ssisted living is an alter-native living arrange-

ment available for seniors who, because of health and/or safetyissues, choose assistance in asupervised setting. The residentlives independently while bene-fiting from support services. The services promote dignityand continued independence.Residents may have privateaccommodations, the luxury ofconsiderable communal spacefor socialization and recreationand the safety of a secure envi-ronment.

Amenities include 24 hourstaffing, assistance withbathing, dressing and groom-ing, management of medica-tions and provision of threemeals per day. Other servicesmay include snacks, house-keeping, laundry services, transportation and social, recre-ational and cultural activities. The number and scope of serv-ices may be dependent on thesize of the facility selected.Specialized assisted living maybe available for memoryimpaired residents in somefacilities.

Assisted living is a residentialproduct determined by choice, whereas a skilled nursing homeis need driven. The skillednursing facility is generally cov-

ered by Medicare and supple-mental insurance products, while assisted living is a privatepay product. If short-termmedical care is needed in anassisted living community, home health agencies can pro-vide that care with a physician’sorder and it will be covered byMedicare and/or insurance. Ifextensive medical care is needed,a hospital, rehabilitation centeror skilled nursing home will bedesirable.

Flexibility and continuity ofcare are essential to seniors andtheir adult children.Communities that offer a vari-ety of care options are ideal.Options may include adultdaycare, respite care forovernight or weekends, andshort/long-term accommoda-tions and memory care.Assisted living is a healthy andenriching option for seniorsneeding discreet supervisionand assistance. Veteran benefits, long term care insurance andpersonal funds are most com-monly used to pay for care andservice.
