Sigma Newsletter Kappa Kappa Gamma This year has been an excit- ing one here at Sigma Chapter! We kicked 2011 off with Leadership Day in which the 2010 and 2011 Chapter Councils worked with Amelia McCormick, the Fraternity Chairman of Academic Excellence and Fraternity Trainer, on improv- ing leadership skills, setting goals for the year, and chapter officer transitions. The spring semester was full of volunteer events, including the Big Event, a campus-wide day of service throughout the city of Lincoln, Dance Marathon, benefit- ting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and Relay for Life, benefitting the American Cancer Society. We continued to support Kappa’s national philanthropy Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) with our pen pal program with a local Lincoln public school. In the spring, Chapter Council took a road trip to Colum- bia, Missouri for our regional Zeta Province meeting. We were able to meet officers from other chapters to share ideas. Sigma was awarded Excellence in Communication and the Barbara Sarich Programming Award, along with honorable men- tions in the Advisory Board Award and the Meg Cherry Smith Stan- dards Award. This summer was spent in preparation for Recruitment 2011, which went fabulously and brought us a New Member class of 41 outstanding women! We all grew closer to them during the New Member Program, and they were initiated on October 29, 2011. We are so excited to call them our sisters! The fall semester began with Sigma members returning to a house that had undergone amazing renovations done by our exception- al House Board. We held our an- nual Kappa Karnival that benefitted the Alzheimer’s Association, and in October we celebrated Kappa’s founding by honoring both our founders and the alumnae who con- tinue to serve Kappa. Homecoming this year was exceptionally exciting because of our three seniors chosen for Homecoming Court, the most of any house on campus! During Initiation Week, we hosted Meggie Centers, a Kappa Leadership Con- sultant. She was a joy to learn from and to hang out with! I have been honored to work with this year’s Chapter Council. Each member has dedi- cated herself to Sigma Chapter and the Fraternity, leaving a positive, lasting impression on the rest of the chapter. I have been so lucky to have such an amazing adviser, Mary Ford. She provides our chap- ter with a wealth of knowledge and support, and without her we could not have had such a successful year. I would like to thank our Advisory Board, House Board, and the Lincoln and Omaha Alumnae Associations for all that they do to support Sigma. They are an integral part of each accomplishment our chapter has had over the past year, and we truly appreciate their time and effort. 2011 has been an awesome year, and Sigma looks forward to a great 2012!
