KOH PHING KAN (JAMES BOND ISLAND)Made famous by the filming of the James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”, this island is now a major tourist attraction, visited by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people daily.

Most come by bus then longtail boat from Phang Nga, so it is best visited before 10:30 am or in the late afternoon, assuming you want to avoid the crowds. Koh Phing Kan has

The best anchorage in this group is found in the channel between Koh Raya Ring and Koh Daeng Yai. This is an exceptionally beautiful place to awaken in the morning, when sunlight strikes the sheer rock cliffs of Daeng Yai. The anchorage can be approached either from the south, via the channel formed by Koh Yang and Koh Daeng Yai, or from the southeast, passing east of Koh Yang, distinctive due its high, thin column of rock, visible from far south.

There is a convenient transit approaching from the south, lining up Koh Lolo and Koh Khai to avoid the sand bars.

Good holding is available on a muddy bottom in 5-8 metres. The sandbank east of the anchorage is very shallow and almost dries at low tide. There is a current of up to 2 knots in the channel, strongest at ebb tide.

a stunning lagoon and some interesting rock formations, though it is no more impressive than many other islands in the area which the day tours ignore.

Scores of food and souvenirs vendors come from Koh Pan Yi to set up stalls on the island during the day. A 200 baht per person fee is levied by the Park Rangers when going ashore.

KOH YANG18 miles from Yacht Haven

The lagoon on the north side of Koh Phing Kan can be entered by dinghy at high tide; otherwise access is possible by dinghy at most tides via the jetty on the southwest side.

This is a delightful, well-sheltered anchorage on a small bay facing south with good holding on a muddy bottom in 4-5 metres. Approach from the deep channel on an easterly heading, taking care to avoid the shallow bank approximately 600 metres south of the anchorage which often has a bamboo stake to show its position. There is a small community of thatched houses on the beach, and a restaurant where coconuts, fish, crabs or prawns can often be bought from the villagers who maintain temporary fishing houses here.

Again, if moving north from here, beware of the rock that lurks beneath the surface at all tides in the passage between Koh Yang and Koh Daeng Yai (see chart).

KOH PAN YI22 miles from Yacht Haven

A

Koh Pan Yi, otherwise known as Sea Gypsy Village, is built almost entirely on stilts over water to the south of the sheer cliffs of the island. The people here are really Muslim fishermen, not Sea Gypsies as the tourist name suggests. The nearest real Sea Gypsies live far south on Phuket Island.

The approach from the south is clearly marked by a light structure on a small rocky islet at the river entrance and the course to the village is straight. Favour the right side, if any, to stay in deeper water. Anchor in 4-9 metres to the east of the village, taking care to avoid the many floating cages used for raising fish.

There are dinghy landings, many restaurants and souvenir shops in the village, which is usually packed with up to 3,000 tourists during the lunch period, but is quiet and peaceful in the late afternoon and evening.

Further north on the east side of Khao Khian are cave drawings dating far back, perhaps to Neanderthal times. West of Khao Khian is a shallow mangrove river that passes through a tunnel in Khao Ra Ya, which is one of Phang Nga’s most spectacular caves.

About Chef Billy Ågren

Billy was born on 17 July 1977 in the small town of Hudiksvall in northern Sweden, where he graduated from chef school in 1996. He then worked in various restaurants in Copenhagen in Denmark, and Stockholm in Sweden.

In 1999 he was off ered the position of Chef at Rico’s Steakhouse in Patong. In the autumn of 2000 he opened the Two Chefs’ Bar and Grill together with a friend he’d met at the chef school in Sweden. In 2004 the two went on to open the Beefeater Steakhouse in Pattaya, Thailand. In 2007, they opened a second branch of the Two Chefs Bar and Grill, followed by a third in 2008.

Billy says that they always strive to use the freshest, top-quality ingredients which are available from the local markets. The inspirational theme for the group’s menu design is classical French and European cuisine.

The menus are changed twice a year so that the dishes off ered maintain originality and fl air. Together they continue to strive always to do things better.

Billy says proudly, that they smoke their own salmon, bake their own bread, make their own fresh pasta, and create all the stock used from scratch. There’s a fi ne selection of sweets available and these are all created from the freshest ingredients in their own kitchen.

Today the ‘two chef’ partnership in the Two Chefs Bar and Grill operation consists of Billy, of course, and his Thai colleague Head Chef, Khun Bao.

Peanuts, Blimps,

Sounds like the plot for an Agatha Christie novel, but it’s not. It’s our call on the latest aviation trivia. Enjoy.

Forget the Icelandic volcano spewing ash and exposing the real or invented vulnerability of European aviation to cataclysmic eruptions; forget biofuels and how they could save the industry in the long term; forget the explosion of budget carriers throughout Asia, forget even the impending introduction of the Boeing B787 Dreamliner. Instead let’s take a look at some of the more unusual, even bizarre, events which have made the aviation headlines in 2010.

First, enter the humble peanut. The US Department of Transportation, in its infi nite wisdom, recently announced that it was banning this salty snack on commercial fl ights under its control, because of the allergic reaction to peanuts which some people experience. The announcement provoked a furious response (nut rage?) from the American public, who are apparently addicted to the small briny nibble, which precedes the fi rst ‘free’ drink on board. It’s good to know that when it really matters the great United States ‘vox populi’ can still make itself heard.

Okay, so the argument went, there’s a section of the public which suff er from the allergy and they must lead a miserable, deprived existence, but it's hard to believe that they’d be unaware of the problem by the time they board their fi rst aeroplane. I mean, Americans put peanuts in everything from sundaes to, um, peanut butter. For goodness sake, lots of people are lactose intolerant – so no more milk on planes? Others are caff eine sensitive – no more coff ee? Where do you stop? In the face of all this furore, the DOT hastily backtracked, and the aerial peanut survived to delight again.

You might have missed the strange case of a stowaway’s body found in the landing gear of an Airbus 320 after it landed at Riyadh’s King Khaled International Airport in Saudi Arabia? The man apparently managed to mount the wheel strut in Beirut without the control tower noticing. Passengers later reported seeing a man in a baseball cap and a backpack dashing toward the plane as it taxied. Sadly, he never lived to tell the tale. However, cases of stowaways hitching rides on aircraft undercarriages are not uncommon – and some have, miraculously, survived.

For those who prefer a more comfortable ride there’s the new Aircruise, a luxurious airship conceived as a fl ying hotel, which will transport travellers in leisurely style and splendour. The airship’s designer says it’s aimed at people

wanting a ‘more serene transport experience; looking for a refl ective journey’. Nick Talbot, for it is he, also designed the world’s fi rst private spaceship, Virgin Galactic.

The plane will carry up to 100 passengers and off ers an ultra-modern cocktail bar and guest lounge, a penthouse, four duplex apartments and several smaller apartments. Personally I’d go for it.

Then there’s solar-powered fl ight. In Switzerland, in early July, an experimental solar-powered aircraft took off on an historic journey. The single-seater plane has a giant airliner-sized wingspan (at 63 metres, equivalent to that of an Airbus A340), and relies on 12,000 solar cells and almost half a ton of batteries for motive power. The aircraft fl ew 8,500 metres before making a slow night-time descent. The seven-year project has the objective ultimately of fl ying around the world on solar energy.

Finally, there was a case of good old-fashioned air rage. A German football fan was given a suspended jail term for shoving airline cabin crew after his fl ight was denied landing permission in Durban, South Africa. The man was among hundreds of fans who missed the Germany-Spain semi-fi nal match because of landing problems at King Shak International Airport in Durban. Apparently the man had pushed the crew, screamed, sworn and refused repeated commands to return to his seat: normal fan behaviour in the UK.

Air rage is still quite common on commercial fl ights – usually accompanied by too much alcohol, but this is probably a fi rst in the World Cup annals. In declining to award a custodial sentence the sympathetic judge said, “I’m not going to add to your burden.”

Then, did you catch the one about the chubby queen of a small Pacifi c Island nation who got stuck in the aircraft toilet – a right royal jam? Remember, you heard it here fi rst.

Blood and Divinity –

Shocking Asia

The festival illustrates a fascinating aspect of Phuket’s cultural traditions – the complex intermingling of Chinese religious beliefs, with Thai native dogma. During the 19th century tin ore was discovered in the Kathu area and in 1895 the Governor Praya Jerm moved the capital town there, from Ta Reua. Hundreds of Hokkien Chinese were drafted in to do the mining. They either brought their families with them or intermarried with the locals. The Chinese community soon gained such critical mass that an itinerant Chinese opera company visited to entertain them. Here the story gets a little confused, but basically the whole district was struck by a major epidemic and almost everybody except the opera players became sick. Following their beliefs, the players had stuck to their religious calendar, which at this time of year required that they observe a strict vegetarian diet and off er prayers to two Chinese gods, Kiew Ong Tai and Yok Ong Sone

Teh. The residents concluded that this religious observance was the reason for the visitors’ invulnerability.

An alternative explanation may be that, since Kathu was a swampy jungle and it was the time of the monsoon rains, the visitors may have introduced a malarial strain to which they themselves were immune. When the rains stopped the breeding ponds of the mosquitoes disappeared and the epidemic abated naturally.

Be that as it may. The following year, the Haio Lan and Lian Tui regalia and sacred scripts were brought from China. When this precious cargo arrived at the port of Bang Niao, the whole community went there to welcome the ship. The tradition of processions was thus born.

This vibrant event is held over a nine-day period in late September, early October. Each year, at this time the area around Phuket’s fresh market becomes congested with food stalls, and every building is festooned with red lanterns and Chinese dragons. The focus is the Jui Tui shrine.

Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival8-16 October 2010

On the fi rst night of the ninth lunar month, a sacred ten-metre lantern pole is raised to facilitate the arrival of the gods, and at midnight, nine lanterns are suspended – one for each god. In a slightly anomalous observance the Hindu god Shiva is also believed to be present, and just to be on the safe side off erings are made to Lam Tao and Pak Tao. The festival then continues for nine more days with much burning of incense, banging of drums and letting off of fi reworks to ward off evil spirits.

The bizarre climax of the celebration is the street processions of devotees known as "Ma Song" or ‘possessed horses’. These religious zealots elevate themselves to a trancelike state and perform acts of mortifi cation, which range from walking across red-hot coals to immersing themselves in hot oil. Adherents also pierce their faces and tongues with everything from skewers to bicycle spokes. Believe it or not, this self-mutilation results in little bleeding or subsequent scarring – stranger than fi ction.

On the evening of Saturday the 16th of October, there’s a huge procession around Phuket Town, with people carrying statues of

the gods. This ends in Sapan Hin. Many restaurants and stalls all over the island will fl y yellow banners

decorated with red script, proclaiming that they are off ering authentic vegetarian food, and it’s delicious. Somehow the cooks manage to prepare dishes from soybean and protein substitute products which are just as tasty as the normal fare.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Finding a spa in Patong is easy. But if you want fi rst-class tropical treatments in a superb beachfront setting, your choice is very limited. Fortunately, the newly-opened Swasana Spa at Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort & Spa, provides the perfect answer. With two luxurious treatment rooms for couples, complete with private steam room and oversize twin Jacuzzi, one single treatment rooms and two beachfront Thai Massage rooms, Swasana Spa is unique in Patong – blending sublime treatments with a spectacular beachside location.

Whether you’re suff ering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start.

My journey began with a Herbal Steam treatment in the aromatic steam room. Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing power eases away aches and stress.

Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling smooth and silky.

Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called ‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous, fl owing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands

worked their magic on my body, I felt I had left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage with natural creams, this treatment cleansed and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles. With all my senses heightened, I detected the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough to eat, but alas just one of the natural ingredients in the creams my therapist was using. This one is a must for anyone thinking of having a ‘face lift’!

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept: "Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club, where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas, is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon Beach and 20 minutes from Patong Beach. It is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai style, set amongst 15 rai (6 acres) of luxuriously landscaped tropical forest.

I bought a house in Kathu. It’s cheaper than renting in the long run, and gives me a feeling of security.

How is Phuket from your point of view? Developing and in transition. It's like a teenager not really knowing which way to move forward, lacking a little in direction, sometimes immature. In my opinion the island needs stronger local government and clearer direction.

Garbage, environmental issues, and traffi c congestion are all areas where the authorities always seem to be playing ‘catch-up’. People’s attitudes are changing too. It concerns me that they seem to care less about each other these days.

What is you marital status? I’m not married, but I’ve been in a relationship with my partner Siriluck for over fi ve years. I have one son who is studying in Australia.

How often do you go back to visit your country? I visit my home and my father regularly, at least four times a year. My mother passed away some 10 years ago.

Do you plan to retire? I’ve no immediate plans that way, as I’m enjoying what life and work has to off er at the moment. There are too many challenges ahead. I don’t think I’ll ever really stop working.

Tell us about your philosophy. I enjoy setting new goals and achieving them. I also like to travel. I do get bored easily, so work keeps me active.

What do you do with your free time? Play golf, have a massage or spend time with friends over a good meal. Sailing around the off shore islands is a real treat.

How often do you exercise? Not enough, I’m afraid, and my body weight is beginning to show that.

How do you divide time between work and your family? I don’t really compartmentalise things. Life is a mix of work, family and pleasure. I make the most of the opportunities I have.

Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? I’m a member of a number of local associations and clubs. I specially like the opportunities that Phuket's clubs and associations provide for friendship and interaction.

How would you rate the quality of your life? Excellent, but quality of life is what you make it. Phuket has so much on off er, and so many opportunities. There aren’t many places in the world that could provide the same lifestyle that I’ve come to enjoy here.

Where are you from originally? I was born in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia some 47 years ago.

Tell us about your early life. I was brought up in a nursing home. My mother was the matron, so it was inevitable I suppose that I’d get involved in medicine. I graduated as a nurse, and almost immediately decided to specialise in ambulance services. Initially, I worked providing emergency care directly, but soon progressed to motivating and training others, analysing emergency systems and moving paramedic training into the university sector. This focus on helping others has been my ruling passion since I was a boy.

How did you come to work in Phuket? I initially came to Thailand some 14 years ago, spending time in the north, before moving to Phuket seven years ago. I was initially invited to work here by a private hospital group, sponsored by the Thai Government. I was employed as a ‘foreign expert’ under the Thai Board of Investment program to work with hospitals to build new facilities, and improve the quality of nursing and emergency services.

Seven years ago, I met Dr. Anuroj Thansirioj, the founder of Phuket International Hospital and I recognised that we shared a mutual interest in the provision of quality healthcare. He invited me to join the hospital management team. It was the opportunity of a lifetime.

What are your duties at the hospital? Firstly to ensure that foreign patients receive the care they expect, and then some. Secondly, that the hospital develops for the benefi t of all the stakeholders. We now have a team which is devoted to clinical excellence and professionalism. Some time ago I coined the slogan ‘caring people, curing people’. It’s become our mission statement.

Any problems? There’s always problems working in a multi-cultural environment. To succeed, tolerance, understanding and fl exibility are key. My job is to decide what’s important and concentrate on that. Thais, I fi nd, perform better when work is ‘fun’.

The economic downturn is another diffi culty which has impacted on our business, particularly as we’re in the middle of our expansion plan – an exciting and challenging time.

Do you have any other responsibilities? Yes, I oversee a Thai company, Emergency Asia, which provides emergency management and training services around the region, particularly in developing countries. I also consult for the Thai Ministry of Health, off ering assistance in the development of their ambulance program. These responsibilities and arranging the transfer of patients, takes me round the world.

Who is the person who has most infl uenced you? Two people have had a signifi cant infl uence on my life: my mother and Dr Anuroj Tharasirioj, the founder of Phuket International Hospital. Both had values and ambitions that impacted strongly on me. Both are remembered for giving their time and lives for the good of others – something that deeply infl uenced me. The memory of their compassion and dedication to helping others remains a strong motivator.

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket? I live in Kathu, about one kilometre from the hospital. I needed to be near work, so I don’t waste precious time battling the traffi c. I work all hours.

Phuket has plenty of choices when it comes to places to see and things to do. This month we’d like to off er you a guide to some activities which will give you an insight into Phuket’s cultural side, away from the usual tourist attractions. We hope that this may enhance your holiday experience and perhaps persuade you to return in the future.

Mee Sue: Phuket’s breakfast noodles with a salty taste and white colour when uncooked are boiled and fl avoured with oriental spices. They can be served with sliced pork or chicken accompanied by boiled rice or rice soup. Kuo Kwan Restaurant, located on Phuket Road near Robinson’s department store, is rightly famous for this simple but tasty dish.

Oh Tao: (Also known as Hoi Tod Hokgian). This is a fried oyster dish prepared with eggs, fl our, bean sprouts and taro root. It’s a favourite Phuket snack. Look for it at the Oh Tao Wongwian Restaurant, located near the Clock Tower Circle, Phuket Road, or at the Oh Tao Restaurant next to Bang Neaw Municipality School, Phuket Road.

Oh Aew: An unbeatable Phuket dessert which is made from jellied banana-fl our mixed with boiled red beans, ice, and sweet red syrup: available everywhere.

Try the Local Food. The island has a unique cuisine and both its entrées and desserts are a combination of local and Chinese cooking styles. International visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to sample the mouth-watering and unique off erings of Phuket’s kitchens. We have the inside track on toothsome dishes which will tempt your taste buds. Please allow us to off er a few examples:

Dim Sum: Dim Sum. This is a steamed dumpling, fi lled with a choice of every imaginable variety of sweet or savoury fi lling, sometimes accompanied by Chinese herb chicken soup and condiments.

Kanom Jin Phuket: This is a vermicelli-based dish served with a variety of curry sauces. Often eaten as breakfast, it comes with a range of fresh vegetables, boiled eggs, and curried fi sh mousse (Hor Mok).

Mee Hok Kian: This is made with large yellow noodles similar to Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone soup and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee Hok Kian Pak includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork crackling and a choice of pork, fi sh or squid. Recommended Mee Hok Kian restaurants are Mee Ao Gay, located on Poonpol Road, and Mee Sapam at Sapam Village, Thepkasattri Road.

Things to do in Phuket

View Antique Buildings.A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called Sino-Portuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains, and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fi ne example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more.

The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City Bank are further examples of architecture from the past. All well worth a visit.

Join the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.Phuket still has a large Chinese community, so the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a major event on the island’s calendar. The festival occurs on the fi rst day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar (usually around late September or early October). This year it runs from the 8th to the 16th October. The festival mostly takes place within Phuket Town. Enjoy the amazing street processions which usually occur early morning around the town. At the same time, you can sample a wide range of vegetarian food. Many restaurants and stalls all over the island will fl y yellow banners decorated with red script, proclaiming that they’re off ering authentic vegetarian dishes. It’s all part of the festivities.

PALAZZOA 'jewel box' of a venue, this mirrored palaceis much more than a dinner, more than a show...

Unique! How many times do we hear this or that on Phuket described as ‘unique’, only to fi nd that it’s just same-same, one of a boring bunch? You have to ask yourself: is there anything on this island

that’s truly unique (apart from the place itself, of course)?

Let’s explore that much misused word… First, forget ‘very unique’, ‘most unique’ and their ilk. Something is either unique or it isn’t. It’s as simple as that. It’s one of a kind. OK, so how to judge if something is unique? After all, most off erings have the odd unique element, while the whole may be – and usually is – just another also-ran.

A good place to start may be how easy or hard the thing is to describe in a couple of simple, well-worn words… if not,

whether a few more nicely chosen words are enough to get the message across. That’s when I found myself stumbling; a few words simply could not describe Palazzo Phuket.

When two passionate, enthusiastic and consummate professionals combine more than 20 years of experience, success and innovation with a broad concept that has taken off like a rocket in New York, Brussels, Paris et al, but is nowhere to be seen in Thailand, then I start to get the feeling it could just be that Phuket rarity – something really unique.

Alexandra and Vladislav Bond were amongst the fi rst handful of Ukrainian performers to travel west to entertain Europeans without the ever-watchful presence of ‘minders’, when the 'eastern bloc' started to come unglued. They went on to perform, direct and produce for 20 years throughout Europe and elsewhere around the globe, winning prestigious awards for their work in Paris and Monte Carlo.

When they’d achieved much of what there was to accomplish on the road, they had a dream – to bring their accumulated talent, experience and enthusiasm to bear on something new, something diff erent for Phuket.

When Alexandra and Vladislav open their doors, more that 20 international entertainers will have descended upon their ‘palace’ from the four corners of the world.

To say that the dinner is accompanied by the show, or that the show goes with the dinner is to miss the point.

Palazzo Phuket is a theatre restaurant, it’s a dinner show; it carries more than a hint of 1920s vaudeville with a just a whiff of Cirque du Soleil. It’s interactive, entertaining and fun – all in the timeless atmosphere of the Palazzo’s luxurious and nostalgic ‘mirrored palace’, a ‘jewel box’ of a venue you won’t believe until you set foot inside.

Towards the end of October, when Alexandra and Vladislav open their doors, more that 20 international performers will have descended upon this ‘palace’ from the four corners of the world – singers, musicians, acrobats, dancers, magicians, aerial performers, comedians and even limbo dancers – an extraordinary ensemble creating a level and style of entertainment that Phuket really has never seen before.

But that's only part of it. A spacious, fully equipped kitchen staff ed and run by one of Phuket’s best international catering establishments, under the direction of Chef Maya Noosawat and Richard Randall, will be responsible for a 5-star, 5-course gourmet dinner they describe as “Mediterranean cuisine with an Asian fl avour”. How does

Lobster & Cognac Bisque, Beef Carpaccio & Japanese Caviar, Pan Fried Scallops & Prawns wrapped in Crispy Yellow Noodle with Lemon Garnish, Duck Wellington with Pineapple Sauce & New Potatoes and a delicious Cream Cheese Mousse with Dragon Fruit Sauce sound? Don’t eat meat? With typical attention to detail, Palazzo Phuket off ers a completely separate 5-course vegetarian menu.

To say that the dinner is accompanied by the show, or that the show goes with the dinner is to miss the point. Unlike any other entertainment you’ve experienced, for three and a half hours, the show and your dinner blend seamlessly together; your waiters and waitresses are actors, interacting with the you as much or as little as suits you.

The action doesn’t just take place on a stage – it is all around you, yet mysteriously not intrusive; you will get to give your gourmet dinner the attention it deserves! And if you really want a romantic dinner, they’ve thought of that too! Discreetly located tables for two, that still allow you to enjoy the show as much as each other, are just one of the many refi nements that have not been missed.

I could go on, but a few surprises won't go amiss, right? In my book, Palazzo ticks all the boxes to make it unique – one of a kind in Phuket and, although predictions can be dicey, I'll stick my neck out and say this is going to be one huge success. I suggest you book early to avoid being disappointed – then stand behind me in the queue.

The infection is either active or latent. In a case of active TB, symptoms are present and the infection is infectious, meaning it can be passed on to others. Simple tests can be done to confi rm that someone has the condition usually a small skin test and/or a chest x-ray. Sputum, which is expectorated, can also be tested.

In the latent form the organisms have infected a person, but they aren’t showing any symptoms of the disease. Many people have latent TB, and it’s not usually detected unless your doctor

There was the hope and expectation that Tuberculosis, or TB as it’s commonly called, would have been eradicated by the turn of the century. However, this hasn’t been achieved, and we still see cases here in Phuket.

It’s a chronic or long-term infection, usually in the lung which can be spread from person to person through the air usually by coughing, sneezing or living in close proximity to others.

TB causes coughing and patients may even cough up blood. Chest pain, weakness, weight loss, lack of appetite, chills, fever, and night sweats are common symptoms. It’s also claimed that immigrants have a higher likelihood of having the disease, or being able to transfer it to others.

Health mattersTuberculosis

is looking for it. This can be the case when applying for visas to countries like Australia which may require a medical clearance. The latent form can progress to active TB.

There is no typical person who is more likely to contract the disease, but those with diabetes, chronic renal disease, drug users, HIV patients, patients taking immunosuppressive medications, and patients with certain cancers have a higher risk. Generally these groups of people have a lowered immunity to TB. This is also the reason why Thailand has seen an increase in the number of infections since the 1990s, as it correlates with an increase in HIV infections.

One of the problems that Thailand faces in its fi ght against the infection is Multiple Drug Resistant TB (MDR TB). This class of the disease is resistant to two of the frontline drugs which are commonly used in treatments. However, in Phuket the prevalence of this strain is low. It’s much commoner in Thailand’s border regions. The increase in the incidence of MDR TB, is because of poor compliance by patients in following prescription instructions.

TB is treatable, but it usually takes up to nine months using a range of diff erent antibiotics, and patient compliance is essential if the disease is to be cured. Some patients don’t take their medication regularly, or cease taking it altogether as soon as the symptoms disappear. This allows the disease to become resistant to the antibiotic medication

so patient education and compliance with treatment regimes is essential if it is to be eradicated. Once TB becomes multiple drug resistant, treatment may take up to 18 months, with many second line antibiotics being used, and there’s a considerable increase in the cost of this treatment.

Treatment of TB is eff ective, as long as the doctor’s orders are followed and medication taken as prescribed. If you have a persistent cough, feel tired, weak, and have unexplained weight loss or have other symptoms mentioned in this article, see your doctor and then follow his advice.
