SHIRE PRESIDENT NEWS

RSL Hall/ Men’s Shed/Apex Park/CWA Building Area – Master Plan Council was delighted with input received from

stakeholders regarding the above precinct and looks

forward to receiving the workshop outcomes report at

the April Council Meeting. The report will then be

made available on Council’s website and also via the

Kojonup News. This allows stakeholders, community

and Council to assess future developments and use

options within the area that is planned, costed and

where asset management/financial/operational

implications,

social/business/educational/cultural/heritage, etc.

opportunities are identified and future funding

opportunities to realise the agreed vision are shared

with external funding providers.

Health Services Council also conducted 2 successful Health Services

Planning workshops which looked at the myriad of

aspects attached to the full spectrum of Health

Services, which level of government is responsible for

delivery, how such services compliment State and

Commonwealth strategies now and particularly into

the future, prioritising levels of service delivery across

all council operations/built environment including

rationalisation in order to meet majority community

priorities given our limited revenue streams. Is there

also an appetite for possible private sector investment

opportunities in health services? Council awaits the

outcomes report which will be made available on

Council’s website and also via the Kojonup News to

ensure community engagement upon Council

receiving same at the April Council Meeting.

Funding Applications Council via staff and local consultants (Cush Prasser-

Jones, Leith Schmidt and Margaret Robertson) have

been working tirelessly to finalise funding submissions

under the Great Southern Development Commissions

– Royalties for Region Community Chest Fund and

Regional Grants Scheme as well as the Western

Australia Community Health - Southern Inland Health

Initiative – Stream 6 Residential Aged Care and

Dementia Investment Program for a number of

projects such as:

Development of a Kodja Place Master Plan

Improvements to Springhaven, Security, Energy

efficiencies, entrance, car parking and bus layby

Replacement of Harrison Place Public Toilets

Improving internal Memorial Hall toilets as part of

Disability & Inclusion Plan

Internal upgrades for Jean Sullivan Units again as

part of Council’s Disability &Inclusion Planning

Water Harvesting & Reuse Integrated Planning to

pipe water from Stock Road to Kodja Place

While there is no guarantee of funding, Council does

possess a number of “shovel ready” projects and

supporting business cases that can be actioned when

funding rounds specific to that project are open.

Council is also conscious of the need to ensure

matching $ for $ funds are held in reserves to meet

funding criteria. This is an increasing issue when

ongoing maintenance allocations are required to

maintain present assets especially when no other

external funding sources are available or foreseeable in

the short/medium term.

2014/2015 Annual Electors Meeting Council and Management thank community members

for their attendance and input. 2017 will see a review

of the 2013-2023 Community Strategic Plan and I

encourage as many community members as possible to

participate in the review sessions as ultimately as the

name implies it is Council & the Community’s Plan.

Community members are reminded that the Shire

President is available for appointments Wednesday

morning from 10:00am until noon. Please contact the

Shire Office on (08) 9831 2400.

LIBRARY NEWS

News books are being released all the time, and it is

my great pleasure to choose books for our library

collection but I am always looking for suggestions, so

if you have read a book recently that you believe many

others in our community may enjoy as well, please let

me know the tile & author. This applies to all the

genres: adult, non-fiction, young adult, kids & infants.

Remember it’s your library & we need to cater for

everyone’s reading needs. Below is a list of the books

that have been added to our library this March

New Reads The Secrets of Happiness – Lucy

Diamond. The best things in life can

be just around the corner. Rachel and

Becca aren't real sisters or so they say.

They are step-sisters, living far apart,

with little in common. Rachel is the

successful one: happily married with

three children and a big house, plus an

impressive career. Artistic Becca, meanwhile, lurches

from one dead-end job to another, shares a titchy flat

and has given up on love. The two of them have lost

touch but when Rachel doesn't come home one night,

Becca is called in to help.

Legacy of Hunter’s Ridge – Sarah

Barrie. Successful horse trainer

Alissa Morgan-Jones has the world

at her feet, until a tragic fire destroys

everything. Four years after fleeing

the city and the scandal that ruined

his career, disgraced lawyer

Cameron Blakely has a successful

new business and a new life. When

Alissa shows up, he’s drawn to her immediately. But

there’s more to his new neighbour than her big blue

eyes and lost expression. If only she’ll open up and let

him in.

Cometh the Hour – Jeffrey Archer. A suicide note has

devastating consequences for Harry and Emma

Clifton, Giles Barrington and Lady Virginia. Giles

must decide if he should withdraw from politics and

try to rescue Karin, the woman he

loves, from behind the Iron Curtain.

But is Karin truly in love with him or

is she a spy? Lady Virginia is facing

bankruptcy, and can see no way out of

her financial problems, until she is

introduced to the hapless Cyrus T.

Grant III from Baton Rouge,

Louisiana, who's in England to see his horse run at

Royal Ascot. Sebastian Clifton is now the Chief

Executive of Farthings Bank and a workaholic, whose

personal life is thrown into disarray when he falls for

Priya, a beautiful Indian girl. But her parents have

already chosen the man she is going to marry.

Meanwhile, Sebastian's rivals Adrian Sloane and

Desmond Mellor are still plotting to bring him and his

chairman Hakim Bishara down, so they can take over

Farthings. Harry Clifton remains determined to get

Anatoly Babakov released from a gulag in Siberia,

following the international success of his acclaimed

book, Uncle Joe. But then something unexpected

happens that none of them could have anticipated.

Outback Sisters – Rachel Johns. Café

owner Frankie has been unlucky in

love all her life. Her sister, Simone,

lost the love of her life years before

and is now devoted to raising their

two teenage girls, leaving little time

for romance. When Frankie is kissed

by a handsome stranger who calls her

Simone, it’s a case of mistaken identity but who is this

man and how does he know Simone?

A Smart Start The smell of cinnamon wafts in the air, a hot cross bun

is under the grill, a chocolate bunny sitting on the

bench top. It’s Easter, when it feels we have only just

recovered from Christmas and the New Year. You may

have noticed the early sales of chocolate and buns over

the past six weeks. Our environment can certainly

contribute to poor health choices however we

ultimately have control over our health. Here are tips

for staying healthy with the kids at Easter:

1. Enjoy non-food activity such as egg decorating/

painting, egg and spoon races, face painting or

making homemade cards.

2. Increase outdoor physical activity. Walking,

cricket, soccer, hiking, bike riding and swimming

are all fun family activities to make the most out

of a long weekend.

3. Make homemade Easter eggs to teach children

about food and getting hands on in the kitchen. If

time is short, decorate store bought eggs.

4. Make a basket for Easter eggs to go into.

5. Relax, take time from busy schedules to just be

together as a family. Perhaps read a book together

or play a board game, go to the park or beach or

perhaps organise a movie night.

6. Eat plenty of healthy snacks and meals, rich in

whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, dairy, grains

and lean meats/fish/poultry.

7. Drink plenty of water and/or low sugar drinks (tea,

coffee, soda water, milk). Make water more

appealing by adding mint and cucumber or

watermelon and lime or orange and lemon.

8. Teeth are too important and need adequate care,

drink water after eating chocolate, brush up on

oral hygiene.

9. Try recipe modification to enjoy your favourite

meals, for example the Easter Sunday cook up

could be poached eggs with beans flavoured with

basil, olive oil, garlic and pepper topped with

cherry tomatoes on grainy toast.

SPRINGHAVEN NEWS

Upgrades and

renovations of

the bathrooms

and rooms 1 & 2

have begun.

These will take

approximately 3

months to

complete and we

are looking

forward to the

end result.

Due to the

renovations part

of the hallway

has been

blocked and

visitors will

need to use the walkway to visit any residents living in

the east wing. Please remember to sign in at the front

desk before heading down the walkway.

For ease of access the external doors to the walkway

have been left open over the last few days and to the

delight of our residents, we had an unannounced visitor

yesterday - a bobtail goanna. Luckily we had our RN

to take him back to the bush where he belonged.

We would like to wish a big Happy Birthday to Jean

Haig for 16 March and Norma Fleay and Nancy

Boddington for 25 March. A Birthday Luncheon will

be held on Wednesday, 16 March 2016 to celebrate.

The Springhaven residents have been enjoying the

lovely summer weather this month making use of the

outdoor setting and enjoying a BBQ. We have also

been enjoying going on short group walks outside and

playing Croquet on the lawn.

Happy hour at

Springhaven is at

3:00pm every

Friday. We would

love for you to

come and have a

drink and chat with

the residents. The

residents love

having visitors at

morning and

afternoon tea time.

The residents

would also love

you to come up and

play cards or board

games with them any time. If you have any queries you

can contact us on 98312800.
