Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian
Supportive Seabees! The Smith Seabees had a major celebration last Friday to get ready for the EOG tests.
Over the last few Fridays, they have been participating in an Amazing Race. On May 20th the 3rd through 5th
teachers participated in a scavenger hunt to see who would get a head start in the final race. Putting together a
global map puzzle was the final event. Select students from each grade were chosen by teachers to put the
puzzle together. As it turned out, the team which had no head start advantage, the third graders, completed
their puzzle first!
After the final race, the students
from K, 1st and 2nd grades performed
cheers for their selected grade levels. The
kindergarten class sang a version of the
Whip, Nae Nae song using words dealing
with taking a test (“Now watch me work.
Now watch me bubble!”). The first grade
sang an original song to the tune of Don’t
Worry, be Happy (“Don’t worry, test
happy!”). The second grades encouraged
test takers to RACE (R-Reread, A-Attitude,
C- Commitment, E- Evaluate).
(photo above: third graders were
the winning puzzle solvers)
All of the cheers were wonderful and they pumped
up the crowd of future test takers. The gym was so
loud that we thought the roof was going to come
off the place!

After the festivities, the 3rd
through 5th graders heard an
inspiring speech by former
NFL defensive lineman,
Renaldo Wynn. Wynn has
played for the Jacksonville
Jaguars, Washington
Redskins, New York Giants
and New Orleans Saints.
He currently works for Joe
Gibbs Racing in the Game
Plan for Life Ministry. He told
the students to “Believe it and
achieve it.” He also encouraged them to “Do your best and
forget the rest!” Finally he reminded them to remember “WIN”
(What’s Important Now).
What a wonderful way to get fired up
for the upcoming tasks at hand. At
Smith, we support each other!

Shout Out from Haw River Elementary Christy Zimmerman, School Counselor
On Monday, May 23, Haw River students and staff joined together for an exciting End of Grade Testing Pep Rally! The purpose of the pep rally was to encourage and motivate our students in grades three, four, and five to do their best on the End of Grade Tests. To begin the pep rally, our lower grades students lined the sidewalks outside to cheer on the upper grades students as they traveled into the gym. As the third, fourth, and fifth graders walked through the tunnel of younger students, they were greeted with loud cheers and motivating posters!
The theme of the pep rally was "Knock Out that Test," which included many athletic competitions. Mr. Lewis, our assistant principal, served as the MC and referee for the entire event. A brave third grade student, Melony Vega, won a boxing match against the EOG by using her test-taking strategies! Students in each of the lower grade levels also performed an EOG cheer for their upper grades peers. Then, staff members performed a dance to the song, "Cheerleader" to remind the students that their teachers are among their biggest supporters for their
academic success. Finally, a group of teachers competed in an intense game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos! In addition to the spirited competitions, student members of our Percussion Ensemble performed several outstanding tunes throughout the assembly, which really helped to increase school spirit! Our End of Grade Testing Pep Rally was a huge success as it helped to energize our students to perform their best on the End of Grade assessments.

Shout Out from Graham High Tracey Patterson History Comes Alive @ GHS! Graham High School’s AP US History students did an outstanding job making historical figures come alive!
Guided by their teacher, Ms. Ashleigh Denny, these students stayed in character as teachers and classes toured the US History Wax Museum. Each “wax” figure was tasked to explain who they were and why they were significant to the forming of our country. While dressed to the nines and in front of mini sets, figures such as past presidents, medical professionals, adventurers, inventors and many more explained to “tourists” who they were and what has
made them stand out in US History. Who knows, maybe one day, a young student will be dressed up as a former GHS student talking about his/her great contributions to our country!

You know your principal is AWEsome when he agrees to sleep on the roof and then ACTUALLY DOES IT! The students at Alexander Wilson Elementary challenged Mr. Richardson to sleep on the roof if they could read 1 million minutes between November and April 30. He chose the hottest day of the school year to sleep up there, but thank goodness his students LOVE him!
Not only did they wish him well on the way out, but there were families who came by all the way until 11:00pm! There was a water balloon fight that happened around 7:45 and one student MADE his mom come by twice to check on his principal. WFMY News 2 also came by and broadcast the challenge on the 11:00 news Thursday night. Mr. Richardson we think you are AWEsome!!
