Sitting too much is bad for you. As a matter of fact, it can make you sick!

Page 3Takoma Park Silver Foxes

Dr. James Levine, a re-

searcher at the Mayo

Clinic in Rochester,

Minn., wanted to answer

the question: Why do

some people who con-

sume the same amount

of food as others gain

more weight? In a 2005

study of two groups of

 people, wired up to

measure their bodies

calorie burning rate us-

ing motion – tracking,

while not exercising and

eating similar amounts

of food, Dr. Levine dis-

covered a simple an-

swer: the people who

didn’t gain weight were

unconsciously moving

around more. They made

more movements liketaking the stairs, trotting

down the hall to the wa-

ter cooler, bustling about

with chores at home, or

simply ―fidgeting.‖ On

average, the people who

gained weight sat two

more hours per day than

those who hadn’t. Over a

lifetime, the unhealthy

effects of sitting add up.

In a 2006 study by Alpa

Patel at the American

Cancer Society, men in

the study who spent six

hours or more per day of

their leisure time sitting

had an overall death rate

that was 20 percent

higher than men who sat

for three hours or less.

The death rate for

women who sat for more

than six hours a day was

about 40 percent higher.

And being sedentary for

nine hours a day at theoffice is bad for your

health no matter how

active you are in the eve-

ning.

Piney Branch Swimming Pool (7510 Maple Ave., inside Piney Branch School) is open:

Monday — Thursday 6:30 AM — 8:00 PMFriday 6:30 AM — 3 PM

 No weekend hours.

Hours and classes subject to change. Check the pool website: www.acsgw.org/pool.htm

Senior rates are $3.50 per swim (or a pass for $35.00 — 12 swims).

The pool offers reduced cost passes for low income seniors.

During pool hours, call (301) 891-8017. The lifeguards will answer this line, unless they

are out on the deck, or if the pool has an unscheduled closure. You can always call Joyce

Seamens, Director of Pool Operations, Adventist Community Services at (301) 565-0190.

The good news is that

you can turn it around

 just by moving more and

sitting less during the

day. Five minutes of a

more vigorous activity,

such as walking, for

every 40 or 50 minutes

you sit, improves circu-

lation, and gives the

heart, lungs and muscles

some exercise to coun-

terbalance the effects of

sitting for prolonged pe-

riods in a fixed position.

So, stay active, even in

small ways. Remember,

you can always join your

friends at the Takoma

Park Community Center

for a variety of healthy

activities. Keep Movin’
