Installation of Officers by Gay L. Austin
It is my privilege today to install the officers for the Nevada Garden Clubs, Inc. for the upcoming 2019-2021 administration. To those who are the current officers, thank you for the leadership that you have provided to your club. The members who have accepted the board positions have a tremendous responsibility of continuing the efforts of their predecessors in promoting fellowship, friendship and support in the many areas of this club. Each position is so unique and special in the leadership and future of your club, so today I’m including a collection of Audubon birds to highlight the differences. Immediate Past-President - Nancy Lee Loesch - Bald Eagle, a regal bird that is the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. Just as the Bald Eagle perches high for all to see and swoops down in awesome display, the Immediate Past-President will swoop in to aid the club as an advisor. Treasurer – Dorlene Waite - Black-Capped Chickadee, known for its curiosity for just about everything, has a habit of investigating people and everything else in its home territory. This bird is known for hiding seeds and other food items to eat later, with each item being placed in a different spot. Just as the chickadee can remember thousands of its hiding spots, so too can our Treasurer as she watches over the accounts and books of our club with a close eye always helping the membership spend our money wisely. Corresponding Secretary – Jean Engelmann - Northern Cardinal - is a mid-size songbird and with its perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style, the cardinal is breathtakingly beautiful. As it is often said that if a cardinal is spotted in your yard, it’s a visitor from heaven, our Corresponding Secretary makes sure our members know we are thinking of them during tragedy and also during happy times. She will also be tasked with all correspondence with other clubs and organizations making sure our club stays gracious and thoughtful. Recording Secretary – Nancy Bovill - Mockingbird is known to sing almost endlessly, even sometimes at night, and is most well-known for mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians, often loudly and in rapid succession. Our club has its own version of the mockingbird in our Recording Secretary who will work diligently in recording our meetings and keeping the records and minutes of our club in perfect order. Second Vice-President – Beverly Noyer - Blue Jay is a common, large songbird familiar to most people. They are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds. Like the Blue Jay, your Second Vice-President has a strong connection with our family of garden club members and will work tirelessly to learn the many task associated with this important position. First Vice-President – Larri Tarver - Wild Turkey is a beautiful, magnificent large bird well-known for its male using their huge tail feathers for display… and what a display it is. Just as the wild turkey’s display of its fan is unmistakable, so is the display of our First Vice-President. With the task of always being prepared to step into the role as president, this officer will display excellent leadership skills if needed.

SILVER STATE GARDENER
President's Message
T hank you for this great honor to serve as your President of Nevada Garden Clubs. I so appreciate all the
well wishes and encouragement you have given me already and I look forward to working with you all
to make a better, more active and visible Nevada Garden Club.
My theme is: “Make a Difference Whenever, Wherever and However You Can – in your Garden Club,
in your Community and in Yourself”.
I‟m going to work towards this goal by encouraging all Garden Club members to
become more active in our clubs and the community. As gardeners we have a unique
talent we need to share with our Las Vegas Valley community: gardening successfully
in this challenging desert environment. We need to share our knowledge to educate the
public whenever, wherever and however we can.
We especially want to educate the youth to become Gardeners; they are the future caretakers of our
gardens, as well as our environment, the two areas go together. We are already in a couple of schools and are
trying to grow the school programs.
I want to cultivate connections with other community organizations, schools and government entities.
These interactions will increase our visibility in the community. We are also increasing our visibility by
getting more into social media. We are on Facebook, we have a website, we have an email address. We are
trying to become more visible to the public as well as to our own members.
I‟m asking all our members to be more active in our clubs, your smallest act can make an unforeseen
difference. If we are to be successful in all these areas, it will take a joint effort on all our parts. Watch the
website for upcoming events. If you have an event, please contact publicity.
Be sure to take advantage of all our different clubs have to offer especially interesting meetings and
speakers, Flower Shows, Flower Show Schools, work projects and of course our twice yearly State Meetings.
Please join our National Garden Club mission to "Plant America" and help us to "Grow Nevada".
Thank you again for electing me president; with your help we can reach all my goals for Nevada
Garden Clubs.
Judy Stebbins, President Nevada Garden Clubs, Inc., 2019 - 2021
...continued from page 4 President – Judy Stebbins - Ruby-throated hummingbird – is a brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creature that glitters like jewels in the full sun, then vanishes with a zip toward the next nectar source. Just as this bird beats its wings about 53 times a second, our President’s job is also never done. From the beginning she announces our new Board and new members, with activities all year long, her job is never complete as she highlights activities across the state, region and national meetings. The President becomes the “go to” person for all matters that come before the membership and she works with the Board members to make the best decisions for the club as a whole. Each of these birds has one thing in common in the fact that they all go home to their “nest”, at some point in time. If you will place the nest on the table and each of the officers will place their bird in the nest. The Nevada Garden Club has members, clubs, districts and state volunteers scattered throughout unique geographical areas with dedicated members throughout. These people give their time and talent by serving as leaders in both this organization and their communities. Thank you to each of these members for volunteering to fill these roles to make the Nevada Garden Clubs a successful, thriving group. As E.E. Cummings once said, “I would rather learn from one bird how to sing than to teach 10,000 stars how not to dance.” Under these ladies’ leadership and Judy’s role as president, I know the year ahead will be filled with songs of praise as we beautify and protect the state of Nevada.
As gardeners we have a unique talent we need
to share with our Las
Vegas Valley...
D e s e r t Gardeners Desert Gardeners are a diverse group of gardeners in the Las Vegas Valley; we have had a busy year.
We completed the Serenity Garden project for
Westcare, a local nonprofit which helps women recovering from drug or alcohol addiction by
providing housing and counseling. The project was
completed in November, 2018. We‟ve gone back twice to weed and replace any plants that died. The
drought tolerant plants we planted are growing
great guns. The hummingbird plants are colorful and are attracting hummingbirds.
Our reading and gardening program
for about 70 four-year-olds at
Acelero Head Start School has
worked out really well. We teach a
30 minute class once a month. We
read a book and have a short project
after. We read about worms, soil,
planting bean seeds, read that
ladybugs and butterflies are good
for plants but caterpillar and larva
are not. We brought samples of
plants that have been food for
caterpillars for the children to see.
We told them that the caterpillars
ate their bean plants! These little 4-
year-olds remember what we do
from month to month!
Derfelt Senior Center only has one
senior gardener this year so we
have not been active with them.
The Youth Program is going to join
with Derfelt seniors and Las Vegas
Department of Parks & Recreation
this summer to develop a reading
program for those kids who are
be ing cared fo r by the ir
grandparents.
Our member Beverly
Noyer chaired the
M e m o r i a l D a y
program and donated
the 103 flags the
Nevada Garden Clubs
members planted at
Lorenzi Park on May 27, 2019. The
event was successful; pictures of
the Southern Nevada Girl Scout
Color Guard opening ceremony are
available on our Facebook page.
We had TV coverage of the program
by local ABC Action News (Cox 13)
as well as a live interview.
We continue with our monthly
speakers and road trips. Our first
speaker for 2018–19 was our
member Karen Elliott speaking on
antique perfume bottles and how
they tied in with gardeners. Our
final speaker was an NGCI member
of the Glitter Gulch African Violet
Growers Joyce Stork who taught us
how to propagate an African Violet
from a violet plant leaf. Our
member Carol Wright brought her
plant for us to use.
We have added 3, maybe 4, new
members this year. We remain an
active club, involved with our
community and gardens.

The Julia A. Menasco Rose Garden and Blue Star Memorial on Silver Springs Pkwy
in Henderson was decorated with one hundred 8”x12” American flags on Memorial
Day, May 27th. This display honored service members who died defending our na-
tion. This is a tradition begun in Boston over a decade ago.

Sunset Garden Club members installed the flags
at 6 a.m.; removed them at 7 p.m. (Dawn to
Dusk). There was a ceremony at 9 a.m. led by a
Girl Scout Honor Guard trooping the colors,
reading of a proclamation and singing of
patriotic hymns by Sunset Garden Club
members.
Representatives from the Blue Star Mothers of
America, Inc. also participated.

A Master database has been created which includes
the names, addresses and email addresses of visitors to past NGCI events. The information has been mined
from guest books, sign-in sheets, etc, which usually are present at events where the public is expected to
attend. It is an ongoing project and one, we hope, will build an impressive catalog of contacts. The idea behind
this project is to
send notices of upcoming events
build attendance at NGCI Flower Shows and Educational Events
acknowledge appreciation with thank you messages
send to those interested the NGCI trifold.
create good will with the community
If your club would like to add to the list (we hope you do!) please send your information to
[email protected]. Thank you!

The publicity committee„s job is to promote and
advertise the Nevada Garden Clubs and its events to the
public. We use social media, our
website, radio, television, and
newspapers. We attend other
organizations‟ meetings, getting
new ideas, seeing what they do to
get publicity and sponsors, we visit
schools and volunteer when
possible. We hand out our club
cards wherever we go.
We host a table at each of the Springs Preserve plant
sales. We take our brochures and any flyers of our
events.
We completed our new color trifold brochure. Our goal
was to make it eye catching. The update included
making the trifold a "mailer ready" publication. “Thank
you for visiting our event and your interest in our
clubs.” is in the upper left hand corner of the mailing
side. If you need any brochures to take to an event, just
let us know.
Computers, smartphones, Wi-Fi and high
speed internet have made information
available at the touch of a finger. We
have seven seconds to get someone‟s
attention. Social media and a website are
hyper important for “advertising”. We now have a
Facebook account for Nevada Garden Clubs. We try to
post regularly to keep people returning to our page.

We are also updating our website. You may have
noticed our home page has changed. If you have an
event or a picture of a flower or
garden related news, please send
i t t o Ka r e n E l l io t t a t
[email protected]. A PDF file for
pictures is good; a month‟s notice
to put your event on the calendar
is best. We‟re trying to keep the
information we provide current.
We are getting our event information on KNPR
(88.9 FM) and the PBS community calendar
(www.VegasPBS.org/calendar/). We aren‟t having
much luck with the Review Journal. Local ABC
Action News (channel 13) interviewed us previous
to the Memorial Day flag planting and was on hand
at 6 a.m. on May 27, Memorial Day, to televise our
Lorenzi Park Memorial Day program live. We had
members of the Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada‟s
Color Guard present the flags and lead us in the
Pledge of Allegiance. Channel 13 also interviewed
a couple of our members, who were veterans, after
the ceremony was completed.
If you have an event you want publicized, we now
have several venues. Send your information to
[email protected]. We need 2 to 4 weeks lead time.
We are always looking for new ways to publicize
our Garden Clubs; if you have any suggestions,
please let us know.
