A Message from Fr. Paolo
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, May is “a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary”, as Pope Francis reminded us in his recent Letter to the Faithful for the Month of May. The Pope invited us to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary, individually but also at home with our families. A few months ago, I was praying the rosary at the shrine with Andrew and few other parishioners. It was a Wednesday afternoon, the time for our weekly rosary. Halfway through it, a middle-aged man in shabby clothes came in and sat down. It was a homeless person we knew pretty well. He used to come to the shrine fairly regularly just to hang out and chat. That day the poor soul was intoxicated and towards the end of the rosary started to ramble, getting louder and louder. When the rosary was over, I walked over to tell him to be quiet and try to calm him down. When he saw me, he shouted with a nasty tone of voice: “What’s the need to repeat the same prayer 10,000 times? She knows what you want to say, saying it one is just enough!” Even if he was clearly under the influence of something, I thought to myself: “He’s got a point. Why is the rosary is made up of five decades? Why do we need to repeat the Hail Mary 50 times?” I took his question seriously and the answer came out straight from my heart: “You know”, I said, “When you love someone, to say: “I love you” just one time is not enough. You feel the need to re-peat it over and over to express your affection. Also, the person you love is happy to hear it said out loud multiple times. It’s the same with Mary: she’s happy to hear her children saying to her 50 times how much we love and need her.” As we’re praying the rosary during this month of May, let us remember that “contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial.” (Pope Francis) God bless, Fr.
