversified LNG portfolio and leveraging Keppel O&M’s expertise in LNG vessel servicing.

Mr Steve Hill, Executive Vice President, Global Energy Marketing and Shipping, BG Group, said, “Singapore is one of the world’s most important strategic ports and we are excited about the prospect of supplying LNG as a fuel for ships in this key market, with first

delivery expected in 2017. LNG produces considerably l ower em i s s i ons than conventional marine fuel and can significantly reduce a vessel’s environmental impact. We look forward to working with Keppel O&M on the safe and reliable supply of this cleaner fuel source and the ongoing development of Singapore as a leading hub for LNG in Asia.”

Mr Chow Yew Yuen, CEO, Keppel O&M, said, “The move into LNG bunkering is in line with Keppel’s strategy to provide solutions for the global LNG market, and we are happy to partner BG Group in this exciting n e w v e n t u re . A s t h e exclusive gas aggregator for Singapore, BG Group has the experience of importing LNG into Singapore where they already have a ready supply on Jurong Island.

“Together with Keppel’s years of experience and expertise in servicing vessels including gas carriers, we will be able to provide strong support to MPA in its goal to develop Singapore into a key LNG bunkering hub in Asia. As the shipping industry’s demand for green solutions

continues to rise, we will also be able to help meet the needs for sustainable shipping with our growing LNG solutions, such as tug designs with dual-fuel diesel LNG engines and the retrofitting of vessel engines to run on LNG.”

Keppel O&M’s experience in providing LNG solutions encompasses not only repair services for gas carriers, but also complex offshore conversions. Keppel O&M successful ly completed the world’s first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) in 2008, which was followed by two more similar units, and was the first shipyard to undertake the conversion of a Floating Liquefaction Facility in 2014.

To focus further efforts on solutions for the LNG ma rke t , Keppe l O&M set up a new design and t e c h n o l o g y a r m , G a s Technology Development, in 2015. Through its other design and technology arm, Marine Technology Development, Keppel O&M has developed a range of designs for LNG vessels including barges, carriers, and dual-fuel tugs that can run on diesel and LNG. keppelite
