Framework

In line with our planned expansion in the capital, we gained a place on the London Universities Purchasing Consortium. This not-for-profit professional buying organisation offers procurement solutions to universities and colleges in and around London, as well as other national not-for-profit, public and charity organisations from sectors including arts, sciences and education.

South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College’s national framework agreement is available for all academies, schools and colleges still under Local Authority control. The framework is also open to use by all other public sector bodies in the UK. Billed as the alternative procurement option to the Government’s Education Funding Agency, this three year agreement aims at promoting regional firms.

Continuing our increased national presence, we were appointed to Norfolk C.C’s framework which is also open to use by other Public Contracting Authorities in the eastern region. Aimed at providing best value and opportunities for developing the local economy, the framework will run for an initial period of three years and includes refurbishments, remodelling extensions, new builds and demolition works.

Key Clients

We are delighted to begin our first project with Pegasus Life, a specialist developer that is rapidly gaining a reputation for re-inventing retirement housing. Building on our experience in the housing and healthcare sectors, 2016 will see us travel to Sevenoaks in Kent to carry out a magnificent new development of eight mews houses situated on a stunning historic estate.

Continuing our long-standing relationship with the University, we delivered two new and diverse projects. Utilising our student accommodation expertise, we carried out kitchen refurbishments and M&E replacements to Jarratt Hall. We then took to the forest to deliver the infrastructure needed to carry out a pioneering climate change research project in Mill Haft, Staffordshire.

Our relationship with Rooms & Studios, one of the leading providers of private and student accommodation in London, continues to grow. Within the past 12 months we have added four projects to our joint portfolio, all involving the remodelling of existing office blocks into residential apartments. These schemes have seen us work throughout the capital, further strengthening our London presence.

Forging new serial relationships within the Midlands, we began working with Court Collaboration on the refurbishment of two historic Birmingham landmarks - the former Cadbury’s headquarters Franklin House and Sutton Coldfield’s former Council House. Both projects involve the fit-out of commercial properties into luxury high end urban apartments.

Awards

Client of the Year Crown Transformation Programme

Royal Society for the Prevention of AccidentsBronze Award

May saw us travel to London where together with Post Office Limited, we were named winner of the ‘Client of the Year’ category at the National Federation of Builders Annual Awards. The programme of approximately 130 projects involved fast-track refurbishments nationwide with all works undertaken on a phased and out of hours basis. Highlighting what can be achieved in remarkably short periods of time when all parties approach a project with an over-riding spirit of collaboration and mutual respect, the award recognises both our integrated team of like-minded individuals and the Post Office’s forward thinking and synergetic driving force.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ (RoSPA) internationally recognised Occupational Health and Safety Awards have become a highly sought after accolade by organisations from every sector. The awards recognise and celebrate excellence in safety performance and ongoing commitment to raising standards. In July we were presented with a Bronze Award in the Industry Sector category in recognition for our Health and Safety management systems and our contribution to raising standards in the construction industry as a whole.

In the capital we worked with a strong group of consultants to facilitate the Post Office Limited’s move from its former headquarters at 148 Old Street to a new 55,000 square foot facility at Finsbury Dials in the heart of the City of London. The objective was to initiate cultural change through the creation of a new state-of-the-art ‘Customer Support Centre’ with flexibility and client liaison at the centre of its foundation. Our team worked closely with the client in order to provide a workplace that was not just a space but a place that inspires staff creativity and innovation, enabling new ways of doing business in the process.

We travelled to Stratford-Upon-Avon to display our heritage expertise on the restoration of the ‘Swan Wing’ area of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) theatres. The Swan Wing is the oldest part of the RSC’s theatres, comprising the exterior and front of house areas of the Swan Theatre. Works comprised of a series of highly detailed restorations including work to the façade and interior of the Grade II* listed building. Over 42 highly skilled tradespeople from across the Midlands worked on the project including stonemasons, bricklayers, carvers, roofers, leadworkers, scaffolders, electricians and plumbers.

The British and Irish Modern Music InstituteNew Facilities, Manchester

University of BirminghamBirmingham Institute of Forest Research

Drawing on our experience in the specialist music facilities sector, 2015 saw us work with the esteemed British and Irish Modern Music Institute, the UK and Europe’s largest and leading contemporary music college. In order to provide additional facilities to their Manchester campus we carried out the conversion and refurbishment of a former commercial property to create additional student and teaching spaces. Located in the heart of the vibrant city, the centre also includes state of the art performance and recording facilities. Our relationship with the client was further strengthened with the award of a similar project at their Bristol campus.

Working with the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research and the University of Birmingham, we are currently carrying out a truly unique and innovative project located within mature woodland at Mill Haft, Staffordshire. The Institute will be conducting research into the environmental impacts of climate change and the effects of pests and disease. Extensive works are required to set up the research site including access roads, a fieldwork compound, a carbon dioxide storage compound and all site utility services. The 10 year experiment will simulate the atmospheric conditions expected in 2070 to help improve understanding of what effect climate change may have on existing woodlands.

‘Skydive for Stephen’ in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust

Wells Cathedral School, SomersetTime Capsule Burial

In July, a plucky Shaylor Group team took part in the World Record attempt ‘Skydive for Stephen’ in memory of Stephen Sutton and to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust, our annual chosen charity. Before he died, Stephen had his heart set on breaking the world record for the most number of tandem skydives in one day. In his memory, people assembled from all over the country at Skydive Hibaldstow in Lincolnshire to take part and by early evening they had set a new World Record of 403 tandem skydivers, smashing the previous record of 281. The event received national media attention and the Shaylor Group team raised over £3,500 of sponsorship in less than a month.

There was time for celebration in June as pupils and distinguished guests buried a time capsule in the foundations of the entrance hall of Wells Cathedral School’s new performance building, Cedars Hall. Aided by the Mayor of Wells and his Lady Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Gordon Wilson, and to the triumphal sound of a glorious trumpet fanfare, pupils buried the time capsule and its contents, chosen and supplied by pupils, staff and key members of the Wells community in a subterranean chamber in the foundations of the new building.

Ladies Site Visit to pioneering Mill Haft research project

Stephen Shaylor presents at the Midlands Construction Summit

As summer drew to a close almost 30 of our office based colleagues donned PPE and took to the woods to visit our climate change research project in Staffordshire. This fun and exciting day gave attendees the opportunity to spend time on a live project site and see the sterling work carried out by the operations team. The objective for these annual site visits is to enable all members of our team to have a fully rounded view of how we operate as a business, understand the importance of their role in the overall life of a project and to see exactly what is involved in the day to day running of a construction project.

The Midlands construction industry came together in October at the Midlands Construction Summit. With the objective of helping the region’s built environment sector reflect on recent industry changes, the event offered a platform to share opinions and learn from industry leaders, including Peter Hansford, UK Chief Construction Advisor. Chief Executive Stephen Shaylor took to the podium to outline how Shaylor Group is responding to the challenge and aligning with the Government’s Construction Strategy 2025 in the defined areas of People, Smart, Sustainable, Growth and Leadership.
