Sickle cell Anaemia
What is it?
• The Hemoglobin protein in blood is effected
• This protein, which is different because of the iron found in it, is responsible for carrying oxygen within blood
• This causes red blood cells to instead of being flexible and disc-shaped, these cells are more stiff and curved in the shape of the old farm tool known as a sickle
What does this do
• Instead of the blood cells lasting 120 days or around 3 months their life span is much shorter 10-20 days
• This is where the Anemia comes in.
• Anemia is when the bodies blood cell count, or Hemoglobin count is below normal
It is a genetic disorder
• It is passed down through gene’s much like blood typing.
• This means the only way one can get the disease is if their mother and father are carriers.
It does have some pro’s
• Sickle cell trait but not the disease has been found to help people resist malaria
• This means in places with high chances of Malaria Sickle is more common.
• Historic Sickle cell Historic Malaria
