Accomplishments Increased coverage from 12 to 28

schools and 3000 to 8500 kids in 2004

Motivated teachers to set and work towards clear targets e.g. “All kids in 3rd std should be able to fluently read non-text book kannada”, “Achieve 100% pass rate” etc…

Increased the passing rate for 7th std public exam at Arehalli school from 70% to 100% in a limited time frame of 4 months

Through improved image, Arehalli public school attracted 8 kids from a neighboring private school

Chikkalasandra school student strength grew from 190 to 270 kids

Introduced the idea of “Book Expeditions” - a step towards a strong library movement - to improve reading levels in students

Introduced the idea of “spot rewards” to encourage good performance from students

Trained students and teachers at Gubbalala school to use PC and multimedia content

Started quantitative assessment in 28 Sikshana schools to track learning level improvements

Raise funds (Rs. 578,000) to support Deployment of 14 teachers Learning level enhancement tasks for at

least 10 schools Adoption of 22 new schools

Strengthen volunteer base in India Replicate model to other places in India Increase coverage from 28 to 50 schools Help teachers to generate and implement own

ideas to improve learning level in school

Categories for Funding a school

Category 1: Motivational inputs for Learning Level Enhancement

Motivational input is the CORE of Sikshana. Availability of these funds is critical and is the highest priority for every school though the exact expenditure may vary depending on the specific requirements for a school

Category 2: Construction of class roomsThis is done only under critical conditions when children are forced to sit out in the open and when state support does not seem to be feasible in a reasonable time frame. Costs depend on specific schools and existing conditions.

Category 3: Deployment of TeachersThis is done when there is a delay in hiring of Government teachers. These resources are rotated into other schools as and when government teachers become available. These cost,

Rs 11,000 per annum for level I teacher (class 1-3) Rs 21,000 per annum for level II teacher (class 4 to 7)

Measuring Impact

Adopted a model in late 2004 that was developed by Azim Premji Foundation for assessment of learning levels in schools. The idea is to carry out the assessment twice a year.

Each school show different levels of improvement because of social conditions making it more reasonable and practical to track impact by averaging improvement on a cluster of schools
