From the chairman A new year - meaning new

beginnings, and a fresh start

with New Year's resolutions

for many. This new year will

see many new challenges for

our club members -

photographically speaking.

Your club has planned many

outings for photographic opportunities, as well as

many Workshops to assist you in increasing your

photographic skills and knowledge during 2018. I

encourage our members to participate in these.

I would like to thank Denise, Erich, Nico and the rest

of the Salon team for all their hard work in running

a very successful Boksburg Camera Club Salon.

I would like to briefly discuss the "set subject" that

we have each month. The set subject section for

each month is an attempt to get photographers to

experiment in "different" areas / aspects / genres of

photography, and to try to get the photographer

out of their "comfort zone" and expand their

photographic skills. What usually happens in

practice, is that we tend to rifle through our old

images, and find something that seems to fit the

theme, then enter that. We should in fact be seeing

the set subject as a challenge to widen our

knowledge and experience in different aspects of

photography. The set subject should rather be

viewed as a monthly assignment, and the

photographer should be planning and doing the

photographs as if it was an assignment.

I know that some of the more experienced

photographers would more than likely have some

images that fit the theme, and are most welcome to

enter them, but I would like to encourage them to

re-visit the subject and challenge them to produce

some new material.

Once a year, the committee sits and deliberates the

set subjects for the new year. We attempt to differ

and vary the subjects to encompass a wide variety

of subject matter and photographic techniques, to

encourage our members to try something different

from what they are used to doing. We have also

planned some of the outings and workshops to

cover some of the set subject topics.

I wish to extend a warm welcome to our new

members that joined in January. The whole

committee and I wish you a long and satisfying

membership with our club

Keep those shutters clicking!

About Boksburg Camera Club

Here is a summary of what you can expect to

you have any further queries please do not

hesitate to speak to one of our committee

members.

start. The points will be given as “Bronze,

give you feedback on how your photos can

be improved to obtain higher points in

future, where necessary. We will also break

after which judging will continue

With mobile phones increasingly having better and more capable cameras, more

photographers are turning to them to take more of their photos.

But smartphone photography isn't just about pointing, tapping, and shooting...

Instead, you still need to approach mobile photography like you would with a traditional

camera.

With that in mind, here's a few quick tips to help you get better photos with your

smartphone.

Use the HDR Feature

Not that long ago, the HDR feature

on mobile phones was terrible - if

the phone even had that feature.

That's not the case today.

Though the HDR function on my

phone can't match the one on my

Nikon D850, it's still a respectable

performer.

13

That's good for me because I can't always grab shots with my phone in perfect lighting.

Instead, when the light is extremely bright, I use the HDR feature on my phone, and you can

too.

What HDR will do is take several shots and blend them together, resulting in a final image

that's better-exposed.

That unappealing harsh lighting with bright highlights and dark shadows will be negated

with the HDR shot that preserves the detail throughout the dynamic range.

Get a Good Set of Lenses

Yes, you read that right...

Not only are there plenty of lenses that you can buy to use with your mobile phone, but

there's some really good ones, too.

Kenko has a set of smartphone lenses that certainly fit the bill.

14

They simply clip onto your phone - so they're not just easy to use, but they also create a

nice, tight seal with the phone's lens to minimize light leaks.

You can choose between three lenses - a wide-angle/macro combination, a super-wide

angle, and a fisheye lens.

Each has its own virtues, but the common feature among them is the sheer quality of the

construction.

That's particularly true of the lens glass, which is finely processed so that your images are

sharp, clear, and have minimal aberrations.

And, as noted above, these lenses simply clip onto your phone's built-in lens.

That means it's a quick and easy solution to getting better photos with your phone.

As if that's not enough, these lenses can also be used as kickstands for your phone.

15

That gives you the capability of setting your phone's timer and getting in front of the lens

for some self-portraits or group shots.

And by using the kickstand feature and your camera's timer, you can also get sharper

photos because without touching the camera, there's no possibility of camera shake

causing your images to be blurry.

From landscapes to portraits to macro photography and just about everything in between,

these clip-on lenses by Kenko can help you elevate your smartphone photography game.

Use Manual Controls

Just like with a traditional camera, the more control you take over how the camera

functions, the more likely you are to get photos that are the quality that you want.

By taking control over things like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, you can fine-tune how

your smartphone images look and feel.

Just a few years ago, manual controls on a smartphone camera didn't exist.

But now, many smartphone cameras have manual controls built right in.

16

If your phone's camera doesn't have manual controls, you can download any number of

apps, like VSCO, that do give you that control.

VSCO and many other apps also offer other expandable controls, like shooting in RAW,

white balance adjustments, and controls for contrast, saturation, sharpness, and so on.

Many apps, again, like VSCO, give you a host of filters as well, which allows you to further

create your artistic vision by adding grunge effects, colour effects, and black and white

effects.

Our mobile phone cameras aren't quite there yet in terms of becoming the only camera we

need, but they're on their way, that's for sure.

That means that future phones in our pockets will have even more bells and whistles that

help us take better photos than ever.

But you don't have to wait for the future to arrive. By using the tips outlined here, you can

begin maximizing the potential of your smartphone photos!

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR KIDS: ACTIVITIES THEY CAN DO!

Lifestyle

One of my friends wants to give her son a project and thought a photography one would be

fun! I love this idea and wanted to give you some ideas to do photography for kids.

Photography for kids

Photography for Kids: Ages 3-5

You may not be able to teach them as many skills at this age, but you can familiarize them

with a camera and give them different activities they can do.

Activity ideas:

– Learn their colours – Have the child walk around the house or outside and look for things

of a certain colour and photograph them.

– Starts with… – Ask them to find objects that start with a certain letter and photograph

them.

– Their name – They could either find objects that start with the letters in their name or

they could look for things that look like letters to make their name.

Photography for Kids: Ages 6-10

You can teach this age range even more about photography. Start with some basics in

composition.

– Rule of thirds

– Limb chops

– Leading lines

– Fill the frame

– Negative Space

You can tackle lighting as well.

– Catchlights

– Backlighting

– Low light

– Window light

26

Activity ideas:

– Skill building – Before you give them an activity you can have them practice the skills you

want them to learn. If you want to focus on composition, have them read the above posts.

They can choose one skill a day. Ask them to create 3-5 images displaying that composition

guide.

– Story time – Have them take a photograph of anything and write a story about it. It could

be of children at the park. Name the children and create a story behind them. This will help

their language arts skills as well as their creativity

– Scavenger Hunt – Create a list of 20 items they need to find in the house or in the yard.

Hand over the camera and have them photograph the options as they find them. Be sure to

throw in something of a challenge.

– ABC’s – Have them photograph something that starts with each letter of the alphabet

– Create a blog – You could give them their own corner of the internet. Feel free to keep

their blog private for only family to view if you choose. They can post their images, add

captions, and record what they are learning.

Feel free to take their photos and stories and compile them in a digital photo album for

them. How excited would they be to have their own book of their own images!

Why stop there? Why not take on your own photography activity? Are you ready to capture

those everyday moments and turn them into lasting memories? Take our 30-day challenge

TODAY!

Photography activities for kids broken down by ages! Yes, an easy to follow directions for

kids to tackle photography projects and learn photography.

now you can!
