SIMO LAHTINEN I’m an industrial designer from Helsinki, Finland. Currently living in the Netherlands. My passion towards design has drove me study from mechanical engineering to archi-tectural drawing and finally industrial design. Studying architectural drawing opened doors for me and I have gained over two years expertise at working in architect offices. At the moment I am just finishing a minor; Co-Design Studio in Hogeschool Utrecht. Co-Design Studio is a program aiming to support senior design students in their development towards user-centered lifestyle.

With my experience in architecture, user centered design, meaningful products and my passion to pure aesthetics of Scandinavia, I maintain a balance between functionality and visual look in all of my work. I believe that good design is timeless, kind for environment and well produced. That includes the understanding of the material use and production techniques.

SIVUDesigned and built in only four days. SIVU is a foldable table lamp with multiple func-tions owing to it’s foldable construction.

The simple and layered structure makes SIVU ecological to produce. The construc-tion consists of two parts, connected with a leather strip. This makes the construc-tion flexible and adjustable. A led strip is implemented inside the core, which pass-es through the construction. Plexiglass softens the light and the illuminated area can be easily adjusted by just opening and closing the light.

FINALCONCEPT

“Right now, it happens pretty often that you don’t know what to do. This is a fun way to find out .“ -17 years old

Field research was made at different locations in the Netherlands. Re-sults were combined in to different themes and quotes were made. The main insight was that young people are really advanced with the use of internet and exited to travel, but they are still hesitant about traveling. The aim was to create a concept which would connect the journey with the destination.

FINAL CONCEPT

The final concept is a platform which offers the users locations based on their interests and age. The user can define a suitable price range and distance. The platform guides with the bus route, information about the location and the total costs of the trip.

MAIN QUESTION

In what way do we get youngsters (12-18 year) to increase the extent in which they use Arriva busses?

The worktop includes storage space with liftable covers which also works as an additional workspace.

The competition’s task was to design a kitchen of the future. The only limiting aspects was the space and a couple specified household appliances. However the design had to be able to produce, considering a variety of functional elements.

The primary goal of the design is to serve the needs of the user. The kitchen is compact and modular, with organic shapes. The worktop and shelve are made of Corian and the core is veneer as thin layer of wood.

The jury praised that the kitchen is a lively, light and furniture-like, but it also has a new approach on manu-facturing technique. L-shaped worktop offers a practi-cal working space and interesting shape.
