It is so hard to believe Christmas and New Year have come and gone and we are already well in to enjoying and planning for 2012. Foundation Shine has definitely been keeping busy as you can read by Sharon’s news on our Rockabilly and High Tea.

Both of these events were very successful - one involved tea in fine bone china cups and saucers, victorian posies and the lively vibe of 120 ladies enjoying shopping, the company of friends and being inspired by our wonderful guest speakers Geoff Harris, Executive Director of the Mental Health Coalition of SA and Madge McGuire Director of Catherine House.

The Rockabilly involved over 300 energetic guests rocking and rolling the night away to the sounds of  great bands and an array of vintage cars to rival the Birdwood museum!!  Thanks to George and Leah Cushnie for organising this amazing event.

We are very grateful for the $5000 donation from the Rockabilly and part of the money went towards our Christmas Gift Boxes.

From the High Tea we were able to donate $2000 to Catherine House towards their Education and Employment Program and $2000 to MIFSA (Mental Illness Fellowship SA) who continue to make such a difference in the lives of the many people dealing with mental health issues.

We were extremely busy just before Christmas delivering our “Christmas Cheer Gift Boxes” to the many people who struggle with mental health issues and who need a lift at this time of year. We are often told how important these gifts are and how they really make a difference to those receiving them.

I spent a very pleasant evening in the peaceful and beautiful grounds of St Johns Church, Halifax Street just before Christmas helping raise funds for the Mary Magdalene Centre’s Christmas Bazaar.

Foundation Shine put together a trading table and were able to donate $500 to this wonderful organisation.  Many of the people they assist suffer from mental health problems, so we were very happy to be able to contribute and be part of this enjoyable evening.

On a sadder note, one of our very loyal Shine supporters Lydia and Garry Minuzzo recently lost a loved member of their family who had been suffering from mental illness for many years.  They very kindly suggested that in lieu of flowers, a donation to Foundation Shine Inc would be appreciated.

We sincerely thank them and all those attending the funeral who donated generously to Foundation Shine.  Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone in their family.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our loyal Foundation Shine supporters, who through your loyalty and generosity, enable us to continue being a  S OCIETY  H ELPING    I NDIVIDUALS  N EDDING   E NCOURAGEMENT

A wordfrom the president

Life like nature has many moods

From the gentle kiss of the dawn

The opening of the bud

The freedom of the bird as it spreads its wings and flies

The challenge of the wave as it erupts upon the rocky shore

The falling of the rain

The lowly drop, the storm

The path th rough the cyc le of nature is fo rever changing

Life like nature constantly evolves

The path is not smooth, weather not always fine

There’s rocks, slopes, sandpits, mountains to be scaled

But if we place both feet firmly upon the ground

We can leave our footprint in the sand

Accept each change as a challenge, like seed, to shoot, to sapling, to tree, bud and flower

Our path is forever changing

Like the seal dives into the sea

The bird is truly free

Test your boundaries, test your limits, open your inner door

Look within your inner self, see what truly is

Your reflection in the water shows your strength far beyond

Your reflection in the water shows you’re truly whole

Reflection in the water shows the essence of your soul

Life like nature is changing: the dawn, the midday sun, the evening and the night

Life through the changes allows us to grow, to live to learn to be for this we have the right

Life like nature is - live.

It was a very rewarding feeling and worthwhile effort to be able to donate 150 of our Christmas Gift Boxes to various organisations leading up to Christmas.

Each box contained a notebook and pen, body lotion or after shave cream, chocolate stars, a box of positive affirmations and gift wrapped with all the trimming of Christmas.

We were able to deliver to Catherine House (Solving Women's Homelessness) Aceda (Incorporating Panic & Anxiety,Obsessive Compulsive & Eating Disorder Associations)

Hutt Street Centre, Helen Mayo House,(Post Natal Depression), Cedars North West, Glenside Campus and Older Persons Mental Health Services.

Some comments which bring home just how much these gifts were appreciated are as follows:-

Michelle Haine Older Persons Mental Health Services

These gifts are going to our chronically mentally unwell clients, who live alone, with no (or very little) family and social support.  They are financially disadvantaged and are unable to celebrate Christmas in the way we become accustomed to.  They do not have people in their lives to receive presents from.  They are grateful for anything they are given in this period.

Lynne Doherty Clinical Services Coordinator Cedars North West - Glenside Campus

Please accept my sincere thanks for the beautiful Christmas presents Foundation Shine has so kindly donated to the consumers of Cedars North West for Christmas Day.

Our consumers receive so little, and the fact that your foundation has thought of them and provided for them will bring some smiles on what can be a very difficult day.

Madge McGuire Director Catherine House Inc.

On behalf of the women of Catherine House I would like to thank you for your generous Christmas donation of 25 beautiful gift boxes.  Your kindness will help us to provide so much more for women, to make it an extra special occasion.

Loraine House ACEDA Senior Support Worker Eating Disorders

I know I have said before how important the boxes are, but really want you to know you are really making a difference in the lives of people.

Ladies accepting our gift packs for a Carers Respite Program held this year.  We will be donating as of next year to every one of the MIFSA Respite programs held.

LifeThank you to those of you who have and would like

to support Foundation Shine Inc by way of donations

in lieu of flowers. It is through your generosity and

financial support that we would be able to continue to

support people with mental ill health and their carers.

Foundation Shine Inc would gratefully accept memorial

gifts to help with its work. Donations are promptly

acknowledged to the bereaved and the donor.

EVENTS

Our High Tea was run in conjunction with Mental Health Week which ran from the 9th - 15th October.

Their logo for this year was  “OPEN YOUR MIND”  What you do can make the difference!

Mental Health Week is an annual series of events and activities held to increase community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing.

Most of the activities held during this week are free to attend and help communities spread the word that mental health is relevant to everyone - in fact one in five of us will experience a mental health problem in the next 12 months.

We thank all our Foundation Shine supporters for helping ‘us’ to make the difference.

Given the amazing success of our previous high tea event held at the Lenzerheide, it was inevitable that we should return for yet another wonderful day.

This time, art works on display were replaced by trader stalls, creating a mini ladies expo.

Fashions from Mai Loui, Jewellery from Ginger Lily and Ku De Ta, Hair and Beauty by Elevate and Foundation Shine’s own stall of beautiful Christmas wreaths and arrangements created by Robyn May and Christmas stockings, bags, quilts, aprons and eye masks made by Barb Reuter kept ladies busy doing what ladies love to do - “SHOP”

Inside the restaurant, our tables were decorated with the prettiest of posies inside tea cups and saucers, with Robyn and Lorraine spending many hours putting them together. Every guest received special give aways and our raffles and lucky dips had plenty of wonderful and very special prizes.

Foundation Shine Inc. Celebrates High Tea at the Lenzerheide 13th October, 2011

Our compere for the day was the effervescent Eve Goodings with our guest speakers, Geoff Harris, the Executive Director of the Mental Health Coalition of S.A. and the amazing Madge McGuire, Director of Catherine House. Both speakers were incredibly inspiring and you could’ve heard a pin drop.

Sharon sang Downtown and followed up with what has become our signature number that has everyone singing along to Que Sera Sera.

Lots of love and laughter filled the room and again, it just goes to show how events such as this are not only fun, but whilst having a good time we are all doing our bit to raise awareness and funds to assist with mental ill-health.

Proceeds from this event were directed to:

• Catherine House $2000.00

• Mental Illness Fellowship of South Australia Inc. $2000.00

Catherine House

Catherine House was established in 1988 by

the Sisters of Mercy.  It is the only provider of

supported accommodation in SA for women

over 21 years, unaccompanied by children,

who are homeless for a range of complex

reasons.

Women come from across the whole spectrum

of society including those who have gone to

private schools, university or had a career.

They are dedicated to "Educating Women

out of Homelessness" and provide a range of

recreational and educational courses.

The areas of support to homeless women

living with mental illness are: individual

support plans which address issues such

as: housing, finances, mental health, general

health, living skills, activities, relationships and

personal development.

Our first class was held on the 18th

January where  eight very enthusiastic

ladies attended  and together we spent

an hour and a half of learning to  create a

colourful design using iris, gerberas and

lilies. Each student was able to take their

arrangement home where they could continue

to enjoy their glorious blooms.

Robyn and Allan sadly lost their much loved

four legged companion Zaccy

13th March, 2012.

Zaccy is well known to many of you, as for

years when Robyn owned and operated her

Florist Shop, Zaccy was a very important

member of the staff going to work every day.

His four legged friend, Nuggett Lee who

also is on assignment every day at Whiteline

Transport has inherited Zaccy’s very special

food and water bowls.

Zaccy had a wonderful life and will be missed

greatly by Robyn and Allan and all of those

who were lucky enough to share a pat and

his happy wagging tail – he has made his

mark on us all leaving behind very special

memories.

Aceda  - Recovery Understanding Acceptance Inclusion

One of the areas of Aceda is their Eating Disorders Support Service.  Eating disorders are psychological illnesses with serious physical consequences.

Left untreated they can have a serious effect on all aspects of a person's life and are potentially life threatening.

Aceda Eating Disorders are the recipients of the Foundation Shine Pamper Gift Boxes. These boxes are given to young girls and women with eating disorders they contain: a journal, body lotion, a box of affirmation cards and a lavender relaxation eye mask. Loraine House Recovery Support Worker from Aceda said: We encourage girls to write a journal as it is helpful in their eating disorder journey and the gift boxes contain just the right items to assist in recovery. Often when we give a Foundation Shine Pamper Gift Box the girls are so overwhelmed that they cry (happy tears). We are so very appreciative of these beautiful boxes – thank you!.

A journal is not just a book to keep a record of our lives: it’s also a tool that can help us! A journal can also be a tool for self-evaluation and self-improvement. These Gift Boxes are often the first step in a person’s recovery from their eating disorder.

Aceda would like to thank Foundation Shine for their continued support of the organisation.

CLUB AGM

THIS MONTH

WED

7th

Hello all

Welcome to our March newsletter and this my last report as President of your club, I wish

February had more days in it, because even though we got an extra one this year, 29 of

them is just not enough to fit everything in! I should be getting used to cramming in

everything that has to be done in any given month, but the time seems to be passing me by

more rapidly these days. February was a great month of events for our club, we had strong

attendance by our club to a wet Super Chevy Sunday and All American Day had a good

showing of club cars, but what about “Corvettes at The Port”, another outstanding day for

the club with close to 90 cars (can you believe that!) giving us the opportunity to showcase

our cars to the people of SA, huge thanks to Laurie for organising another great day and

many thanks to those who dug in to help on the day and we raised significant funds for Shine

which will be reported at the March meeting. Make sure you check out the video Judy Beyer

has put on you tube of the day. Don’t forget our track day at Mallala coming up which

promises to be a fantastic day both on and off the track with the club providing a Barbeque

lunch for a $5 donation to Shine. The next big Corvette event will be the NSW Convention at

Wollongong over Easter 2012 if you intend joining some of us for the trip East to Sydney,

and haven’t yet registered, you will need to do so rather quickly to reserve your spot. Our

AGM is on at our March meeting and we are still looking for nominations to fill positions on

the Committee, please consider nominating and supporting the work done by the committee

for club members. Finally I would like to thank everyone for their assistance and support

over the last 5 years and in particular my lovely wife Karen whilst I have been in the

President and Vice President roles. This month, I step back and join the majority of you in

the back stalls, I have enjoyed my time immensely on the committee and have seen

enormous change, maturity and evolution of the club take place over this period and I am

sure that will continue into the future. See you all at the March meeting. Drive safe. Dave

Ok here goes.

I had been preparing to import a 1981 L-81 C3 vette from the states Sep last year. in April 2011 a friend of mine gave me a call and told me of a beauty that was for sale on Carsales.com. The pictures on the add were spectacular and even though it was a little earlier than I had planned for I called Jason in Brisbane and spoke to him at lengths about the car. The car had been imported from Visalia in California so that ticked the first box of NO rust. Second tick was the condition of the car, from the pics it

was straight, had only done 56000Miles and had the glass T-tops. Thirdly was the price, as I had been

scouring the internet for a few months, doing the legwork and realising that there were quite a few LHD

C3 Vettes available but being standard (As we all know LHD in SA can be a bit of a nightmare for

registration) was not so easy to find. The prices varied and then import costs on top of that made some of

them out of my reach. So Jason and I came to an agreement and he posted the car down from QLD

included in the price. The Vette was delivered to my door on 15 April 2011. I was relieved to find that the

car was as good as was described to me ( sometimes that’s not the case..)

I have done the usual things necessary when owning a 30 year old car i.e replacing the shocks, power

steering ram and control valve, engine and trans mounts and a few other bushings that had given up the

ghost, rewired the tail lights to suit SA rego and that’s about it.

Jane and I joined the club even before we purchased the car as its a smart thing to talk to the horses

head and not the other end when it comes to Corvettes ( and we were so lucky to find out that with in the

club we have both ends of the horse to talk to..!)

So after a barrage of taunts from the guys at work about the Mystical Corvette and that I was just showing

them pics from some ones internet blog and the car didn't really exist, I fronted up to Regency park on 20

Dec 2011. to my amazement ( and a whole lot of work getting the car ready) the Vette passed first go with

flying colours! So that’s the story , now the saga begins with restoring her back to Original condition

bit by bit. Dreams do come true. Cheers Chris , Jane and 81VETTE.

Throughout 2012, the Corvette Club continue to throw their support behind Foundation Shine Inc.  At the various club events that they held late in 2011 and 2012, including Corvettes at the Port, held in February, the Management, Committee and members have donated funds and ran raffles, so much so, that when we were invited to attend their Annual General Meeting, we were presented with a cheque for $2560.00, this is in addition to gate takings from the Port Adelaide Event, making their donation in excess of $3000.00.  The Corvette Club have indicated that Foundation Shine Inc will continue to be its charity of preference until 2014.

We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support and now having attended meetings and events with them, they are a great bunch of people to be with.
