Introduction

The triangular trade• Arrival of Europeans the slave trade became part of the triangular trade.• On the first leg, merchants shipped Europeans goods. On the second leg,

known as the Middle Passage, the slaves were transported to the Americas. • In Europe the need for labor grew so they make agreements with African

slave traders who would kidnap anyone they could find to sell as slaves.

• Triangular trade or triangle trade is a historical term indicating trade among three ports or regions.

Atlantic triangular slave trade

• The best-known triangular trading system is the transatlantic slave trade, that operated from the late 16th to early 19th centuries, carrying slaves, cash crops, and manufactured goods between West Africa, Caribbean or American colonies.

Aboard the floating coffins

• The Middle passage voyage might take three weeks or three months depending on ocean winds. Most slave ships captains had one goal: to pack as many salves as possible onto the ship to maximize profits. Many slaves died because they contracted smallpox, cholera, or yellow fever. Any contagious disease became a deadly epidemic. Many Africans died in the middle passage, between 1 and 2 million died on the journey.

• Olaudah Equinao was a boy that was kidnapped with his sister and was sold to the slavery. He wrote one of the most well-known accounts of the Middle Passage. He relates his story, and say: “I became so sick and low that I was not able to eat. I now wished for the last friend, death, to relieve me.”

Impact on Africa• The kingdoms of the coast of Africa like Dahomey and Asante

grew up being rich capturing their African companions into slavery.

• The Asante leaders actively partnered with European traders to build coastal fortresses that served as focal points for the shipping of goods and slaves

• Many captives went to great lengths to escape their captors
