Shelflife Meet Your Library Staff: Kat Herring Speaks!

Shelflife : What’s the best thing about working at the library? KH: I've always loved libraries. My parents raised 5 children and my mother stayed home with us. We moved a lot because of my dad's job. I remember that the first thing that my mom would do in each place we moved to would be to find out where the library was and take all of us to get a library card. I still remember the first book I ever checked out: Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I suppose that libraries have always held a magic for me. I think this can still be experienced in college and I love knowing that I work someplace that shares this feeling with people. Shelflife : You just got married a few months ago. What’s it like to be in college, married, and temporarily away from your husband? As hard as it sounds? KH: Being away from Tim is incredibly difficult. We've been together for a few years, though, and we made a commit-ment to our long distance relationship while Tim was serving in the Army. I think what people need to realize about relationships is that they require a lot of hard work. A long distance relationship requires that you go the extra mile, but when you love someone, the rewards of your efforts are ten-fold. We talk frequently on the phone and keep the "spark" alive by sending each other small gifts and cards. I'm also incredibly blessed to be married to a man who sup-ports my ambitions and values education. Shelflife : What’s the best kept secret-of-a-website that you know of? KH: One of my favorite websites is Glam.com, a website for women. Sometimes I need a break from classes and acade-mia and Glam is the perfect place to do just that. They have sections on celebrities, fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and shopping. I love it because it gives me a chance to be mindless. I can read the latest celebrity gossip and learn how to throw a Thanksgiving dinner party all in one place. Sometimes I need that. Shelflife : Okay, and what’s the wisest piece of advice you’ve ever heard? KH: One of my best friends recently told me that if something doesn't matter in the larger scheme of life at the end of the day, it isn't worth my time to worry about it. This really describes where I am in my life right now. Sometimes in college it's hard to remember that the cliques, the clothes, and the self-centeredness of people aren't what life is all about. I've really been trying to focus my attention on the fulfilling life I want to live. Shelflife : Suppose Mike Maxey, Britney Spears, and Nelson Mandela walked into a bar. What kinds of things would come up conversation? KH: Nelson Mandela is one of my personal heroes. While I'm sure he and President Maxey could find something intel-lectual to talk about, I think Miss Spears would be left out of that conversation. Shelflife : Now that you’re 2 1/2 months away from graduating, what are you thinking? How do you envision, say, the next 10 years of your life? KH: I really can't wait to graduate. I'm so excited to begin the next chapter of my life. My goal is to go to get my MA in International Studies, hopefully from Stanford or the University of Denver. After graduate school, I'd like to work for an international non-profit organization such as Compassion International or Heifer International. Shelflife : What’s one thing you would change about RC if you could? And one thing you never want to see change? KH: I think RC would benefit from a bus or shuttle system on a daily basis, perhaps even one that only runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are a lot of students who live on Elizabeth Campus and in off campus houses near Clay Street and Craig Avenue. I think this would also help alleviate the parking situation, and it would be helpful to the environ-ment by encouraging carpool-style transportation. One thing I would never want to see change is the size of our col-lege. One of my favorite things about RC is how personal it is. I love that I am close with my professors and the other students in my major; I would never want future students to lose that gift.

Enter your name and 7-digit ID number. 3. Click on the link indicating how many items you currently have checked out. 4. Highlight the items you’d like to renew. 5. Check the status of the items to be sure that your renewals were done successfully. 6. Log out (and enjoy the knowledge that you just saved yourself a trip to the library and the hassle of carrying all those books back and forth).

Good things happen in threes! And just to prove it, Fintel Library is giving a limited edition ceramic mug to anyone who checks out three or more items at the library. Beginning in mid-November, be sure to ask for your free mug when borrowing mate-rials at the lend-ing services desk. Limit one per person. Of-fer good while supplies last.
