Keynote: Defining the Strategy & Business Case to Gain Executive Support for a PLM Program

Deloitte will present an approach for conducting a Teamcenter specific PLM diagnostic and deriving a PLM roadmap. A capability maturity model aligned with the Teamcenter modules is used to gauge the maturity of an organization’s PLM processes. Tools such as churn analysis, value-stream mapping, resource usage and improvement metrics are used to measure inefficiencies. A prioritized and sequenced deployment roadmap is then developed to improve PLM capability in critical areas via implementation within Teamcenter. The Teamcenter Value Map is used to develop the business case and visually represent how specific modules align with improvement actions and can lead to improved shareholder value.

Teamcenter Reporting Framework and Reports for Security Compliance

This presentation will give an overview of the reporting framework available in Teamcenter, and provide a guide on when to leverage a particular framework. We will deep dive into custom reports scenario which presented a security challenge for us. After trying multiple options we put together a framework that enables custom reports without running into security challenges.We re-designed the custom reports capability to address a critical security gap as stated below without doing client customization: ”Custom Reports are driven by ITK executable. As ITK programs are not executed in the context of Teamcenter session, business user is required to enter plain text credentials on the report wizard”.

Additive Manufacturing: Building the Digital Thread

Deloitte and Siemens collaborated to develop and market an integrated Digital Thread for Additive Manufacturing (DTAM) prototype in response to the Department of Defense’s requirement to rapidly prototype and additively manufacture parts. The Digital Thread, a single seamless strand of data that stretches from the initial design to the finished part, promises to address many of the challenges hindering AM’s deployment outside the research lab. The DTAM prototype is a functional software tool that can be used as an accelerator when architecting a Digital Thread tailored to organizations requirements.

Success Factors in Aligning Teams on Standardized Process

Transforming engineering is in itself a huge challenge and it is compounded if you have multiple sites and business units that follow their own process and are at a different stage of digital evolution. One of the key success factors in aligning teams to a common standardized process is to bring in the industry best practice and then try to see why it won’t work for the new organization. In our experience we have seen 80% of the processes are common within an industry and there is 20% that is specific to an organization and that which defines their competitive advantage. Robotics & Intelligent Automation in Product Development

Traditionally, engineering was viewed as one department “safe” from automation. However, there is a growing need to free up some of the most valuable employees – designers and engineers – from mundane and routing tasks. Organizations are increasingly investing in Robotic and Intelligent Automation (whether RPA, Cognitive Automation, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence) solutions to streamline / simplify the activities involved in Engineering services and product development. Deloitte has studied several scenarios involved at customers where R&IA can be leveraged to provide cost savings, error reduction and complexity reduction in day to day engineering functions and also in the software and services supporting the engineering function. Some of the automations that have been developed and used in operations and transformation projects have been in the areas of CAD integration, data validation, error reduction and handling during interfacing of various systems and solutions amongst others. One of the biggest areas of focus has been in the areas of automating processing large amounts of data across systems to provide business insights, which if carried out without the use of automation would require the equivalent of more the 10 to 20 FTEs every month doing the same work. Processing large amount of data to provide insights during migration data validation, comparing engineering data across systems ( comparing Bill of materials across PLM and ERP systems ), handling of errors and monitoring error logs to provide advanced notification to users for blockages of work that may occur in the downstream process are some of the key automations that Deloitte has developed working with customers and studying their needs and issues. and accelerate the transformation with a pre-configured solution.

Workflow Compare Utility to enable Agile Development

Managing PLM development across multiple scrums in Agile methodology is a challenge, and is compounded when you have multiple teams working across geographies, and on overlapping areas of configuration. We highlight the approach of leveraging some of the Admin Data comparison tools to help merge the changes and streamline deployment of solution package across environments.  We have identified few areas where the Admin Data tools comparison falls short and provide an example for Workflow Comparison Utility that we developed to support our agile development and deployment.  Workflow Comparison Utility is a user interface tool, having leveraged admin data compare utility, with enrichments / enhancements to facilitate comparison of workflow templates, and generate delta report highlighting differences (Additions / Removal / Modifications).

Central Role of MES in the Digital Factory Realization

In a larger Digital Factory concept where various applications such as PLM, ERP, MES and Factory Operations are tightly integrated, MES plays an important role being recipient of data from PLM, ERP and from devices. This makes an MES application a pivotal aspect in realizing the digital factory transformation and that requires utmost attention. An MES application with PLM requires streamlined integration of Product Data, BOM Data, and close-loop Change Management Process. An MES application with ERP requires streamlined integration of Purchase Orders, Inventory, Manufacturing Orders, Resource Management etc. With connected devices it requires streamlined integration of operating parameters and collection of big data. With Manufactured Products (while they are in use with customers) it requires streamlined integration of performance and actual usage for any potential issues and predictive maintenance. Data Movement Case Study for PLM Transformations 

Data Migration on any PLM Transform project becomes one of the most important, if not the most important work stream. Data is the lifeblood of any system. Accuracy, completeness and functional relevance of the data in a new system will ultimately dictate whether the project was a success. Deloitte has developed, and client delivered, using Siemens data migration tools, together with an Informatica data transformation engine, an innovative approach to accelerate the migration of data from multiple Legacy Teamcenter and non-Teamcenter databases to Teamcenter 11.3. This solution merges data from structured and non-structured systems to bulk load object types of Parts (with subtypes), Documents, Engineering Change, Multiple BOMs, Relationships, and Datasets (CAD and Non-CAD) with an error rate of less than .15 % and achieving an average performance of over 1200 objects/sec. We will discuss the challenges, successes, lessons learned and tools/methodology of this highly flexible and efficient data migration solution.
