WE ARE CLOSING ON THE 5TH FRIDAY

In order to allow our amazing cooks the opportunity

to have holidays off, we are se'ng a scheduled

quarterly closure to allow them to deep clean the

kitchen. This closure will also allow the staff the

opportunity to catch up on their paperwork and do

scheduled maintenance throughout the building.

We are calling these days Fabulous Fi%h Fridays!

Each month that has five Fridays will have a

scheduled closing on that last Friday.

We hope that this won’t inconvenience you.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

Have you ever

forgo$en to sign up

for tomorrow’s lunch

and wished there was

a way that you could

sign up from home?

Thanks to technology,

you can sign in on

your home computer,

tablet or phone and

register for future

lunches.

You must be registered with the Senior Center and

have a MySeniorCenter Key Tag to ac!vate your

account. Go to h$p://myac!vecenter.com to begin

the process. If you share an e-mail address with your

significant other, you can add them to your account

from the My Account page. If you have any problems,

please contact Bonnie for assistance. 435-226-1457

Are you shopping amazon.com or at

Smith’s?

A simple change to the way that you shop

amazon.com can result in great cash

dona!ons to the Senior Center through our

501C3 organiza!on Box Elder Golden Spike

Senior Services (BEGSSS). The next !me you

head over to amazon.com to shop, change

your address to smile.amazon.com. Your

shopping experience will be the same as your

usual shopping at amazon.com except the

products that you purchase will be marked

“Eligible for AmazonSmile dona!on” on the

product detail page. The first !me that you

go to smile.amazon.com, you will need to

select your charitable organiza!on. Where

you are asked to “select your charitable

organiza!on” select Box Elder Golden Spike

Senior Services. There is no extra charge to

you to generate this extra revenue. Amazon

will donate .5% of your eligible purchases to

BEGSSS. BEGSSS in turn uses these monies to

support the many programs and ac!vi!es

that happen at the Senior Center. Ques!ons?

See Nancy or Tammy

Earn money for us by shopping at Smith’s.

Before your next shopping trip to Smith’s, go

online and get yourself enrolled in Smith’s

Community Rewards. This will send a percentage

of your purchases into the account that we have

established for the Senior Center. So far, we have

deposited about $100. Create your account by

visi!ng the website at

www.smithsfoodanddrug.com. If you haven’t

created an account, click on “register”. If you

already have an account, sign in. Once your

account has been created, you will need to add

your Smith’s Rewards Card to your account. The

next step is to make sure that your personal

informa!on is correct under the “Accounts

Summary” page. Your next step is to click on the

“Community” tab on the top of the page and

then click on “Community Rewards”. Enter Box

Elder Golden Spike Senior Services under

organiza!on name and then click the bu$on next

to the name. Click Enroll to complete enrollment.

A step by step handout is available from Bonnie

at the Front Desk or one of the staff members can

assist you. When you receive your receipt a"er

shopping at Smith’s, check at the bo$om to see

your chosen organiza!on! It is that easy!

Healthier Ea"ng & Physical Ac"vi"es for Seniors ~March~

Disaster Preparedness

Disasters can happen at any moment. By planning ahead

you can avoid wai!ng in long lines for cri!cal supplies,

such as food, water and medicine and you will have the

essen!al items that you need in case of evacua!on.

- Have a disaster supplies kit packed and ready

before a disaster hits.

- Assemble enough supplies to last for at least

three days.

- Store your supplies in one or more easy-to-carry

containers such as a backpack or duffel bag.

- You may want to consider storing your supplies

in a container that has wheels.

- BE sure that your bag has an ID tag.

- Label any equipment, such as wheelchairs, canes

or walkers with your name, address and phone

number.

- Keep your kit up-to-date. Review the contents

every six months or as your needs change. Check

expira!on dates and shi" your stored supplies

into everyday use before they expire.

Pick up a check-list at the front desk for supplies that

might be useful to place in your kit.

Forget cleaning out closets and scrubbing floors to welcome

spring. Instead, start by cleaning up your ea!ng habits.

Here is a seven-step plan to get you started.

Say goodbye to bad winter habits: With winter overstaying

its welcome this year, its likely rich soups, stews, pastas and

feel-good desserts have become home menu staples. “We

tend to hibernate and some!mes stock up on processed

foods to comfort ourselves from the cold.

Revisit your por!ons: Get control of your calories to help

manage the extra winter weight you might have put on.

Doing so helps counteract that mindless munching habit you

may have slipped into over the chilly months.

Clean out your cupboards and fridge: Go through and toss

any expired and processed foods to organize your fridge and

cupboards for healthier ea!ng. Think about the rule of five;

check the labels on items in your pantry-cookies, crackers

and chips and if there are more than five grams of fat on the

label, it is a good package to toss. A"er tossing heavy sauces,

dips and snacks, replace them with bowls of fruit, pre-cut

veggies, plain yogurt and dips and lighter salad dressings.

Slash your salt and sugar: White sugar is an instant hit to

your body and linked to diabetes, inflamma!on, decreased

immune response, liver fa!gue and some cancers. Cu'ng

back on your salt lowers the risk of heart disease, since salt

s!ffens the arteries and makes them rigid.

Add probio!cs: Probio!cs help with diges!ve health so add

in yogurt or a yogurt drink daily. It can also help if you have

been figh!ng colds & flus throughout the winter. Many of us

have had some an!bio!cs because we have been sick, so

adding a probio!c helps rebalance the gut-friendly bacteria.

Switch up your produce: Tired of apples, bananas & root

vegetables? There are some nice spring produce choices

coming out –berries, asparagus, broccoli & melons are mak-

ing an appearance at our grocery stores. The more colorful

the fruit or vegetable, the more vitamins and minerals it has.

Ditch the dehydra!ng drinks: Time to rethink your drinks!.

Replace any sugar-sweetened pop with a big pitcher of wa-

ter. (Tip: Add orange, lemon, lime or cucumber slices for a

refreshing twist.) Water helps you get hydrated and flushes

out the toxins, lets you be more alert, have more energy,

control your appe!te and increase your metabolism.

Plant a garden: Take inspira!on from the produce you are

seeing in the store and plan a spring and summer’s worth of

healthy ea!ng from your very own back deck or yard. “You

can already start your seedlings indoors to replant later,”

says Sunderland. BY ASTRID VAN DEN BROEK

READERS DIGEST BEST HEALTH ONLINE

Nutri!on Class In a class !tled “Serving Nutri!ous & A$rac!ve Meals”,

there was a wide range of ladies present, from newly-

weds clear up to Mrs. Smith, who was 84.

Great informa!on and ideas were given and everyone

was taking notes as fast as they could write. At the end

of the class the instructor said, “We have 15 minutes

le". We all know that we don’t always have !me to

serve the kind of meal we‘d love to serve. So let’s go

around the room and each of you tell us what you do

when you only have 15 minutes to prepare a meal.”

Again there were great ideas and everyone was wri!ng

as fast as they could. When they got to Mrs. Smith and

asked “What do you do when you have just 15

minutes?” Without hesita!on she replied, “I just tell

Harvey he’s already had dinner!”

I WISH I WERE IRISH!

You have all heard this lament from me about every year in March since I started wri!ng this column almost seven years

ago. You have also heard me say that to be Irish I had a marry a man whose second great grandfather, Cornelius Doyle, came to

Canada from Ireland My husband didn't know he was Irish un!l I started wandering through his family lines. I love Family History

and Jack would rather stay home and clean our house while I search his lines. That way we are BOTH happy! Anyway, lets Mean-

der back to the Irish.

My favorite hot chocolate mug is Irish (you didn't know that mugs have na!onali!es did you?). The outside of the mug show a

Li$le leprechaun lounging on the grass and saying, "May the Good Lord take a liking to you...." inside the top of the mug is a four

leaf clover by a line that says..."but not too soon!" Jack and I have been sipping a lot of hot chocolate in all the frigid weather we

have been having, so I have been looking at the leprechaun and the saying on that mug a lot. I have been wondering where I

bought that mug, when we were in Ireland.

First of all I don't buy mugs for myself. I leave that to my children. Second of all, I don't buy po$ery in a foreign country ever

since I was almost accused and put away for trying to sneak treasures from newly discovered burial mounds in Korea! I had

bought some souvenir po$ery bowls I loved, when we went to visit our son and his family who were living in Korea at that !me. I

wrapped the bowls in heavy paper and put them in my carry on so I could protect them all the way back to the States. I was fine

un!l I went through Customs to fly out of Korea. Usually Customs is easy for us because we have done the drill in a lot of Foreign

Countries and know how to move it along. Not this !me. I was taken over to the side of customs, when the Custom officer un-

wrapped one of my bowls then frowned and unwrapped another one and another and another. The frowns became deeper and

my story of "buying them for souvenirs " became more in ques!on. Another Customs "expert" was called into ac!on and he care-

fully examined my "souvenir bowls" . I told them my story again as I was asked again, "Where did I buy them? ( A po$ery store.)

"Why did I buy them?" ( I wanted them as souvenirs.) "What was I going to do with them. (Use

them to eat cereal and soup out of!) A"er the Custom's expert looked carefully over the bowls (and

I think ME), he apologized and said they were sorry to detain me but people had been smuggling

the country's po$ery treasures that had been stolen out of the newly discovered Royalty burial

mounds. I HAD seen the mounds but I had no inclina!on to steal ANYTHING, especially in a foreign

country. The Customs people le" me to fran!cally rewrap the bowls, grab our other luggage at the

baggage claim and race for our airplane that was probably ready to leave. The end of the story was

that when I reached home, the bowls were not rewrapped good enough and they were all bro-

ken. That is when I started to collect neck scarves for souvenirs. They don't break. They do not

take up any room in the carry on and they do not alert anyone when you go through Customs. I think this was also the trip when

we decided you do not need a lot of luggage to travel. We put all we need in a Carry on, grab a purse and brief case and head for

the airport. We do the same if we go overnight or for a month! It saves a lot of !me, space and ques!ons at Customs!

Let's see.....Where was I before I Meandered to thinking about where I got my Irish mug. I didn't buy it in Ireland and so one of

our children must have given it to me as a gi". The best way to guess is to see where it was made. I turned the mug over and saw

where it was made! KOREA!!! Another mystery solved. Our kids that lived in Korea for four years and knew how much I loved Ire-

land, probably brought it home as a gi". Now that same son and his family have lived in Japan for almost eleven years. When I go

to visit them and I want to bring back gi"s made in Japan, I have to be careful. I may be buying things made in China or any other

place in the world. If you can buy an Irish mug in Korea, think what other places your souvenirs may have been made. The other

problem is, I don't read or speak Japanese. When I look at the Japanese labels in the stores, it is "all Greek" to me! My daughter in

law or one of the children have to decipher where it is made or what kind of food is in the package. They have been in Japan long

enough to help me with those things. English is s!ll their main language. Our son, however, is fluent in Japanese, thanks to his

Church Mission as a young man and the fact he has lived in Japan for so long. He teaches in a school on a Navy Base in Sasebo,

Japan and all his children have a$ended there. The school, however, is a strictly English speaking school. Our son teaches every-

thing in English He uses his Japanese, in the Chow (neighborhood) outside the base and with Japanese personnel on the base.. His

school is a school for Military dependent children and anyone else that wants to send their children to an English speaking school

and has money to back up that desire. Now Meander back to Ireland.

OK, another thought on Ireland and St. Patrick's Day. We associate this month with, "Finding gold at the end of the rainbow,"

or" Being Lucky". I was si'ng in a gathering the other day with friends and I no!ced the hands of the women on either side of

me. I knew the one woman used her hands to garden, work hard in her home, and write agendas and lead many women's club in

our city and state. I looked at the hands of my friend on the other side of me and I knew how beau!fully she played the piano and

flute. It caused me to think of many of the people in my life and how "lucky" I am to have them use their hands in blessing my

life. Look around at people this month and think of the ways they bring "good luck" to people with their hands. We will have more

on that next month. Un!l then, "May the good Lord take a liking to you.....but not too soon."
