President’s ReportHaving just chaired the 60th Annual General Meeting of the

County Cricket Club, it was very comforting to know that our

fi nances are in good order – thanks to all the diligent work of the

Committee – led from the front by Toby Shaw. It is so often said

in business circles “fi nd the busiest man to do a job and he will

do it well” – this is your chairman.

However we must not be complacent, with ever increasing

costs, we should, perhaps, seek additional ways to improve our

position. Why don’t we all “ASK A FRIEND” to be a member – at

£20 per annum it has to be serious value.

Once again our annual “Royal Ascot” day at Wrekin College was a resounding success,

thanks again to Toby Shaw & Richard Pearson (of ResourceBank) and all the other sponsors,

and of course the Headmaster of Wrekin College for the venue – a fantastic setting and long

may it continue.

I will not bore you with a match report as this can be found later in the Handbook.

I don’t think that Di & I missed a game, along with our regular stalwart (Peter “driver” Bradley)

and we were especially thrilled with the following at Bournemouth with over 40 supporters

making the trip, it nearly felt like a home fi xture! My sincere thanks to all the supporters for

their attendance at so many games, I know that the players really appreciate it.

I cannot close this report without personally thanking James Ralph for his second term as

Captain. He took over in mid season (2013) and has done an excellent job. He fi rst played

for the County way back in 1998 and has been a class act for some 17 seasons (except for

a brief fl irtation with Herefordshire). He still has a lot of cricket to play and I hope he will

continue to make himself available for selection under our new Captain – Steve Leach.

Good luck Steve, I am confi dent that you will execute your duties as a natural leader (well

you and I had our formative years at the same prep school!). If you need any advice you only

have to ask! (then you can do it your way!)

Finally a big thank you to Karl Krikken & Bryan Jones for their invaluable input with the

players. It never ceases to amaze me with all the pre-match activities you seem to perform

every morning on match days – baffl ing most of it. In my day we sat down with a Senior

Service and a glass of something! How times have changed.

I hope to see you all next season, and don’t forget “ASK A FRIEND” to join us as well. It truly

is a great journey.

The county opened their season with a disappointing 132 run defeat at home to Cumberland.

Shropshire were bowled out for 137 inside 23 overs in reply to Cumberland’s competitive

total of 269-8 in their fi rst Unicorns Trophy group game at Shrewsbury’s London Road

ground.

Cumberland, invited to bat fi rst by Shropshire captain James Ralph, posted a challenging

total of 269-8 from their 50 overs.

Penrith batsman Alex Atkinson top scored with 50 and opener Karl Turner chipped in with

38 for the visitors.

Ben Sanderson (2-35), Gurman Randhawa (2-45) and Jack Edwards (2-47) were the pick of

the Shropshire bowlers.

Shropshire were boosted by the availability of England under-19 internationals Ed Barnard

and Joe Clarke in the top four of their batting line up.

But the promising pair, both made available by Worcestershire, were unable to trouble the

scorers as the hosts quickly found themselves in trouble at 15-3 with Ryan Lockley also

falling cheaply.

Opener Steve Leach, playing on his home club ground, was high on confi dence having

cracked his maiden fi rst-class century a few days earlier, an unbeaten 110 for Oxford MCCU

against Surrey, but he departed for 19 to leave Shropshire struggling at 42-4.

It quickly became 62-7 and, although Randhawa (34) and Ross Aucott (28) offered some

resistance down the order, Shropshire were removed for 137, with Scott Lees (3-21) and

Turner (3-36) both among the wickets for a Cumberland side captained by former Durham

man Gary Pratt.

“We knew that we had to bat a bit of time and one of the top six had to get in, but it never

transpired,” added coach Krikken.

“To get three down fairly quickly you’ve got to consolidate, but we were never able to do that

and but for a bit of a rally at the end it could have been a lot worse.
