Sighthill Recipe
Take high flats as tall as a giant blocking out the sun from the school.
Mix in people running round like coco-pops getting whisked about in a bowl.
Stir in shops as busy as Santa’s elves during the Christmas time rush.
Sprinkle on school children as chatty as a disc-jocky on a non-stop radio.
Pour in noises like the wind blowing through empty flats like moaning elephants, a crowd of fans chanting at a football game, the rain falling like the sound of the sea, people at a baseball game shouting ‘GO TIGERS GO!’, children in a school playground talking talking talking, parrots saying ‘Pretty Polly, Pretty Polly, Pretty Polly.’ Then freeze the mixture like nervous pupils on school picture taking day as cold as lemonade taken straight from the freezer.
Then sniff the bang on smells as if breathing in lovely odours from the chippie.
Bake for 40 years on top of a volcano.
Then give to our parents to look after and nurture.

Sighthill Stories
We came to Sighthill on September 1974 my husband, two sons and myself. Both my sons were educated right here in St Stephens. The Head Mistress was Miss Docherty and Head Master Brother Mark.
Sighthill had a lovely community spirit lots of us were young mothers and we were active in the clubs and had fun with the kids.
I made a lot of friends and although most of us have left Sighthill we still keep in touch. We left in September 2001 after 27 years and I have so many happy memories but I do not have the time to write them all down.
We have 3 grandchildren Lauren now at St Roch’s (14) Jack (11) and Nadia (6) still keeping St Stephens going.

Sighthill
The high buildings, closeness to basic necessities such as Buchanan bus station, Royal Infirmary, Tesco, Lidl, Universities of Strathclyde and Caledonian, numerous colleges and the peace and tranquillity of the area is what makes Sighthill a memorable place to live. Sighthill with its heterogeneous society stands out.
It is the UK in Glasgow.

About Sri Lanka and my mum
When my mum was in Sri Lanka she used to go everywhere and she used to go alone or with an adult. She was little when she did that and she did it when she was a teenager too. When she was there she used to go to her school then come back straight away. Then she came to Scotland because of the war going on. The war is very bad.

Deborah’s story
I moved to Sighthill when I was 10 and found it to be a place filled with other kids to play and have fun with. As Sighthill was a very windy place, all the kids used to gather at the bottom of Fountainwell Avenue and hold our Jackets over our heads as make shift sails so the wind would catch them and propel us with great force down the pathway at the side of the block!
In the summer, we would climb up the steep hill at the side of the graveyard and use bits of cardboard to sit on and slide down the long, dried out grass which was great fun. There was always something to do there when we were kids and I look back fondly on those days.
