The objective of this project is to demonstrate an Open Field Message Bus

(OpenFMB) Reference Architecture that will enable the grid to effectively support

large-scale complex operations, such as with distribution systems at electric

utilities, which allow for an integration and wider penetration of renewable, clean

energy resources.

The premise of the project is that management of distribution systems with large penetrations of

renewable resources is impacted by three major issues:

1. The lack of standardization and interoperability between the vast array of equipment in

operation and on the market, most of which use different and proprietary means of

communication

2. The magnitude of the network and the information it generates and consumes

3. Energy production from renewable resources is in general, hard to predict and variable at time

of production.

• Predicting the production of renewable resources on the grid

• Grid Resource optimization with central monitoring and control, combined with Peer to Peer

monitoring and control

• Grid monitoring and diagnostics

• Information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) integration

• Timely access to actionable operational device data in the field

• Improving the response time of integrated distributed energy resources in the field

• Lowering the total cost of ownership of integrated distributed energy resources

• Reducing the risk of employing advanced distributed energy resource technologies

• Accelerating the software development cycle time for grid control and management

The OpenFMB Architecture solution was validated in a laboratory setting at NREL ESIF, and in field

demonstrations at both Duke Energy and CPS Energy. Microgrid technical and economic costs/benefits

were analyzed and reported

flexibility and options when designing their systems:

The Basic Concept:

increase capacity of grid to host renewables using microgrids

Actual Variability

Increased penetration of clean renewable sources requires

upgrading controls and communication architectures in order

to optimize use of these resources alongside today’s power

grid.

Power production from renewable resources is often

uncertain and variable.

Renewable resources and control equipment are

now becoming available from many manufacturers—but

their ability to easily interoperate is limited

due to lack of alignment with common standards

Cyber Security is also an on-going challenge

• NREL seeks integration services and industry expertise to develop a

secure interoperable platform for incorporating and optimizing

renewable energy sources and microgrids, as well as to set the stage

for industry alignment with related standards

• OMNETRIC Group is the prime, partnering with Duke, Siemens and University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA)

• CPS is a supporting partner providing a compatible MGMS site at no cost
