It’s 1959. Elizabeth Taylor is caus-
ing a furore with her portrayal
of traumatised heiress Catherine
Holly in the flm Suddenly, Last
Summer. But it’s not her award-
winning performance that is gath-
ering the most attention; it’s the
vision of her in a white, scoop-back
swimsuit, kneeling on the sand
of a European beach with the surf
lapping around her thighs. The
beach has never seen such glamour.
The flm was made in the hey-
day of Cinecittà, the Italian studios
founded in 1937 and responsible
for some of the era’s blockbusters,
including Ben Hur. Hollywood
flm-makers were favouring Italy
over the US, lured by the glori-

For the frst time, Italian
heavyweight designers such as Gu-

a presence on the sand, turning
the beaches of Rimini, Riccione

of the international jet set. Perfect-

brightly printed Pucci silk scarves
and bleary eyes from a night par-

waves too. It had made its debut

has never diminished. ‘For as long
as I can remember there have been
people who were super glamorous
on the beach. I think it’s become
more the norm for all women
now as the choice of swimwear
has grown. No more do you wear
a T-shirt and shorts to the beach
when there are incredible kaftans

appealing. I always take a harmo-

one aspect of the bikini or maybe
both after a swim or when I am

The cover-up, too, is an im-

weight cover-ups. ‘They take you
from beach to the bar or restaurant
and into the night. They are easy

for all summer occasions,’ she says,

Ursula Lake says she teams her
bikinis with ‘super-light muslin

Milan has embraced the fun side of fashion this season, Harriet Quick discovers
Fresh, bright, bold and bursting
with technicolour – at Milan Fash-
ion Week, designers turned the
corner and moved away from the
pure and clean minimalist lines
of winter to embrace a foot-loose,
sunny mood for spring/summer
2014 that’s as balmy as a mid-
summer breeze. Italian designers
were at their best, embracing all
the carefree airs of Mediterranean
life and fusing it with outstanding
artisan workmanship and simple,
light-as-a-feather fabrics. Milan
has always been known for sultry,
after-dark, pouting glamour and,
while that was still evident, light-
ness, fun, humour and vibrancy
erupted down the Milan catwalks.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano
Gabbana are brilliant tour guides
to Italy and every season they take
us on a journey through history
and culture, reprising prints, mo-
tifs, myths and legends along the
way. They unearthed Greek and
Roman ruins in Sicily, along with
old coins and native fowers for
their latest collection. Sepia im-
ages of temples and amphitheatres
were cast on swingy hem minidress
shapes; coins were blown up large
to create buckle belts and hair jew-
ellery, while delicate almond tree
blossom in 3D relief emerged from
the prettiest of white organza cock-
tail styles with slender waists and
bell-shaped sleeves. These pieces
are ideal for a romantic date, a wed-
ding (even for the bride), or when
foating across the Med in a yacht.
Milan’s new mood is about
joy and exuberance, as Moschino
exemplifed when it celebrated its
30th birthday with an uplifting
performance from 1970s disco
queen Gloria Gaynor. Of course,
this is the label that’s no stranger
to high jinks and humour, but the

chino reached into the archives
and sent dancing models on to the
catwalk in Italian fag motif vests,
dresses with collars made from
stufed teddy bears and paper-bag

vampish nuns and beaming mam-

shopping in jolly polka dots.
Karl Lagerfeld might be a man
who inhabits a world of black and
white, but his spring ofering at
Fendi burst with glorious, ravish-

over dresses foated and lifted as
the models walked, in a mouthwa-

for Emilio Pucci. Lace-up booties
came in high-shine metallic and,

of the season. Sarong skirts made
a comeback and they could look
great when paired with belted jack-

With a reputation for preci-sion and meticulous attention to detail, it is unsurprising that Tamburini has become one of the region’s leading jewellery companies. This family-run business produces pieces de-signed to enhance the gem-stones used while incorporating a nod to current trends. There

34: Into The Blue
Preen, Christopher Kane, Stella
McCartney, Roksanda Ilincic и
Gucci, Pucci, Dolce
& Gabbana, Versace, Moschino,
Roberto Cavalli,

Tapelo
Paris,
Violet Lake.

40: Let There Be Light
Athena Procopiou».

Moschino,
Moschino
Emilio Pucci

46: Summer Perfection
Dolce
& Gabbana
Giorgio Armani.
Max Mara
Jil Sander

Salvatore Ferragamo
Salvatore Ferragamo
